Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'achiyto֖pel 'el-'abeshshalo֑m 'ebechara֣h nּa֗ shsheneym-'ashsa֥r 'e֨lep֙ 'i֔yshsh ve'aq֛umah ve'eredּepa֥h 'acharey-davi֖d halּaֽyelah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahithophel said to Absalom, 'I would choose twelve thousand men and set out tonight in pursuit of David.'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲחִיתֹ֖פֶל אֶל־אַבְשָׁלֹ֑ם אֶבְחֲרָ֣ה נָּ֗א שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֨לֶף֙ אִ֔ישׁ וְאָק֛וּמָה וְאֶרְדְּפָ֥ה אַחֲרֵי־דָוִ֖ד הַלָּֽיְלָה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ab֣o 'ala֗yv veh֤u yage֨'a֙ urepe֣h yada֔yim vehaֽcharadetּi֣y 'ot֔o vena֖s kּal-ha'a֣m 'ashsher-'itּ֑o vehikּeyti֥y 'et-hamּe֖leke lebadּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I would attack him while he is weary and weak. I would strike him with terror, and then all the people with him will flee. I would strike down only the king'

וְאָב֣וֹא עָלָ֗יו וְה֤וּא יָגֵ֨עַ֙ וּרְפֵ֣ה יָדַ֔יִם וְהַֽחֲרַדְתִּ֣י אֹת֔וֹ וְנָ֖ס כָּל־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֑וֹ וְהִכֵּיתִ֥י אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ לְבַדּֽוֹ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ashshi֥ybah kal-ha'a֖m 'ele֑yka kּeshsh֣ub hakּo֔l ha'iyshsh֙ 'ashshe֣r 'atּa֣h mebaqּe֔shsh kּal-ha'a֖m yiheye֥h shshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'and bring all the people back to you. The death of the man you seek will mean the return of all; all the people will be unharmed.'

וְאָשִׁ֥יבָה כָל־הָעָ֖ם אֵלֶ֑יךָ כְּשׁ֣וּב הַכֹּ֔ל הָאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתָּ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֔שׁ כָּל־הָעָ֖ם יִהְיֶ֥ה שָׁלֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiyshsha֥r hadּaba֖r bּe'eyne֣y 'abeshshalo֑m ube'eyne֖y kּal-ziqene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)This plan seemed good to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.

וַיִּישַׁ֥ר הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י אַבְשָׁלֹ֑ם וּבְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־זִקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'abeshshal֔om qera֣ na֔ gּa֖m lechushsha֣y ha'arekּi֑y venishsheme'a֥h mah-bּepi֖yv gּam-hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Absalom said, 'Summon also Hushai the Archite, so we can hear what he has to say as well.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַבְשָׁל֔וֹם קְרָ֣א נָ֔א גַּ֖ם לְחוּשַׁ֣י הָאַרְכִּ֑י וְנִשְׁמְעָ֥ה מַה־בְּפִ֖יו גַּם־הֽוּא׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣ chushshay֮ 'el-'abeshshalom֒ vayּo'mer֩ 'abeshshal֨om 'ela֜yv le'mo֗r kּadּaba֤r hazּeh֙ dּibּe֣r 'achiyto֔pel hana'ashse֖h 'et-dּebar֑o 'im-'a֖yin 'atּa֥h dabּeֽr׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When Hushai came to him, Absalom said, 'Ahithophel has given this advice. Should we do what he says? If not, give us your opinion.'

וַיָּבֹ֣א חוּשַׁי֮ אֶל־אַבְשָׁלוֹם֒ וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אַבְשָׁל֨וֹם אֵלָ֜יו לֵאמֹ֗ר כַּדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ דִּבֶּ֣ר אֲחִיתֹ֔פֶל הֲנַעֲשֶׂ֖ה אֶת־דְּבָר֑וֹ אִם־אַ֖יִן אַתָּ֥ה דַבֵּֽר׃ס

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer chushsha֖y 'el-'abeshshal֑om loֽ'-toba֧h ha'etza֛h 'ashsher-ya'a֥tz 'achiyto֖pel bּapּa֥'am hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hushai replied to Absalom, 'The advice Ahithophel has given is not good this time.'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר חוּשַׁ֖י אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֑וֹם לֹֽא־טוֹבָ֧ה הָעֵצָ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־יָעַ֥ץ אֲחִיתֹ֖פֶל בַּפַּ֥עַם הַזֹּֽאת׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer chushsha֗y 'atּa֣h ya֠da'etּa 'et-'abi֨yka ve'et-'anashsha֜yv kּi֧y gibּori֣ym he֗mּah umare֥y ne֨peshsh֙ he֔mּah kּedo֥b shshakּ֖ul bּashsּade֑h ve'abi֨yka֙ 'i֣yshsh milechama֔h velo֥ yali֖yn 'et-ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'You know your father and his men; they are fighters, and as fierce as a wild bear robbed of her cubs. Besides, your father is an experienced soldier; he will not spend the night with the troops.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חוּשַׁ֗י אַתָּ֣ה יָ֠דַעְתָּ אֶת־אָבִ֨יךָ וְאֶת־אֲנָשָׁ֜יו כִּ֧י גִבֹּרִ֣ים הֵ֗מָּה וּמָרֵ֥י נֶ֨פֶשׁ֙ הֵ֔מָּה כְּדֹ֥ב שַׁכּ֖וּל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה וְאָבִ֨יךָ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א יָלִ֖ין אֶת־הָעָֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֨h 'atּa֤h hֽu'-nechebּa'֙ bּe'acha֣t hapּechati֔ym '֖o bּe'acha֣d hamּeqomo֑t vehaya֗h kּinepo֤l bּahem֙ bּatּechilּa֔h veshshama֤ hashshּome֨'a֙ ve'ama֔r haֽyetah֙ magּepa֔h bּa'a֕m 'ashshe֖r 'achare֥y 'abeshshaloֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Even now, he is probably hiding in a cave or some other place. If he should attack your troops first, whoever hears it will say, "There has been a slaughter among the followers of Absalom."'

הִנֵּ֨ה עַתָּ֤ה הֽוּא־נֶחְבָּא֙ בְּאַחַ֣ת הַפְּחָתִ֔ים א֖וֹ בְּאַחַ֣ד הַמְּקוֹמֹ֑ת וְהָיָ֗ה כִּנְפֹ֤ל בָּהֶם֙ בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה וְשָׁמַ֤ע הַשֹּׁמֵ֨עַ֙ וְאָמַ֔ר הָֽיְתָה֙ מַגֵּפָ֔ה בָּעָ֕ם אֲשֶׁ֖ר אַחֲרֵ֥י אַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veh֣u gam-bּen-cha֗yil 'ashshe֥r libּ֛o kּele֥b ha'areye֖h himּe֣s yimּa֑s kּiֽy-yode֤'a kּal-yishsera'el֙ kּiy-gibּ֣or 'abi֔yka ubeney-cha֖yil 'ashshe֥r 'itּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Then even the bravest soldier, whose heart is like the heart of a lion, will melt with fear, for all Israel knows that your father is a fighter and that those with him are brave.'

וְה֣וּא גַם־בֶּן־חַ֗יִל אֲשֶׁ֥ר לִבּ֛וֹ כְּלֵ֥ב הָאַרְיֵ֖ה הִמֵּ֣ס יִמָּ֑ס כִּֽי־יֹדֵ֤עַ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּי־גִבּ֣וֹר אָבִ֔יךָ וּבְנֵי־חַ֖יִל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ya'a֗tzetּiy he֠'asop ye'ase֨p 'ale֤yka kal-yishsera'el֙ midּan֙ ve'ad-bּe'e֣r shshe֔ba kּach֥ol 'ashsher-'al-hayּa֖m laro֑b upane֥yka holeki֖ym bּaqeraֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'So I advise: Let all Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, as numerous as the sand on the seashore, be gathered to you, with you yourself leading them into battle.'

כִּ֣י יָעַ֗צְתִּי הֵ֠אָסֹף יֵאָסֵ֨ף עָלֶ֤יךָ כָל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִדָּן֙ וְעַד־בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע כַּח֥וֹל אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַיָּ֖ם לָרֹ֑ב וּפָנֶ֥יךָ הֹלְכִ֖ים בַּקְרָֽב׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba֣'nu 'ela֗yv b'cht bּe'acha֤d hamּeqomot֙ 'ashshe֣r nimetza֣ shsha֔m vena֣chenu 'ala֔yv kּa'ashshe֛r yipּo֥l hatּa֖l 'al-ha'adama֑h veloֽ'-n֥otar bּ֛o ubekal-ha'anashshi֥ym 'ashsher-'itּ֖o gּam-'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Then we will attack him wherever he may be found, and we will fall on him as dew settles on the ground. Neither he nor any of his men will be left alive.'

וּבָ֣אנוּ אֵלָ֗יו באחת בְּאַחַ֤ד הַמְּקוֹמֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִמְצָ֣א שָׁ֔ם וְנַ֣חְנוּ עָלָ֔יו כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יִפֹּ֥ל הַטַּ֖ל עַל־הָאֲדָמָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־נ֥וֹתַר בּ֛וֹ וּבְכָל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֥ים אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֖וֹ גַּם־אֶחָֽד׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'el-'iyr֙ yeֽ'ase֔p vehishsּi֧y'u kaֽl-yishsera'e֛l 'el-ha'i֥yr hahi֖y chabali֑ym vesacha֤benu 'oto֙ 'ad-hanּa֔chal 'a֛d 'ashsheֽr-lo'-nimetza֥ shsha֖m gּam-tzerֽor׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'If he withdraws into a city, then all Israel will bring ropes to that city, and we will drag it down to the valley until not even a pebble is left.'

וְאִם־אֶל־עִיר֙ יֵֽאָסֵ֔ף וְהִשִּׂ֧יאוּ כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־הָעִ֥יר הַהִ֖יא חֲבָלִ֑ים וְסָחַ֤בְנוּ אֹתוֹ֙ עַד־הַנַּ֔חַל עַ֛ד אֲשֶֽׁר־לֹא־נִמְצָ֥א שָׁ֖ם גַּם־צְרֽוֹר׃פ

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'abeshshalom֙ vekal-'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l toba֗h 'atzat֙ chushsha֣y ha'arekּi֔y me'atza֖t 'achiyto֑pel vayhva֣h tziua֗h lehape֞r 'et-'atza֤t 'achiyto֨pel֙ hatּoba֔h leba'ab֗ur habi֧y yehva֛h 'el-'abeshshal֖om 'et-hara'aֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom and all the men of Israel said, 'The advice of Hushai the Archite is better than that of Ahithophel.' For the LORD had determined to frustrate the good advice of Ahithophel in order to bring disaster on Absalom.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ וְכָל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל טוֹבָ֗ה עֲצַת֙ חוּשַׁ֣י הָאַרְכִּ֔י מֵעֲצַ֖ת אֲחִיתֹ֑פֶל וַיהוָ֣ה צִוָּ֗ה לְהָפֵ֞ר אֶת־עֲצַ֤ת אֲחִיתֹ֨פֶל֙ הַטּוֹבָ֔ה לְבַעֲב֗וּר הָבִ֧יא יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם אֶת־הָרָעָֽה׃ס

