Chapter 23

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubashshּana֨h hashshּebi'i֜yt hitechazּa֣q yehoyada֗ vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-shsare֣y hamּe'֡ot la'azareya֣hu ben-yerocha֡m uleyishshema'e֣'l bּen-ye֠hochanan velaֽ'azareya֨hu ben-'obe֜d ve'et-ma'ashseya֧hu ben-'adaya֛hu ve'et-'eliyshshapa֥t bּen-zikeri֖y 'imּ֥o babּeriֽyt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the seventh year Jehoiada strengthened himself, and made a covenant with the captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Jehohanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri.

וּבַשָּׁנָ֨ה הַשְּׁבִעִ֜ית הִתְחַזַּ֣ק יְהוֹיָדָ֗ע וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֡וֹת לַעֲזַרְיָ֣הוּ בֶן־יְרֹחָ֡ם וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בֶּן־יְ֠הוֹחָנָן וְלַֽעֲזַרְיָ֨הוּ בֶן־עוֹבֵ֜ד וְאֶת־מַעֲשֵׂיָ֧הוּ בֶן־עֲדָיָ֛הוּ וְאֶת־אֱלִישָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־זִכְרִ֖י עִמּ֥וֹ בַבְּרִֽית׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaso֨bּu֙ bּiֽyhuda֔h vayּiqebּetz֤u 'et-haleviyּim֙ mikּal-'are֣y yehuda֔h vera'shshe֥y ha'ab֖ot leyishsera'e֑l vayּabo֖'u 'el-yerushshalaiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the chief fathers of Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.

וַיָּסֹ֨בּוּ֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּקְבְּצ֤וּ אֶת־הַלְוִיִּם֙ מִכָּל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וְרָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָב֖וֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אֶל־יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikero֨t kּal-haqּaha֥l bּeri֛yt bּebe֥yt ha'elohi֖ym 'im-hamּe֑leke vayּo֣'mer lahe֗m hinּe֤h ben-hamּe֨leke֙ yimelo֔ke kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r yehva֖h 'al-bּene֥y daviֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he said to them, "Behold, the king’s son shall reign, as the LORD has said of the sons of David.

וַיִּכְרֹ֨ת כָּל־הַקָּהָ֥ל בְּרִ֛ית בְּבֵ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים עִם־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֗ם הִנֵּ֤ה בֶן־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ יִמְלֹ֔ךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עַל־בְּנֵ֥י דָוִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ze֥h hadּaba֖r 'ashshe֣r tּa'ashs֑u hashshּelishshi֨yt mikּe֜m bּa'e֣y hashshּabּa֗t lakּoֽhaniym֙ velaleviyּi֔m leshshoֽ'are֖y hasּipּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is what you shall do: One-third of you entering on the Sabbath, of the priests and the Levites, shall be keeping watch over the doors;

זֶ֥ה הַדָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ הַשְּׁלִשִׁ֨ית מִכֶּ֜ם בָּאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֗ת לַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְלַלְוִיִּ֔ם לְשֹֽׁעֲרֵ֖י הַסִּפִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehashshּelishshiyt֙ bּebe֣yt hamּe֔leke vehashshּelishshi֖yt bּeshsha֣'ar hayes֑od vekal-ha'a֔m bּechatzer֖ot bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)one-third shall be at the king’s house; and one-third at the Gate of the Foundation. All the people shall be in the courts of the house of the LORD.

וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁית֙ בְּבֵ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖ית בְּשַׁ֣עַר הַיְס֑וֹד וְכָל־הָעָ֔ם בְּחַצְר֖וֹת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-yab֣o beyt-yehva֗h kּi֤y 'im-hakּoֽhaniym֙ vehameshshareti֣ym laleviyּi֔m he֥mּah yabo֖'u kּiy-qo֣deshsh he֑mּah vekal-ha'a֔m yishshemer֖u mishsheme֥ret yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But let no one come into the house of the LORD except the priests and those of the Levites who minister; they may go in, for they are holy; but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.

וְאַל־יָב֣וֹא בֵית־יְהוָ֗ה כִּ֤י אִם־הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ וְהַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים לַלְוִיִּ֔ם הֵ֥מָּה יָבֹ֖אוּ כִּי־קֹ֣דֶשׁ הֵ֑מָּה וְכָל־הָעָ֔ם יִשְׁמְר֖וּ מִשְׁמֶ֥רֶת יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehiqּiypu֩ haleviyּi֨m 'et-hamּe֜leke sabi֗yb 'i֚yshsh vekela֣yv bּeyad֔o vehabּa֥ 'el-habּa֖yit yuma֑t viֽhey֥u 'et-hamּe֖leke bּebo'֥o ubetze'tֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the Levites shall surround the king on every side, every man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever comes into the house, let him be put to death. You shall be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out."

וְהִקִּיפוּ֩ הַלְוִיִּ֨ם אֶת־הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ סָבִ֗יב אִ֚ישׁ וְכֵלָ֣יו בְּיָד֔וֹ וְהַבָּ֥א אֶל־הַבַּ֖יִת יוּמָ֑ת וִֽהְי֥וּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ בְּבֹא֥וֹ וּבְצֵאתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ashs֨u haleviyּi֜m vekal-yehuda֗h kּeko֣l 'ashsher-tziuah֮ yehoyada֣ hakּohen֒ vayּiqechu֙ 'i֣yshsh 'et-'anashsha֔yv bּa'e֣y hashshּabּa֔t 'i֖m yotze'e֣y hashshּabּa֑t kּi֣y lo֥ pata֛r yehoyada֥ hakּohe֖n 'et-haֽmּacheleqֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each man took his men who were to come in on the Sabbath, with those who were to go out on the Sabbath; for Jehoiada the priest had not dismissed the divisions.

וַיַּעֲשׂ֨וּ הַלְוִיִּ֜ם וְכָל־יְהוּדָ֗ה כְּכֹ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּה֮ יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע הַכֹּהֵן֒ וַיִּקְחוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶת־אֲנָשָׁ֔יו בָּאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֔ת עִ֖ם יוֹצְאֵ֣י הַשַּׁבָּ֑ת כִּ֣י לֹ֥א פָטַ֛ר יְהוֹיָדָ֥ע הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֶת־הַֽמַּחְלְקֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּen֩ yehoyada֨ hakּohe֜n leshsare֣y hamּe'֗ot 'et-haֽchaniytiym֙ ve'et-hamּaginּot֙ ve'et-hashshּelati֔ym 'ashshe֖r lamּe֣leke dּavi֑yd 'ashshe֖r bּe֥yt ha'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds the spears and the large and small shields which had belonged to King David, that were in the house of God.

וַיִּתֵּן֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע הַכֹּהֵ֜ן לְשָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֗וֹת אֶת־הַֽחֲנִיתִים֙ וְאֶת־הַמָּגִנּוֹת֙ וְאֶת־הַשְּׁלָטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑יד אֲשֶׁ֖ר בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ame֨d 'et-kּal-ha'a֜m ve'i֣yshsh ׀ shshilech֣o beyad֗o mikּe֨tep habּa֤yit hayemaniyt֙ 'ad-kּe֤tep habּa֨yit֙ hashsּema'li֔yt lamּizebּe֖cha velabּa֑yit 'al-hamּe֖leke sabiֽyb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he set all the people, every man with his weapon in his hand, from the right side of the house to the left side of the house, along by the altar and the house, all around the king.

וַיַּעֲמֵ֨ד אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֜ם וְאִ֣ישׁ ׀ שִׁלְח֣וֹ בְיָד֗וֹ מִכֶּ֨תֶף הַבַּ֤יִת הַיְמָנִית֙ עַד־כֶּ֤תֶף הַבַּ֨יִת֙ הַשְּׂמָאלִ֔ית לַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ וְלַבָּ֑יִת עַל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ סָבִֽיב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּotzi֣y'u 'et-bּen-hamּe֗leke vayּitּen֤u 'alayv֙ 'et-hanּe֨zer֙ ve'et-ha֣'ed֔ut vayּameli֖yku 'ot֑o vayּimeshshachu֨hu֙ yehoyada֣ ubana֔yv vayּo'mer֖u yechi֥y hamּeֽleke׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)And they brought out the king’s son, put the crown on him, gave him the Testimony, and made him king. Then Jehoiada and his sons anointed him, and said, "Long live the king!"

וַיּוֹצִ֣יאוּ אֶת־בֶּן־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וַיִּתְּנ֤וּ עָלָיו֙ אֶת־הַנֵּ֨זֶר֙ וְאֶת־הָ֣עֵד֔וּת וַיַּמְלִ֖יכוּ אֹת֑וֹ וַיִּמְשָׁחֻ֨הוּ֙ יְהוֹיָדָ֣ע וּבָנָ֔יו וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּishshema֣ 'ataleya֗hu 'et-q֤ol ha'am֙ haֽratzi֔ym vehaֽmehaֽleli֖ym 'et-hamּe֑leke vatּab֥o 'el-ha'a֖m bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now when Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she came to the people in the house of the LORD.

וַתִּשְׁמַ֣ע עֲתַלְיָ֗הוּ אֶת־ק֤וֹל הָעָם֙ הָֽרָצִ֔ים וְהַֽמְהַֽלְלִ֖ים אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַתָּב֥וֹא אֶל־הָעָ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֡re vehinּe֣h hamּeleke֩ 'ome֨d 'aֽl-'amּud֜o bּamּab֗o vehashsּari֣ym vehachatzotzerot֮ 'al-hamּeleke֒ vekal-'a֨m ha'a֜retz shsame֗cha vetoqe֨'a֙ bּachatzo֣tzer֔ot vehameshshֽorariym֙ bּikele֣y hashshּi֔yr umodiy'i֖ym lehalּe֑l vatּiqera֤ 'ataleya֨hu֙ 'et-bּegade֔yha vatּo֖'mer qe֥shsher qaֽshsher׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)When she looked, there was the king standing by his pillar at the entrance; and the captains and the trumpeters were by the king. All the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets, also the singers with musical instruments, and those who led in praise. So Athaliah tore her clothes and said, "Treason! Treason!"

וַתֵּ֡רֶא וְהִנֵּ֣ה הַמֶּלֶךְ֩ עוֹמֵ֨ד עַֽל־עַמּוּד֜וֹ בַּמָּב֗וֹא וְהַשָּׂרִ֣ים וְהַחֲצֹצְרוֹת֮ עַל־הַמֶּלֶךְ֒ וְכָל־עַ֨ם הָאָ֜רֶץ שָׂמֵ֗חַ וְתוֹקֵ֨עַ֙ בַּחֲצֹ֣צְר֔וֹת וְהַמְשֽׁוֹרֲרִים֙ בִּכְלֵ֣י הַשִּׁ֔יר וּמוֹדִיעִ֖ים לְהַלֵּ֑ל וַתִּקְרַ֤ע עֲתַלְיָ֨הוּ֙ אֶת־בְּגָדֶ֔יהָ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר קֶ֥שֶׁר קָֽשֶׁר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּotze'֩ yehoyada֨ hakּohe֜n 'et-shsare֥y hamּe'֣ot ׀ pּequde֣y hacha֗yil vayּo֤'mer 'alehem֙ hֽotziy'֨uha֙ 'el-mibּe֣yt hashsּeder֔ot vehabּa֥ 'achare֖yha yuma֣t bּecha֑reb kּi֚y 'ama֣r hakּohe֔n lo֥ temiyt֖uha bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were set over the army, and said to them, "Take her outside under guard, and whoever follows her, let him be killed with the sword." For the priest had said, "Do not kill her in the house of the LORD."

וַיּוֹצֵא֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע הַכֹּהֵ֜ן אֶת־שָׂרֵ֥י הַמֵּא֣וֹת ׀ פְּקוּדֵ֣י הַחַ֗יִל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ הֽוֹצִיא֨וּהָ֙ אֶל־מִבֵּ֣ית הַשְּׂדֵר֔וֹת וְהַבָּ֥א אַחֲרֶ֖יהָ יוּמַ֣ת בֶּחָ֑רֶב כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן לֹ֥א תְמִית֖וּהָ בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashsi֤ymu lahּ֙ yada֔yim vatּab֛o 'el-meb֥o shshaֽ'ar-hasּusi֖ym bּe֣yt hamּe֑leke vayemiyt֖uha shshaֽm׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So they seized her; and she went by way of the entrance of the Horse Gate into the king’s house, and they killed her there.

וַיָּשִׂ֤ימוּ לָהּ֙ יָדַ֔יִם וַתָּב֛וֹא אֶל־מְב֥וֹא שַֽׁעַר־הַסּוּסִ֖ים בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיְמִית֖וּהָ שָֽׁם׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikero֤t yehoyada'֙ bּeri֔yt bּeyn֕o ube֥yn kּal-ha'a֖m ube֣yn hamּe֑leke lihey֥ot le'a֖m layhvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jehoiada made a covenant between himself, the people, and the king, that they should be the LORD’s people.

וַיִּכְרֹ֤ת יְהוֹיָדָע֙ בְּרִ֔ית בֵּינ֕וֹ וּבֵ֥ין כָּל־הָעָ֖ם וּבֵ֣ין הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ לִהְי֥וֹת לְעָ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨'u kal-ha'a֤m bּeyt-habּa֨'al֙ vaֽyּitּetzu֔hu ve'et-mizebּechota֥yv ve'et-tzelama֖yv shshibּe֑ru ve'e֗t matּan֙ kּohe֣n habּa֔'al hareg֖u lipene֥y haֽmּizebּechֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And all the people went to the temple of Baal, and tore it down. They broke in pieces its altars and images, and killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.

וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ כָל־הָעָ֤ם בֵּית־הַבַּ֨עַל֙ וַֽיִּתְּצֻ֔הוּ וְאֶת־מִזְבְּחֹתָ֥יו וְאֶת־צְלָמָ֖יו שִׁבֵּ֑רוּ וְאֵ֗ת מַתָּן֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן הַבַּ֔עַל הָרְג֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י הַֽמִּזְבְּחֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashsem֩ yehoyada֨ pּequdּo֜t bּe֣yt yehva֗h bּeya֨d hakּohani֣ym haleviyּim֮ 'ashshe֣r chala֣q dּaviyd֮ 'al-bּe֣yt yehvah֒ leֽha'al֞ot 'ol֣ot yehva֗h kּakּat֛ub bּetora֥t moshshe֖h bּeshsimecha֣h ubeshshi֑yr 'a֖l yede֥y daviֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was established by David.

וַיָּשֶׂם֩ יְהוֹיָדָ֨ע פְּקֻדֹּ֜ת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֗ה בְּיַ֨ד הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים הַלְוִיִּם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָלַ֣ק דָּוִיד֮ עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוָה֒ לְֽהַעֲל֞וֹת עֹל֣וֹת יְהוָ֗ה כַּכָּת֛וּב בְּתוֹרַ֥ת מֹשֶׁ֖ה בְּשִׂמְחָ֣ה וּבְשִׁ֑יר עַ֖ל יְדֵ֥י דָוִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'amed֙ hashshּ֣o'ari֔ym 'aֽl-shsha'are֖y bּe֣yt yehva֑h veloֽ'-yabo֥ tame֖ lekal-dּabaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he set the gatekeepers at the gates of the house of the LORD, so that no one who was in any way unclean should enter.

וַֽיַּעֲמֵד֙ הַשּׁ֣וֹעֲרִ֔ים עַֽל־שַׁעֲרֵ֖י בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יָבֹ֥א טָמֵ֖א לְכָל־דָּבָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-shsare֣y hamּe'֡ot ve'et-haֽ'adּiyriym֩ ve'et-hamּֽoshsheli֨ym bּa'a֜m ve'e֣t ׀ kּal-'a֣m ha'a֗retz vayּ֤ored 'et-hamּe֨leke֙ mibּe֣yt yehva֔h vayּabo֛'u bּetֽoke-shsha֥'ar haֽ'eley֖on bּe֣yt hamּe֑leke vayּoshshi֨ybu֙ 'et-hamּe֔leke 'a֖l kּisּe֥ hamּamelakaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the LORD; and they went through the Upper Gate to the king’s house, and set the king on the throne of the kingdom.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־שָׂרֵ֣י הַמֵּא֡וֹת וְאֶת־הָֽאַדִּירִים֩ וְאֶת־הַמּֽוֹשְׁלִ֨ים בָּעָ֜ם וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־עַ֣ם הָאָ֗רֶץ וַיּ֤וֹרֶד אֶת־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ בְּתֽוֹךְ־שַׁ֥עַר הָֽעֶלְי֖וֹן בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיּוֹשִׁ֨יבוּ֙ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֥א הַמַּמְלָכָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsemech֥u kal-'am-ha'a֖retz veha'i֣yr shshaqa֑tah ve'et-'ataleya֖hu hemi֥ytu bechaֽreb׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)So all the people of the land rejoiced; and the city was quiet, for they had slain Athaliah with the sword.

וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ כָל־עַם־הָאָ֖רֶץ וְהָעִ֣יר שָׁקָ֑טָה וְאֶת־עֲתַלְיָ֖הוּ הֵמִ֥יתוּ בֶחָֽרֶב׃ס
