Chapter 21
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshekּa֤b yehֽoshshapat֙ 'im-'abota֔yv vayּiqּabe֥r 'im-'abota֖yv bּe'i֣yr dּavi֑yd vayּimelo֛ke yehora֥m bּen֖o tּachetּaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Jehoshaphat rested with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the City of David. Then Jehoram his son reigned in his place.

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֤ב יְהֽוֹשָׁפָט֙ עִם־אֲבֹתָ֔יו וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר עִם־אֲבֹתָ֖יו בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֑יד וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יְהוֹרָ֥ם בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): velֽo-'achi֞ym bּene֣y yehoshshapa֗t 'azareya֤h viֽychiy'el֙ uzekareya֣hu va'azareya֔hu umiyka'e֖l ushshepateya֑hu kּal-'e֕lּeh bּene֥y yehoshshapa֖t me֥leke-yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had brothers, the sons of Jehoshaphat: Azariah, Jehiel, Zechariah, Azariah, Michael, and Shephatiah; all these were the sons of Jehoshaphat king of Judah.

וְלֽוֹ־אַחִ֞ים בְּנֵ֣י יְהוֹשָׁפָ֗ט עֲזַרְיָ֤ה וִֽיחִיאֵל֙ וּזְכַרְיָ֣הוּ וַעֲזַרְיָ֔הוּ וּמִיכָאֵ֖ל וּשְׁפַטְיָ֑הוּ כָּל־אֵ֕לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט מֶ֥לֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֣n lahe֣m ׀ 'a֠biyhem matּan֨ot rabּ֜ot leke֤sep ulezahab֙ ulemigedּan֔ot 'im-'are֥y metzur֖ot bּiֽyhuda֑h ve'et-hamּamelaka֛h nata֥n liֽyhora֖m kּiy-h֥u habּekֽor׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Their father gave them great gifts of silver and gold and precious things, with fortified cities in Judah; but he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn.

וַיִּתֵּ֣ן לָהֶ֣ם ׀ אֲ֠בִיהֶם מַתָּנ֨וֹת רַבּ֜וֹת לְכֶ֤סֶף וּלְזָהָב֙ וּלְמִגְדָּנ֔וֹת עִם־עָרֵ֥י מְצֻר֖וֹת בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה וְאֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָ֛ה נָתַ֥ן לִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם כִּי־ה֥וּא הַבְּכֽוֹר׃פ

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam yehora֜m 'al-mamele֤kat 'abiyv֙ vayּitechazּa֔q vayּaharo֥g 'et-kּal-'echa֖yv bּecha֑reb vega֖m mishsּare֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when Jehoram had risen up over the kingdom of his father, he strengthened himself and killed all his brothers with the sword, and also several of the leaders of Israel.

וַיָּ֨קָם יְהוֹרָ֜ם עַל־מַמְלֶ֤כַת אָבִיו֙ וַיִּתְחַזַּ֔ק וַיַּהֲרֹ֥ג אֶת־כָּל־אֶחָ֖יו בֶּחָ֑רֶב וְגַ֖ם מִשָּׂרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shsheloshshi֥ym ushshetּa֛yim shshana֖h yehora֣m bּemalek֑o ushshemone֣h shshani֔ym mala֖ke bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem.

בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וּשְׁתַּ֛יִם שָׁנָ֖ה יְהוֹרָ֣ם בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֣ה שָׁנִ֔ים מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֜leke bּede֣reke ׀ maleke֣y yishsera'e֗l kּa'ashshe֤r 'ashsu֙ bּe֣yt 'ache'a֔b kּi֚y bּat-'ache'a֔b ha֥yetah lּ֖o 'ishshּa֑h vayּa֥'ashs hara֖ bּe'eyne֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for he had the daughter of Ahab as a wife; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.

וַיֵּ֜לֶךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ ׀ מַלְכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשׂוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אַחְאָ֔ב כִּ֚י בַּת־אַחְאָ֔ב הָ֥יְתָה לּ֖וֹ אִשָּׁ֑ה וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-'aba֣h yehva֗h lehashshechiyt֙ 'et-bּe֣yt dּavi֔yd lema֣'an habּeri֔yt 'ashshe֥r kּara֖t ledavi֑yd veka'ashshe֣r 'ama֗r late֨t l֥o ni֛yr ulebana֖yv kּal-hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Yet the LORD would not destroy the house of David, because of the covenant He had made with David, and since He had promised to give a lamp to him and to his sons forever.

וְלֹא־אָבָ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה לְהַשְׁחִית֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית דָּוִ֔יד לְמַ֣עַן הַבְּרִ֔ית אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּרַ֖ת לְדָוִ֑יד וְכַאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמַ֗ר לָתֵ֨ת ל֥וֹ נִ֛יר וּלְבָנָ֖יו כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּeyamayv֙ pּashsha֣ 'ed֔om mitּa֖chat yad-yehuda֑h vayּameli֥yku 'aleyhe֖m meֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In his days the Edomites revolted from under the dominion of Judah, and made a king for themselves.

בְּיָמָיו֙ פָּשַׁ֣ע אֱד֔וֹם מִתַּ֖חַת יַד־יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֶֽלֶךְ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaֽ'abo֤r yehoram֙ 'im-shsara֔yv vekal-hare֖keb 'imּ֑o vayehiy֙ qa֣m la֔yelah vayּa֗ke 'et-'edom֙ hasּobe֣b 'ela֔yv ve'e֖t shsare֥y haraֽkeb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jehoram went out with his officers, and all his chariots with him. And he rose by night and struck the Edomites who had surrounded him and the captains of the chariots.

וַיַּֽעֲבֹ֤ר יְהוֹרָם֙ עִם־שָׂרָ֔יו וְכָל־הָרֶ֖כֶב עִמּ֑וֹ וַיְהִי֙ קָ֣ם לַ֔יְלָה וַיַּ֗ךְ אֶת־אֱדוֹם֙ הַסּוֹבֵ֣ב אֵלָ֔יו וְאֵ֖ת שָׂרֵ֥י הָרָֽכֶב׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipeshsha֨ 'ed֜om mitּa֣chat yad-yehuda֗h 'a֚d hayּ֣om hazּe֔h 'a֣z tּipeshsha֥ libena֛h bּa'e֥t hahi֖y mitּa֣chat yad֑o kּi֣y 'aza֔b 'et-yehva֖h 'elohe֥y 'abotaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Thus the Edomites have been in revolt from under the hand of Judah to this day. At the same time Libnah revolted from under his hand, because he had forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.

וַיִּפְשַׁ֨ע אֱד֜וֹם מִתַּ֣חַת יַד־יְהוּדָ֗ה עַ֚ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה אָ֣ז תִּפְשַׁ֥ע לִבְנָ֛ה בָּעֵ֥ת הַהִ֖יא מִתַּ֣חַת יָד֑וֹ כִּ֣י עָזַ֔ב אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבֹתָֽיו׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-h֥u 'ashsaֽh-bam֖ot bּehare֣y yehuda֑h vayּe֨zen֙ 'et-yoshshebe֣y yerushshalai֔m vayּadּa֖ch 'et-yehudaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover he made high places in the mountains of Judah, and caused the inhabitants of Jerusalem to commit harlotry, and led Judah astray.

גַּם־ה֥וּא עָשָֽׂה־בָמ֖וֹת בְּהָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיֶּ֨זֶן֙ אֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיַּדַּ֖ח אֶת־יְהוּדָֽה׃פ

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ 'elayv֙ miketּa֔b meֽ'eliyּa֥hu hanּabi֖y le'mo֑r kּo֣h ׀ 'ama֣r yehva֗h 'elohey֙ dּavi֣yd 'abi֔yka tּa֗chat 'ashshe֤r loֽ'-hala֨ketּa֙ bּedarekey֙ yehoshshapa֣t 'abi֔yka ubedareke֖y 'asa֥ meֽleke-yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And a letter came to him from Elijah the prophet, saying: "Thus says the LORD God of David your father: 'Because you have not walked in the ways of Jehoshaphat your father, nor in the ways of Asa king of Judah,

וַיָּבֹ֤א אֵלָיו֙ מִכְתָּ֔ב מֵֽאֵלִיָּ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֣ה ׀ אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אֱלֹהֵי֙ דָּוִ֣יד אָבִ֔יךָ תַּ֗חַת אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־הָלַ֨כְתָּ֙ בְּדַרְכֵי֙ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט אָבִ֔יךָ וּבְדַרְכֵ֖י אָסָ֥א מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֗leke bּede֨reke֙ maleke֣y yishsera'e֔l vatּazene֤h 'et-yehudah֙ ve'et-yoshshebe֣y yerushshalai֔m kּehazen֖ot bּe֣yt 'ache'a֑b vega֨m 'et-'ache֧yka beyt-'abi֛yka hatּobi֥ym mimּeka֖ haraֽgetּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but have walked in the way of the kings of Israel, and have made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to play the harlot like the harlotry of the house of Ahab, and also have killed your brothers, those of your father’s house, who were better than yourself,

וַתֵּ֗לֶךְ בְּדֶ֨רֶךְ֙ מַלְכֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַתַּזְנֶ֤ה אֶת־יְהוּדָה֙ וְאֶת־יֹשְׁבֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם כְּהַזְנ֖וֹת בֵּ֣ית אַחְאָ֑ב וְגַ֨ם אֶת־אַחֶ֧יךָ בֵית־אָבִ֛יךָ הַטּוֹבִ֥ים מִמְּךָ֖ הָרָֽגְתָּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֣h yehva֗h noge֛p magּepa֥h gedola֖h bּe'amּe֑ka ubebane֥yka ubenashshe֖yka ubekal-rekushsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)behold, the LORD will strike your people with a serious blow, your children, your wives, and all your possessions;

