Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiregּa֣z hamּe֗leke vayּa֛'al 'al-'aliyּa֥t hashshּa֖'ar vayּe֑bekּe veko֣h ׀ 'ama֣r bּeleketּ֗o bּeni֤y 'abeshshalom֙ bּeni֣y beni֣y 'abeshshal֔om miֽy-yitּe֤n mutiy֙ 'ani֣y tachetּe֔yka 'abeshshal֖om bּeni֥y beniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab was told, 'The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.'

וַיִּרְגַּ֣ז הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וַיַּ֛עַל עַל־עֲלִיַּ֥ת הַשַּׁ֖עַר וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וְכֹ֣ה ׀ אָמַ֣ר בְּלֶכְתּ֗וֹ בְּנִ֤י אַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ בְּנִ֣י בְנִ֣י אַבְשָׁל֔וֹם מִֽי־יִתֵּ֤ן מוּתִי֙ אֲנִ֣י תַחְתֶּ֔יךָ אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם בְּנִ֥י בְנִֽי׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֖d leyo'a֑b hinּe֨h hamּe֧leke bּoke֛h vayּite'abּe֖l 'al-'abeshshaloֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, 'The king is grieving for his son.'

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לְיוֹאָ֑ב הִנֵּ֨ה הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ בֹּכֶ֛ה וַיִּתְאַבֵּ֖ל עַל־אַבְשָׁלֹֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֨y hatּeshshu'a֜h bּayּ֥om hah֛u le'e֖bel lekal-ha'a֑m kּiֽy-shshama֣ ha'a֗m bּayּ֤om hahu'֙ le'mo֔r ne'etza֥b hamּe֖leke 'al-bּenֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The army stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle.

וַתְּהִ֨י הַתְּשֻׁעָ֜ה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֛וּא לְאֵ֖בֶל לְכָל־הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֣ע הָעָ֗ם בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר נֶעֱצַ֥ב הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַל־בְּנֽוֹ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitegּanּe֥b ha'a֛m bּayּ֥om hah֖u lab֣o ha'i֑yr kּa'ashshe֣r yitegּanּe֗b ha'am֙ hanּikelami֔ym bּenusa֖m bּamּilechamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king covered his face and cried aloud, 'O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!'

וַיִּתְגַּנֵּ֥ב הָעָ֛ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לָב֣וֹא הָעִ֑יר כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְגַּנֵּ֗ב הָעָם֙ הַנִּכְלָמִ֔ים בְּנוּסָ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehamּe֨leke֙ la'a֣t 'et-pּana֔yv vayּize'a֥q hamּe֖leke q֣ol gּad֑ol bּeniy֙ 'abeshshal֔om 'abeshshal֖om bּeni֥y beniֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, 'Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines.'

וְהַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ לָאַ֣ט אֶת־פָּנָ֔יו וַיִּזְעַ֥ק הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ ק֣וֹל גָּד֑וֹל בְּנִי֙ אַבְשָׁל֔וֹם אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם בְּנִ֥י בְנִֽי׃ס

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ yo'a֛b 'el-hamּe֖leke habּa֑yit vayּo'mer֩ hoba֨shshetּa hayּ֜om 'et-pּene֣y kal-'abade֗yka haֽmemalּeti֤ym 'eֽt-napeshsheka֙ hayּ֔om ve'e֨t ne֤peshsh bּane֨yka֙ ubenote֔yka vene֣peshsh nashshe֔yka vene֖peshsh pּilageshsheֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be quite happy if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead.'

וַיָּבֹ֥א יוֹאָ֛ב אֶל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ הַבָּ֑יִת וַיֹּאמֶר֩ הֹבַ֨שְׁתָּ הַיּ֜וֹם אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י כָל־עֲבָדֶ֗יךָ הַֽמְמַלְּטִ֤ים אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וְאֵ֨ת נֶ֤פֶשׁ בָּנֶ֨יךָ֙ וּבְנֹתֶ֔יךָ וְנֶ֣פֶשׁ נָשֶׁ֔יךָ וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ פִּלַגְשֶֽׁיךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): le'aֽhabah֙ 'et-shso֣ne'e֔yka velishseno֖ 'et-'ohabe֑yka kּi֣y ׀ higּa֣detּa hayּ֗om kּi֣y 'e֤yn leka֙ shsari֣ym va'abadi֔ym kּi֣y ׀ yada֣'etּiy hayּ֗om kּi֠y l l֣u 'abeshshal֥om chay֙ vekulּa֤nu hayּom֙ meti֔ym kּiy-'a֖z yashsha֥r bּe'eyneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you don't go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come on you from your youth till now.'

לְאַֽהֲבָה֙ אֶת־שֹׂ֣נְאֶ֔יךָ וְלִשְׂנֹ֖א אֶת־אֹהֲבֶ֑יךָ כִּ֣י ׀ הִגַּ֣דְתָּ הַיּ֗וֹם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין לְךָ֙ שָׂרִ֣ים וַעֲבָדִ֔ים כִּ֣י ׀ יָדַ֣עְתִּי הַיּ֗וֹם כִּ֠י לא ל֣וּ אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם חַי֙ וְכֻלָּ֤נוּ הַיּוֹם֙ מֵתִ֔ים כִּי־אָ֖ז יָשָׁ֥ר בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ q֣um tze֔ vedabּe֖r 'al-le֣b 'abade֑yka kּiy֩ bayhva֨h nishshebּa֜'etּiy kּiy-'eyneka֣ yotze֗ 'im-yali֨yn 'i֤yshsh 'itּeka֙ halּa֔yelah vera'a֧h leka֣ zo֗'t mikּal-hara'ah֙ 'ashsher-bּa֣'ah 'ale֔yka minּe'ure֖yka 'ad-'aֽtּah׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, 'The king is sitting in the gateway,' they all came before him. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled to their homes.

וְעַתָּה֙ ק֣וּם צֵ֔א וְדַבֵּ֖ר עַל־לֵ֣ב עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ כִּי֩ בַיהוָ֨ה נִשְׁבַּ֜עְתִּי כִּי־אֵינְךָ֣ יוֹצֵ֗א אִם־יָלִ֨ין אִ֤ישׁ אִתְּךָ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה וְרָעָ֧ה לְךָ֣ זֹ֗את מִכָּל־הָרָעָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֣אָה עָלֶ֔יךָ מִנְּעֻרֶ֖יךָ עַד־עָֽתָּה׃ס

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥qam hamּe֖leke vayּe֣shsheb bּashshּa֑'ar uֽlekal-ha'a֞m higּi֣ydu le'mo֗r hinּe֤h hamּe֨leke֙ yoshshe֣b bּashshּa֔'ar vayּabo֤ kal-ha'am֙ lipene֣y hamּe֔leke veyishsera'e֔l na֖s 'i֥yshsh le'ohalaֽyv׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Throughout the tribes of Israel, all the people were arguing among themselves, saying, 'The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies; he is the one who rescued us from the hand of the Philistines. But now he has fled the country to escape from Absalom;'

וַיָּ֥קָם הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב בַּשָּׁ֑עַר וּֽלְכָל־הָעָ֞ם הִגִּ֣ידוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הִנֵּ֤ה הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בַּשַּׁ֔עַר וַיָּבֹ֤א כָל־הָעָם֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל נָ֖ס אִ֥ישׁ לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y kal-ha'am֙ nad֔on bּekal-shshibete֥y yishsera'e֖l le'mo֑r hamּe֜leke hitzּiyla֣nu ׀ mikּa֣p 'oyebe֗ynu veh֤u milּeta֨nu֙ mikּa֣p pּelishshetּi֔ym ve'atּa֛h bּara֥ch min-ha'a֖retz me'a֥l 'abeshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'and Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?'

וַיְהִ֤י כָל־הָעָם֙ נָד֔וֹן בְּכָל־שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ הִצִּילָ֣נוּ ׀ מִכַּ֣ף אֹיְבֵ֗ינוּ וְה֤וּא מִלְּטָ֨נוּ֙ מִכַּ֣ף פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְעַתָּ֛ה בָּרַ֥ח מִן־הָאָ֖רֶץ מֵעַ֥ל אַבְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abeshshalom֙ 'ashshe֣r mashsha֣chenu 'ale֔ynu me֖t bּamּilechama֑h ve'atּa֗h lama֥h 'atּe֛m macharishshi֖ym lehashshi֥yb 'et-hamּeֽleke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: 'Ask the elders of Judah, "Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has reached the king at his quarters?"'

וְאַבְשָׁלוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָשַׁ֣חְנוּ עָלֵ֔ינוּ מֵ֖ת בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְעַתָּ֗ה לָמָ֥ה אַתֶּ֛ם מַחֲרִשִׁ֖ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehamּe֣leke dּavi֗d shsha֠lach 'el-tzad֨oq ve'el-'ebeyata֥r hakּohaniym֮ le'mor֒ dּabּer֞u 'el-ziqene֤y yehudah֙ le'mo֔r la֤mּah tiֽheyu֙ 'aֽcharoni֔ym lehashshi֥yb 'et-hamּe֖leke 'el-bּeyt֑o udebar֙ kּal-yishsera'e֔l bּa֥ 'el-hamּe֖leke 'el-bּeytֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'"You are my relatives, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?"'

וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֗ד שָׁ֠לַח אֶל־צָד֨וֹק וְאֶל־אֶבְיָתָ֥ר הַכֹּהֲנִים֮ לֵאמֹר֒ דַּבְּר֞וּ אֶל־זִקְנֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לָ֤מָּה תִֽהְיוּ֙ אַֽחֲרֹנִ֔ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ וּדְבַר֙ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּ֥א אֶל־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): acha֣y 'atּe֔m 'atzemi֥y ubeshsari֖y 'atּe֑m vela֧mּah tihey֛u 'acharoni֖ym lehashshi֥yb 'et-hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'And say to Amasa, "Are you not my own flesh and blood? May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if from now on you are not the commander of my army in place of Joab."'

אַחַ֣י אַתֶּ֔ם עַצְמִ֥י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י אַתֶּ֑ם וְלָ֧מָּה תִהְי֛וּ אַחֲרֹנִ֖ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): velaֽ'amashsa'֙ tּoֽmer֔u hal֛o 'atzemi֥y ubeshsari֖y 'a֑tּah kּo֣h yaֽ'ashseh-lּi֤y 'elohiym֙ veko֣h yosi֔yp 'im-lo֠ shsar-tzaba֞ tּiheye֧h lepana֛y kּal-hayּami֖ym tּa֥chat yo'aֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He won over the hearts of the men of Judah together, as though they were one man. They sent word to the king, 'Return, you and all your men.'

וְלַֽעֲמָשָׂא֙ תֹּֽמְר֔וּ הֲל֛וֹא עַצְמִ֥י וּבְשָׂרִ֖י אָ֑תָּה כֹּ֣ה יַֽעֲשֶׂה־לִּ֤י אֱלֹהִים֙ וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֔יף אִם־לֹ֠א שַׂר־צָבָ֞א תִּהְיֶ֧ה לְפָנַ֛י כָּל־הַיָּמִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת יוֹאָֽב׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛t 'et-leba֥b kּal-'iyshsh-yehuda֖h kּe'i֣yshsh 'echa֑d vaֽyּishshelechu֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke shsh֥ub 'atּa֖h vekal-'abadeֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king returned and went as far as the Jordan. Now the men of Judah had come to Gilgal to go out and meet the king and bring him across the Jordan.

וַיַּ֛ט אֶת־לְבַ֥ב כָּל־אִישׁ־יְהוּדָ֖ה כְּאִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֑ד וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ שׁ֥וּב אַתָּ֖ה וְכָל־עֲבָדֶֽיךָ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣shshab hamּe֔leke vayּabo֖ 'ad-hayּaredּe֑n viyhuda֞h bּa֣ hagּilegּa֗lah lale֨ket֙ liqera֣'t hamּe֔leke leha'abi֥yr 'et-hamּe֖leke 'et-hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David.

וַיָּ֣שָׁב הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־הַיַּרְדֵּ֑ן וִיהוּדָ֞ה בָּ֣א הַגִּלְגָּ֗לָה לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לְהַעֲבִ֥יר אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayemahe֗r shshime'i֤y ben-gּera'֙ bּen-hayemiyni֔y 'ashshe֖r mibּaֽchuri֑ym vayּe֨red֙ 'im-'i֣yshsh yehuda֔h liqera֖'t hamּe֥leke dּaviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of Saul’s household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan before the king.

וַיְמַהֵ֗ר שִׁמְעִ֤י בֶן־גֵּרָא֙ בֶּן־הַיְמִינִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִבַּֽחוּרִ֑ים וַיֵּ֨רֶד֙ עִם־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה לִקְרַ֖את הַמֶּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִֽד׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lep 'i֣yshsh 'imּo֮ mibּineyamin֒ vetziyba֗ na֚'ar bּe֣yt shsha'֔ul vachame֨shshet 'ashsa֥r bּana֛yv ve'eshseri֥ym 'abada֖yv 'itּ֑o vetzalech֥u hayּaredּe֖n lipene֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They crossed at the ford to take the king’s household over and to do whatever he wished. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king

וְאֶ֨לֶף אִ֣ישׁ עִמּוֹ֮ מִבִּנְיָמִן֒ וְצִיבָ֗א נַ֚עַר בֵּ֣ית שָׁא֔וּל וַחֲמֵ֨שֶׁת עָשָׂ֥ר בָּנָ֛יו וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים עֲבָדָ֖יו אִתּ֑וֹ וְצָלְח֥וּ הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן לִפְנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abera֣h ha'abara֗h laֽ'abiyr֙ 'et-bּe֣yt hamּe֔leke vela'ashs֥ot hatּ֖ob b'ynv bּe'eyna֑yv veshshime'i֣y ben-gּera֗ napal֙ lipene֣y hamּe֔leke bּe'aber֖o bּayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and said to him, 'May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind.'

וְעָבְרָ֣ה הָעֲבָרָ֗ה לַֽעֲבִיר֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת הַטּ֖וֹב בעינו בְּעֵינָ֑יו וְשִׁמְעִ֣י בֶן־גֵּרָ֗א נָפַל֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ בְּעָבְר֖וֹ בַּיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'el-hamּe֗leke 'al-yachashshab-li֣y 'adoniy֮ 'avon֒ ve'al-tּizekּo֗r 'e֚t 'ashshe֣r he'eva֣h 'abedּeka֔ bּayּ֕om 'ashsher-yaׄtza֥ׄ'ׄ 'adoniֽy-hamּe֖leke miyrֽushshala֑im lashs֥um hamּe֖leke 'el-libּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'For I your servant know that I have sinned, and so today I have come here as the first from the tribes of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אַל־יַחֲשָׁב־לִ֣י אֲדֹנִי֮ עָוֺן֒ וְאַל־תִּזְכֹּ֗ר אֵ֚ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֶעֱוָ֣ה עַבְדְּךָ֔ בַּיּ֕וֹם אֲשֶׁר־יָׄצָ֥ׄאׄ אֲדֹנִֽי־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מִירֽוּשָׁלִָ֑ם לָשׂ֥וּם הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־לִבּֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y yada֣ 'abedּeka֔ kּi֖y 'ani֣y chata֑'tiy vehinּeֽh-ba֣'tiy hayּ֗om ri'shshon֙ lekal-bּe֣yt yose֔p lare֕det liqera֖'t 'adoni֥y hamּeֽleke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, 'Shouldn't Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the LORD’S anointed.'

כִּ֚י יָדַ֣ע עַבְדְּךָ֔ כִּ֖י אֲנִ֣י חָטָ֑אתִי וְהִנֵּֽה־בָ֣אתִי הַיּ֗וֹם רִאשׁוֹן֙ לְכָל־בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֔ף לָרֶ֕דֶת לִקְרַ֖את אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'an 'abiyshsha֤y bּen-tzeruyah֙ vayּo֔'mer hata֣chat zo֔'t lo֥ yuma֖t shshime'i֑y kּi֥y qilּe֖l 'et-meshshi֥ycha yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)David replied, 'What does this have to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? What right do you have to oppose me today? Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Don't I know that today I am king over Israel?'

וַיַּ֨עַן אֲבִישַׁ֤י בֶּן־צְרוּיָה֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר הֲתַ֣חַת זֹ֔את לֹ֥א יוּמַ֖ת שִׁמְעִ֑י כִּ֥י קִלֵּ֖ל אֶת־מְשִׁ֥יחַ יְהוָֽה׃ס

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֗d mah-lּi֤y velakem֙ bּene֣y tzeruya֔h kּiy-tiֽheyu-li֥y hayּ֖om leshsata֑n hayּ֗om y֤umat 'iyshsh֙ bּeyishsera'e֔l kּi֚y hal֣o yada֔'etּiy kּi֥y hayּ֖om 'aniy-me֥leke 'al-yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the king said to Shimei, 'You shall not die.' And the king promised him on oath.

Edified Edition (EDE)MephiboshES, Saul’s grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his beard or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶל־שִׁמְעִ֖י לֹ֣א תָמ֑וּת וַיִּשָּׁ֥בַֽע ל֖וֹ הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umepibo֨shshet֙ bּen-shsha'֔ul yara֖d liqera֣'t hamּe֑leke velo'-'ashsa֨h ragela֜yv velo'-'ashsa֣h shsepam֗o ve'et-bּegadayv֙ lo֣ kibּe֔s lemin-hayּom֙ le֣ket hamּe֔leke 'ad-hayּ֖om 'ashsher-bּa֥ beshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, 'Why didn't you go with me, MephiboshES?'

וּמְפִבֹ֨שֶׁת֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל יָרַ֖ד לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְלֹא־עָשָׂ֨ה רַגְלָ֜יו וְלֹא־עָשָׂ֣ה שְׂפָמ֗וֹ וְאֶת־בְּגָדָיו֙ לֹ֣א כִבֵּ֔ס לְמִן־הַיּוֹם֙ לֶ֣כֶת הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ עַד־הַיּ֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥א בְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y kּiy-ba֥ yerushshala֖im liqera֣'t hamּe֑leke vayּo֤'mer lo֙ hamּe֔leke la֛mּah lo'-hala֥ketּa 'imּi֖y mepiyboֽshshet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said, 'My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said, "I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the king." But Ziba my servant betrayed me.'

וַיְהִ֛י כִּי־בָ֥א יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לִקְרַ֣את הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָ֛מָּה לֹא־הָלַ֥כְתָּ עִמִּ֖י מְפִיבֹֽשֶׁת׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'ma֕r 'adoni֥y hamּe֖leke 'abedּi֣y rimּa֑niy kּiֽy-'ama֨r 'abedּeka֜ 'echebּeshshah-lּiy֩ hacham֨or ve'erekּa֤b 'ale֨yha֙ ve'ele֣ke 'et-hamּe֔leke kּi֥y pisּe֖cha 'abedּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel of God; so do whatever you think is best.'

וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַבְדִּ֣י רִמָּ֑נִי כִּֽי־אָמַ֨ר עַבְדְּךָ֜ אֶחְבְּשָׁה־לִּי֩ הַחֲמ֨וֹר וְאֶרְכַּ֤ב עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ וְאֵלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י פִסֵּ֖חַ עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayeragּe֣l bּe'abedּeka֔ 'el-'adoni֖y hamּe֑leke va'doni֤y hamּe֨leke֙ kּemale'a֣ke ha'elohi֔ym va'ashse֥h hatּ֖ob bּe'eyneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'All my grandfather’s descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who eat at your table. So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the king?'

וַיְרַגֵּ֣ל בְּעַבְדְּךָ֔ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַאדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ כְּמַלְאַ֣ךְ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ lo֨ haya֜h kּal-bּe֣yt 'abi֗y kּi֤y 'im-'aneshshey-ma֨vet֙ la'doni֣y hamּe֔leke vatּa֨shshet֙ 'eֽt-'abedּeka֔ bּe'okele֖y shshulechane֑ka umah-yּeshsh-li֥y 'od֙ tzedaqa֔h velize'o֥q '֖od 'el-hamּeֽleke׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The king said to him, 'Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide the land.'

כִּי֩ לֹ֨א הָיָ֜ה כָּל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֗י כִּ֤י אִם־אַנְשֵׁי־מָ֨וֶת֙ לַאדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתָּ֨שֶׁת֙ אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֔ בְּאֹכְלֵ֖י שֻׁלְחָנֶ֑ךָ וּמַה־יֶּשׁ־לִ֥י עוֹד֙ צְדָקָ֔ה וְלִזְעֹ֥ק ע֖וֹד אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lo֙ hamּe֔leke la֛mּah tּedabּe֥r '֖od dּebare֑yka 'ama֕retּiy 'atּa֣h vetziyba֔ tּacheleq֖u 'et-hashsּadeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)MephiboshES said to the king, 'Let him take everything, now that my lord the king has returned home safely.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ לָ֛מָּה תְּדַבֵּ֥ר ע֖וֹד דְּבָרֶ֑יךָ אָמַ֕רְתִּי אַתָּ֣ה וְצִיבָ֔א תַּחְלְק֖וּ אֶת־הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer mepiybo֨shshet֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke gּa֥m 'et-hakּo֖l yiqּa֑ch 'a֠charey 'ashsher-bּa֞ 'adoni֥y hamּe֛lek bּeshshal֖om 'el-bּeytֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Barzillai the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to accompany the king across the Jordan and to help him on his way.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מְפִיבֹ֨שֶׁת֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ גַּ֥ם אֶת־הַכֹּ֖ל יִקָּ֑ח אַ֠חֲרֵי אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֞א אֲדֹנִ֥י הַמֶּ֛לֶך בְּשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־בֵּיתֽוֹ׃ס

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubarezilּay֙ hagּile'adi֔y yara֖d merogeli֑ym vayּa'abo֤r 'et-hamּe֨leke֙ hayּaredּe֔n leshshalּech֖o 'et-byrdn hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Barzillai was very old, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man.

וּבַרְזִלַּי֙ הַגִּלְעָדִ֔י יָרַ֖ד מֵרֹגְלִ֑ים וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר אֶת־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן לְשַׁלְּח֖וֹ אֶת־בירדן הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubarezilּay֙ zaqe֣n me'o֔d bּen-shshemoni֖ym shshana֑h vehֽu'-kilekּa֤l 'et-hamּe֨leke֙ bּeshshiybat֣o bemachana֔yim kּiֽy-'i֛yshsh gּad֥ol h֖u me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king said to Barzillai, 'Cross over with me and stay with me in Jerusalem, and I will provide for you.'

וּבַרְזִלַּי֙ זָקֵ֣ן מְאֹ֔ד בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וְהֽוּא־כִלְכַּ֤ל אֶת־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ בְּשִׁיבָת֣וֹ בְמַחֲנַ֔יִם כִּֽי־אִ֛ישׁ גָּד֥וֹל ה֖וּא מְאֹֽד׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer hamּe֖leke 'el-bּarezilּa֑y 'atּah֙ 'abo֣r 'itּi֔y vekilekּaletּi֥y 'oteka֛ 'imּadi֖y bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Barzillai answered the king, 'How many more years of my life are left, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king?'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־בַּרְזִלָּ֑י אַתָּה֙ עֲבֹ֣ר אִתִּ֔י וְכִלְכַּלְתִּ֥י אֹתְךָ֛ עִמָּדִ֖י בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer bּarezilּa֖y 'el-hamּe֑leke kּamּa֗h yemey֙ shshene֣y chayּa֔y kּiy-'e'ele֥h 'et-hamּe֖leke yerushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is enjoyable and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of male and female singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר בַּרְזִלַּ֖י אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ כַּמָּ֗ה יְמֵי֙ שְׁנֵ֣י חַיַּ֔י כִּי־אֶעֱלֶ֥ה אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-shshemoni֣ym shshanah֩ 'anoki֨y hayּ֜om ha'eda֣ ׀ bּeyn-t֣ob lera֗ 'im-yite'a֤m 'abedּeka֙ 'et-'ashshe֤r 'okal֙ ve'et-'ashshe֣r 'eshshetּe֔h 'im-'eshshema֣ '֔od bּeq֖ol shshari֣ym veshshar֑ot velamּah֩ yiֽheye֨h 'abedּeka֥ 'od֙ lemashsּa֔ 'el-'adoni֖y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Your servant will go a short distance across the Jordan with the king, but why should the king reward me so generously?'

בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִ֣ים שָׁנָה֩ אָנֹכִ֨י הַיּ֜וֹם הַאֵדַ֣ע ׀ בֵּין־ט֣וֹב לְרָ֗ע אִם־יִטְעַ֤ם עַבְדְּךָ֙ אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֤ר אֹכַל֙ וְאֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶשְׁתֶּ֔ה אִם־אֶשְׁמַ֣ע ע֔וֹד בְּק֖וֹל שָׁרִ֣ים וְשָׁר֑וֹת וְלָמָּה֩ יִֽהְיֶ֨ה עַבְדְּךָ֥ עוֹד֙ לְמַשָּׂ֔א אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֖י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּime'a֞t ya'abo֧r 'abedּeka֛ 'et-hayּaredּe֖n 'et-hamּe֑leke vela֨mּah֙ yigemele֣niy hamּe֔leke hagּemula֖h hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town and be buried near the grave of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever you think is best.'

כִּמְעַ֞ט יַעֲבֹ֧ר עַבְדְּךָ֛ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וְלָ֨מָּה֙ יִגְמְלֵ֣נִי הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הַגְּמוּלָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yaֽshshab-na֤ 'abedּeka֙ ve'amu֣t bּe'iyri֔y 'i֛m qe֥ber 'abi֖y ve'imּi֑y vehinּe֣h ׀ 'abedּeka֣ kimeha֗m yaֽ'abor֙ 'im-'adoni֣y hamּe֔leke va'ashseh-l֕o 'e֥t 'ashsher-t֖ob bּe'eyneֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The king said, 'Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever you wish. And anything you desire from me I will do for you.'

יָֽשָׁב־נָ֤א עַבְדְּךָ֙ וְאָמֻ֣ת בְּעִירִ֔י עִ֛ם קֶ֥בֶר אָבִ֖י וְאִמִּ֑י וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ עַבְדְּךָ֣ כִמְהָ֗ם יַֽעֲבֹר֙ עִם־אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַעֲשֵׂה־ל֕וֹ אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־ט֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֗leke 'itּiy֙ ya'abo֣r kּimeha֔m va'aniy֙ 'e'eshseh-lּ֔o 'et-hatּ֖ob bּe'eyne֑yka veko֛l 'ashsher-tּibecha֥r 'ala֖y 'eֽ'eshseh-lּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and gave him his blessing, and Barzillai returned to his home.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אִתִּי֙ יַעֲבֹ֣ר כִּמְהָ֔ם וַאֲנִי֙ אֶעֱשֶׂה־לּ֔וֹ אֶת־הַטּ֖וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־תִּבְחַ֥ר עָלַ֖י אֶֽעֱשֶׂה־לָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'abo֧r kּal-ha'a֛m 'et-hayּaredּe֖n vehamּe֣leke 'aba֑r vayּishshּa֨q hamּe֤leke lebarezilּay֙ vayeba֣rake֔hu vayּa֖shshab limeqomֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel escorted the king across.

וַיַּעֲבֹ֧ר כָּל־הָעָ֛ם אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ עָבָ֑ר וַיִּשַּׁ֨ק הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ לְבַרְזִלַּי֙ וַיְבָ֣רֲכֵ֔הוּ וַיָּ֖שָׁב לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'abo֤r hamּe֨leke֙ hagּilegּa֔lah vekimeha֖n 'aba֣r 'imּ֑o vekal-'a֤m yehudah֙ vy'brv he'ebi֣yru 'et-hamּe֔leke vega֕m chatzi֖y 'a֥m yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Soon all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, 'Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him and his household and all his men across the Jordan?'

וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַגִּלְגָּ֔לָה וְכִמְהָ֖ן עָבַ֣ר עִמּ֑וֹ וְכָל־עַ֤ם יְהוּדָה֙ ויעברו הֶעֱבִ֣ירוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וְגַ֕ם חֲצִ֖י עַ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֛h kּal-'i֥yshsh yishsera'e֖l bּa'i֣ym 'el-hamּe֑leke vayּo'mer֣u 'el-hamּe֡leke madּu'a֩ gּenab֨uka 'ache֜ynu 'i֣yshsh yehuda֗h vayּa'abi֨ru 'et-hamּe֤leke ve'et-bּeyto֙ 'et-hayּaredּe֔n vekal-'aneshshe֥y davi֖d 'imּֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, 'We did this because the king is our close relative. Why are you angry about it? Have we eaten any of the king’s food? Have we taken any gifts for ourselves?'

וְהִנֵּ֛ה כָּל־אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בָּאִ֣ים אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֶל־הַמֶּ֡לֶךְ מַדּוּעַ֩ גְּנָב֨וּךָ אַחֵ֜ינוּ אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּעֲבִ֨רוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ וְאֶת־בֵּיתוֹ֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֥י דָוִ֖ד עִמּֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'an֩ kּal-'i֨yshsh yehuda֜h 'al-'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֗l kּiֽy-qar֤ob hamּe֨leke֙ 'ela֔y vela֤mּah zּeh֙ chara֣h leka֔ 'al-hadּaba֖r hazּe֑h he'ak֤ol 'aka֨lenu֙ min-hamּe֔leke 'im-nishsּe֥'t nishsּa֖ laֽnu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, 'We have ten shares in the king; so we have a greater claim on David than you have. Why then did you ignore us? Weren't we the first to speak of bringing back our king?' But the men of Judah responded even more harshly than the men of Israel.

וַיַּעַן֩ כָּל־אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדָ֜ה עַל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כִּֽי־קָר֤וֹב הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֵלַ֔י וְלָ֤מָּה זֶּה֙ חָרָ֣ה לְךָ֔ עַל־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּ֑ה הֶאָכ֤וֹל אָכַ֨לְנוּ֙ מִן־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אִם־נִשֵּׂ֥את נִשָּׂ֖א לָֽנוּ׃ס

וַיַּ֣עַן אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֩ אֶת־אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדָ֜ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֶֽשֶׂר־יָד֨וֹת לִ֣י בַמֶּלֶךְ֮ וְגַם־בְּדָוִד֮ אֲנִ֣י מִמְּךָ֒ וּמַדּ֨וּעַ֙ הֱקִלֹּתַ֔נִי וְלֹא־הָיָ֨ה דְבָרִ֥י רִאשׁ֛וֹן לִ֖י לְהָשִׁ֣יב אֶת־מַלְכִּ֑י וַיִּ֨קֶשׁ֙ דְּבַר־אִ֣ישׁ יְהוּדָ֔ה מִדְּבַ֖ר אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס
