Chapter 2
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y 'aֽcharey-ke֗n vayּishshe'al֩ dּavi֨d bּaֽyhva֤h ׀ le'mor֙ ha'e'ele֗h bּe'achat֙ 'are֣y yehuda֔h vayּo֧'mer yehva֛h 'ela֖yv 'ale֑h vayּo֧'mer dּavi֛d 'a֥nah 'e'ele֖h vayּo֥'mer cheberoֽnah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Later, David asked the LORD, 'Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah?' the LORD said to him, 'Go up.' David asked, 'Where shall I go?' and the LORD said, 'To Hebron.'

וַיְהִ֣י אַֽחֲרֵי־כֵ֗ן וַיִּשְׁאַל֩ דָּוִ֨ד בַּֽיהוָ֤ה ׀ לֵאמֹר֙ הַאֶעֱלֶ֗ה בְּאַחַת֙ עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֧אמֶר יְהוָ֛ה אֵלָ֖יו עֲלֵ֑ה וַיֹּ֧אמֶר דָּוִ֛ד אָ֥נָה אֶעֱלֶ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר חֶבְרֹֽנָה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'al shsham֙ dּavi֔d vega֖m shshetּe֣y nashsha֑yv 'achiyno֨'am֙ hayּizere'eli֔yt va'abiyga֕yil 'e֖shshet naba֥l haֽkּaremeliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So David went up there with his two wives, Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.

וַיַּ֤עַל שָׁם֙ דָּוִ֔ד וְגַ֖ם שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשָׁ֑יו אֲחִינֹ֨עַם֙ הַיִּזְרְעֵלִ֔ית וַאֲבִיגַ֕יִל אֵ֖שֶׁת נָבָ֥ל הַֽכַּרְמְלִֽי׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'anashsha֧yv 'ashsher-'imּ֛o he'ela֥h davi֖d 'i֣yshsh ubeyt֑o vayּeshsheb֖u bּe'are֥y cheberֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David also brought the men who were with him, each with his household, and they lived in the towns around Hebron.

וַאֲנָשָׁ֧יו אֲשֶׁר־עִמּ֛וֹ הֶעֱלָ֥ה דָוִ֖ד אִ֣ישׁ וּבֵית֑וֹ וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ בְּעָרֵ֥י חֶבְרֽוֹן׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨'u֙ 'aneshshe֣y yehuda֔h vayּimeshshechu-shsha֧m 'et-dּavi֛d leme֖leke 'al-bּe֣yt yehuda֑h vayּagּi֤du ledavid֙ le'mo֔r 'aneshshey֙ yabe֣yshsh gּile'a֔d 'ashshe֥r qaber֖u 'et-shsha'ֽul׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. They told David that it was the men of Jabesh-gilead who had buried Saul.

וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיִּמְשְׁחוּ־שָׁ֧ם אֶת־דָּוִ֛ד לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיַּגִּ֤דוּ לְדָוִד֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַנְשֵׁי֙ יָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֔ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר קָבְר֖וּ אֶת־שָׁאֽוּל׃ס

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch dּavid֙ male'aki֔ym 'el-'aneshshe֖y yabe֣yshsh gּile'a֑d vayּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֗m bּeruki֤ym 'atּem֙ laֽyhva֔h 'ashshe֨r 'ashsiyte֜m hache֣sed hazּe֗h 'im-'adoֽneykem֙ 'im-shsha'֔ul vaֽtּiqebּer֖u 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, 'May the LORD bless you for showing this kindness to Saul your lord by burying him.'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח דָּוִד֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־אַנְשֵׁ֖י יָבֵ֣ישׁ גִּלְעָ֑ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם בְּרֻכִ֤ים אַתֶּם֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֜ם הַחֶ֣סֶד הַזֶּ֗ה עִם־אֲדֹֽנֵיכֶם֙ עִם־שָׁא֔וּל וַֽתִּקְבְּר֖וּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֕h yaֽ'ashs-yehva֥h 'imּake֖m che֣sed ve'eme֑t vega֣m 'anoki֗y 'e'eshse֤h 'itּekem֙ hatּoba֣h hazּo֔'t 'ashshe֥r 'ashsiyte֖m hadּaba֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'May the LORD now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I also will reward you for this good deed.'

וְעַתָּ֕ה יַֽעַשׂ־יְהוָ֥ה עִמָּכֶ֖ם חֶ֣סֶד וֶאֱמֶ֑ת וְגַ֣ם אָנֹכִ֗י אֶעֱשֶׂ֤ה אִתְּכֶם֙ הַטּוֹבָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h ׀ tּecheza֣qenah yedeyke֗m viֽheyu֙ libeney-cha֔yil kּiy-me֖t 'adoneyke֣m shsha'֑ul vegam-'oti֗y mashshech֧u beyt-yehuda֛h leme֖leke 'aleyheֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your lord is dead, and the house of Judah has anointed me as their king.'

וְעַתָּ֣ה ׀ תֶּחֱזַ֣קְנָה יְדֵיכֶ֗ם וִֽהְיוּ֙ לִבְנֵי־חַ֔יִל כִּי־מֵ֖ת אֲדֹנֵיכֶ֣ם שָׁא֑וּל וְגַם־אֹתִ֗י מָשְׁח֧וּ בֵית־יְהוּדָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abene֣r bּen-ne֔r shsar-tzaba֖ 'ashshe֣r leshsha'֑ul laqa֗ch 'et-'i֥yshsh bּo֨shshet֙ bּen-shsha'֔ul vayּa'abire֖hu machanaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Abner son of Ner, commander of Saul's army, had taken Ish-boshes son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

וְאַבְנֵ֣ר בֶּן־נֵ֔ר שַׂר־צָבָ֖א אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְשָׁא֑וּל לָקַ֗ח אֶת־אִ֥ישׁ בֹּ֨שֶׁת֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל וַיַּעֲבִרֵ֖הוּ מַחֲנָֽיִם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּamelike֨hu֙ 'el-hagּile'a֔d ve'el-ha'ashshuri֖y ve'eֽl-yizere'e֑'l ve'al-'epera֨yim֙ ve'al-bּineyami֔n ve'al-yishsera'e֖l kּulּoֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)He made him king over Gilead, Ashuri, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin, and all Israel.

וַיַּמְלִכֵ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־הַגִּלְעָ֔ד וְאֶל־הָאֲשׁוּרִ֖י וְאֶֽל־יִזְרְעֶ֑אל וְעַל־אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ וְעַל־בִּנְיָמִ֔ן וְעַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כֻּלֹּֽה׃פ

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'arebּa'i֨ym shshana֜h 'iֽyshsh-bּo֣shshet bּen-shsha'֗ul bּemaleko֙ 'al-yishsera'e֔l ushshetּa֥yim shshani֖ym mala֑ke 'a֚ke bּe֣yt yehuda֔h hay֖u 'achare֥y daviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ish-boshes son of Saul was forty years old when he became king over Israel, and he reigned for two years. But the house of Judah followed David.

בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִ֨ים שָׁנָ֜ה אִֽישׁ־בֹּ֣שֶׁת בֶּן־שָׁא֗וּל בְּמָלְכוֹ֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וּשְׁתַּ֥יִם שָׁנִ֖ים מָלָ֑ךְ אַ֚ךְ בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֔ה הָי֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י דָוִֽד׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ misepּa֣r hayּami֔ym 'ashsher֩ haya֨h davi֥d me֛leke bּecheber֖on 'al-bּe֣yt yehuda֑h shshe֥ba shshani֖ym veshshishshּa֥h chodashshiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The time David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִסְפַּ֣ר הַיָּמִ֔ים אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיָ֨ה דָוִ֥ד מֶ֛לֶךְ בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן עַל־בֵּ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֙ 'abene֣r bּen-ne֔r ve'abede֖y 'iֽyshsh-bּo֣shshet bּen-shsha'֑ul miֽmּachana֖yim gּibe'ֽonah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner son of Ner and the servants of Ish-boshes son of Saul went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ אַבְנֵ֣ר בֶּן־נֵ֔ר וְעַבְדֵ֖י אִֽישׁ־בֹּ֣שֶׁת בֶּן־שָׁא֑וּל מִֽמַּחֲנַ֖יִם גִּבְעֽוֹנָה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyo'a֨b bּen-tzeruya֜h ve'abede֤y david֙ yaֽtze'֔u vaֽyּipegּeshsh֛um 'al-bּereka֥t gּibe'֖on yachedּa֑v vayּe֨shsheb֜u 'e֤lּeh 'al-habּerekah֙ mizּe֔h ve'e֥lּeh 'al-habּereka֖h mizּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab son of Zeruiah and David’s servants also went out and met them by the pool of Gibeon. The two groups sat down, one on one side of the pool and one on the other.

וְיוֹאָ֨ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֜ה וְעַבְדֵ֤י דָוִד֙ יָֽצְא֔וּ וַֽיִּפְגְּשׁ֛וּם עַל־בְּרֵכַ֥ת גִּבְע֖וֹן יַחְדָּ֑ו וַיֵּ֨שְׁב֜וּ אֵ֤לֶּה עַל־הַבְּרֵכָה֙ מִזֶּ֔ה וְאֵ֥לֶּה עַל־הַבְּרֵכָ֖ה מִזֶּֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'abener֙ 'el-yo'a֔b yaq֤umu na'֙ hanּe'ari֔ym viֽyshsachaq֖u lepane֑ynu vayּo֥'mer yo'a֖b yaquֽmu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner said to Joab, 'Let some of the young men stand up and compete before us.' Joab said, 'Let them stand up.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַבְנֵר֙ אֶל־יוֹאָ֔ב יָק֤וּמוּ נָא֙ הַנְּעָרִ֔ים וִֽישַׂחֲק֖וּ לְפָנֵ֑ינוּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יוֹאָ֖ב יָקֻֽמוּ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqu֖mu vayּa'aber֣u bemisepּa֑r shshene֧ym 'ashsa֣r lebineyami֗n ule'i֥yshsh bּo֨shshet֙ bּen-shsha'֔ul ushshene֥ym 'ashsa֖r me'abede֥y daviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they stood up and were counted off, twelve for Benjamin and Ish-boshes son of Saul, and twelve for David’s servants.

וַיָּקֻ֖מוּ וַיַּעַבְר֣וּ בְמִסְפָּ֑ר שְׁנֵ֧ים עָשָׂ֣ר לְבִנְיָמִ֗ן וּלְאִ֥ישׁ בֹּ֨שֶׁת֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל וּשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר מֵעַבְדֵ֥י דָוִֽד׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּachazi֜qu 'i֣yshsh ׀ bּero֣'shsh re'e֗hu vecharebּo֙ bּetza֣d re'e֔hu vaֽyּipּel֖u yachedּa֑v vayּiqera'֙ lamּaq֣om hah֔u cheleqa֥t hatzּuri֖ym 'ashshe֥r bּegibe'ֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Each man grabbed his opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his side, and they fell down together. So that place in Gibeon was called Helkath-hazzurim.

וַֽיַּחֲזִ֜קוּ אִ֣ישׁ ׀ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ רֵעֵ֗הוּ וְחַרְבּוֹ֙ בְּצַ֣ד רֵעֵ֔הוּ וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ יַחְדָּ֑ו וַיִּקְרָא֙ לַמָּק֣וֹם הַה֔וּא חֶלְקַ֥ת הַצֻּרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּגִבְעֽוֹן׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֧y hamּilechama֛h qashsha֥h 'ad-me'o֖d bּayּ֣om hah֑u vayּinּa֤gep 'abener֙ ve'aneshshe֣y yishsera'e֔l lipene֖y 'abede֥y daviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The battle that day was very fierce, and Abner and the men of Israel were defeated by David’s servants.

וַתְּהִ֧י הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה קָשָׁ֥ה עַד־מְאֹ֖ד בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וַיִּנָּ֤גֶף אַבְנֵר֙ וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִפְנֵ֖י עַבְדֵ֥י דָוִֽד׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽheyu-shsha֗m shsheloshshah֙ bּene֣y tzeruya֔h yo'a֥b va'abiyshsha֖y va'ashsah'e֑l va'ashsah'el֙ qa֣l bּeragela֔yv kּe'acha֥d hatzּebayi֖m 'ashshe֥r bּashsּadeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The three sons of Zeruiah were there: Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel was as fast-footed as a wild gazelle.

וַיִּֽהְיוּ־שָׁ֗ם שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ בְּנֵ֣י צְרוּיָ֔ה יוֹאָ֥ב וַאֲבִישַׁ֖י וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֑ל וַעֲשָׂהאֵל֙ קַ֣ל בְּרַגְלָ֔יו כְּאַחַ֥ד הַצְּבָיִ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiredּo֥p 'ashsah'e֖l 'achare֣y 'abene֑r veloֽ'-nata֣h lale֗ket 'al-hayּamiyn֙ ve'aֽl-hashsּemo֔'vl me'achare֖y 'abeneֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Asahel chased Abner, turning neither to the right nor to the left as he followed him.

וַיִּרְדֹּ֥ף עֲשָׂהאֵ֖ל אַחֲרֵ֣י אַבְנֵ֑ר וְלֹֽא־נָטָ֣ה לָלֶ֗כֶת עַל־הַיָּמִין֙ וְעַֽל־הַשְּׂמֹ֔אול מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י אַבְנֵֽר׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤pen 'abener֙ 'aֽchara֔yv vayּo֕'mer ha'atּa֥h ze֖h 'ashsah'e֑l vayּo֖'mer 'anoֽkiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner looked behind him and asked, 'Is that you, Asahel?' He answered, 'It is.'

וַיִּ֤פֶן אַבְנֵר֙ אַֽחֲרָ֔יו וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה עֲשָׂהאֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָנֹֽכִי׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer l֣o 'abene֗r nete֤h leka֙ 'al-yemiֽyneka֙ '֣o 'al-shsemo'le֔ka ve'echo֣z leka֗ 'echad֙ meֽhanּe'ari֔ym veqach-leka֖ 'et-chalitzat֑o veloֽ'-'aba֣h 'ashsah'e֔l las֖ur me'acharaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner said to him, 'Turn aside to your right or to your left; catch one of the young men and take his equipment for yourself.' But Asahel would not stop chasing him.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ אַבְנֵ֗ר נְטֵ֤ה לְךָ֙ עַל־יְמִֽינְךָ֙ א֣וֹ עַל־שְׂמֹאלֶ֔ךָ וֶאֱחֹ֣ז לְךָ֗ אֶחָד֙ מֵֽהַנְּעָרִ֔ים וְקַח־לְךָ֖ אֶת־חֲלִצָת֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־אָבָ֣ה עֲשָׂהאֵ֔ל לָס֖וּר מֵאַחֲרָֽיו׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧sep '֣od 'abene֗r le'mor֙ 'el-'ashsah'e֔l s֥ur leka֖ me'aֽchara֑y la֤mּah 'akּe֨kּah֙ 'a֔retzah ve'eyke֙ 'eshsּa֣ pana֔y 'el-yo'a֖b 'achiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner warned Asahel again, 'Stop chasing me! Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I then look your brother Joab in the face?'

וַיֹּ֧סֶף ע֣וֹד אַבְנֵ֗ר לֵאמֹר֙ אֶל־עֲשָׂהאֵ֔ל ס֥וּר לְךָ֖ מֵאַֽחֲרָ֑י לָ֤מָּה אַכֶּ֨כָּה֙ אַ֔רְצָה וְאֵיךְ֙ אֶשָּׂ֣א פָנַ֔י אֶל־יוֹאָ֖ב אָחִֽיךָ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema'e֣n las֗ur vayּakּe֣hu 'abener֩ bּe'achare֨y hachani֜yt 'el-hacho֗meshsh vatּetze֤ haֽchaniyt֙ me'achara֔yv vayּipּal-shsha֖m vayּa֣mat tchtv tּachetּa֑yv vayehi֡y kּal-habּa֣ 'eֽl-hamּaqom֩ 'ashsher-na֨pal shsha֧m 'ashsah'e֛l vayּamo֖t vaֽyּa'amoֽdu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But he refused to turn aside, so Abner struck him in the stomach with the butt of his spear, and the spear came out through his back. He fell there and died on the spot. And everyone stopped when they came to the place where Asahel had fallen and died.

וַיְמָאֵ֣ן לָס֗וּר וַיַּכֵּ֣הוּ אַבְנֵר֩ בְּאַחֲרֵ֨י הַחֲנִ֜ית אֶל־הַחֹ֗מֶשׁ וַתֵּצֵ֤א הַֽחֲנִית֙ מֵאַחֲרָ֔יו וַיִּפָּל־שָׁ֖ם וַיָּ֣מָת תחתו תַּחְתָּ֑יו וַיְהִ֡י כָּל־הַבָּ֣א אֶֽל־הַמָּקוֹם֩ אֲשֶׁר־נָ֨פַל שָׁ֧ם עֲשָׂהאֵ֛ל וַיָּמֹ֖ת וַֽיַּעֲמֹֽדוּ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּiredּep֛u yo'a֥b va'abiyshsha֖y 'achare֣y 'abene֑r vehashshּe֣meshsh bּa֔'ah vehe֗mּah bּa֚'u 'ad-gּibe'a֣t 'amּa֔h 'ashsher֙ 'al-pּeney-gi֔ycha dּe֖reke midebּa֥r gּibe'ֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab and Abishai also chased Abner. As the sun was setting, they came to the hill of Ammah, which faces Giah on the way to the wilderness of Gibeon.

וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֛וּ יוֹאָ֥ב וַאֲבִישַׁ֖י אַחֲרֵ֣י אַבְנֵ֑ר וְהַשֶּׁ֣מֶשׁ בָּ֔אָה וְהֵ֗מָּה בָּ֚אוּ עַד־גִּבְעַ֣ת אַמָּ֔ה אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־פְּנֵי־גִ֔יחַ דֶּ֖רֶךְ מִדְבַּ֥ר גִּבְעֽוֹן׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽteqabּetz֤u beneֽy-bineyamin֙ 'achare֣y 'abene֔r vayּihey֖u la'agudּa֣h 'echa֑t vayּa֣'amed֔u 'a֥l ro'shsh-gּibe'a֖h 'echaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men of Benjamin gathered behind Abner and formed a single group, taking their stand on top of a hill.

וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִן֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י אַבְנֵ֔ר וַיִּהְי֖וּ לַאֲגֻדָּ֣ה אֶחָ֑ת וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ עַ֥ל רֹאשׁ־גִּבְעָ֖ה אֶחָֽת׃

26

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abner called out to Joab, 'Must the sword devour forever? Don't you realise that this will end in bitterness? How long before you tell the people to stop chasing their brothers?'

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אַבְנֵ֜ר אֶל־יוֹאָ֗ב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הֲלָנֶ֨צַח֙ תֹּ֣אכַל חֶ֔רֶב הֲל֣וֹא יָדַ֔עְתָּה כִּֽי־מָרָ֥ה תִהְיֶ֖ה בָּאַחֲרוֹנָ֑ה וְעַד־מָתַי֙ לֹֽא־תֹאמַ֣ר לָעָ֔ם לָשׁ֖וּב מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yo'a֔b cha֚y haֽ'elohi֔ym kּi֥y lule֖ dּibּa֑retּa kּi֣y 'a֤z meֽhabּo֨qer֙ na'ala֣h ha'a֔m 'i֖yshsh me'achare֥y 'achiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab answered, 'As surely as God lives, if you hadn't spoken, the men would have continued the pursuit until morning.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יוֹאָ֔ב חַ֚י הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים כִּ֥י לוּלֵ֖א דִּבַּ֑רְתָּ כִּ֣י אָ֤ז מֵֽהַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ נַעֲלָ֣ה הָעָ֔ם אִ֖ישׁ מֵאַחֲרֵ֥י אָחִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiteqa֤ yo'ab֙ bּashshּopa֔r vayּaֽ'amedu֙ kּal-ha'a֔m veloֽ'-yiredּep֥u '֖od 'achare֣y yishsera'e֑l veloֽ'-yasep֥u '֖od lehilּacheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Joab blew the trumpet, and all the people stopped; they no longer pursued Israel nor fought any more.

וַיִּתְקַ֤ע יוֹאָב֙ בַּשּׁוֹפָ֔ר וַיַּֽעַמְדוּ֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם וְלֹֽא־יִרְדְּפ֥וּ ע֖וֹד אַחֲרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹֽא־יָסְפ֥וּ ע֖וֹד לְהִלָּחֵֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abene֣r vaֽ'anashsha֗yv haֽleku֙ bּaֽ'araba֔h kּo֖l halּa֣yelah hah֑u vayּa'aber֣u 'et-hayּaredּe֗n vayּeֽleku֙ kּal-habּiter֔on vayּabo֖'u machanaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abner and his men marched through the plain all that night; they crossed the Jordan, went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

וְאַבְנֵ֣ר וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֗יו הָֽלְכוּ֙ בָּֽעֲרָבָ֔ה כֹּ֖ל הַלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֑וּא וַיַּעַבְר֣וּ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֗ן וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ כָּל־הַבִּתְר֔וֹן וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ מַחֲנָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyo'a֗b shsha֚b me'achare֣y 'abene֔r vayּiqebּo֖tz 'et-kּal-ha'a֑m vayּipּa֨qed֜u me'abede֥y davi֛d tּishshe'aֽh-'ashsa֥r 'i֖yshsh va'ashsah-'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab returned from chasing Abner and gathered all the people. Nineteen of David’s servants were missing besides Asahel.

וְיוֹאָ֗ב שָׁ֚ב מֵאַחֲרֵ֣י אַבְנֵ֔ר וַיִּקְבֹּ֖ץ אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֑ם וַיִּפָּ֨קְד֜וּ מֵעַבְדֵ֥י דָוִ֛ד תִּשְׁעָֽה־עָשָׂ֥ר אִ֖ישׁ וַעֲשָׂה־אֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abede֣y davi֗d hikּu֙ mibּineyami֔n ube'aneshshe֖y 'abene֑r shsheloshsh-me'֧ot veshshishshּi֛ym 'i֖yshsh meֽtu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But David’s servants had killed three hundred and sixty men of Benjamin and Abner's men.

וְעַבְדֵ֣י דָוִ֗ד הִכּוּ֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן וּבְאַנְשֵׁ֖י אַבְנֵ֑ר שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵא֧וֹת וְשִׁשִּׁ֛ים אִ֖ישׁ מֵֽתוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishse'u֙ 'et-'ashsah'e֔l vaֽyּiqebּeru֨hu֙ bּeqe֣ber 'abi֔yv 'ashshe֖r bּe֣yt la֑chem vayּelek֣u kal-halּa֗yelah yo'ab֙ vaֽ'anashsha֔yv vayּe'o֥r lahe֖m bּecheberֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They took Asahel and buried him in his father’s tomb at Bethlehem. Then Joab and his men marched all night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.

וַיִּשְׂאוּ֙ אֶת־עֲשָׂהאֵ֔ל וַֽיִּקְבְּרֻ֨הוּ֙ בְּקֶ֣בֶר אָבִ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֖ר בֵּ֣ית לָ֑חֶם וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ כָל־הַלַּ֗יְלָה יוֹאָב֙ וַֽאֲנָשָׁ֔יו וַיֵּאֹ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם בְּחֶבְרֽוֹן׃
