Chapter 36
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqechu֙ 'am-ha'a֔retz 'et-yeho'acha֖z bּen-yo'shshiyּa֑hu vayּameliyku֥hu taֽchat-'abi֖yv bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in his father’s place in Jerusalem.

וַיִּקְחוּ֙ עַם־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֶת־יְהוֹאָחָ֖ז בֶּן־יֹאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ וַיַּמְלִיכֻ֥הוּ תַֽחַת־אָבִ֖יו בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shshal֧oshsh ve'eshseri֛ym shshana֖h yo'acha֣z bּemalek֑o ushsheloshsha֣h chodashshi֔ym mala֖ke bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.

בֶּן־שָׁל֧וֹשׁ וְעֶשְׂרִ֛ים שָׁנָ֖ה יוֹאָחָ֣ז בְּמָלְכ֑וֹ וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה חֳדָשִׁ֔ים מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayesiyre֥hu meֽleke-mitzera֖yim bּiֽyrushshala֑im vaֽyּa'anoshsh֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz me'a֥h kikּar-kּe֖sep vekikּa֥r zahaֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.

וַיְסִירֵ֥הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֖יִם בִּֽירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַֽיַּעֲנֹשׁ֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ מֵאָ֥ה כִכַּר־כֶּ֖סֶף וְכִכַּ֥ר זָהָֽב׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּamele֨ke meֽleke-mitzera֜yim 'et-'eleyaqi֣ym 'achi֗yv 'al-yehudah֙ viyr֣ushshalai֔m vayּasּe֥b 'et-shshem֖o yehoyaqi֑ym ve'et-yo'acha֤z 'achiyv֙ laqa֣ch nek֔o vayebiy'e֖hu mitzeraֽyemah׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king of Egypt made Eliakim his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. And Necho took Jehoahaz his brother and carried him to Egypt.

וַיַּמְלֵ֨ךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֜יִם אֶת־אֶלְיָקִ֣ים אָחִ֗יו עַל־יְהוּדָה֙ וִיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וַיַּסֵּ֥ב אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יְהוֹיָקִ֑ים וְאֶת־יוֹאָחָ֤ז אָחִיו֙ לָקַ֣ח נְכ֔וֹ וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'eshseri֨ym vechame֤shsh shshanah֙ yehoyaqi֣ym bּemalek֔o ve'acha֤t 'eshsereh֙ shshana֔h mala֖ke bּiyrushshala֑im vayּa֣'ashs hara֔ bּe'eyne֖y yehva֥h 'elohaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.

בֶּן־עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְחָמֵ֤שׁ שָׁנָה֙ יְהוֹיָקִ֣ים בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ וְאַחַ֤ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָרַ֔ע בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): ala֣yv 'ala֔h nebukadene'tzּa֖r me֣leke bּabe֑l vayּaֽ'asere֨hu֙ bּaֽnechushshetּa֔yim leholiyk֖o bּabeֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him, and bound him in bronze fetters to carry him to Babylon.

עָלָ֣יו עָלָ֔ה נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֑ל וַיַּֽאַסְרֵ֨הוּ֙ בַּֽנְחֻשְׁתַּ֔יִם לְהֹלִיכ֖וֹ בָּבֶֽלָה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): umikּeley֙ bּe֣yt yehva֔h hebi֥y nebukadene'tzּa֖r lebabe֑l vayּitּene֥m bּeheykal֖o bּebabeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Nebuchadnezzar also carried off some of the articles from the house of the LORD to Babylon, and put them in his temple at Babylon.

וּמִכְּלֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה הֵבִ֥יא נְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֖ר לְבָבֶ֑ל וַיִּתְּנֵ֥ם בְּהֵיכָל֖וֹ בְּבָבֶֽל׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyeter֩ dּibere֨y yehֽoyaqi֜ym vetoֽ'abota֤yv 'ashsher-'ashsah֙ vehanּimetza֣ 'ala֔yv hinּa֣m kּetubi֗ym 'al-se֛per maleke֥y yishsera'e֖l viֽyhuda֑h vayּimelo֛ke yehoyaki֥yn bּen֖o tּachetּaֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, the abominations which he did, and what was found against him, indeed they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah. Then Jehoiachin his son reigned in his place.

וְיֶתֶר֩ דִּבְרֵ֨י יְהֽוֹיָקִ֜ים וְתֹֽעֲבֹתָ֤יו אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂה֙ וְהַנִּמְצָ֣א עָלָ֔יו הִנָּ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל־סֵ֛פֶר מַלְכֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וִֽיהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יְהוֹיָכִ֥ין בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּֽיו׃פ

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shshemone֤h shshaniym֙ yehoyaki֣yn bּemalek֔o ushsheloshsha֤h chodashshiym֙ va'ashse֣ret yami֔ym mala֖ke bּiyrushshala֑im vayּa֥'ashs hara֖ bּe'eyne֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jehoiachin was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days; and he did evil in the sight of the LORD.

בֶּן־שְׁמוֹנֶ֤ה שָׁנִים֙ יְהוֹיָכִ֣ין בְּמָלְכ֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשָׁ֤ה חֳדָשִׁים֙ וַעֲשֶׂ֣רֶת יָמִ֔ים מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הָרַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veliteshshuba֣t hashshּana֗h shshalach֙ hamּe֣leke nebֽukadene'tzּa֔r vayebi'e֣hu babe֔lah 'im-kּele֖y chemedּa֣t bּeyt-yehva֑h vayּameleke֙ 'et-tzideqiyּa֣hu 'achi֔yv 'al-yehuda֖h viֽyrushshalaiֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)At the turn of the year King Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, with the costly articles from the house of the LORD, and made Zedekiah, his father’s brother, king over Judah and Jerusalem.

וְלִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת הַשָּׁנָ֗ה שָׁלַח֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ נְבֽוּכַדְנֶאצַּ֔ר וַיְבִאֵ֣הוּ בָבֶ֔לָה עִם־כְּלֵ֖י חֶמְדַּ֣ת בֵּית־יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּמְלֵךְ֙ אֶת־צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ אָחִ֔יו עַל־יְהוּדָ֖ה וִֽירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'eshseri֧ym ve'acha֛t shshana֖h tzideqiyּa֣hu bemalek֑o ve'acha֤t 'eshsereh֙ shshana֔h mala֖ke bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem.

בֶּן־עֶשְׂרִ֧ים וְאַחַ֛ת שָׁנָ֖ה צִדְקִיָּ֣הוּ בְמָלְכ֑וֹ וְאַחַ֤ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs hara֔ bּe'eyne֖y yehva֣h 'eloha֑yv lo֣ nikena֗ milּipene֛y yiremeya֥hu hanּabi֖y mipּi֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He did evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the LORD.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָרַ֔ע בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֑יו לֹ֣א נִכְנַ֗ע מִלִּפְנֵ֛י יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַנָּבִ֖יא מִפִּ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠gam bּamּe֤leke nebֽukadene'tzּar֙ mara֔d 'ashshe֥r hishshebּiy'֖o bּeֽ'lohi֑ym vayּe֤qeshsh 'et-'arepּo֙ vaye'amּe֣tz 'et-lebab֔o mishshּ֕ub 'el-yehva֖h 'elohe֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God; but he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD God of Israel.

וְ֠גַם בַּמֶּ֤לֶךְ נְבֽוּכַדְנֶאצַּר֙ מָרָ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִשְׁבִּיע֖וֹ בֵּֽאלֹהִ֑ים וַיֶּ֤קֶשׁ אֶת־עָרְפּוֹ֙ וַיְאַמֵּ֣ץ אֶת־לְבָב֔וֹ מִשּׁ֕וּב אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּa֠m kּal-shsare֨y hakּohani֤ym veha'am֙ hirebּ֣u lime'avl-ma֔'al kּeko֖l tּo'ab֣ot hagּoyi֑m vaֽyetamּe'u֙ 'et-bּe֣yt yehva֔h 'ashshe֥r hiqedּi֖yshsh bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover all the leaders of the priests and the people transgressed more and more, following all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the house of the LORD which He had hallowed in Jerusalem.

גַּ֠ם כָּל־שָׂרֵ֨י הַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים וְהָעָם֙ הִרְבּ֣וּ לִמְעָול־מַ֔עַל כְּכֹ֖ל תֹּעֲב֣וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וַֽיְטַמְּאוּ֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִקְדִּ֖ישׁ בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֡ch yehvah֩ 'elohe֨y 'aboteyhe֧m 'aleyhe֛m bּeya֥d male'aka֖yv hashshekּe֣m veshshal֑ocha kּiֽy-chama֥l 'al-'amּ֖o ve'al-me'onֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֡ח יְהוָה֩ אֱלֹהֵ֨י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֧ם עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם בְּיַ֥ד מַלְאָכָ֖יו הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם וְשָׁל֑וֹחַ כִּֽי־חָמַ֥ל עַל־עַמּ֖וֹ וְעַל־מְעוֹנֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽhey֤u male'ibiym֙ bּemale'ake֣y ha'elohi֔ym ubozi֣ym dּebara֔yv umiֽtּa'etּe'i֖ym bּinebi'a֑yv 'a֠d 'al֧ot chamat-yehva֛h bּe'amּ֖o 'ad-le'e֥yn marepּeֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, until there was no remedy.

וַיִּֽהְי֤וּ מַלְעִבִים֙ בְּמַלְאֲכֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וּבוֹזִ֣ים דְּבָרָ֔יו וּמִֽתַּעְתְּעִ֖ים בִּנְבִאָ֑יו עַ֠ד עֲל֧וֹת חֲמַת־יְהוָ֛ה בְּעַמּ֖וֹ עַד־לְאֵ֥ין מַרְפֵּֽא׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'al 'aleyhe֜m 'et-me֣leke kshdyym kּashsedּi֗ym vayּaharo֨g bּachureyhe֤m bּache֨reb֙ bּebe֣yt miqedּashsha֔m velo֥ chama֛l 'al-bּach֥ur ubetula֖h zaqe֣n veyashshe֑shsh hakּo֖l nata֥n bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore He brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, on the aged or the weak; He gave them all into his hand.

וַיַּ֨עַל עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם אֶת־מֶ֣לֶךְ כשדיים כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג בַּחוּרֵיהֶ֤ם בַּחֶ֨רֶב֙ בְּבֵ֣ית מִקְדָּשָׁ֔ם וְלֹ֥א חָמַ֛ל עַל־בָּח֥וּר וּבְתוּלָ֖ה זָקֵ֣ן וְיָשֵׁ֑שׁ הַכֹּ֖ל נָתַ֥ן בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠kol kּele֞y bּe֤yt ha'elohiym֙ hagּedoli֣ym vehaqּetanּi֔ym ve'oֽtzerot֙ bּe֣yt yehva֔h ve'otzer֥ot hamּe֖leke veshsara֑yv hakּo֖l hebi֥y babeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And all the articles from the house of God, great and small, the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king and of his leaders, all these he took to Babylon.

וְ֠כֹל כְּלֵ֞י בֵּ֤ית הָאֱלֹהִים֙ הַגְּדֹלִ֣ים וְהַקְּטַנִּ֔ים וְאֹֽצְרוֹת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה וְאֹצְר֥וֹת הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וְשָׂרָ֑יו הַכֹּ֖ל הֵבִ֥יא בָבֶֽל׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishserepu֙ 'et-bּe֣yt ha'elohi֔ym vaֽyenatּetz֔u 'e֖t choma֣t yerushshala֑im vekal-'aremenote֨yha֙ shsarep֣u ba'e֔shsh vekal-kּele֥y machamadּe֖yha lehashshechiֽyt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious articles.

וַֽיִּשְׂרְפוּ֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַֽיְנַתְּצ֔וּ אֵ֖ת חוֹמַ֣ת יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְכָל־אַרְמְנוֹתֶ֨יהָ֙ שָׂרְפ֣וּ בָאֵ֔שׁ וְכָל־כְּלֵ֥י מַחֲמַדֶּ֖יהָ לְהַשְׁחִֽית׃ס

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֛gel hashshּe'eri֥yt min-hache֖reb 'el-bּabe֑l vaֽyּiheyu-l֤o ulebanayv֙ la'abadi֔ym 'ad-melo֖ke malek֥ut pּaraֽs׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, where they became servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia,

וַיֶּ֛גֶל הַשְּׁאֵרִ֥ית מִן־הַחֶ֖רֶב אֶל־בָּבֶ֑ל וַֽיִּהְיוּ־ל֤וֹ וּלְבָנָיו֙ לַעֲבָדִ֔ים עַד־מְלֹ֖ךְ מַלְכ֥וּת פָּרָֽס׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): lemalּo֤'vt dּebar-yehvah֙ bּepi֣y yiremeya֔hu 'ad-ratzeta֥h ha'a֖retz 'et-shshabּetote֑yha kּal-yeme֤y hashshּamּah֙ shshaba֔tah lemalּo֖'vt shshibe'i֥ym shshanaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)to fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfil seventy years.

לְמַלֹּ֤אות דְּבַר־יְהוָה֙ בְּפִ֣י יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ עַד־רָצְתָ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ אֶת־שַׁבְּתוֹתֶ֑יהָ כָּל־יְמֵ֤י הָשַּׁמָּה֙ שָׁבָ֔תָה לְמַלֹּ֖אות שִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubishshena֣t 'acha֗t lek֨oreshsh֙ me֣leke pּara֔s likel֥ot dּebar-yehva֖h bּepi֣y yiremeya֑hu he'i֣yr yehva֗h 'et-r֨ucha֙ kּ֣oreshsh meֽleke-pּara֔s vayּaֽ'aber-qol֙ bּekal-malekut֔o vegam-bּemiketּa֖b le'moֽr׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying,

וּבִשְׁנַ֣ת אַחַ֗ת לְכ֨וֹרֶשׁ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרַ֔ס לִכְל֥וֹת דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה בְּפִ֣י יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ הֵעִ֣יר יְהוָ֗ה אֶת־ר֨וּחַ֙ כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ מֶֽלֶךְ־פָּרַ֔ס וַיַּֽעֲבֶר־קוֹל֙ בְּכָל־מַלְכוּת֔וֹ וְגַם־בְּמִכְתָּ֖ב לֵאמֹֽר׃ס

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּoh-'ama֞r kּ֣oreshsh ׀ me֣leke pּara֗s kּal-mamelek֤ot ha'a֨retz֙ na֣tan li֗y yehvah֙ 'elohe֣y hashshּama֔yim vehֽu'-paqa֤d 'alay֙ libenֽot-l֣o ba֔yit bּiyrushshala֖im 'ashshe֣r bּiֽyhuda֑h miֽy-bake֣m mikּal-'amּ֗o yehva֧h 'eloha֛yv 'imּ֖o veyaֽ'al׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: 'All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given me. And He has commanded me to build Him a house in Jerusalem which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all His people? May the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up!'

כֹּה־אָמַ֞ר כּ֣וֹרֶשׁ ׀ מֶ֣לֶךְ פָּרַ֗ס כָּל־מַמְלְכ֤וֹת הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ נָ֣תַן לִ֗י יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְהֽוּא־פָקַ֤ד עָלַי֙ לִבְנֽוֹת־ל֣וֹ בַ֔יִת בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה מִֽי־בָכֶ֣ם מִכָּל־עַמּ֗וֹ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהָ֛יו עִמּ֖וֹ וְיָֽעַל׃
