Chapter 9
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֔d haki֣y yeshsh-'֔od 'ashshe֥r nota֖r lebe֣yt shsha'֑ul ve'e'eshse֤h 'imּo֙ che֔sed bּa'ab֖ur yehonataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David asked, 'Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔ד הֲכִ֣י יֶשׁ־ע֔וֹד אֲשֶׁ֥ר נוֹתַ֖ר לְבֵ֣ית שָׁא֑וּל וְאֶעֱשֶׂ֤ה עִמּוֹ֙ חֶ֔סֶד בַּעֲב֖וּר יְהוֹנָתָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ulebe֨yt shsha'֥ul 'e֨bed֙ ushshem֣o tziyba֔ vayּiqere'u-l֖o 'el-dּavi֑d vayּo֨'mer hamּe֧leke 'ela֛yv ha'atּa֥h tziyba֖ vayּo֥'mer 'abedּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, 'Are you Ziba?' 'At your service,' he replied.

וּלְבֵ֨ית שָׁא֥וּל עֶ֨בֶד֙ וּשְׁמ֣וֹ צִיבָ֔א וַיִּקְרְאוּ־ל֖וֹ אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַמֶּ֧לֶךְ אֵלָ֛יו הַאַתָּ֥ה צִיבָ֖א וַיֹּ֥אמֶר עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer hamּe֗leke ha'e֨pes '֥od 'iyshsh֙ lebe֣yt shsha'֔ul ve'e'eshse֥h 'imּ֖o che֣sed 'elohi֑ym vayּo֤'mer tziyba'֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke '֛od bּe֥n liyhonata֖n neke֥h ragelaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king asked, 'Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?' Ziba answered the king, 'There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ הַאֶ֨פֶס ע֥וֹד אִישׁ֙ לְבֵ֣ית שָׁא֔וּל וְאֶעֱשֶׂ֥ה עִמּ֖וֹ חֶ֣סֶד אֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר צִיבָא֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ ע֛וֹד בֵּ֥ן לִיהוֹנָתָ֖ן נְכֵ֥ה רַגְלָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'mer-l֥o hamּe֖leke 'eypo֣h h֑u vayּo֤'mer tziyba'֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke hinּeh-h֗u bּe֛yt maki֥yr bּen-'amּiy'e֖l bּel֥o debaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Where is he?' the king asked. Ziba answered, 'He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar.'

וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֵיפֹ֣ה ה֑וּא וַיֹּ֤אמֶר צִיבָא֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ הִנֵּה־ה֗וּא בֵּ֛ית מָכִ֥יר בֶּן־עַמִּיאֵ֖ל בְּל֥וֹ דְבָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֖ch hamּe֣leke dּavi֑d vayּiqּache֗hu mibּe֛yt maki֥yr bּen-'amּiy'e֖l milּ֥o debaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֖ח הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִ֑ד וַיִּקָּחֵ֗הוּ מִבֵּ֛ית מָכִ֥יר בֶּן־עַמִּיאֵ֖ל מִלּ֥וֹ דְבָֽר׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠yּabo mepiybo֨shshet bּen-yehonata֤n bּen-shsha'ul֙ 'el-dּavi֔d vayּipּo֥l 'al-pּana֖yv vayּishshetּa֑chu vayּo֤'mer dּavid֙ mepiybo֔shshet vayּo֖'mer hinּe֥h 'abedּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When MephiboshES son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honour. David said, 'MephiboshES!' 'At your service,' he replied.

וַ֠יָּבֹא מְפִיבֹ֨שֶׁת בֶּן־יְהוֹנָתָ֤ן בֶּן־שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־פָּנָ֖יו וַיִּשְׁתָּ֑חוּ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ מְפִיבֹ֔שֶׁת וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּ֥ה עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ l֨o davi֜d 'al-tּiyra֗ kּi֣y 'ashsoh֩ 'e'eshse֨h 'imּeka֥ che֨sed֙ bּaֽ'abur֙ yehonata֣n 'abi֔yka vahashshiboti֣y leka֔ 'eֽt-kּal-shsede֖h shsha'֣ul 'abi֑yka ve'atּa֗h tּo֥'kal le֛chem 'al-shshulechani֖y tּamiֽyd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Don't be afraid,' David said to him, 'for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.'