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer chushsha֗y 'el-tzad֤oq ve'el-'ebeyatar֙ hakּo֣hani֔ym kּazo֣'t vekazo֗'t ya'a֤tz 'achiyto֨pel֙ 'et-'abeshshalo֔m ve'e֖t ziqene֣y yishsera'e֑l vekazo֥'t vekazo֖'t ya'a֥tzetּiy 'aֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hushai told Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, 'Ahithophel has advised Absalom and the elders of Israel to do such and such, but I have advised them to do this and that.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר חוּשַׁ֗י אֶל־צָד֤וֹק וְאֶל־אֶבְיָתָר֙ הַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים כָּזֹ֣את וְכָזֹ֗את יָעַ֤ץ אֲחִיתֹ֨פֶל֙ אֶת־אַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם וְאֵ֖ת זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְכָזֹ֥את וְכָזֹ֖את יָעַ֥צְתִּי אָֽנִי׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֡h shshilech֣u meherah֩ vehagּi֨ydu ledavi֜d le'mo֗r 'al-tּa֤len halּa֨yelah֙ bּe'aֽreb֣ot hamּidebּa֔r vega֖m 'ab֣or tּa'ab֑or pּe֚n yebulּa֣ lamּe֔leke ulekal-ha'a֖m 'ashshe֥r 'itּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now send a message immediately and tell David, "Do not spend the night at the fords in the wilderness; cross over without fail, or the king and all the people with him will be swallowed up."'

וְעַתָּ֡ה שִׁלְח֣וּ מְהֵרָה֩ וְהַגִּ֨ידוּ לְדָוִ֜ד לֵאמֹ֗ר אַל־תָּ֤לֶן הַלַּ֨יְלָה֙ בְּעַֽרְב֣וֹת הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְגַ֖ם עָב֣וֹר תַּעֲב֑וֹר פֶּ֚ן יְבֻלַּ֣ע לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וּלְכָל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): viyhonata֨n va'achiyma֜'atz 'omedi֣ym bּe'eyn-roge֗l vehaleka֤h hashshּipechah֙ vehigּi֣ydah lahe֔m vehem֙ yeֽlek֔u vehigּi֖ydu lamּe֣leke dּavi֑d kּi֣y lo֥ yukel֛u lehera'֖ot lab֥o ha'iֽyrah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En Rogel. A female servant would go and tell them, and they would go and inform King David, for they could not risk being seen entering the city.

וִיהוֹנָתָ֨ן וַאֲחִימַ֜עַץ עֹמְדִ֣ים בְּעֵין־רֹגֵ֗ל וְהָלְכָ֤ה הַשִּׁפְחָה֙ וְהִגִּ֣ידָה לָהֶ֔ם וְהֵם֙ יֵֽלְכ֔וּ וְהִגִּ֖ידוּ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑ד כִּ֣י לֹ֥א יוּכְל֛וּ לְהֵרָא֖וֹת לָב֥וֹא הָעִֽירָה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤re 'otam֙ na֔'ar vayּagּe֖d le'abeshshalo֑m vayּeleku֩ shsheneyhe֨m mehera֜h vayּabo֣'u ׀ 'el-bּeֽyt-'i֣yshsh bּebachuri֗ym vel֥o be'e֛r bּachatzer֖o vayּe֥redu shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But a young man saw them and told Absalom. So the two of them left quickly and went to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his courtyard, and they climbed down into it.

וַיַּ֤רְא אֹתָם֙ נַ֔עַר וַיַּגֵּ֖ד לְאַבְשָׁלֹ֑ם וַיֵּלְכוּ֩ שְׁנֵיהֶ֨ם מְהֵרָ֜ה וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ ׀ אֶל־בֵּֽית־אִ֣ישׁ בְּבַחוּרִ֗ים וְל֥וֹ בְאֵ֛ר בַּחֲצֵר֖וֹ וַיֵּ֥רְדוּ שָֽׁם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqּa֣ch ha'ishshּa֗h vatּipero֤shs 'et-hamּasake֙ 'al-pּene֣y habּe'e֔r vatּishsheta֥ch 'ala֖yv haֽrip֑ot velo֥ noda֖ dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His wife took a covering and spread it over the mouth of the well and scattered grain over it. No one knew anything about it.

וַתִּקַּ֣ח הָאִשָּׁ֗ה וַתִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־הַמָּסָךְ֙ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י הַבְּאֵ֔ר וַתִּשְׁטַ֥ח עָלָ֖יו הָֽרִפ֑וֹת וְלֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע דָּבָֽר׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣'u 'abedey֩ 'abeshshal֨om 'eֽl-ha'ishshּa֜h habּa֗yetah vayּoֽ'meru֙ 'ayּe֗h 'achiyma֨'atz֙ viyh֣onata֔n vatּo֤'mer lahem֙ haֽ'ishshּa֔h 'aber֖u miyka֣l hamּa֑yim vayebaqeshshu֙ velo֣ matza֔'u vayּashshu֖bu yerushshalaiֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When Absalom’s men came to the woman at the house, they asked, 'Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?' The woman answered them, 'They crossed over the brook.' After the men had searched and found nothing, they returned to Jerusalem.

וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ עַבְדֵי֩ אַבְשָׁל֨וֹם אֶֽל־הָאִשָּׁ֜ה הַבַּ֗יְתָה וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אַיֵּ֗ה אֲחִימַ֨עַץ֙ וִיה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ הָֽאִשָּׁ֔ה עָבְר֖וּ מִיכַ֣ל הַמָּ֑יִם וַיְבַקְשׁוּ֙ וְלֹ֣א מָצָ֔אוּ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ 'achare֣y leketּa֗m vֽayּa'alu֙ meֽhabּe'e֔r vayּe֣lek֔u vayּagּi֖du lamּe֣leke dּavi֑d vayּo'mer֣u 'el-dּavi֗d q֣umu ve'iber֤u meherah֙ 'et-hamּa֔yim kּiy-ka֛kah ya'a֥tz 'aleyke֖m 'achiytoֽpel׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After the men had gone, the two climbed out of the well and went to inform King David. They said to him, 'Set out and cross the river at once; Ahithophel has advised such and such against you.'

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ אַחֲרֵ֣י לֶכְתָּ֗ם וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ מֵֽהַבְּאֵ֔ר וַיֵּ֣לְכ֔וּ וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑ד וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד ק֣וּמוּ וְעִבְר֤וּ מְהֵרָה֙ אֶת־הַמַּ֔יִם כִּי־כָ֛כָה יָעַ֥ץ עֲלֵיכֶ֖ם אֲחִיתֹֽפֶל׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam dּavi֗d vekal-ha'am֙ 'ashshe֣r 'itּ֔o vayּa'aber֖u 'et-hayּaredּe֑n 'ad-'֣or habּo֗qer 'ad-'achad֙ lo֣ ne'edּa֔r 'ashshe֥r lo'-'aba֖r 'et-hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So David and all the people with him set out and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, no one was left who had not crossed the Jordan.

וַיָּ֣קָם דָּוִ֗ד וְכָל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן עַד־א֣וֹר הַבֹּ֗קֶר עַד־אַחַד֙ לֹ֣א נֶעְדָּ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־עָבַ֖ר אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'achiyto֣pel ra'a֗h kּi֣y lo֣ ne'eshsetah֮ 'atzato֒ vayּachabo֣shsh 'eֽt-hacham֗or vayּa֜qam vayּe֤leke 'el-bּeyto֙ 'el-'iyr֔o vayetza֥v 'el-bּeyt֖o vayּechana֑q vayּa֕mat vayּiqּabe֖r bּeqe֥ber 'abiֽyv׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his hometown. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

וַאֲחִיתֹ֣פֶל רָאָ֗ה כִּ֣י לֹ֣א נֶעֶשְׂתָה֮ עֲצָתוֹ֒ וַיַּחֲבֹ֣שׁ אֶֽת־הַחֲמ֗וֹר וַיָּ֜קָם וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ אֶל־בֵּיתוֹ֙ אֶל־עִיר֔וֹ וַיְצַ֥ו אֶל־בֵּית֖וֹ וַיֵּחָנַ֑ק וַיָּ֕מָת וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּקֶ֥בֶר אָבִֽיו׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֖d bּa֣ machana֑yemah ve'abeshshalo֗m 'abar֙ 'et-hayּaredּe֔n h֕u vekal-'i֥yshsh yishsera'e֖l 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David went to Mahanaim, and Absalom crossed the Jordan with all the men of Israel.

וְדָוִ֖ד בָּ֣א מַחֲנָ֑יְמָה וְאַבְשָׁלֹ֗ם עָבַר֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן ה֕וּא וְכָל־אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-'amashsa֗ shsa֧m 'abeshshalo֛m tּa֥chat yo'a֖b 'al-hatzּaba֑ va'amashsa֣ ben-'i֗yshsh ushshemo֙ yitera֣ hayּishsere'eli֔y 'ashsher-bּa'֙ 'el-'abiyga֣l bּat-nacha֔shsh 'ach֥ot tzeruya֖h 'e֥m yo'aֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Absalom had appointed Amasa over the army in place of Joab. Amasa was the son of Jether, an Ishmaelite who had married Abigail, the daughter of Nahash and sister of Zeruiah the mother of Joab.

וְאֶת־עֲמָשָׂ֗א שָׂ֧ם אַבְשָׁלֹ֛ם תַּ֥חַת יוֹאָ֖ב עַל־הַצָּבָ֑א וַעֲמָשָׂ֣א בֶן־אִ֗ישׁ וּשְׁמוֹ֙ יִתְרָ֣א הַיִּשְׂרְאֵלִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־בָּא֙ אֶל־אֲבִיגַ֣ל בַּת־נָחָ֔שׁ אֲח֥וֹת צְרוּיָ֖ה אֵ֥ם יוֹאָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤chan yishsera'el֙ ve'abeshshalo֔m 'e֖retz hagּile'aֽd׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The Israelites and Absalom camped in the land of Gilead.

וַיִּ֤חַן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וְאַבְשָׁלֹ֔ם אֶ֖רֶץ הַגִּלְעָֽד׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּeb֥o davi֖d machana֑yemah veshshobi֨y ben-nacha֜shsh merabּa֣t bּeneֽy-'amּ֗on umaki֤yr bּen-'amּiy'el֙ milּo֣ deba֔r ubarezilּa֥y hagּile'adi֖y merogeliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When David arrived at Mahanaim, Shobi son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Makir son of Ammiel from Lo Debar, and Barzillai the Gileadite from Rogelim

וַיְהִ֕י כְּב֥וֹא דָוִ֖ד מַחֲנָ֑יְמָה וְשֹׁבִ֨י בֶן־נָחָ֜שׁ מֵרַבַּ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־עַמּ֗וֹן וּמָכִ֤יר בֶּן־עַמִּיאֵל֙ מִלֹּ֣א דְבָ֔ר וּבַרְזִלַּ֥י הַגִּלְעָדִ֖י מֵרֹגְלִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mishshekּa֤b vesapּot֙ ukeli֣y yotze֔r vechitּi֥ym ushse'ori֖ym veqe֣mach veqali֑y up֥ol va'adashshi֖ym veqaliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils,

מִשְׁכָּ֤ב וְסַפּוֹת֙ וּכְלִ֣י יוֹצֵ֔ר וְחִטִּ֥ים וּשְׂעֹרִ֖ים וְקֶ֣מַח וְקָלִ֑י וּפ֥וֹל וַעֲדָשִׁ֖ים וְקָלִֽי׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): udeba֣shsh vecheme'a֗h vetzo'n֙ ushshep֣ot bּaqa֔r higּi֧yshshu ledavi֛d vela'a֥m 'ashsher-'itּ֖o le'ek֑ol kּi֣y 'amer֔u ha'a֗m ra'e֛b ve'aye֥p vetzame֖ bּamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)honey and curds, sheep and cheese from cows' milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, 'The people have become hungry and tired and thirsty in the wilderness.'

וּדְבַ֣שׁ וְחֶמְאָ֗ה וְצֹאן֙ וּשְׁפ֣וֹת בָּקָ֔ר הִגִּ֧ישׁוּ לְדָוִ֛ד וְלָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֖וֹ לֶאֱכ֑וֹל כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ הָעָ֗ם רָעֵ֛ב וְעָיֵ֥ף וְצָמֵ֖א בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃
