Chapter 8

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y miqּe֣tz ׀ 'eshseri֣ym shshana֗h 'ashshe֨r bּana֧h shshelomo֛h 'et-bּe֥yt yehva֖h ve'et-bּeytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)It came to pass at the end of twenty years, in which Solomon had built the house of the LORD and his own palace,

וַיְהִ֞י מִקֵּ֣ץ ׀ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּנָ֧ה שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה וְאֶת־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe'ari֗ym 'ashshe֨r nata֤n churam֙ lishshelomo֔h bּana֥h shshelomo֖h 'ota֑m vayּ֥oshsheb shsha֖m 'et-bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)that the cities which Huram had given to Solomon, Solomon built them up; and he settled the children of Israel there.

וְהֶעָרִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤ן חוּרָם֙ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה בָּנָ֥ה שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה אֹתָ֑ם וַיּ֥וֹשֶׁב שָׁ֖ם אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤leke shshelomoh֙ chama֣t tzoba֔h vayּecheza֖q 'aleֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Solomon went to Hamath Zobah and seized it.

וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹה֙ חֲמָ֣ת צוֹבָ֔ה וַיֶּחֱזַ֖ק עָלֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֥ben 'et-tּademo֖r bּamּidebּa֑r ve'et֙ kּal-'are֣y haֽmּisekּen֔ot 'ashshe֥r bּana֖h bּachamaֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He also built Tadmor in the wilderness, and all the storage cities which he built in Hamath.

וַיִּ֥בֶן אֶת־תַּדְמֹ֖ר בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְאֵת֙ כָּל־עָרֵ֣י הַֽמִּסְכְּנ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנָ֖ה בַּחֲמָֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֜ben 'et-bּe֤yt choron֙ haֽ'eley֔on ve'et-bּe֥yt chor֖on hatּachetּ֑on 'are֣y matz֔or chom֖ot dּelata֥yim uberiֽycha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He built Upper Beth Horon and Lower Beth Horon, fortified cities with walls, gates, and bars,

וַיִּ֜בֶן אֶת־בֵּ֤ית חוֹרוֹן֙ הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן וְאֶת־בֵּ֥ית חוֹר֖וֹן הַתַּחְתּ֑וֹן עָרֵ֣י מָצ֔וֹר חוֹמ֖וֹת דְּלָתַ֥יִם וּבְרִֽיחַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'eֽt-bּa'ala֗t ve'e֨t kּal-'are֤y haֽmּisekּenot֙ 'ashshe֣r hay֣u lishshelomo֔h ve'et֙ kּal-'are֣y hare֔keb ve'e֖t 'are֣y hapּarashshi֑ym ve'e֣t ׀ kּal-che֣shsheq shshelomo֗h 'ashshe֤r chashshaq֙ liben֤ot bּiyrֽushshalai֨m֙ ubalּeban֔on ubeko֖l 'e֥retz memeshshaletּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)also Baalath and all the storage cities that Solomon had, and all the chariot cities and the cities of the horsemen, and all that Solomon desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon, and in all the land of his dominion.

וְאֶֽת־בַּעֲלָ֗ת וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־עָרֵ֤י הַֽמִּסְכְּנוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֣וּ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֔ה וְאֵת֙ כָּל־עָרֵ֣י הָרֶ֔כֶב וְאֵ֖ת עָרֵ֣י הַפָּרָשִׁ֑ים וְאֵ֣ת ׀ כָּל־חֵ֣שֶׁק שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָשַׁק֙ לִבְנ֤וֹת בִּירֽוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ וּבַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וּבְכֹ֖ל אֶ֥רֶץ מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-ha֠'am hanּota֨r min-hachitּi֜y veha'emori֤y vehapּerizּiy֙ vehachiui֣y vehayebusi֔y 'ashshe֛r lo֥ miyּishsera'e֖l heֽmּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All the people who were left of the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites, who were not of Israel,

כָּל־הָ֠עָם הַנּוֹתָ֨ר מִן־הַחִתִּ֜י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֤י וְהַפְּרִזִּי֙ וְהַחִוִּ֣י וְהַיְבוּסִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹ֥א מִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הֵֽמָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): min-bּeneyhe֗m 'ashshe֨r noter֤u 'achareyhem֙ bּa'a֔retz 'ashshe֥r loֽ'-kilּ֖um bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּa'ale֤m shshelomoh֙ lema֔s 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)that is, their descendants who were left in the land after them, whom the children of Israel did not destroy, from these Solomon raised forced labour to this day.

מִן־בְּנֵיהֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר נוֹתְר֤וּ אַחֲרֵיהֶם֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־כִלּ֖וּם בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּעֲלֵ֤ם שְׁלֹמֹה֙ לְמַ֔ס עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umin-bּeney֙ yishsera'e֔l 'a֠shsher lo'-nata֧n shshelomo֛h la'abadi֖ym limela'ketּ֑o kּiy-he֜mּah 'aneshshe֤y milechamah֙ veshsare֣y shshaliyshsha֔yv veshsare֥y rikebּ֖o uparashshaֽyv׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)But Solomon did not make slaves of the children of Israel for his work, for they were men of war, captains of his officers, captains of his chariots, and his horsemen.

וּמִן־בְּנֵי֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹא־נָתַ֧ן שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה לַעֲבָדִ֖ים לִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ כִּי־הֵ֜מָּה אַנְשֵׁ֤י מִלְחָמָה֙ וְשָׂרֵ֣י שָׁלִישָׁ֔יו וְשָׂרֵ֥י רִכְבּ֖וֹ וּפָרָשָֽׁיו׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh shsare֤y hntzybym hanּitzּabi֛ym 'ashsher-lamּe֥leke shshelomo֖h chamishshּi֣ym uma'ta֑yim harodi֖ym bּa'aֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And these were the chief of King Solomon’s officials, two hundred and fifty, who ruled over the people.

וְאֵ֨לֶּה שָׂרֵ֤י הנציבים הַנִּצָּבִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־לַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה חֲמִשִּׁ֣ים וּמָאתָ֑יִם הָרֹדִ֖ים בָּעָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-bּat-pּare'o֗h he'ela֤h shshelomoh֙ me'i֣yr dּavi֔yd labּa֖yit 'ashshe֣r bּaֽnah-la֑hּ kּi֣y 'ama֗r lo'-teshshe֨b 'ishshּa֥h liy֙ bּebeyt֙ dּavi֣yd meֽleke-yishsera'e֔l kּiy-qo֣deshsh he֔mּah 'ashsher-bּaֽ'a֥h 'aleyhe֖m 'ar֥on yehvaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Now Solomon brought the daughter of Pharaoh up from the City of David to the house he had built for her, for he said, "My wife shall not dwell in the house of David king of Israel, because the places to which the ark of the LORD has come are holy."

וְאֶת־בַּת־פַּרְעֹ֗ה הֶעֱלָ֤ה שְׁלֹמֹה֙ מֵעִ֣יר דָּוִ֔יד לַבַּ֖יִת אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּֽנָה־לָ֑הּ כִּ֣י אָמַ֗ר לֹא־תֵשֵׁ֨ב אִשָּׁ֥ה לִי֙ בְּבֵית֙ דָּוִ֣יד מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּי־קֹ֣דֶשׁ הֵ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁר־בָּֽאָ֥ה אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם אֲר֥וֹן יְהוָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣z he'ela֧h shshelomo֛h 'ol֖ot layhva֑h 'a֚l mizebּa֣ch yehva֔h 'ashshe֥r bּana֖h lipene֥y ha'ulaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Solomon offered burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of the LORD which he had built in front of the vestibule,

אָ֣ז הֶעֱלָ֧ה שְׁלֹמֹ֛ה עֹל֖וֹת לַיהוָ֑ה עַ֚ל מִזְבַּ֣ח יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י הָאוּלָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubidebar-y֣om bּey֗om leha'alot֙ kּemitzeva֣t moshshe֔h lashshּabּatot֙ vele֣chodashshi֔ym velamּ֣o'ad֔ot shshal֥oshsh pּe'ami֖ym bּashshּana֑h bּecha֧g hamּatzּ֛ot ubecha֥g hashshּabu'֖ot ubecha֥g hasּukּֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)according to the daily rate, offering according to the commandment of Moses, for the Sabbaths, the New Moons, and the three appointed yearly feasts: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Weeks, and the Feast of Tabernacles.

וּבִדְבַר־י֣וֹם בְּי֗וֹם לְהַעֲלוֹת֙ כְּמִצְוַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֔ה לַשַּׁבָּתוֹת֙ וְלֶ֣חֳדָשִׁ֔ים וְלַמּ֣וֹעֲד֔וֹת שָׁל֥וֹשׁ פְּעָמִ֖ים בַּשָּׁנָ֑ה בְּחַ֧ג הַמַּצּ֛וֹת וּבְחַ֥ג הַשָּׁבֻע֖וֹת וּבְחַ֥ג הַסֻּכּֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ame֣d kּemishshepּa֣t dּaֽviyd-'a֠biyv 'et-macheleq֨ot hakּohani֜ym 'al-'abodata֗m vehaleviyּi֣m 'al-mi֠shshemerotam lehalּe֨l uleshshare֜t ne֤ged hakּoֽhaniym֙ lidebar-y֣om bּeyom֔o vehashshּo'ari֥ym bּemacheleqota֖m leshsha֣'ar vashsha֑'ar kּi֣y ke֔n mitzeva֖t dּavi֥yd 'iyshsh-ha'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And according to the ordinance of David his father, he appointed the divisions of the priests for their service, the Levites for their duties (to praise and serve before the priests, as the duty of each day required), and the gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate; for so David the man of God had commanded.

וַיַּעֲמֵ֣ד כְּמִשְׁפַּ֣ט דָּֽוִיד־אָ֠בִיו אֶת־מַחְלְק֨וֹת הַכֹּהֲנִ֜ים עַל־עֲבֹדָתָ֗ם וְהַלְוִיִּ֣ם עַל־מִ֠שְׁמְרוֹתָם לְהַלֵּ֨ל וּלְשָׁרֵ֜ת נֶ֤גֶד הַכֹּֽהֲנִים֙ לִדְבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ וְהַשּׁוֹעֲרִ֥ים בְּמַחְלְקוֹתָ֖ם לְשַׁ֣עַר וָשָׁ֑עַר כִּ֣י כֵ֔ן מִצְוַ֖ת דָּוִ֥יד אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֣ saru֩ mitzeva֨t hamּe֜leke 'al-hakּohani֧ym vehaleviyּi֛m lekal-dּaba֖r vela'otzarֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They did not depart from the commandment of the king to the priests and Levites concerning any matter or concerning the treasuries.

וְלֹ֣א סָרוּ֩ מִצְוַ֨ת הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ עַל־הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֛ם לְכָל־דָּבָ֖ר וְלָאֹצָרֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּikּon֙ kּal-mele֣'ket shshelomo֔h 'ad-hayּ֛om musa֥d bּeyt-yehva֖h ve'ad-kּelot֑o shshale֖m bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Now all the work of Solomon was well-ordered from the day of the foundation of the house of the LORD until it was finished. So the house of the LORD was completed.

וַתִּכֹּן֙ כָּל־מְלֶ֣אכֶת שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה עַד־הַיּ֛וֹם מוּסַ֥ד בֵּית־יְהוָ֖ה וְעַד־כְּלֹת֑וֹ שָׁלֵ֖ם בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): az֩ hala֨ke shshelomo֜h le'etzeyֽon-gּe֧ber ve'el-'eyl֛ot 'al-shsepa֥t hayּa֖m bּe'e֥retz 'edֽom׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Solomon went to Ezion-Geber and Elath on the seacoast, in the land of Edom.

אָז֩ הָלַ֨ךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה לְעֶצְיֽוֹן־גֶּ֧בֶר וְאֶל־אֵיל֛וֹת עַל־שְׂפַ֥ת הַיָּ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ אֱדֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽshshelaֽch-lo֩ chura֨m bּeyad-'abada֜yv 'vnyvt 'oniyּ֗ot va'abadiym֮ y֣ode'ey yam֒ vayּabo֜'u 'im-'abede֤y shshelomoh֙ 'opi֔yrah vayּiqech֣u mishshּa֔m 'arebּa'-me'֥ot vachamishshּi֖ym kּikּa֣r zaha֑b vayּabi֖y'u 'el-hamּe֥leke shshelomoֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And Huram sent him ships by the hand of his servants, and servants who knew the sea. They went with the servants of Solomon to Ophir, and acquired four hundred and fifty talents of gold from there, and brought it to King Solomon.

וַיִּֽשְׁלַֽח־לוֹ֩ חוּרָ֨ם בְּיַד־עֲבָדָ֜יו אוניות אֳנִיּ֗וֹת וַעֲבָדִים֮ י֣וֹדְעֵי יָם֒ וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ עִם־עַבְדֵ֤י שְׁלֹמֹה֙ אוֹפִ֔ירָה וַיִּקְח֣וּ מִשָּׁ֔ם אַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים כִּכַּ֣ר זָהָ֑ב וַיָּבִ֖יאוּ אֶל־הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃פ
