Chapter 16
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֗d 'aba֤r me'at֙ meֽharo֔'shsh vehinּe֥h tziyba֛ na֥'ar mepiy-bo֖shshet liqera't֑o vetze֨med chamori֜ym chabushshi֗ym va'aleyhem֩ ma'ta֨yim le֜chem ume'a֧h tzimּuqi֛ym ume֥'ah qa֖yitz vene֥bel yaֽyin׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When David had gone a short distance beyond the summit, there was Ziba, the steward of MephiboshES, waiting to meet him. He had a couple of saddled donkeys laden with two hundred loaves of bread, a hundred cakes of raisins, a hundred cakes of summer fruit and a skin of wine.

וְדָוִ֗ד עָבַ֤ר מְעַט֙ מֵֽהָרֹ֔אשׁ וְהִנֵּ֥ה צִיבָ֛א נַ֥עַר מְפִי־בֹ֖שֶׁת לִקְרָאת֑וֹ וְצֶ֨מֶד חֲמֹרִ֜ים חֲבֻשִׁ֗ים וַעֲלֵיהֶם֩ מָאתַ֨יִם לֶ֜חֶם וּמֵאָ֧ה צִמּוּקִ֛ים וּמֵ֥אָה קַ֖יִץ וְנֵ֥בֶל יָֽיִן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer hamּe֛leke 'el-tziyba֖ mah-'e֣lּeh lּa֑ke vayּo֣'mer tzi֠yba hachamori֨ym lebeyt-hamּe֜leke lirekּo֗b vlhlchm vehalּe֤chem vehaqּa֨yitz֙ le'ek֣ol hanּe'ari֔ym vehayּa֕yin lishshetּ֥ot hayּa'e֖p bּamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king asked Ziba, 'Why have you brought these?' Ziba answered, 'The donkeys are for the king’s household to ride on, the bread and fruit are for the men to eat, and the wine is to refresh those who become exhausted in the wilderness.'

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־צִיבָ֖א מָה־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֑ךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר צִ֠יבָא הַחֲמוֹרִ֨ים לְבֵית־הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לִרְכֹּ֗ב ולהלחם וְהַלֶּ֤חֶם וְהַקַּ֨יִץ֙ לֶאֱכ֣וֹל הַנְּעָרִ֔ים וְהַיַּ֕יִן לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת הַיָּעֵ֖ף בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֔leke ve'ayּe֖h bּen-'adone֑yka vayּo֨'mer tziyba֜ 'el-hamּe֗leke hinּeh֙ yoshshe֣b bּiyrushshalai֔m kּi֣y 'ama֔r hayּ֗om yashshi֤ybu liy֙ bּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l 'e֖t mamelek֥ut 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king then asked, 'And where is your master’s grandson?' Ziba said to him, 'He is staying in Jerusalem, because he thinks, "Today the house of Israel will give me back my grandfather’s kingdom."'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְאַיֵּ֖ה בֶּן־אֲדֹנֶ֑יךָ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר צִיבָ֜א אֶל־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ הִנֵּה֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר הַיּ֗וֹם יָשִׁ֤יבוּ לִי֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת מַמְלְכ֥וּת אָבִֽי׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer hamּe֨leke֙ letziba֔ hinּe֣h leka֔ kּo֖l 'ashshe֣r limepiy-bo֑shshet vayּo֤'mer tziyba'֙ hiֽshshetּachave֔ytiy 'emetza'-che֥n bּe'eyne֖yka 'adoni֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king said to Ziba, 'All that belonged to MephiboshES is now yours.' 'I humbly bow before you,' Ziba said. 'May I continue to find favour in your eyes, my lord the king.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ לְצִבָ֔א הִנֵּ֣ה לְךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִמְפִי־בֹ֑שֶׁת וַיֹּ֤אמֶר צִיבָא֙ הִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֵ֔יתִי אֶמְצָא־חֵ֥ן בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba֛ hamּe֥leke dּavi֖d 'ad-bּaֽchuri֑ym vehinּe֣h mishshּam֩ 'i֨yshsh yotze֜ mimּishshepּa֣chat bּeyt-shsha'֗ul ushshemo֙ shshime'i֣y ben-gּera֔ yotze֥ yatz֖o umeqalּeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As King David approached Bahurim, a man from the same clan as Saul’s family came out from there. His name was Shimei son of Gera, and he cursed as he came out.

וּבָ֛א הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִ֖ד עַד־בַּֽחוּרִ֑ים וְהִנֵּ֣ה מִשָּׁם֩ אִ֨ישׁ יוֹצֵ֜א מִמִּשְׁפַּ֣חַת בֵּית־שָׁא֗וּל וּשְׁמוֹ֙ שִׁמְעִ֣י בֶן־גֵּרָ֔א יֹצֵ֥א יָצ֖וֹא וּמְקַלֵּֽל׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayesaqּe֤l bּaֽ'abaniym֙ 'et-dּavi֔d ve'et-kּal-'abede֖y hamּe֣leke dּavi֑d vekal-ha'am֙ vekal-hagּibּori֔ym miymiyn֖o umishsּemo'lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He pelted David and all the king’s officials with stones, though all the troops and the elite guards were on David’s right and left.

וַיְסַקֵּ֤ל בָּֽאֲבָנִים֙ אֶת־דָּוִ֔ד וְאֶת־כָּל־עַבְדֵ֖י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑ד וְכָל־הָעָם֙ וְכָל־הַגִּבֹּרִ֔ים מִימִינ֖וֹ וּמִשְּׂמֹאלֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekoֽh-'ama֥r shshime'i֖y bּeqaֽlel֑o tze֥ tze֛ 'i֥yshsh hadּami֖ym ve'i֥yshsh habּeliyּaֽ'al׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As he cursed, Shimei said, 'Get out, get out, you murderer, you scoundrel!'

וְכֹֽה־אָמַ֥ר שִׁמְעִ֖י בְּקַֽלְל֑וֹ צֵ֥א צֵ֛א אִ֥ישׁ הַדָּמִ֖ים וְאִ֥ישׁ הַבְּלִיָּֽעַל׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): heshshiyb֩ 'ale֨yka yehva֜h kּo֣l ׀ dּeme֣y beyt-shsha'֗ul 'ashshe֤r mala֨ketּa֙ tchtv tּachetּa֔yv vayּitּe֤n yehvah֙ 'et-hamּeluka֔h bּeya֖d 'abeshshal֣om bּene֑ka vehinּeka֙ bּera֣'ate֔ka kּi֛y 'i֥yshsh dּami֖ym 'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'the LORD has repaid you for all the blood you shed in the household of Saul, in whose place you have reigned. the LORD has given the kingdom into the hands of your son Absalom. You have come to ruin because you are a murderer!'

הֵשִׁיב֩ עָלֶ֨יךָ יְהוָ֜ה כֹּ֣ל ׀ דְּמֵ֣י בֵית־שָׁא֗וּל אֲשֶׁ֤ר מָלַ֨כְתָּ֙ תחתו תַּחְתָּ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֤ן יְהוָה֙ אֶת־הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה בְּיַ֖ד אַבְשָׁל֣וֹם בְּנֶ֑ךָ וְהִנְּךָ֙ בְּרָ֣עָתֶ֔ךָ כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ דָּמִ֖ים אָֽתָּה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'abiyshsha֤y bּen-tzeruyah֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke la֣mּah yeqalּe֞l hakּe֤leb hamּet֙ hazּe֔h 'et-'adoni֖y hamּe֑leke 'e'ebּerah-nּa֖ ve'asi֥yrah 'et-ro'shshֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, 'Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲבִישַׁ֤י בֶּן־צְרוּיָה֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָ֣מָּה יְקַלֵּ֞ל הַכֶּ֤לֶב הַמֵּת֙ הַזֶּ֔ה אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ אֶעְבְּרָה־נָּ֖א וְאָסִ֥ירָה אֶת־רֹאשֽׁוֹ׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֔leke mah-lּi֥y velake֖m bּene֣y tzeruya֑h ky kּo֣h yeqalּe֗l vky kּi֤y yehvah֙ 'a֤mar lo֙ qalּe֣l 'et-dּavi֔d umi֣y yo'ma֔r madּ֖u'a 'ashsi֥ytah kּeֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But the king said, 'What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? If he is cursing because the LORD said to him, "Curse David," who can ask, "Why do you do this?"'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ מַה־לִּ֥י וְלָכֶ֖ם בְּנֵ֣י צְרֻיָ֑ה כי כֹּ֣ה יְקַלֵּ֗ל וכי כִּ֤י יְהוָה֙ אָ֤מַר לוֹ֙ קַלֵּ֣ל אֶת־דָּוִ֔ד וּמִ֣י יֹאמַ֔ר מַדּ֖וּעַ עָשִׂ֥יתָה כֵּֽן׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer dּavi֤d 'el-'abiyshshay֙ ve'el-kּal-'abada֔yv hinּe֥h beni֛y 'ashsher-yatza֥ mimּe'a֖y mebaqּe֣shsh 'et-napeshshi֑y ve'a֨p kּiֽy-'atּa֜h bּen-hayemiyni֗y hanּi֤chu lo֙ viֽyqalּe֔l kּi֥y 'aֽmar-l֖o yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David then said to Abishai and all his officials, 'My son, who is of my own flesh, is trying to kill me. How much more, then, this Benjamite! Leave him alone; let him curse, for the LORD has told him to.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֤ד אֶל־אֲבִישַׁי֙ וְאֶל־כָּל־עֲבָדָ֔יו הִנֵּ֥ה בְנִ֛י אֲשֶׁר־יָצָ֥א מִמֵּעַ֖י מְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אֶת־נַפְשִׁ֑י וְאַ֨ף כִּֽי־עַתָּ֜ה בֶּן־הַיְמִינִ֗י הַנִּ֤חוּ לוֹ֙ וִֽיקַלֵּ֔ל כִּ֥י אָֽמַר־ל֖וֹ יְהוָֽה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ula֛y yire'e֥h yehva֖h b'vny bּe'eyni֑y veheshshi֨yb yehva֥h liy֙ toba֔h tּa֥chat qilelat֖o hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'It may be that the LORD will see my misery and repay me with good for the cursing I am receiving today.'

אוּלַ֛י יִרְאֶ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה בעוני בְּעֵינִ֑י וְהֵשִׁ֨יב יְהוָ֥ה לִי֙ טוֹבָ֔ה תַּ֥חַת קִלְלָת֖וֹ הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧leke dּavi֛d va'anashsha֖yv bּadּa֑reke s veshshime'i֡y holeke֩ bּetze֨la haha֜r le'umּat֗o haloke֙ vayeqalּe֔l vayesaqּe֤l bּaֽ'abaniym֙ le'umּat֔o ve'ipּa֖r bּe'apaֽr׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So David and his men continued along the road while Shimei was going along the hillside opposite him, cursing as he went and throwing stones at him and showering him with dirt.

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ דָּוִ֛ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֖יו בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ ס וְשִׁמְעִ֡י הֹלֵךְ֩ בְּצֵ֨לַע הָהָ֜ר לְעֻמָּת֗וֹ הָלוֹךְ֙ וַיְקַלֵּ֔ל וַיְסַקֵּ֤ל בָּֽאֲבָנִים֙ לְעֻמָּת֔וֹ וְעִפַּ֖ר בֶּעָפָֽר׃פ

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ hamּe֛leke vekal-ha'a֥m 'ashsher-'itּ֖o 'ayepi֑ym vayּinּape֖shsh shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king and all the people with him arrived at their destination exhausted. And there he refreshed himself.

וַיָּבֹ֥א הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ וְכָל־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֖וֹ עֲיֵפִ֑ים וַיִּנָּפֵ֖שׁ שָֽׁם׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abeshshal֗om vekal-ha'am֙ 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l bּa֖'u yerushshala֑im va'achiyto֖pel 'itּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile, Absalom and all the men of Israel came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel was with him.

וְאַבְשָׁל֗וֹם וְכָל־הָעָם֙ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּ֖אוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַאֲחִיתֹ֖פֶל אִתּֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּaֽ'ashsher-bּa֞ chushsha֧y ha'arekּi֛y re'e֥h davi֖d 'el-'abeshshal֑om vayּo֤'mer chushshay֙ 'el-'abeshshalo֔m yechi֥y hamּe֖leke yechi֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, went to Absalom and said to him, 'Long live the king! Long live the king!'

וַיְהִ֗י כַּֽאֲשֶׁר־בָּ֞א חוּשַׁ֧י הָאַרְכִּ֛י רֵעֶ֥ה דָוִ֖ד אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר חוּשַׁי֙ אֶל־אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם יְחִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יְחִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'abeshshalom֙ 'el-chushsha֔y ze֥h chasedּeka֖ 'et-re'e֑ka la֥mּah loֽ'-hala֖ketּa 'et-re'eֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom asked Hushai, 'Is this the love you show your friend? Why didn't you go with your friend?'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֶל־חוּשַׁ֔י זֶ֥ה חַסְדְּךָ֖ אֶת־רֵעֶ֑ךָ לָ֥מָּה לֹֽא־הָלַ֖כְתָּ אֶת־רֵעֶֽךָ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer chushshay֮ 'el-'abeshshalom֒ lo֕ kּiy֩ 'ashshe֨r bּacha֧r yehva֛h veha'a֥m hazּe֖h vekal-'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֑l l l֥o 'eheye֖h ve'itּ֥o 'eshsheֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hushai said to Absalom, 'No, the one chosen by the LORD, by these people, and by all the men of Israel, his I will be, and with him I will remain.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חוּשַׁי֮ אֶל־אַבְשָׁלֹם֒ לֹ֕א כִּי֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר בָּחַ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה וְהָעָ֥ם הַזֶּ֖ה וְכָל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לא ל֥וֹ אֶהְיֶ֖ה וְאִתּ֥וֹ אֵשֵֽׁב׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehashshּeni֗yt lemiy֙ 'ani֣y 'eֽ'ebo֔d hal֖o lipene֣y ben֑o kּa'ashshe֤r 'aba֨detּiy֙ lipene֣y 'abi֔yka kּe֖n 'eheye֥h lepaneֽyka׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'Furthermore, whom should I serve? Should I not serve the son? Just as I served your father, so I will serve you.'

וְהַשֵּׁנִ֗ית לְמִי֙ אֲנִ֣י אֶֽעֱבֹ֔ד הֲל֖וֹא לִפְנֵ֣י בְנ֑וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר עָבַ֨דְתִּי֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אָבִ֔יךָ כֵּ֖ן אֶהְיֶ֥ה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃פ

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'abeshshal֖om 'el-'achiyto֑pel hab֥u lake֛m 'etza֖h maֽh-nּa'ashseֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom said to Ahithophel, 'Give us your advice. What should we do?'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־אֲחִיתֹ֑פֶל הָב֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם עֵצָ֖ה מַֽה־נַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'achiyto֨pel֙ 'el-'abeshshalo֔m bּ֚o 'el-pּilageshshe֣y 'abi֔yka 'ashshe֥r hinּi֖ycha lishshem֣or habּa֑yit veshshama֤ kּal-yishsera'el֙ kּiֽy-nibe'a֣shshetּa 'et-'abi֔yka vecha֣zeq֔u yede֖y kּal-'ashshe֥r 'itּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahithophel answered, 'Sleep with your father’s concubines whom he left to take care of the palace. Then all Israel will hear that you have made yourself obnoxious to your father, and the hands of everyone with you will be more courageous.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲחִיתֹ֨פֶל֙ אֶל־אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם בּ֚וֹא אֶל־פִּלַגְשֵׁ֣י אָבִ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִנִּ֖יחַ לִשְׁמ֣וֹר הַבָּ֑יִת וְשָׁמַ֤ע כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּֽי־נִבְאַ֣שְׁתָּ אֶת־אָבִ֔יךָ וְחָ֣זְק֔וּ יְדֵ֖י כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתָּֽךְ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּatּ֧u le'abeshshal֛om ha'o֖hel 'al-hagּa֑g vayּabo֤ 'abeshshalom֙ 'el-pּiֽlageshshe֣y 'abi֔yv le'eyne֖y kּal-yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof, and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel.

וַיַּטּ֧וּ לְאַבְשָׁל֛וֹם הָאֹ֖הֶל עַל־הַגָּ֑ג וַיָּבֹ֤א אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֶל־פִּֽלַגְשֵׁ֣י אָבִ֔יו לְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'atza֣t 'achiyto֗pel 'ashshe֤r ya'atz֙ bּayּami֣ym hahe֔m kּa'ashshe֥r yishshe'al-'i֖yshsh bּideba֣r ha'elohi֑ym kּe֚n kּal-'atza֣t 'achiyto֔pel gּam-ledavi֖d gּa֥m le'abeshshaloֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Now in those days the advice Ahithophel gave was like that of one who inquires of God. That was how both David and Absalom regarded all of Ahithophel’s advice.

וַעֲצַ֣ת אֲחִיתֹ֗פֶל אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָעַץ֙ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יִשְׁאַל־אִ֖ישׁ בִּדְבַ֣ר הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כֵּ֚ן כָּל־עֲצַ֣ת אֲחִיתֹ֔פֶל גַּם־לְדָוִ֖ד גַּ֥ם לְאַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃ס
