Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֖da yo'a֣b bּen-tzeruya֑h kּiֽy-le֥b hamּe֖leke 'al-'abeshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab son of Zeruiah realised that the king’s heart longed for Absalom.

וַיֵּ֖דַע יוֹאָ֣ב בֶּן־צְרֻיָ֑ה כִּֽי־לֵ֥ב הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַל־אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch yo'ab֙ tּeq֔o'ah vayּiqּa֥ch mishshּa֖m 'ishshּa֣h chakama֑h vayּo֣'mer 'e֠leyha hiֽte'abּeliy-na֞ velibeshshiy-na֣ bigedey-'e֗bel ve'al-tּas֨ukiy֙ shshe֔men vehayi֕yt kּe'ishshּa֗h ze֚h yami֣ym rabּi֔ym mite'abּe֖let 'al-meֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there. He said to her, 'Pretend to be in mourning. Dress in mourning clothes, and don't use any scented lotions. Act like a woman who has spent a long time grieving for the dead.'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח יוֹאָב֙ תְּק֔וֹעָה וַיִּקַּ֥ח מִשָּׁ֖ם אִשָּׁ֣ה חֲכָמָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵ֠לֶיהָ הִֽתְאַבְּלִי־נָ֞א וְלִבְשִׁי־נָ֣א בִגְדֵי־אֵ֗בֶל וְאַל־תָּס֨וּכִי֙ שֶׁ֔מֶן וְהָיִ֕ית כְּאִשָּׁ֗ה זֶ֚ה יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים מִתְאַבֶּ֖לֶת עַל־מֵֽת׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba't֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke vedibּa֥retּe 'ela֖yv kּadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vayּa֧shsem yo'a֛b 'et-hadּebari֖ym bּepiֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Then go to the king and speak these words to him.' And Joab put the words in her mouth.

וּבָאת֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְדִבַּ֥רְתְּ אֵלָ֖יו כַּדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיָּ֧שֶׂם יוֹאָ֛ב אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים בְּפִֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠tּo'mer ha'ishshּa֤h hatּeqo'iyt֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke vatּipּo֧l 'al-'apּe֛yha 'a֖retzah vatּishshetּa֑chu vatּo֖'mer hoshshi֥'ah hamּeֽleke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When the woman from Tekoa went to the king, she fell prostrate before him to show him honour and said, 'Help me, O king!'

וַ֠תֹּאמֶר הָאִשָּׁ֤ה הַתְּקֹעִית֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתִּפֹּ֧ל עַל־אַפֶּ֛יהָ אַ֖רְצָה וַתִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר הוֹשִׁ֥עָה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'mer-la֥hּ hamּe֖leke mah-lּa֑ke vatּo֗'mer 'aba֛l 'ishshּaֽh-'alemana֥h 'a֖niy vayּa֥mat 'iyshshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king asked her, 'What is the matter?' She answered, 'I am a widow; my husband is dead.'

וַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֥הּ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מַה־לָּ֑ךְ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר אֲבָ֛ל אִשָּֽׁה־אַלְמָנָ֥ה אָ֖נִי וַיָּ֥מָת אִישִֽׁי׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): uleshshipechaֽteka֙ shshene֣y bani֔ym vayּinּatz֤u shsheneyhem֙ bּashsּade֔h ve'e֥yn matzּi֖yl bּeֽyneyhe֑m vayּakּ֧o ha'echa֛d 'et-ha'echa֖d vayּa֥met 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Your servant had two sons. They got into a fight with each other in the field, and no one was there to separate them. One struck the other and killed him.'

וּלְשִׁפְחָֽתְךָ֙ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים וַיִּנָּצ֤וּ שְׁנֵיהֶם֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וְאֵ֥ין מַצִּ֖יל בֵּֽינֵיהֶ֑ם וַיַּכּ֧וֹ הָאֶחָ֛ד אֶת־הָאֶחָ֖ד וַיָּ֥מֶת אֹתֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּeh֩ qa֨mah kaֽl-hamּishshepּacha֜h 'al-shshipechate֗ka vayּoֽ'meru֙ tּeni֣y ׀ 'et-makּe֣h 'achi֗yv unemite֨hu֙ bּene֤peshsh 'achiyv֙ 'ashshe֣r hara֔g venashshemi֖ydah gּa֣m 'et-hayּore֑shsh vekibּ֗u 'et-gּaֽchaletּiy֙ 'ashshe֣r nishshe'a֔rah lebiletּi֧y shvm shsiym-le'iyshshi֛y shshe֥m ushshe'eri֖yt 'al-pּene֥y ha'adamaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now the whole clan has risen up against your servant. They say, "Hand over the one who struck his brother, so that we may put him to death for the life of the brother he killed; then we will get rid of the heir as well." They would quench my only remaining ember and leave my husband without a name or a descendant on the face of the earth.'

וְהִנֵּה֩ קָ֨מָה כָֽל־הַמִּשְׁפָּחָ֜ה עַל־שִׁפְחָתֶ֗ךָ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ תְּנִ֣י ׀ אֶת־מַכֵּ֣ה אָחִ֗יו וּנְמִתֵ֨הוּ֙ בְּנֶ֤פֶשׁ אָחִיו֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָרָ֔ג וְנַשְׁמִ֖ידָה גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַיּוֹרֵ֑שׁ וְכִבּ֗וּ אֶת־גַּֽחַלְתִּי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁאָ֔רָה לְבִלְתִּ֧י שום שִׂים־לְאִישִׁ֛י שֵׁ֥ם וּשְׁאֵרִ֖ית עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer hamּe֛leke 'el-ha'ishshּa֖h leki֣y lebeyte֑ke va'ani֖y 'atzaue֥h 'alaֽyike׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king said to the woman, 'Go home, and I will issue an order on your behalf.'

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה לְכִ֣י לְבֵיתֵ֑ךְ וַאֲנִ֖י אֲצַוֶּ֥ה עָלָֽיִךְ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֜'mer ha'ishshּa֤h hatּeqo'iyt֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke 'ala֞y 'adoni֥y hamּe֛leke he'avo֖n ve'al-bּe֣yt 'abi֑y vehamּe֥leke vekise'֖o naqiֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But the woman from Tekoa said to him, 'My lord the king, let the guilt rest on me and on my father’s family, and let the king and his throne be innocent.'

וַתֹּ֜אמֶר הָאִשָּׁ֤ה הַתְּקוֹעִית֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עָלַ֞י אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ הֶעָוֺ֖ן וְעַל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑י וְהַמֶּ֥לֶךְ וְכִסְא֖וֹ נָקִֽי׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer hamּe֑leke haֽmedabּe֤r 'ela֨yike֙ vaֽhabe't֣o 'ela֔y veloֽ'-yosi֥yp '֖od laga֥'at bּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king replied, 'If anyone says anything to you, bring him to me, and he will not bother you again.'

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ הַֽמְדַבֵּ֤ר אֵלַ֨יִךְ֙ וַֽהֲבֵאת֣וֹ אֵלַ֔י וְלֹֽא־יֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד לָגַ֥עַת בָּֽךְ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo'mer֩ yizekּar-na֨ hamּe֜leke 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֗yka mhrbyt meharebּa֞t gּo'e֤l hadּam֙ leshshache֔t velo֥ yashshemi֖ydu 'et-bּeni֑y vayּo֨'mer֙ chay-yehva֔h 'im-yipּo֛l mishsּa'ara֥t bּene֖ke 'aֽretzah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She said, 'Then let the king invoke the LORD his God to prevent the avenger of blood from adding to the destruction, so that my son will not be killed.' 'As surely as the LORD lives,' he said, 'not a hair of your son’s head will fall to the ground.'

וַתֹּאמֶר֩ יִזְכָּר־נָ֨א הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ מהרבית מֵהַרְבַּ֞ת גֹּאֵ֤ל הַדָּם֙ לְשַׁחֵ֔ת וְלֹ֥א יַשְׁמִ֖ידוּ אֶת־בְּנִ֑י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ חַי־יְהוָ֔ה אִם־יִפֹּ֛ל מִשַּׂעֲרַ֥ת בְּנֵ֖ךְ אָֽרְצָה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ haֽ'ishshּa֔h tּedabּer-na֧ shshipechateka֛ 'el-'adoni֥y hamּe֖leke dּaba֑r vayּo֖'mer dּabּeֽriy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the woman said, 'Let your servant speak a word to my lord the king.' 'Speak,' he replied.