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ ל֨וֹ דָוִ֜ד אַל־תִּירָ֗א כִּ֣י עָשֹׂה֩ אֶעֱשֶׂ֨ה עִמְּךָ֥ חֶ֨סֶד֙ בַּֽעֲבוּר֙ יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן אָבִ֔יךָ וַהֲשִׁבֹתִ֣י לְךָ֔ אֶֽת־כָּל־שְׂדֵ֖ה שָׁא֣וּל אָבִ֑יךָ וְאַתָּ֗ה תֹּ֥אכַל לֶ֛חֶם עַל־שֻׁלְחָנִ֖י תָּמִֽיד׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshetּa֕chu vayּo֖'mer me֣h 'abedּe֑ka kּi֣y pani֔yta 'el-hakּe֥leb hamּe֖t 'ashshe֥r kּamֽoniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)MephiboshES bowed down and said, 'What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?'

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֕חוּ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מֶ֣ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֣י פָנִ֔יתָ אֶל־הַכֶּ֥לֶב הַמֵּ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּמֽוֹנִי׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֣ hamּe֗leke 'el-tziyba֛ na֥'ar shsha'֖ul vayּo֣'mer 'ela֑yv kּol֩ 'ashshe֨r haya֤h leshsha'ul֙ ulekal-bּeyt֔o nata֖tּiy leben-'adoneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, 'I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family.'

וַיִּקְרָ֣א הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אֶל־צִיבָ֛א נַ֥עַר שָׁא֖וּל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֤ה לְשָׁאוּל֙ וּלְכָל־בֵּית֔וֹ נָתַ֖תִּי לְבֶן־אֲדֹנֶֽיךָ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aba֣detּa lּ֣o 'eֽt-ha'adama֡h 'atּah֩ ubane֨yka va'abade֜yka vehebe֗'ta vehaya֨h leben-'adone֤yka lּe֨chem֙ va'akal֔o umepiybo֨shshet֙ bּen-'adone֔yka yo'ka֥l tּami֛yd le֖chem 'al-shshulechani֑y uletziyba֗ chamishshּa֥h 'ashsa֛r bּani֖ym ve'eshseri֥ym 'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And MephiboshES, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.' (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.)

וְעָבַ֣דְתָּ לּ֣וֹ אֶֽת־הָאֲדָמָ֡ה אַתָּה֩ וּבָנֶ֨יךָ וַעֲבָדֶ֜יךָ וְהֵבֵ֗אתָ וְהָיָ֨ה לְבֶן־אֲדֹנֶ֤יךָ לֶּ֨חֶם֙ וַאֲכָל֔וֹ וּמְפִיבֹ֨שֶׁת֙ בֶּן־אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ יֹאכַ֥ל תָּמִ֛יד לֶ֖חֶם עַל־שֻׁלְחָנִ֑י וּלְצִיבָ֗א חֲמִשָּׁ֥ה עָשָׂ֛ר בָּנִ֖ים וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים עֲבָדִֽים׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer tziyba'֙ 'el-hamּe֔leke kּekol֩ 'ashshe֨r yetzaue֜h 'adoni֤y hamּe֨leke֙ 'et-'abedּ֔o kּe֖n ya'ashse֣h 'abedּe֑ka umepiybo֗shshet 'okel֙ 'al-shshulechani֔y kּe'acha֖d mibּene֥y hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Ziba said to the king, 'Your servant will do everything my lord the king commands.' So MephiboshES ate at David’s table like one of the king’s sons.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר צִיבָא֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְצַוֶּ֜ה אֲדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֶת־עַבְדּ֔וֹ כֵּ֖ן יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וּמְפִיבֹ֗שֶׁת אֹכֵל֙ עַל־שֻׁלְחָנִ֔י כְּאַחַ֖ד מִבְּנֵ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): velimepiybo֥shshet bּen-qata֖n ushshem֣o miyka֑ vekol֙ moshsha֣b bּeyt-tziyba֔ 'abadi֖ym limepiyboֽshshet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)MephiboshES had a young son named Mika, and all the members of Ziba’s household were servants of MephiboshES.

וְלִמְפִיבֹ֥שֶׁת בֵּן־קָטָ֖ן וּשְׁמ֣וֹ מִיכָ֑א וְכֹל֙ מוֹשַׁ֣ב בֵּית־צִיבָ֔א עֲבָדִ֖ים לִמְפִיבֹֽשֶׁת׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): umepiybo֗shshet yoshsheb֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m kּi֣y 'al-shshulecha֥n hamּe֛leke tּami֖yd h֣u 'oke֑l veh֥u pisּe֖cha shshetּe֥y ragelaֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)And MephiboshES lived in Jerusalem, because he always ate at the king’s table; he was lame in both feet.

וּמְפִיבֹ֗שֶׁת יֹשֵׁב֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם כִּ֣י עַל־שֻׁלְחַ֥ן הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ תָּמִ֖יד ה֣וּא אֹכֵ֑ל וְה֥וּא פִסֵּ֖חַ שְׁתֵּ֥י רַגְלָֽיו׃פ