הִנֵּ֣ה יְהוָ֗ה נֹגֵ֛ף מַגֵּפָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה בְּעַמֶּ֑ךָ וּבְבָנֶ֥יךָ וּבְנָשֶׁ֖יךָ וּבְכָל־רְכוּשֶֽׁךָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֛h bּacholayi֥ym rabּi֖ym bּemachale֣h me'e֑yka 'ad-yetze'֤u me'e֨yka֙ min-hacho֔liy yami֖ym 'al-yamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and you will have great sickness with a disease of your intestines, until your intestines come out by reason of the sickness, day after day.' "

וְאַתָּ֛ה בָּחֳלָיִ֥ים רַבִּ֖ים בְּמַחֲלֵ֣ה מֵעֶ֑יךָ עַד־יֵצְא֤וּ מֵעֶ֨יךָ֙ מִן־הַחֹ֔לִי יָמִ֖ים עַל־יָמִֽים׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'ar yehva֜h 'al-yehora֗m 'e֣t r֤ucha hapּelishshetּiym֙ veha֣'arebi֔ym 'ashshe֖r 'al-ya֥d kּushshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover the LORD stirred up against Jehoram the spirit of the Philistines and the Arabians who were near the Ethiopians.

וַיָּ֨עַר יְהוָ֜ה עַל־יְהוֹרָ֗ם אֵ֣ת ר֤וּחַ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ וְהָ֣עַרְבִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־יַ֥ד כּוּשִֽׁים׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֤u biֽyhudah֙ vayּibeqa'֔uha vayּishshebּ֗u 'e֤t kּal-harekushsh֙ hanּimetza֣ lebeyt-hamּe֔leke vegam-bּana֖yv venashsha֑yv velo֤ nishshe'ar-lo֙ bּe֔n kּi֥y 'im-yeho'acha֖z qeto֥n bּanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And they came up into Judah and invaded it, and carried away all the property that was found in the king’s house, and also his sons and his wives, so that there was no son left to him except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

וַיַּעֲל֤וּ בִֽיהוּדָה֙ וַיִּבְקָע֔וּהָ וַיִּשְׁבּ֗וּ אֵ֤ת כָּל־הָרְכוּשׁ֙ הַנִּמְצָ֣א לְבֵית־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְגַם־בָּנָ֖יו וְנָשָׁ֑יו וְלֹ֤א נִשְׁאַר־לוֹ֙ בֵּ֔ן כִּ֥י אִם־יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז קְטֹ֥ן בָּנָֽיו׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'achare֖y kּal-zo֑'t negap֨o yehva֧h ׀ bּeme'a֛yv lacholi֖y le'e֥yn marepּeֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After all this the LORD struck him in his intestines with an incurable disease.

וְאַחֲרֵ֖י כָּל־זֹ֑את נְגָפ֨וֹ יְהוָ֧ה ׀ בְּמֵעָ֛יו לָחֳלִ֖י לְאֵ֥ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y leyami֣ym ׀ miyּami֡ym uke'et֩ tze֨'t haqּe֜tz leyami֣ym shshena֗yim yatze'֤u me'ayv֙ 'im-chaley֔o vayּa֖mat bּetachalu'i֣ym ra'i֑ym velo'-'a֨shsu l֥o 'amּ֛o shserepa֖h kּishserepa֥t 'abotaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then it happened in the course of time, after the end of two years, that his intestines came out because of his sickness; so he died in great pain. And his people made no funeral fire for him, like the fire of his fathers.

וַיְהִ֣י לְיָמִ֣ים ׀ מִיָּמִ֡ים וּכְעֵת֩ צֵ֨את הַקֵּ֜ץ לְיָמִ֣ים שְׁנַ֗יִם יָצְא֤וּ מֵעָיו֙ עִם־חָלְי֔וֹ וַיָּ֖מָת בְּתַחֲלֻאִ֣ים רָעִ֑ים וְלֹא־עָ֨שׂוּ ל֥וֹ עַמּ֛וֹ שְׂרֵפָ֖ה כִּשְׂרֵפַ֥ת אֲבֹתָֽיו׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shsheloshshi֤ym ushshetּa֨yim֙ haya֣h bemalek֔o ushshemone֣h shshani֔ym mala֖ke bּiyrushshala֑im vayּe֨leke֙ bּelo֣ chemedּa֔h vaֽyּiqebּeru֨hu֙ bּe'i֣yr dּavi֔yd velo֖ bּeqiber֥ot hamּelakiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He was thirty-two years old when he became king. He reigned in Jerusalem eight years and, to no one’s regret, passed away. However they buried him in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.

בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וּשְׁתַּ֨יִם֙ הָיָ֣ה בְמָלְכ֔וֹ וּשְׁמוֹנֶ֣ה שָׁנִ֔ים מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ בְּלֹ֣א חֶמְדָּ֔ה וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֨הוּ֙ בְּעִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד וְלֹ֖א בְּקִבְר֥וֹת הַמְּלָכִֽים׃