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה תְּדַבֶּר־נָ֧א שִׁפְחָתְךָ֛ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ דָּבָ֑ר וַיֹּ֖אמֶר דַּבֵּֽרִי׃ס

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ haֽ'ishshּa֔h vela֧mּah chashsha֛betּah kּazo֖'t 'al-'a֣m 'elohi֑ym umidּabּe֨r hamּe֜leke hadּaba֤r hazּeh֙ kּe'ashshe֔m lebiletּi֛y hashshi֥yb hamּe֖leke 'eֽt-nidּechֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman said, 'Why then have you devised such a thing against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not convict himself, for the king has not brought back his banished son?'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה וְלָ֧מָּה חָשַׁ֛בְתָּה כָּזֹ֖את עַל־עַ֣ם אֱלֹהִ֑ים וּמִדַּבֵּ֨ר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ הַדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ כְּאָשֵׁ֔ם לְבִלְתִּ֛י הָשִׁ֥יב הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶֽת־נִדְּחֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy-m֣ot nam֔ut vekamּa֨yim֙ hanּigּari֣ym 'a֔retzah 'ashshe֖r lo֣ ye'ase֑pu veloֽ'-yishsּa֤ 'elohiym֙ ne֔peshsh vechashshab֙ maֽchashshab֔ot lebiletּi֛y yidּa֥ch mimּe֖nּu nidּaֽch׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be recovered, so we must die. But God does not take away life; instead, he devises ways so that a banished person may not remain estranged from him.'

כִּי־מ֣וֹת נָמ֔וּת וְכַמַּ֨יִם֙ הַנִּגָּרִ֣ים אַ֔רְצָה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לֹ֣א יֵאָסֵ֑פוּ וְלֹֽא־יִשָּׂ֤א אֱלֹהִים֙ נֶ֔פֶשׁ וְחָשַׁב֙ מַֽחֲשָׁב֔וֹת לְבִלְתִּ֛י יִדַּ֥ח מִמֶּ֖נּוּ נִדָּֽח׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠'atּah 'ashsher-bּa֜'tiy ledabּe֨r 'el-hamּe֤leke 'adoniy֙ 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֔h kּi֥y yeֽre'u֖niy ha'a֑m vatּo֤'mer shshipechaֽteka֙ 'adabּerah-nּa֣ 'el-hamּe֔leke 'ula֛y ya'ashse֥h hamּe֖leke 'et-dּeba֥r 'amatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'And now I have come to say this to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, "I will speak to the king; perhaps he will do what his servant asks."'

וְ֠עַתָּה אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֜אתִי לְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ אֲדֹנִי֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה כִּ֥י יֵֽרְאֻ֖נִי הָעָ֑ם וַתֹּ֤אמֶר שִׁפְחָֽתְךָ֙ אֲדַבְּרָה־נָּ֣א אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אוּלַ֛י יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־דְּבַ֥ר אֲמָתֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y yishshema֣ hamּe֔leke lehatzּi֥yl 'et-'amat֖o mikּa֣p ha'i֑yshsh lehashshemi֨yd 'oti֤y ve'et-bּeniy֙ ya֔chad miֽnּachala֖t 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'"Perhaps the king will agree to deliver his servant from the hand of the man who is trying to cut off both me and my son from the inheritance God gave us."'

כִּ֚י יִשְׁמַ֣ע הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְהַצִּ֥יל אֶת־אֲמָת֖וֹ מִכַּ֣ף הָאִ֑ישׁ לְהַשְׁמִ֨יד אֹתִ֤י וְאֶת־בְּנִי֙ יַ֔חַד מִֽנַּחֲלַ֖ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ shshipecha֣teka֔ yiֽheyeh-nּa֛ dּebar-'adoni֥y hamּe֖leke limenucha֑h kּi֣y ׀ kּemale'a֣ke ha'elohi֗ym kּe֣n 'adoni֤y hamּe֨leke֙ lishshemo֨'a֙ hatּ֣ob vehara֔ vaֽyhva֥h 'elohe֖yka yehi֥y 'imּaֽke׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'And now your servant says, "May the word of my lord the king bring me rest, for my lord the king is like an angel of God in discerning good and evil. May the LORD your God be with you."'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ שִׁפְחָ֣תְךָ֔ יִֽהְיֶה־נָּ֛א דְּבַר־אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לִמְנוּחָ֑ה כִּ֣י ׀ כְּמַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים כֵּ֣ן אֲדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ לִשְׁמֹ֨עַ֙ הַטּ֣וֹב וְהָרָ֔ע וַֽיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ יְהִ֥י עִמָּֽךְ׃פ

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'an hamּe֗leke vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-ha֣'ishshּa֔h 'al-na֨ tekachadi֤y mimּe֨nּiy֙ dּaba֔r 'ashshe֥r 'anoki֖y shsho'e֣l 'ota֑ke vatּo֨'mer֙ haֽ'ishshּa֔h yedabּer-na֖ 'adoni֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king said to the woman, 'Do not hide from me the answer to what I am about to ask you.' 'Let my lord the king speak,' the woman said.

וַיַּ֣עַן הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה אַל־נָ֨א תְכַחֲדִ֤י מִמֶּ֨נִּי֙ דָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָנֹכִ֖י שֹׁאֵ֣ל אֹתָ֑ךְ וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה יְדַבֶּר־נָ֖א אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֔leke haya֥d yo'a֛b 'itּa֖ke bּekal-zo֑'t vatּa֣'an ha'ishshּa֣h vatּo֡'mer cheֽy-napeshsheka֩ 'adoni֨y hamּe֜leke 'im-'i֣shsh ׀ lehemi֣yn ulehashsemi֗yl mikּo֤l 'ashsher-dּibּer֙ 'adoni֣y hamּe֔leke kּiֽy-'abedּeka֤ yo'ab֙ h֣u tziua֔niy veh֗u shsa֚m bּepi֣y shshipechaֽteka֔ 'e֥t kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king asked, 'Is the hand of Joab with you in all this?' The woman answered, 'As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything my lord the king says. Yes, it was your servant Joab who instructed me to do this and who put all these words into the mouth of your servant.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הֲיַ֥ד יוֹאָ֛ב אִתָּ֖ךְ בְּכָל־זֹ֑את וַתַּ֣עַן הָאִשָּׁ֣ה וַתֹּ֡אמֶר חֵֽי־נַפְשְׁךָ֩ אֲדֹנִ֨י הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אִם־אִ֣שׁ ׀ לְהֵמִ֣ין וּלְהַשְׂמִ֗יל מִכֹּ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּר֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כִּֽי־עַבְדְּךָ֤ יוֹאָב֙ ה֣וּא צִוָּ֔נִי וְה֗וּא שָׂ֚ם בְּפִ֣י שִׁפְחָֽתְךָ֔ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): leba'ab֤ur sabּeb֙ 'et-pּene֣y hadּaba֔r 'ashsa֛h 'abedּeka֥ yo'a֖b 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֑h va'doni֣y chaka֗m kּechakemat֙ male'a֣ke ha'elohi֔ym lada֖'at 'eֽt-kּal-'ashshe֥r bּa'aֽretz׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)'Your servant Joab did this to change the present situation. My lord has wisdom like that of an angel of God, he knows everything that happens in the land.'

לְבַעֲב֤וּר סַבֵּב֙ אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י הַדָּבָ֔ר עָשָׂ֛ה עַבְדְּךָ֥ יוֹאָ֖ב אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַאדֹנִ֣י חָכָ֗ם כְּחָכְמַת֙ מַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים לָדַ֖עַת אֶֽת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ס

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer hamּe֨leke֙ 'el-yo'a֔b hinּeh-na֥ 'ashsi֖ytiy 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vele֛ke hashshe֥b 'et-hanּa֖'ar 'et-'abeshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king said to Joab, 'Very well, I will do it. Go, bring back the young man Absalom.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֶל־יוֹאָ֔ב הִנֵּה־נָ֥א עָשִׂ֖יתִי אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְלֵ֛ךְ הָשֵׁ֥ב אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר אֶת־אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּol֩ yo'a֨b 'el-pּana֥yv 'a֛retzah vayּishshetּa֖chu vayeba֣reke 'et-hamּe֑leke vayּo֣'mer yo'a֡b hayּom֩ yada֨ 'abedּeka֜ kּiy-matza֨'tiy che֤n bּe'eyne֨yka֙ 'adoni֣y hamּe֔leke 'ashsher-'ashsa֥h hamּe֖leke 'et-dּeba֥r 'bdv 'abedּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab fell prostrate before the king to show him honour and blessed him. Joab said, 'Today your servant knows that I have found favour in your sight, my lord the king, because the king has granted his servant’s request.'

וַיִּפֹּל֩ יוֹאָ֨ב אֶל־פָּנָ֥יו אַ֛רְצָה וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יוֹאָ֡ב הַיּוֹם֩ יָדַ֨ע עַבְדְּךָ֜ כִּי־מָצָ֨אתִי חֵ֤ן בְּעֵינֶ֨יךָ֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־דְּבַ֥ר עבדו עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥qam yo'a֖b vayּe֣leke gּeshsh֑urah vayּabe֥ 'et-'abeshshal֖om yerushshalaiֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joab went to Geshur and brought Absalom back to Jerusalem.

וַיָּ֥קָם יוֹאָ֖ב וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ גְּשׁ֑וּרָה וַיָּבֵ֥א אֶת־אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃פ

Edified Edition (EDE)But the king said, 'He must go to his own house; he must not see my face.' So Absalom went to his own house and did not see the face of the king.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ יִסֹּ֣ב אֶל־בֵּית֔וֹ וּפָנַ֖י לֹ֣א יִרְאֶ֑ה וַיִּסֹּ֤ב אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֶל־בֵּית֔וֹ וּפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֹ֥א רָאָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): uke'abeshshal֗om lo'-haya֧h 'iyshsh-yape֛h bּekal-yishsera'e֖l lehalּe֣l me'o֑d mikּa֤p ragelo֙ ve'a֣d qadeqod֔o lo'-ha֥yah b֖o mֽum׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In all Israel there was not a man so highly praised for his handsome appearance as Absalom. From the sole of his foot to the top of his head there was no blemish in him.

וּכְאַבְשָׁל֗וֹם לֹא־הָיָ֧ה אִישׁ־יָפֶ֛ה בְּכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַלֵּ֣ל מְאֹ֑ד מִכַּ֤ף רַגְלוֹ֙ וְעַ֣ד קָדְקֳד֔וֹ לֹא־הָ֥יָה ב֖וֹ מֽוּם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uֽbegalּecho֮ 'et-ro'shsho֒ veֽ֠hayah miqּe֨tz yami֤ym ׀ layּamiym֙ 'ashshe֣r yegalּe֔cha kּiֽy-kabe֥d 'ala֖yv vegilּech֑o veshshaqal֙ 'et-shse'a֣r ro'shsh֔o ma'ta֥yim shsheqali֖ym bּe'e֥ben hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whenever he cut the hair of his head, he used to cut it once a year because it became too heavy for him, he would weigh it, and its weight was two hundred shekels by the royal standard.

וּֽבְגַלְּחוֹ֮ אֶת־רֹאשׁוֹ֒ וְֽ֠הָיָה מִקֵּ֨ץ יָמִ֤ים ׀ לַיָּמִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְגַלֵּ֔חַ כִּֽי־כָבֵ֥ד עָלָ֖יו וְגִלְּח֑וֹ וְשָׁקַל֙ אֶת־שְׂעַ֣ר רֹאשׁ֔וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם שְׁקָלִ֖ים בְּאֶ֥בֶן הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽualed֤u le'abeshshalom֙ shsheloshsha֣h bani֔ym uba֥t 'acha֖t ushshema֣hּ tּama֑r hi֣y hayeta֔h 'ishshּa֖h yepa֥t mare'eֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Three sons and one daughter were born to Absalom. The daughter’s name was Tamar, and she became a beautiful woman.

וַיִּֽוָּלְד֤וּ לְאַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ שְׁלוֹשָׁ֣ה בָנִ֔ים וּבַ֥ת אַחַ֖ת וּשְׁמָ֣הּ תָּמָ֑ר הִ֣יא הָיְתָ֔ה אִשָּׁ֖ה יְפַ֥ת מַרְאֶֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧shsheb 'abeshshal֛om bּiyrushshala֖im shshenata֣yim yami֑ym upene֥y hamּe֖leke lo֥ ra'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two full years without seeing the king’s face.

וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב אַבְשָׁל֛וֹם בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם שְׁנָתַ֣יִם יָמִ֑ים וּפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לֹ֥א רָאָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch 'abeshshal֜om 'el-yo'a֗b lishshelo֤cha 'oto֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke velo֥ 'aba֖h lab֣o 'ela֑yv vayּishshela֥ch 'od֙ shsheni֔yt velo֥ 'aba֖h labֽo'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Absalom sent for Joab in order to send him to the king, but Joab refused to come to him. So he sent a second time, but he still refused to come.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח אַבְשָׁל֜וֹם אֶל־יוֹאָ֗ב לִשְׁלֹ֤חַ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לָב֣וֹא אֵלָ֑יו וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח עוֹד֙ שֵׁנִ֔ית וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לָבֽוֹא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'el-'abada֜yv re'u֩ cheleqa֨t yo'a֤b 'el-yadiy֙ velo-shsha֣m shse'ori֔ym lek֖u vhvtztyh vehatzּiyt֣uha ba'e֑shsh vayּatzּi֜tu 'abede֧y 'abeshshal֛om 'et-hacheleqa֖h bּa'eֽshsh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said to his servants, 'Look, Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire.' So Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֶל־עֲבָדָ֜יו רְאוּ֩ חֶלְקַ֨ת יוֹאָ֤ב אֶל־יָדִי֙ וְלוֹ־שָׁ֣ם שְׂעֹרִ֔ים לְכ֖וּ והוצתיה וְהַצִּית֣וּהָ בָאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּצִּ֜תוּ עַבְדֵ֧י אַבְשָׁל֛וֹם אֶת־הַחֶלְקָ֖ה בָּאֵֽשׁ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam yo'a֔b vayּabo֥ 'el-'abeshshal֖om habּa֑yetah vayּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv la֣mּah hitzּi֧ytu 'abade֛ka 'et-hacheleqa֥h 'ashsher-li֖y bּa'eֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joab did go to Absalom’s house and said to him, 'Why have your servants set my field on fire?'

וַיָּ֣קָם יוֹאָ֔ב וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו לָ֣מָּה הִצִּ֧יתוּ עֲבָדֶ֛ךָ אֶת־הַחֶלְקָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־לִ֖י בָּאֵֽשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'abeshshal֣om 'el-yo'a֡b hinּe֣h shshala֣chetּiy 'ele֣yka ׀ le'mo֡r bּo֣ he֠nּah ve'eshshelechah֩ 'oteka֨ 'el-hamּe֜leke le'mo֗r la֤mּah bּa֨'tiy֙ migּeshsh֔ur t֥ob li֖y 'o֣d 'aniy-shsha֑m ve'atּa֗h 'ere'eh֙ pּene֣y hamּe֔leke ve'im-yeshsh-bּi֥y 'avo֖n vehemitaֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom said to Joab, 'Look, I sent word to you and said, "Come here so I can send you to the king to ask, 'Why have I come from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there!'" Now then, I want to see the king’s face, and if I am guilty of anything, let him put me to death.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְשָׁל֣וֹם אֶל־יוֹאָ֡ב הִנֵּ֣ה שָׁלַ֣חְתִּי אֵלֶ֣יךָ ׀ לֵאמֹ֡ר בֹּ֣א הֵ֠נָּה וְאֶשְׁלְחָה֩ אֹתְךָ֨ אֶל־הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֗ר לָ֤מָּה בָּ֨אתִי֙ מִגְּשׁ֔וּר ט֥וֹב לִ֖י עֹ֣ד אֲנִי־שָׁ֑ם וְעַתָּ֗ה אֶרְאֶה֙ פְּנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאִם־יֶשׁ־בִּ֥י עָוֺ֖ן וֶהֱמִתָֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ yo'a֣b 'el-hamּeleke֮ vayּagּed-lo֒ vayּiqera֤ 'el-'abeshshalom֙ vayּabo֣ 'el-hamּe֔leke vayּishshetּa֨chu l֧o 'al-'apּa֛yv 'a֖retzah lipene֣y hamּe֑leke vayּishshּa֥q hamּe֖leke le'abeshshalֽom׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So Joab went to the king and told him this. Then the king summoned Absalom, and he came in and bowed down with his face to the ground before the king. And the king kissed Absalom.

וַיָּבֹ֨א יוֹאָ֣ב אֶל־הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ וַיַּגֶּד־לוֹ֒ וַיִּקְרָ֤א אֶל־אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ וַיָּבֹ֣א אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֨חוּ ל֧וֹ עַל־אַפָּ֛יו אַ֖רְצָה לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיִּשַּׁ֥ק הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לְאַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃פ
