Chapter 22
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shshemone֤h shshanah֙ yo'shshiyּa֣hu bemalek֔o ushsheloshshi֤ym ve'achat֙ shshana֔h mala֖ke bּiyrushshala֑im veshshe֣m 'imּ֔o yediyda֥h bat-'ada֖yah mibּatzeqaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

בֶּן־שְׁמֹנֶ֤ה שָׁנָה֙ יֹאשִׁיָּ֣הוּ בְמָלְכ֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֤ים וְאַחַת֙ שָׁנָ֔ה מָלַ֖ךְ בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְשֵׁ֣ם אִמּ֔וֹ יְדִידָ֥ה בַת־עֲדָ֖יָה מִבָּצְקַֽת׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'ashs hayּashsha֖r bּe'eyne֣y yehva֑h vayּe֗leke bּekal-dּe֨reke֙ dּavi֣d 'abi֔yv velo'-sa֖r yami֥yn ushsemoֽ'vl׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

וַיַּ֥עַשׂ הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ בְּכָל־דֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֔יו וְלֹא־סָ֖ר יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּishshemone֤h 'eshsereh֙ shshana֔h lamּe֖leke yo'shshiyּa֑hu shshala֣ch ha֠mּeleke 'et-shshapa֨n bּen-'atzaleya֤hu ben-meshshulּam֙ hasּope֔r bּe֥yt yehva֖h le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying:

וַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁמֹנֶ֤ה עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יֹאשִׁיָּ֑הוּ שָׁלַ֣ח הַ֠מֶּלֶךְ אֶת־שָׁפָ֨ן בֶּן־אֲצַלְיָ֤הוּ בֶן־מְשֻׁלָּם֙ הַסֹּפֵ֔ר בֵּ֥ית יְהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹֽר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ale֗h 'el-chileqiyּa֨hu֙ hakּohe֣n hagּad֔ol veyatּe֣m 'et-hakּe֔sep hamּuba֖ bּe֣yt yehva֑h 'ashshe֥r 'asep֛u shshomere֥y hasּa֖p me'e֥t ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Go up to Hilkiah the chief priest, that he may count the money which has been brought into the house of the LORD, which the doorkeepers have gathered from the people.

עֲלֵ֗ה אֶל־חִלְקִיָּ֨הוּ֙ הַכֹּהֵ֣ן הַגָּד֔וֹל וְיַתֵּ֣ם אֶת־הַכֶּ֔סֶף הַמּוּבָ֖א בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָסְפ֛וּ שֹׁמְרֵ֥י הַסַּ֖ף מֵאֵ֥ת הָעָֽם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vytnh veyitּenu֗hu 'al-yad֙ 'oshse֣y hamּela'ka֔h hamּupeqadi֖ym bbyt bּe֣yt yehva֑h veyitּen֣u 'ot֗o le'oshse֤y hamּela'kah֙ 'ashsher֙ bּebe֣yt yehva֔h lechazּe֖q bּe֥deq habּaֽyit׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And let them deliver it into the hand of those doing the work, who are the overseers in the house of the LORD; let them give it to those who are in the house of the LORD doing the work, to repair the damages of the house,

ויתנה וְיִתְּנֻ֗הוּ עַל־יַד֙ עֹשֵׂ֣י הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים בבית בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וְיִתְּנ֣וּ אֹת֗וֹ לְעֹשֵׂ֤י הַמְּלָאכָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה לְחַזֵּ֖ק בֶּ֥דֶק הַבָּֽיִת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): lecha֣rashshi֔ym velabּoni֖ym velagּoֽderi֑ym veliqen֤ot 'etziym֙ ve'abene֣y machetze֔b lechazּe֖q 'et-habּaֽyit׃
Edified Edition (EDE)To carpenters and builders and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house."

לֶחָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וְלַבֹּנִ֖ים וְלַגֹּֽדְרִ֑ים וְלִקְנ֤וֹת עֵצִים֙ וְאַבְנֵ֣י מַחְצֵ֔ב לְחַזֵּ֖ק אֶת־הַבָּֽיִת׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֚ke lo'-yechashshe֣b 'itּa֔m hakּe֖sep hanּitּa֣n 'al-yada֑m kּi֥y be'emuna֖h he֥m 'oshsiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)However, there was no accounting requested of them for the money delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.

אַ֚ךְ לֹא־יֵחָשֵׁ֣ב אִתָּ֔ם הַכֶּ֖סֶף הַנִּתָּ֣ן עַל־יָדָ֑ם כִּ֥י בֶאֱמוּנָ֖ה הֵ֥ם עֹשִֽׂים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠yּo'mer chileqiyּa֜hu hakּohe֤n hagּadol֙ 'al-shshapa֣n hasּope֔r se֧per hatּora֛h matza֖'tiy bּebe֣yt yehva֑h vayּitּe֨n chileqiyּa֧h 'et-hasּe֛per 'el-shshapa֖n vayּiqera'eֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Hilkiah the chief priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law in the house of the LORD." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

וַ֠יֹּאמֶר חִלְקִיָּ֜הוּ הַכֹּהֵ֤ן הַגָּדוֹל֙ עַל־שָׁפָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֔ר סֵ֧פֶר הַתּוֹרָ֛ה מָצָ֖אתִי בְּבֵ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֨ן חִלְקִיָּ֧ה אֶת־הַסֵּ֛פֶר אֶל־שָׁפָ֖ן וַיִּקְרָאֵֽהוּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֞ shshapa֤n hasּoper֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke vayּa֥shsheb 'et-hamּe֖leke dּaba֑r vayּo֗'mer hitּi֤yku 'abade֨yka֙ 'et-hakּe֨sep֙ hanּimetza֣ babּa֔yit vaֽyּitּenu֗hu 'al-yad֙ 'oshse֣y hamּela'ka֔h hamּupeqadi֖ym bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Shaphan the scribe went to the king, bringing the king word, saying, "Your servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of those who do the work, who oversee the house of the LORD."

וַיָּבֹ֞א שָׁפָ֤ן הַסֹּפֵר֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֥שֶׁב אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָ֑ר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִתִּ֤יכוּ עֲבָדֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶת־הַכֶּ֨סֶף֙ הַנִּמְצָ֣א בַבַּ֔יִת וַֽיִּתְּנֻ֗הוּ עַל־יַד֙ עֹשֵׂ֣י הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה הַמֻּפְקָדִ֖ים בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּagּe֞d shshapa֤n hasּoper֙ lamּe֣leke le'mo֔r se֚per na֣tan li֔y chileqiyּa֖h hakּohe֑n vayּiqera'e֥hu shshapa֖n lipene֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read it before the king.

וַיַּגֵּ֞ד שָׁפָ֤ן הַסֹּפֵר֙ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֔ר סֵ֚פֶר נָ֣תַן לִ֔י חִלְקִיָּ֖ה הַכֹּהֵ֑ן וַיִּקְרָאֵ֥הוּ שָׁפָ֖ן לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ kּishshemo֣'a hamּe֔leke 'et-dּibere֖y se֣per hatּora֑h vayּiqera֖ 'et-bּegadaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes.

וַֽיְהִי֙ כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֖י סֵ֣פֶר הַתּוֹרָ֑ה וַיִּקְרַ֖ע אֶת־בְּגָדָֽיו׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֣v hamּe֡leke 'et-chileqiyּa֣h hakּohe֡n ve'et-'achiyqa֣m bּen-shsha֠pan ve'et-'akebּ֨or bּen-miykaya֜h ve'e֣t ׀ shshapa֣n hasּope֗r ve'e֛t 'ashsaya֥h 'eֽbed-hamּe֖leke le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Achbor the son of Michaiah, Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah a servant of the king, saying,

וַיְצַ֣ו הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ אֶת־חִלְקִיָּ֣ה הַכֹּהֵ֡ן וְאֶת־אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן־שָׁ֠פָן וְאֶת־עַכְבּ֨וֹר בֶּן־מִיכָיָ֜ה וְאֵ֣ת ׀ שָׁפָ֣ן הַסֹּפֵ֗ר וְאֵ֛ת עֲשָׂיָ֥ה עֶֽבֶד־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֵאמֹֽר׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): leku֩ direshsh֨u 'et-yehva֜h bּa'adi֣y ube'ad-ha'a֗m ube'ad֙ kּal-yehuda֔h 'al-dּibere֛y hasּe֥per hanּimetza֖ hazּe֑h kּiֽy-gedola֞h chama֣t yehva֗h 'ashsher-hiy'֙ nitzּeta֣h ba֔nu 'al֩ 'ashshe֨r loֽ'-shshame'֜u 'abote֗ynu 'al-dּiberey֙ hasּe֣per hazּe֔h la'ashs֖ot kּekal-hakּat֥ub 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Go, inquire of the LORD for me, for the people and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that has been found; for great is the wrath of the LORD that is aroused against us, because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book, to do according to all that is written concerning us."

לְכוּ֩ דִרְשׁ֨וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֜ה בַּעֲדִ֣י וּבְעַד־הָעָ֗ם וּבְעַד֙ כָּל־יְהוּדָ֔ה עַל־דִּבְרֵ֛י הַסֵּ֥פֶר הַנִּמְצָ֖א הַזֶּ֑ה כִּֽי־גְדוֹלָ֞ה חֲמַ֣ת יְהוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־הִיא֙ נִצְּתָ֣ה בָ֔נוּ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־שָׁמְע֜וּ אֲבֹתֵ֗ינוּ עַל־דִּבְרֵי֙ הַסֵּ֣פֶר הַזֶּ֔ה לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת כְּכָל־הַכָּת֥וּב עָלֵֽינוּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke chileqiyּa֣hu ha֠kּohen va'achiyqa֨m ve'akebּ֜or veshshapa֣n va'ashsaya֗h 'el-chuledּa֨h hanּebiy'a֜h 'e֣shshet ׀ shshalּu֣m bּen-tּiqeva֗h bּen-charechas֙ shshome֣r habּegadi֔ym vehi֛y yoshshe֥bet bּiyrushshala֖im bּamּishshene֑h vaֽyedabּer֖u 'eleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Hilkiah the priest, Ahikam, Achbor, Shaphan, and Asaiah went to Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe. (She lived in Jerusalem in the Second Quarter.) And they spoke with her.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ חִלְקִיָּ֣הוּ הַ֠כֹּהֵן וַאֲחִיקָ֨ם וְעַכְבּ֜וֹר וְשָׁפָ֣ן וַעֲשָׂיָ֗ה אֶל־חֻלְדָּ֨ה הַנְּבִיאָ֜ה אֵ֣שֶׁת ׀ שַׁלֻּ֣ם בֶּן־תִּקְוָ֗ה בֶּן־חַרְחַס֙ שֹׁמֵ֣ר הַבְּגָדִ֔ים וְהִ֛יא יֹשֶׁ֥בֶת בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם בַּמִּשְׁנֶ֑ה וַֽיְדַבְּר֖וּ אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֔m kּoֽh-'ama֥r yehva֖h 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֑l 'imer֣u la'i֔yshsh 'ashsher-shshala֥ch 'eteke֖m 'elaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then she said to them, "Thus says the LORD God of Israel: 'Tell the man who sent you to Me,

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּֽה־אָמַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל אִמְר֣וּ לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֥ח אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֚h 'ama֣r yehva֔h hineni֨y mebi֥y ra'a֛h 'el-hamּaq֥om hazּe֖h ve'al-yoֽshsheba֑yv 'e֚t kּal-dּibere֣y hasּe֔per 'ashshe֥r qara֖ me֥leke yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus says the LORD: 'Behold, I will bring calamity on this place and on its inhabitants, all the words of the book which the king of Judah has read,

כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י מֵבִ֥יא רָעָ֛ה אֶל־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וְעַל־יֹֽשְׁבָ֑יו אֵ֚ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י הַסֵּ֔פֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר קָרָ֖א מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּa֣chat ׀ 'ashshe֣r 'azab֗uniy vaֽyeqatּeru֙ le'lohi֣ym 'acheri֔ym lema֨'an֙ hake'iyse֔niy bּeko֖l ma'ashse֣h yedeyhe֑m venitzּeta֧h chamati֛y bּamּaq֥om hazּe֖h velo֥ tikebּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)because they have forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods, that they might provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. Therefore My wrath shall be aroused against this place and shall not be quenched.'"

תַּ֣חַת ׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲזָב֗וּנִי וַֽיְקַטְּרוּ֙ לֵאלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים לְמַ֨עַן֙ הַכְעִיסֵ֔נִי בְּכֹ֖ל מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְדֵיהֶ֑ם וְנִצְּתָ֧ה חֲמָתִ֛י בַּמָּק֥וֹם הַזֶּ֖ה וְלֹ֥א תִכְבֶּֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-me֣leke yehuda֗h hashshּole֤cha 'etekem֙ lidero֣shsh 'et-yehva֔h kּo֥h to'mer֖u 'ela֑yv kּoֽh-'ama֤r yehvah֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l hadּebari֖ym 'ashshe֥r shshamaֽ'etּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, in this manner you shall speak to him, 'Thus says the LORD God of Israel: "Concerning the words which you have heard,

וְאֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה הַשֹּׁלֵ֤חַ אֶתְכֶם֙ לִדְרֹ֣שׁ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה כֹּ֥ה תֹאמְר֖וּ אֵלָ֑יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַדְּבָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמָֽעְתָּ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ya֠'an rake-leba֨beka֜ vatּikּana֣ ׀ mipּene֣y yehva֗h bּeֽshshame'aka֡ 'ashshe֣r dּibּaretּiy֩ 'al-hamּaq֨om hazּe֜h ve'al-yoshsheba֗yv lihey֤ot leshshamּah֙ veliqelala֔h vatּiqera'֙ 'et-bּegade֔yka vatּibekּe֖h lepana֑y vega֧m 'anoki֛y shshama֖'etּiy ne'um-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I spoke against this place and against its inhabitants, that they would become a desolation and a curse, and you tore your clothes and wept before Me, I also have heard you," says the LORD.

יַ֠עַן רַךְ־לְבָ֨בְךָ֜ וַתִּכָּנַ֣ע ׀ מִפְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בְּֽשָׁמְעֲךָ֡ אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבַּרְתִּי֩ עַל־הַמָּק֨וֹם הַזֶּ֜ה וְעַל־יֹשְׁבָ֗יו לִהְי֤וֹת לְשַׁמָּה֙ וְלִקְלָלָ֔ה וַתִּקְרַע֙ אֶת־בְּגָדֶ֔יךָ וַתִּבְכֶּ֖ה לְפָנָ֑י וְגַ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי נְאֻם־יְהוָֽה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): laken֩ hineni֨y 'oֽsipeka֜ 'al-'abote֗yka vene'esapetּa֣ 'el-qiberoteyka֮ bּeshshalom֒ velo'-tire'e֣ynah 'eyne֔yka bּekol֙ haֽra'a֔h 'ashsher-'ani֥y mebi֖y 'al-hamּaq֣om hazּe֑h vayּashshi֥ybu 'et-hamּe֖leke dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Surely, therefore, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace; and your eyes shall not see all the calamity which I will bring on this place."'" So they brought back word to the king.

לָכֵן֩ הִנְנִ֨י אֹֽסִפְךָ֜ עַל־אֲבֹתֶ֗יךָ וְנֶאֱסַפְתָּ֣ אֶל־קִבְרֹתֶיךָ֮ בְּשָׁלוֹם֒ וְלֹא־תִרְאֶ֣ינָה עֵינֶ֔יךָ בְּכֹל֙ הָֽרָעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֥י מֵבִ֖יא עַל־הַמָּק֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַיָּשִׁ֥יבוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָֽר׃
