Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ishshּa֣h 'acha֣t minּeshshe֣y beneֽy-ha֠nּebiy'iym tza'aqa֨h 'el-'eliyshsha֜ le'mo֗r 'abedּeka֤ 'iyshshiy֙ me֔t ve'atּa֣h yada֔'etּa kּi֣y 'abedּeka֔ haya֥h yare֖ 'et-yehva֑h veha֨nּoshshe֔h bּa֗ laqa֜chat 'et-shshene֧y yelada֛y l֖o la'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, 'Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he worshipped the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.'

וְאִשָּׁ֣ה אַחַ֣ת מִנְּשֵׁ֣י בְנֵֽי־הַ֠נְּבִיאִים צָעֲקָ֨ה אֶל־אֱלִישָׁ֜ע לֵאמֹ֗ר עַבְדְּךָ֤ אִישִׁי֙ מֵ֔ת וְאַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ כִּ֣י עַבְדְּךָ֔ הָיָ֥ה יָרֵ֖א אֶת־יְהוָ֑ה וְהַ֨נֹּשֶׁ֔ה בָּ֗א לָקַ֜חַת אֶת־שְׁנֵ֧י יְלָדַ֛י ל֖וֹ לַעֲבָדִֽים׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ele֤yha 'eliyshsha'֙ ma֣h 'ֽe'eshseh-lּa֔ke hagּi֣ydiy li֔y mah-yּeshsh-lky la֖ke bּabּa֑yit vatּo֗'mer 'e֣yn leshshipechateka֥ kol֙ bּabּa֔yit kּi֖y 'im-'as֥uke shshaֽmen׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha replied to her, 'How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?' 'Your servant has nothing there at all,' she said, 'except a small jar of olive oil.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלֶ֤יהָ אֱלִישָׁע֙ מָ֣ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּ֔ךְ הַגִּ֣ידִי לִ֔י מַה־יֶּשׁ־לכי לָ֖ךְ בַּבָּ֑יִת וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אֵ֣ין לְשִׁפְחָתְךָ֥ כֹל֙ בַּבַּ֔יִת כִּ֖י אִם־אָס֥וּךְ שָֽׁמֶן׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer leki֨y shsha'aliy-la֤ke kּeliym֙ min-hach֔utz me'e֖t kּal-shknky shshekena֑yike kּeli֥ym reqi֖ym 'al-tּame'iֽytiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha said, 'Go around and ask all your neighbours for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few.'

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכִ֨י שַׁאֲלִי־לָ֤ךְ כֵּלִים֙ מִן־הַח֔וּץ מֵאֵ֖ת כָּל־שכנכי שְׁכֵנָ֑יִךְ כֵּלִ֥ים רֵקִ֖ים אַל־תַּמְעִֽיטִי׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba֗'t vesaga֤retּe hadּe֨let֙ bּa'ade֣ke ube'ad-bּana֔yike veyatza֕qetּe 'a֥l kּal-hakּeli֖ym ha'e֑lּeh vehamּale֖ tּasּiֽy'iy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.'

וּבָ֗את וְסָגַ֤רְתְּ הַדֶּ֨לֶת֙ בַּעֲדֵ֣ךְ וּבְעַד־בָּנַ֔יִךְ וְיָצַ֕קְתְּ עַ֥ל כָּל־הַכֵּלִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וְהַמָּלֵ֖א תַּסִּֽיעִי׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֨leke֙ meֽ'itּ֔o vatּisegּo֣r hadּe֔let bּa'ada֖hּ ube'a֣d bּane֑yha he֛m magּishshi֥ym 'ele֖yha vehi֥y mytzqt motzaֽqet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring.

וַתֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ מֵֽאִתּ֔וֹ וַתִּסְגֹּ֣ר הַדֶּ֔לֶת בַּעֲדָ֖הּ וּבְעַ֣ד בָּנֶ֑יהָ הֵ֛ם מַגִּשִׁ֥ים אֵלֶ֖יהָ וְהִ֥יא מיצקת מוֹצָֽקֶת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ kּimelo֣'t hakּeli֗ym vatּo֤'mer 'el-bּenahּ֙ hagּi֨yshshah 'ela֥y 'od֙ kּe֔liy vayּo֣'mer 'ele֔yha 'e֥yn '֖od kּe֑liy vaֽyּa'amo֖d hashshּaֽmen׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When all the jars were full, she said to her son, 'Bring me another one.' But he replied, 'There is not a jar left.' Then the oil stopped flowing.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כִּמְלֹ֣את הַכֵּלִ֗ים וַתֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־בְּנָהּ֙ הַגִּ֨ישָׁה אֵלַ֥י עוֹד֙ כֶּ֔לִי וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֶ֔יהָ אֵ֥ין ע֖וֹד כֶּ֑לִי וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֖ד הַשָּֽׁמֶן׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo֗ vatּagּed֙ le'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֔ym vayּo֗'mer lekiy֙ mikeri֣y 'et-hashshּe֔men veshshalּemi֖y 'et-nshyky nishsheye֑ke ve'a֣tּe bnyky ubana֔yike tiֽcheyi֖y bּanּotaֽr׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)She went and told the man of God, and he said, 'Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.'

וַתָּבֹ֗א וַתַּגֵּד֙ לְאִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לְכִי֙ מִכְרִ֣י אֶת־הַשֶּׁ֔מֶן וְשַׁלְּמִ֖י אֶת־נשיכי נִשְׁיֵ֑ךְ וְאַ֣תְּ בניכי וּבָנַ֔יִךְ תִֽחְיִ֖י בַּנּוֹתָֽר׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֨y hayּ֜om vayּa'abo֧r 'eliyshsha֣ 'el-shshune֗m veshsham֙ 'ishshּa֣h gedola֔h vatּachazeq-bּ֖o le'ekal-la֑chem vaֽyehiy֙ midּe֣y 'aber֔o yasu֥r shsha֖mּah le'ekal-laֽchem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat.

וַיְהִ֨י הַיּ֜וֹם וַיַּעֲבֹ֧ר אֱלִישָׁ֣ע אֶל־שׁוּנֵ֗ם וְשָׁם֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַתַּחֲזֶק־בּ֖וֹ לֶאֱכָל־לָ֑חֶם וַֽיְהִי֙ מִדֵּ֣י עָבְר֔וֹ יָסֻ֥ר שָׁ֖מָּה לֶאֱכָל־לָֽחֶם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'iyshsha֔hּ hinּeh-na֣ yada֔'etּiy kּi֛y 'i֥yshsh 'elohi֖ym qad֣oshsh h֑u 'obe֥r 'ale֖ynu tּamiֽyd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She said to her husband, 'I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God.'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אִישָׁ֔הּ הִנֵּה־נָ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ אֱלֹהִ֖ים קָד֣וֹשׁ ה֑וּא עֹבֵ֥ר עָלֵ֖ינוּ תָּמִֽיד׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): naֽ'ashseh-nּa֤ 'aliyּat-qiyr֙ qetanּa֔h venashsi֨ym l֥o shsha֛m mitּa֥h veshshulecha֖n vekisּe֣ umenora֑h vehaya֛h bּebo'֥o 'ele֖ynu yas֥ur shshaֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Let’s make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us.'

נַֽעֲשֶׂה־נָּ֤א עֲלִיַּת־קִיר֙ קְטַנָּ֔ה וְנָשִׂ֨ים ל֥וֹ שָׁ֛ם מִטָּ֥ה וְשֻׁלְחָ֖ן וְכִסֵּ֣א וּמְנוֹרָ֑ה וְהָיָ֛ה בְּבֹא֥וֹ אֵלֵ֖ינוּ יָס֥וּר שָֽׁמָּה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y hayּ֖om vayּa֣bo shsha֑mּah vayּa֥sar 'el-ha'aliyּa֖h vayּishshekּab-shshaֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there.

וַיְהִ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם וַיָּ֣בֹא שָׁ֑מָּה וַיָּ֥סַר אֶל־הָעֲלִיָּ֖ה וַיִּשְׁכַּב־שָֽׁמָּה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-gּechazi֣y na'ar֔o qera֖ lashshּunamּi֣yt hazּo֑'t vayּiqera'-la֔hּ vaֽtּa'amo֖d lepanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to his servant Gehazi, 'Call the Shunammite.' So he called her, and she stood before him.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־גֵּחֲזִ֣י נַעֲר֔וֹ קְרָ֖א לַשּׁוּנַמִּ֣ית הַזֹּ֑את וַיִּקְרָא־לָ֔הּ וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֖ד לְפָנָֽיו׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer l֗o 'emar-na֣ 'eleyha֮ hinּe֣h chara֣detּe ׀ 'eleynu֮ 'et-kּal-hacharada֣h hazּo't֒ me֚h la'ashs֣ot la֔ke haye֤shsh ledabּer-lake֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke '֖o 'el-shsa֣r hatzּaba֑ vatּo֕'mer bּet֥oke 'amּi֖y 'anoki֥y yoshshaֽbet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha said to him, 'Tell her, "You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?"' She replied, 'I have a home among my own people.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ אֱמָר־נָ֣א אֵלֶיהָ֮ הִנֵּ֣ה חָרַ֣דְתְּ ׀ אֵלֵינוּ֮ אֶת־כָּל־הַחֲרָדָ֣ה הַזֹּאת֒ מֶ֚ה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָ֔ךְ הֲיֵ֤שׁ לְדַבֶּר־לָךְ֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ א֖וֹ אֶל־שַׂ֣ר הַצָּבָ֑א וַתֹּ֕אמֶר בְּת֥וֹךְ עַמִּ֖י אָנֹכִ֥י יֹשָֽׁבֶת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer ume֖h la'ashs֣ot la֑hּ vayּo֣'mer gּeychazi֗y 'aba֛l bּe֥n 'eֽyn-la֖hּ ve'iyshsha֥hּ zaqeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'What can be done for her?' Elisha asked. Gehazi said, 'She has no son, and her husband is old.'

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר וּמֶ֖ה לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת לָ֑הּ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר גֵּיחֲזִ֗י אֲבָ֛ל בֵּ֥ן אֵֽין־לָ֖הּ וְאִישָׁ֥הּ זָקֵֽן׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer qera'-la֑hּ vayּiqera'-la֔hּ vaֽtּa'amo֖d bּapּaֽtach׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elisha said, 'Call her.' So he called her, and she stood in the doorway.

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר קְרָא־לָ֑הּ וַיִּקְרָא־לָ֔הּ וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֖ד בַּפָּֽתַח׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer lamּo'e֤d hazּeh֙ kּa'e֣t chayּa֔h 'ty 'a֖tּe chobe֣qet bּe֑n vatּo֗'mer 'al-'adoniy֙ 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֔ym 'al-tּekazּe֖b bּeshshipechateֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'About this time next year,' Elisha said, 'you will hold a son in your arms.' 'No, my lord!' she objected. 'Please, man of God, don’t mislead your servant!'

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לַמּוֹעֵ֤ד הַזֶּה֙ כָּעֵ֣ת חַיָּ֔ה אתי אַ֖תְּ חֹבֶ֣קֶת בֵּ֑ן וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אַל־אֲדֹנִי֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אַל־תְּכַזֵּ֖ב בְּשִׁפְחָתֶֽךָ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֥har ha'ishshּa֖h vatּe֣led bּe֑n lamּo'e֤d hazּeh֙ kּa'e֣t chayּa֔h 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r 'ele֖yha 'eliyshshaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her.

וַתַּ֥הַר הָאִשָּׁ֖ה וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן לַמּוֹעֵ֤ד הַזֶּה֙ כָּעֵ֣ת חַיָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אֵלֶ֖יהָ אֱלִישָֽׁע׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigedּa֖l hayּa֑led vayehi֣y hayּ֔om vayּetze֥ 'el-'abi֖yv 'el-haqּotzeriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers.

וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל הַיָּ֑לֶד וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם וַיֵּצֵ֥א אֶל־אָבִ֖יו אֶל־הַקֹּצְרִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'el-'abi֖yv ro'shshi֣y ׀ ro'shshi֑y vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-hanּa֔'ar shsa'e֖hu 'el-'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to his father, 'My head! My head!' His father told a servant, 'Carry him to his mother.'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֶל־אָבִ֖יו רֹאשִׁ֣י ׀ רֹאשִׁ֑י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־הַנַּ֔עַר שָׂאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־אִמּֽוֹ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsּa'e֔hu vayebiy'e֖hu 'el-'imּ֑o vayּe֧shsheb 'al-bּirekּe֛yha 'ad-haֽtzּahora֖yim vayּamoֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died.

וַיִּשָּׂאֵ֔הוּ וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־אִמּ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב עַל־בִּרְכֶּ֛יהָ עַד־הַֽצָּהֳרַ֖יִם וַיָּמֹֽת׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֨'al֙ vatּashshekּibe֔hu 'al-mitּa֖t 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֑ym vatּisegּo֥r bּa'ad֖o vatּetzeֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out.

וַתַּ֨עַל֙ וַתַּשְׁכִּבֵ֔הוּ עַל־מִטַּ֖ת אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַתִּסְגֹּ֥ר בַּעֲד֖וֹ וַתֵּצֵֽא׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqera'֮ 'el-'iyshshahּ֒ vatּo֗'mer shshilecha֨h na֥ liy֙ 'echa֣d min-hanּe'ari֔ym ve'acha֖t ha'aton֑ot ve'ar֛utzah 'ad-'i֥yshsh ha'elohi֖ym ve'ashshֽubah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She called her husband and said, 'Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return.'

וַתִּקְרָא֮ אֶל־אִישָׁהּ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר שִׁלְחָ֨ה נָ֥א לִי֙ אֶחָ֣ד מִן־הַנְּעָרִ֔ים וְאַחַ֖ת הָאֲתֹנ֑וֹת וְאָר֛וּצָה עַד־אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים וְאָשֽׁוּבָה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer ma֠dּu'a 'ty 'a֣tּe hlkty hole֤ket 'elayv֙ hayּ֔om loֽ'-cho֖deshsh velo֣ shshabּa֑t vatּo֖'mer shshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Why go to him today?' he asked. 'It’s not the New Moon or the Sabbath.' 'Every thing is all right,' she said.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מַ֠דּוּעַ אתי אַ֣תְּ הלכתי הֹלֶ֤כֶת אֵלָיו֙ הַיּ֔וֹם לֹֽא־חֹ֖דֶשׁ וְלֹ֣א שַׁבָּ֑ת וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שָׁלֽוֹם׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽtּachaboshsh֙ haֽ'at֔on vatּo֥'mer 'eֽl-na'ara֖hּ neha֣g vale֑ke 'al-tּa'atzar-li֣y lirekּo֔b kּi֖y 'im-'ama֥retּiy laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, 'Lead on; don’t slow down for me unless I tell you.'

וַֽתַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ הָֽאָת֔וֹן וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֶֽל־נַעֲרָ֖הּ נְהַ֣ג וָלֵ֑ךְ אַל־תַּעֲצָר־לִ֣י לִרְכֹּ֔ב כִּ֖י אִם־אָמַ֥רְתִּי לָֽךְ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֗leke vatּab֛o 'el-'i֥yshsh ha'elohi֖ym 'el-ha֣r hakּareme֑l va֠yehiy kּire'֨ot 'iyshsh-ha'elohi֤ym 'otahּ֙ minּe֔ged vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-gּeychazi֣y na'ar֔o hinּe֖h hashshּunamּi֥yt halּaֽz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, 'Look! There’s the Shunammite!'

וַתֵּ֗לֶךְ וַתָּב֛וֹא אֶל־אִ֥ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־הַ֣ר הַכַּרְמֶ֑ל וַ֠יְהִי כִּרְא֨וֹת אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים אֹתָהּ֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־גֵּיחֲזִ֣י נַעֲר֔וֹ הִנֵּ֖ה הַשּׁוּנַמִּ֥ית הַלָּֽז׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): atּah֮ rֽutz-na֣ liqera'tahּ֒ ve'emar-la֗hּ hashshal֥om la֛ke hashshal֥om le'iyshshe֖ke hashshal֣om layּa֑led vatּo֖'mer shshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Run to meet her and ask her, "Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?"' 'Everything is all right,' she said.

עַתָּה֮ רֽוּץ־נָ֣א לִקְרָאתָהּ֒ וֶאֱמָר־לָ֗הּ הֲשָׁל֥וֹם לָ֛ךְ הֲשָׁל֥וֹם לְאִישֵׁ֖ךְ הֲשָׁל֣וֹם לַיָּ֑לֶד וַתֹּ֖אמֶר שָׁלֽוֹם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo֞ 'el-'i֤yshsh haֽ'elohiym֙ 'el-haha֔r vaֽtּachaze֖q bּeragela֑yv vayּigּa֨shsh gּeֽychazi֜y lehadepa֗hּ vayּo'mer֩ 'i֨yshsh ha'elohi֤ym harepּeֽh-lahּ֙ kּiֽy-napeshsha֣hּ maֽrah-la֔hּ vaֽyhvah֙ he'eli֣ym mimּe֔nּiy velo֥ higּi֖yd liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, 'Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me why.'

וַתָּבֹ֞א אֶל־אִ֤ישׁ הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־הָהָ֔ר וַֽתַּחֲזֵ֖ק בְּרַגְלָ֑יו וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ גֵּֽיחֲזִ֜י לְהָדְפָ֗הּ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אִ֨ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֤ים הַרְפֵּֽה־לָהּ֙ כִּֽי־נַפְשָׁ֣הּ מָֽרָה־לָ֔הּ וַֽיהוָה֙ הֶעְלִ֣ים מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְלֹ֥א הִגִּ֖יד לִֽי׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֕'mer hashsha'a֥letּiy be֖n me'e֣t 'adoni֑y halo֣ 'ama֔retּiy lo֥ tashshele֖h 'otiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Did I ask you for a son, my lord?' she said. 'Didn’t I tell you, "Don’t raise my hopes"?'

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר הֲשָׁאַ֥לְתִּי בֵ֖ן מֵאֵ֣ת אֲדֹנִ֑י הֲלֹ֣א אָמַ֔רְתִּי לֹ֥א תַשְׁלֶ֖ה אֹתִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer legeychazi֜y chago֣r matene֗yka veqa֨ch mishshe'anetּi֣y beyadeka֮ valeke֒ kּiֽy-timetza֥ 'iyshsh֙ lo֣ tebareke֔nּu vekiֽy-yebarekeka֥ 'i֖yshsh lo֣ ta'anenּ֑u veshsametּa֥ mishshe'anetּi֖y 'al-pּene֥y hanּaֽ'ar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha said to Gehazi, 'Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. If you meet anyone, do not greet them, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy’s face.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לְגֵיחֲזִ֜י חֲגֹ֣ר מָתְנֶ֗יךָ וְקַ֨ח מִשְׁעַנְתִּ֣י בְיָדְךָ֮ וָלֵךְ֒ כִּֽי־תִמְצָ֥א אִישׁ֙ לֹ֣א תְבָרְכֶ֔נּוּ וְכִֽי־יְבָרֶכְךָ֥ אִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א תַעֲנֶנּ֑וּ וְשַׂמְתָּ֥ מִשְׁעַנְתִּ֖י עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַנָּֽעַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'e֣m hanּa֔'ar chay-yehva֥h vecheֽy-napeshsheka֖ 'im-'e'ezebe֑kּa vayּa֖qam vayּe֥leke 'achareֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the child’s mother said, 'As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you.' So he got up and followed her.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֵ֣ם הַנַּ֔עַר חַי־יְהוָ֥ה וְחֵֽי־נַפְשְׁךָ֖ אִם־אֶעֶזְבֶ֑ךָּ וַיָּ֖קָם וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אַחֲרֶֽיהָ׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vegechazi֞y 'aba֣r lipeneyhe֗m vayּa֤shsem 'et-hamּishshe'e֨net֙ 'al-pּene֣y hanּa֔'ar ve'e֥yn q֖ol ve'e֣yn qa֑shsheb vayּa֤shshab liqera'to֙ vayּagּed-l֣o le'mo֔r lo֥ heqi֖ytz hanּaֽ'ar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy’s face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, 'The boy has not awakened.'

וְגֵחֲזִ֞י עָבַ֣ר לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם וַיָּ֤שֶׂם אֶת־הַמִּשְׁעֶ֨נֶת֙ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הַנַּ֔עַר וְאֵ֥ין ק֖וֹל וְאֵ֣ין קָ֑שֶׁב וַיָּ֤שָׁב לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַיַּגֶּד־ל֣וֹ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֥א הֵקִ֖יץ הַנָּֽעַר׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ 'eliyshsha֖ habּa֑yetah vehinּe֤h hanּa֨'ar֙ me֔t mushshekּa֖b 'al-mitּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch.

וַיָּבֹ֥א אֱלִישָׁ֖ע הַבָּ֑יְתָה וְהִנֵּ֤ה הַנַּ֨עַר֙ מֵ֔ת מֻשְׁכָּ֖ב עַל־מִטָּתֽוֹ׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֕ vayּisegּo֥r hadּe֖let bּe'a֣d shsheneyhe֑m vayּitepּalּe֖l 'el-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the LORD.

וַיָּבֹ֕א וַיִּסְגֹּ֥ר הַדֶּ֖לֶת בְּעַ֣ד שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֜'al vayּishshekּa֣b 'al-hayּe֗led vayּashsem֩ pּi֨yv 'al-pּi֜yv ve'eyna֤yv 'al-'eynayv֙ vekapּa֣yv 'al-kpv kּapּa֔yv vayּigeha֖r 'ala֑yv vayּa֖cham bּeshsa֥r hayּaֽled׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he got on the bed and dwelt on the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out on him, the boy’s body grew warm.

וַיַּ֜עַל וַיִּשְׁכַּ֣ב עַל־הַיֶּ֗לֶד וַיָּשֶׂם֩ פִּ֨יו עַל־פִּ֜יו וְעֵינָ֤יו עַל־עֵינָיו֙ וְכַפָּ֣יו עַל־כפו כַּפָּ֔יו וַיִּגְהַ֖ר עָלָ֑יו וַיָּ֖חָם בְּשַׂ֥ר הַיָּֽלֶד׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֜shshab vayּe֣leke bּabּa֗yit 'acha֥t he֨nּah֙ ve'acha֣t he֔nּah vayּa֖'al vayּigeha֣r 'ala֑yv vayezore֤r hanּa֨'ar֙ 'ad-shshe֣ba pּe'ami֔ym vayּipeqa֥ch hanּa֖'ar 'et-'eynaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched himself out on him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.

וַיָּ֜שָׁב וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ בַּבַּ֗יִת אַחַ֥ת הֵ֨נָּה֙ וְאַחַ֣ת הֵ֔נָּה וַיַּ֖עַל וַיִּגְהַ֣ר עָלָ֑יו וַיְזוֹרֵ֤ר הַנַּ֨עַר֙ עַד־שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים וַיִּפְקַ֥ח הַנַּ֖עַר אֶת־עֵינָֽיו׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֣ 'el-gּeychazi֗y vayּo֨'mer֙ qera'֙ 'el-hashshּunamּi֣yt hazּo֔'t vayּiqera'e֖ha vatּab֣o 'ela֑yv vayּo֖'mer shse'i֥y beneֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, 'Call the Shunammite.' And he did. When she came, he said, 'Take your son.'

וַיִּקְרָ֣א אֶל־גֵּיחֲזִ֗י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ קְרָא֙ אֶל־הַשֻּׁנַמִּ֣ית הַזֹּ֔את וַיִּקְרָאֶ֖הָ וַתָּב֣וֹא אֵלָ֑יו וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שְׂאִ֥י בְנֵֽךְ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo'֙ vatּipּo֣l 'al-ragela֔yv vatּishshetּa֖chu 'a֑retzah vatּishsּa֥ 'et-bּena֖hּ vatּetzeֽ'׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out.

וַתָּבֹא֙ וַתִּפֹּ֣ל עַל־רַגְלָ֔יו וַתִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ אָ֑רְצָה וַתִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־בְּנָ֖הּ וַתֵּצֵֽא׃פ

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'eliyshsha֞ shsha֤b hagּilegּa֨lah֙ vehara'a֣b bּa'a֔retz ubeney֙ hanּebiy'i֔ym yoshshebi֖ym lepana֑yv vayּo֣'mer lena'ar֗o shshepot֙ hasּi֣yr hagּedola֔h ubashshּe֥l nazi֖yd libene֥y hanּebiy'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha returned to Gilgal and there was a famine in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, 'Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these prophets.'

וֶאֱלִישָׁ֞ע שָׁ֤ב הַגִּלְגָּ֨לָה֙ וְהָרָעָ֣ב בָּאָ֔רֶץ וּבְנֵי֙ הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים יֹשְׁבִ֖ים לְפָנָ֑יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְנַעֲר֗וֹ שְׁפֹת֙ הַסִּ֣יר הַגְּדוֹלָ֔ה וּבַשֵּׁ֥ל נָזִ֖יד לִבְנֵ֥י הַנְּבִיאִֽים׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֨ 'echa֣d 'el-hashsּadeh֮ lelaqּe֣t 'orot֒ vayּimetza'֙ gּe֣pen shsade֔h vayelaqּe֥t mimּe֛nּu pּaqּu'o֥t shsade֖h melo֣ biged֑o vayּabo֗ vayepalּa֛ch 'el-si֥yr hanּazi֖yd kּiֽy-lo֥ yadaֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine and picked as many of its gourds as his garment could hold. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were.

וַיֵּצֵ֨א אֶחָ֣ד אֶל־הַשָּׂדֶה֮ לְלַקֵּ֣ט אֹרֹת֒ וַיִּמְצָא֙ גֶּ֣פֶן שָׂדֶ֔ה וַיְלַקֵּ֥ט מִמֶּ֛נּוּ פַּקֻּעֹ֥ת שָׂדֶ֖ה מְלֹ֣א בִגְד֑וֹ וַיָּבֹ֗א וַיְפַלַּ֛ח אֶל־סִ֥יר הַנָּזִ֖יד כִּֽי־לֹ֥א יָדָֽעוּ׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽtzeq֥u la'anashshi֖ym le'ek֑ol va֠yehiy kּe'akela֨m mehanּazi֜yd vehe֣mּah tza'a֗qu vayּoֽ'meru֙ ma֤vet bּasּiyr֙ 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֔ym velo֥ yakel֖u le'ekoֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, 'Man of God, there is death in the pot!' And they could not eat it.

וַיִּֽצְק֥וּ לַאֲנָשִׁ֖ים לֶאֱכ֑וֹל וַ֠יְהִי כְּאָכְלָ֨ם מֵהַנָּזִ֜יד וְהֵ֣מָּה צָעָ֗קוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ מָ֤וֶת בַּסִּיר֙ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יָכְל֖וּ לֶאֱכֹֽל׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ uqechu-qe֔mach vayּashshele֖ke 'el-hasּi֑yr vayּo֗'mer tza֤q la'am֙ veyo'ke֔lu velo֥ haya֛h dּaba֥r ra֖ bּasּiֽyr׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Elisha said, 'Get some flour.' He threw it into the pot and said, 'Serve it to the people to eat.' And there was nothing harmful in the pot.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ וּקְחוּ־קֶ֔מַח וַיַּשְׁלֵ֖ךְ אֶל־הַסִּ֑יר וַיֹּ֗אמֶר צַ֤ק לָעָם֙ וְיֹאכֵ֔לוּ וְלֹ֥א הָיָ֛ה דָּבָ֥ר רָ֖ע בַּסִּֽיר׃ס

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh bּa֜ mibּa֣'al shshali֗shshah vayּabe'֩ le'i֨yshsh ha'elohi֜ym le֤chem bּikּuriym֙ 'eshseriֽym-le֣chem shse'ori֔ym vekareme֖l bּetziqelon֑o vayּo֕'mer tּe֥n la'a֖m veyo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first grain, along with some heads of new grain. 'Give it to the people to eat,' Elisha said.

וְאִ֨ישׁ בָּ֜א מִבַּ֣עַל שָׁלִ֗שָׁה וַיָּבֵא֩ לְאִ֨ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים לֶ֤חֶם בִּכּוּרִים֙ עֶשְׂרִֽים־לֶ֣חֶם שְׂעֹרִ֔ים וְכַרְמֶ֖ל בְּצִקְלֹנ֑וֹ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר תֵּ֥ן לָעָ֖ם וְיֹאכֵֽלוּ׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ meshsha֣ret֔o ma֚h 'etּe֣n ze֔h lipene֖y me֣'ah 'i֑yshsh vayּo֗'mer tּe֤n la'am֙ veyo'ke֔lu kּi֣y ko֥h 'ama֛r yehva֖h 'ako֥l vehoteֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'How can I set this before a hundred men?' his servant asked. But Elisha answered, 'Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: "They will eat and have some left over."'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ מְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ מָ֚ה אֶתֵּ֣ן זֶ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י מֵ֣אָה אִ֑ישׁ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר תֵּ֤ן לָעָם֙ וְיֹאכֵ֔לוּ כִּ֣י כֹ֥ה אָמַ֛ר יְהוָ֖ה אָכֹ֥ל וְהוֹתֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֧n lipeneyhe֛m vayּo'kel֥u vayּoti֖ru kּideba֥r yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD.

וַיִּתֵּ֧ן לִפְנֵיהֶ֛ם וַיֹּאכְל֥וּ וַיּוֹתִ֖רוּ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃פ
