Chapter 23

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛lּeh dּibere֥y davi֖d ha'aֽcharoni֑ym ne'u֧m dּavi֣d bּen-yishsha֗y une'u֤m hagּe֨ber֙ hu֣qam 'a֔l meshshi֨ycha֙ 'elohe֣y yaֽ'aqo֔b une'i֖ym zemir֥ot yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)These are the last words of David: 'The oracle of David son of Jesse, the oracle of the man exalted by the Most High, the man anointed by the God of Jacob, Israel’s beloved singer of songs:'

וְאֵ֛לֶּה דִּבְרֵ֥י דָוִ֖ד הָאַֽחֲרֹנִ֑ים נְאֻ֧ם דָּוִ֣ד בֶּן־יִשַׁ֗י וּנְאֻ֤ם הַגֶּ֨בֶר֙ הֻ֣קַם עָ֔ל מְשִׁ֨יחַ֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב וּנְעִ֖ים זְמִר֥וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): r֥ucha yehva֖h dּibּer-bּi֑y umilּat֖o 'al-leshshoniֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'The Spirit of the LORD spoke through me; his word was on my tongue.'

ר֥וּחַ יְהוָ֖ה דִּבֶּר־בִּ֑י וּמִלָּת֖וֹ עַל־לְשׁוֹנִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): amar֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l li֥y dibּe֖r tz֣ur yishsera'e֑l moshshel֙ bּa'ada֔m tzadּi֕yq moshshe֖l yire'a֥t 'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'The God of Israel spoke, the Rock of Israel said to me: "When one rules over people in righteousness, when he rules in the fear of God,"'

אָמַר֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לִ֥י דִבֶּ֖ר צ֣וּר יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל מוֹשֵׁל֙ בָּאָדָ֔ם צַדִּ֕יק מוֹשֵׁ֖ל יִרְאַ֥ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uke'֥or bּo֖qer yizerach-shsha֑meshsh bּo֚qer lo֣ 'ab֔ot minּo֥gahּ mimּata֖r dּe֥shshe me'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'"he is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth."'

וּכְא֥וֹר בֹּ֖קֶר יִזְרַח־שָׁ֑מֶשׁ בֹּ֚קֶר לֹ֣א עָב֔וֹת מִנֹּ֥גַהּ מִמָּטָ֖ר דֶּ֥שֶׁא מֵאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-lo'-ke֥n bּeyti֖y 'im-'e֑l kּiy֩ beri֨yt 'ola֜m shsa֣m li֗y 'aruka֤h bakּol֙ ushshemura֔h kּiֽy-kal-yishshe'i֥y vekal-che֖petz kּiֽy-lo֥ yatzemiֽycha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'If my house were not right with God, surely he would not have made with me an everlasting covenant, arranged and secured in every part. Will he not bring to fruition my salvation and grant me my every desire?'

כִּֽי־לֹא־כֵ֥ן בֵּיתִ֖י עִם־אֵ֑ל כִּי֩ בְרִ֨ית עוֹלָ֜ם שָׂ֣ם לִ֗י עֲרוּכָ֤ה בַכֹּל֙ וּשְׁמֻרָ֔ה כִּֽי־כָל־יִשְׁעִ֥י וְכָל־חֵ֖פֶץ כִּֽי־לֹ֥א יַצְמִֽיחַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeliyּa֕'al kּeq֥otz muna֖d kּulּa֑ham kּiֽy-lo֥ beya֖d yiqּaֽchu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'But evil people are all like thorns thrown aside, which are not gathered with the hand.'

וּבְלִיַּ֕עַל כְּק֥וֹץ מֻנָ֖ד כֻּלָּ֑הַם כִּֽי־לֹ֥א בְיָ֖ד יִקָּֽחוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'iyshsh֙ yigּa֣ bּahe֔m yimּale֥ bareze֖l ve'e֣tz chani֑yt uba'e֕shsh shsar֥op yishsּarep֖u bּashshּaֽbet׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)'Whoever touches thorns must use a tool of iron or the shaft of a spear; they are burned up where they lie.'

וְאִישׁ֙ יִגַּ֣ע בָּהֶ֔ם יִמָּלֵ֥א בַרְזֶ֖ל וְעֵ֣ץ חֲנִ֑ית וּבָאֵ֕שׁ שָׂר֥וֹף יִשָּׂרְפ֖וּ בַּשָּֽׁבֶת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֛lּeh shshem֥ot hagּibּori֖ym 'ashshe֣r ledavi֑d yoshshe֨b bּashshּe֜bet tּachekּemoni֣y ׀ ro֣'shsh hashshּalishshi֗y h֚u 'adiyn֣o h'tznv haֽ'etzeni֔y 'al-shshemone֥h me'֛ot chala֖l bּepa֥'am 'chd 'echaֽt׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)These are the names of David’s mighty warriors: Josheb-BasshebS, a Tahkemonite, was chief of the Three; he wielded his spear against eight hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.

אֵ֛לֶּה שְׁמ֥וֹת הַגִּבֹּרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְדָוִ֑ד יֹשֵׁ֨ב בַּשֶּׁ֜בֶת תַּחְכְּמֹנִ֣י ׀ רֹ֣אשׁ הַשָּׁלִשִׁ֗י ה֚וּא עֲדִינ֣וֹ העצנו הָֽעֶצְנִ֔י עַל־שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה מֵא֛וֹת חָלָ֖ל בְּפַ֥עַם אחד אֶחָֽת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): v'chrv ve'achara֛yv 'ele'aza֥r bּen-ddy dּod֖o bּen-'achochi֑y bּishsheloshsha֨h gbrym hagּibּori֜ym 'im-dּavi֗d bּechaֽrepa֤m bּapּelishshetּiym ne'esepu-shsha֣m lamּilechama֔h vaֽyּa'al֖u 'i֥yshsh yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai the Ahohite. As one of the three mighty warriors, he was with David when they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the Israelites retreated,

ואחרו וְאַחֲרָ֛יו אֶלְעָזָ֥ר בֶּן־דדי דֹּד֖וֹ בֶּן־אֲחֹחִ֑י בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה גברים הַגִּבֹּרִ֜ים עִם־דָּוִ֗ד בְּחָֽרְפָ֤ם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים נֶאֶסְפוּ־שָׁ֣ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): h֣u qam֩ vayּa֨ke bּapּelishshetּi֜ym 'a֣d ׀ kּiֽy-yage'a֣h yad֗o vatּidebּa֤q yado֙ 'el-hache֔reb vayּa֧'ashs yehva֛h tּeshshu'a֥h gedola֖h bּayּ֣om hah֑u veha'a֛m yashshu֥bu 'achara֖yv 'ake-lepashshּeֽt׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)but Eleazar stood his ground and struck down the Philistines till his hand grew weary and froze to the sword. the LORD brought about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to strip the dead.

ה֣וּא קָם֩ וַיַּ֨ךְ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים עַ֣ד ׀ כִּֽי־יָגְעָ֣ה יָד֗וֹ וַתִּדְבַּ֤ק יָדוֹ֙ אֶל־הַחֶ֔רֶב וַיַּ֧עַשׂ יְהוָ֛ה תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה גְדוֹלָ֖ה בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וְהָעָ֛ם יָשֻׁ֥בוּ אַחֲרָ֖יו אַךְ־לְפַשֵּֽׁט׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'achara֛yv shshamּa֥ ben-'age֖ harari֑y vayּe'asep֨u pelishshetּi֜ym lachayּa֗h vatּehiy-shsha֞m cheleqa֤t hashsּadeh֙ mele'a֣h 'adashshi֔ym veha'a֥m na֖s mipּene֥y pelishshetּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Next to him was Shammah son of Agee the Hararite. When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them.

וְאַחֲרָ֛יו שַׁמָּ֥א בֶן־אָגֵ֖א הָרָרִ֑י וַיֵּאָסְפ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים לַחַיָּ֗ה וַתְּהִי־שָׁ֞ם חֶלְקַ֤ת הַשָּׂדֶה֙ מְלֵאָ֣ה עֲדָשִׁ֔ים וְהָעָ֥ם נָ֖ס מִפְּנֵ֥י פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiteyatzּe֤b bּetoke-haֽcheleqah֙ vayּatzּiyle֔ha vayּa֖ke 'et-pּelishshetּi֑ym vayּa֥'ashs yehva֖h tּeshshu'a֥h gedolaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)But Shammah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.

וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֤ב בְּתוֹךְ־הַֽחֶלְקָה֙ וַיַּצִּילֶ֔הָ וַיַּ֖ךְ אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּ֥עַשׂ יְהוָ֖ה תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּered֨u shlshym shsheloshsha֜h mehashshּeloshshi֣ym ro֗'shsh vayּabo֤'u 'el-qatziyr֙ 'el-dּavi֔d 'el-me'ara֖t 'adulּa֑m vechayּa֣t pּelishshetּi֔ym chona֖h bּe'e֥meq repa'iֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)During harvest time, three of the thirty chief warriors came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

וַיֵּרְד֨וּ שלשים שְׁלֹשָׁ֜ה מֵהַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֣ים רֹ֗אשׁ וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ אֶל־קָצִיר֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד אֶל־מְעָרַ֖ת עֲדֻלָּ֑ם וְחַיַּ֣ת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים חֹנָ֖ה בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֖d 'a֣z bּamּetzuda֑h umatzּa֣b pּelishshetּi֔ym 'a֖z bּe֥yt laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At that time David was in the stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem.

וְדָוִ֖ד אָ֣ז בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה וּמַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אָ֖ז בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּite'aue֥h davi֖d vayּo'ma֑r mi֚y yashsheqe֣niy ma֔yim mibּo֥'r bּeֽyt-le֖chem 'ashshe֥r bּashshּaֽ'ar׃

Edified Edition (EDE)David longed for water and said, 'Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from the well [1] near the gate of Bethlehem!'

וַיִּתְאַוֶּ֥ה דָוִ֖ד וַיֹּאמַ֑ר מִ֚י יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי מַ֔יִם מִבֹּ֥אר בֵּֽית־לֶ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּibeqe'u֩ shshelo֨shshet hagּibּori֜ym bּemachane֣h pelishshetּi֗ym vayּiֽshshe'abu-ma֨yim֙ mibּo֤'r bּeֽyt-le֨chem֙ 'ashshe֣r bּashshּa֔'ar vayּishse'֖u vayּabi֣'u 'el-dּavi֑d velo֤ 'abah֙ lishshetּota֔m vayּasּe֥ke 'ota֖m laֽyhvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the three mighty warriors broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD.

וַיִּבְקְעוּ֩ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת הַגִּבֹּרִ֜ים בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־מַ֨יִם֙ מִבֹּ֤אר בֵּֽית־לֶ֨חֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשַּׁ֔עַר וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ וַיָּבִ֣אוּ אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד וְלֹ֤א אָבָה֙ לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם וַיַּסֵּ֥ךְ אֹתָ֖ם לַֽיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֡'mer chaliylah֩ lּi֨y yehva֜h me'ashso֣tiy zo֗'t hada֤m haֽ'anashshiym֙ haholeki֣ym bּenapeshshota֔m velo֥ 'aba֖h lishshetּota֑m 'e֣lּeh 'ashs֔u shshelo֖shshet hagּibּoriֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)'Far be it from me, the LORD, to do this!' he said. 'Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their lives?' And David would not drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty warriors.

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר חָלִילָה֩ לִּ֨י יְהוָ֜ה מֵעֲשֹׂ֣תִי זֹ֗את הֲדַ֤ם הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ הַהֹלְכִ֣ים בְּנַפְשׁוֹתָ֔ם וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑ם אֵ֣לֶּה עָשׂ֔וּ שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abiyshsha֞y 'achi֣y ׀ yo'a֣b bּen-tzeruya֗h h֚u ro֣'shsh hshlshy hashshּeloshsha֔h vehu'֙ 'ore֣r 'et-chaniyt֔o 'al-shshelo֥shsh me'֖ot chala֑l velo-shshe֖m bּashshּeloshshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abishai the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was chief of the Three. He wielded his spear against three hundred men, whom he killed, and so he became as famous as the Three.

וַאֲבִישַׁ֞י אֲחִ֣י ׀ יוֹאָ֣ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֗ה ה֚וּא רֹ֣אשׁ השלשי הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֔ה וְהוּא֙ עוֹרֵ֣ר אֶת־חֲנִית֔וֹ עַל־שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת חָלָ֑ל וְלוֹ־שֵׁ֖ם בַּשְּׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): min-hashshּeloshshah֙ haki֣y nikebּa֔d vayehi֥y lahe֖m leshsa֑r ve'ad-hashshּeloshsha֖h lo'-baֽ'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Was he not held in greater honour than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was not included among them.

מִן־הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה֙ הֲכִ֣י נִכְבָּ֔ד וַיְהִ֥י לָהֶ֖ם לְשָׂ֑ר וְעַד־הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָֽא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubenaya֨hu ben-yehoyada֧ bּen-'iֽyshsh-chy cha֛yil rab-pּe'ali֖ym miֽqּabetze'e֑l h֣u hikּa֗h 'e֣t shshene֤y 'ari'el֙ mo'a֔b ve֠hu yara֞d vehikּa֧h 'eֽt-h'ryh ha'ari֛y bּet֥oke habּo֖'r bּey֥om hashshּaֽleg׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion.

וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֧ע בֶּן־אִֽישׁ־חי חַ֛יִל רַב־פְּעָלִ֖ים מִֽקַּבְצְאֵ֑ל ה֣וּא הִכָּ֗ה אֵ֣ת שְׁנֵ֤י אֲרִאֵל֙ מוֹאָ֔ב וְ֠הוּא יָרַ֞ד וְהִכָּ֧ה אֶֽת־האריה הָאֲרִ֛י בְּת֥וֹךְ הַבֹּ֖אר בְּי֥וֹם הַשָּֽׁלֶג׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehu'-hikּah֩ 'et-'i֨yshsh mitzeri֜y 'shr 'i֣yshsh mare'e֗h ubeya֤d hamּitzeriy֙ chani֔yt vayּe֥red 'ela֖yv bּashshּa֑bet vayּigezo֤l 'eֽt-hachaniyt֙ miyּa֣d hamּitzeri֔y vayּaharege֖hu bּachaniytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.

וְהוּא־הִכָּה֩ אֶת־אִ֨ישׁ מִצְרִ֜י אשר אִ֣ישׁ מַרְאֶ֗ה וּבְיַ֤ד הַמִּצְרִי֙ חֲנִ֔ית וַיֵּ֥רֶד אֵלָ֖יו בַּשָּׁ֑בֶט וַיִּגְזֹ֤ל אֶֽת־הַחֲנִית֙ מִיַּ֣ד הַמִּצְרִ֔י וַיַּהַרְגֵ֖הוּ בַּחֲנִיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh 'ashsa֔h bּenaya֖hu bּen-yehoyada֑ velo-shshe֖m bּishsheloshsha֥h hagּibּoriֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Such were the exploits of Benaiah son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty warriors.

אֵ֣לֶּה עָשָׂ֔ה בְּנָיָ֖הוּ בֶּן־יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע וְלוֹ־שֵׁ֖ם בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): min-hashshּeloshshi֣ym nikebּa֔d ve'el-hashshּeloshsha֖h lo'-ba֑ vayeshsime֥hu davi֖d 'el-mishshema'etּֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)He was held in greater honour than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.

מִן־הַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֣ים נִכְבָּ֔ד וְאֶל־הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָ֑א וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ דָוִ֖ד אֶל־מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsah-'e֥l 'achiֽy-yo'a֖b bּashshּeloshshi֑ym 'elechana֥n bּen-dּod֖o bּe֥yt laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Among the Thirty were: Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan son of Dodo from Bethlehem,

עֲשָׂה־אֵ֥ל אֲחִֽי־יוֹאָ֖ב בַּשְּׁלֹשִׁ֑ים אֶלְחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־דֹּד֖וֹ בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshamּah֙ haֽcharodi֔y 'eliyqa֖ hacharodiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite,

שַׁמָּה֙ הַֽחֲרֹדִ֔י אֱלִיקָ֖א הַחֲרֹדִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): che֚letz hapּaleti֔y 'iyra֥ ben-'iqּe֖shsh hatּeqo'iֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Helez the Paltite, Ira son of Ikkesh from Tekoa,

חֶ֚לֶץ הַפַּלְטִ֔י עִירָ֥א בֶן־עִקֵּ֖שׁ הַתְּקוֹעִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): abiy'e֨zer֙ haֽ'anּetoti֔y mebunּa֖y hachushshatiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Abiezer from Anathoth, Mebunnai the Hushathite,

אֲבִיעֶ֨זֶר֙ הָֽעַנְּתֹתִ֔י מְבֻנַּ֖י הַחֻשָׁתִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): tzalemon֙ haֽ'achochi֔y mahera֖y hanּetopatiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite,

צַלְמוֹן֙ הָֽאֲחֹחִ֔י מַהְרַ֖י הַנְּטֹפָתִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): che֥leb bּeֽn-bּa'ana֖h hanּetopati֑y s 'itּay֙ bּen-riyba֔y migּibe'a֖t bּene֥y bineyamiֽn׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Heled son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ithai son of Ribai from Gibeah in Benjamin,

חֵ֥לֶב בֶּֽן־בַּעֲנָ֖ה הַנְּטֹפָתִ֑י ס אִתַּי֙ בֶּן־רִיבַ֔י מִגִּבְעַ֖ת בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּenaya֨hu֙ pּire'a֣toni֔y hidּa֖y minּa֥chaley gaֽ'ashsh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Benaiah the Pirathonite, Hiddai from the ravines of Gaash,

בְּנָיָ֨הוּ֙ פִּרְעָ֣תֹנִ֔י הִדַּ֖י מִנַּ֥חֲלֵי גָֽעַשׁ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): abiֽy-'alebon֙ haֽ'arebati֔y 'azema֖vet habּarechumiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Abi-Albon the Arbathite, AzmavS the Barhumite,

אֲבִֽי־עַלְבוֹן֙ הָֽעַרְבָתִ֔י עַזְמָ֖וֶת הַבַּרְחֻמִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): eleyachebּa'֙ hashshּa֣'aleboni֔y bּene֥y yashshe֖n yehonataֽn׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan

אֶלְיַחְבָּא֙ הַשַּׁ֣עַלְבֹנִ֔י בְּנֵ֥י יָשֵׁ֖ן יְהוֹנָתָֽן׃ס
