Amos

Chapter 7

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֤h hire'a֨niy֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h vehinּeh֙ yotze֣r gּoba֔y bּitechilּa֖t 'al֣ot halּa֑qeshsh vehi֨nּeh-le֔qeshsh 'acha֖r gּizּe֥y hamּeֽleke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus has the Lord GOD showed to me; and, behold, He formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, it was the latter growth after the king's mowings.

כֹּ֤ה הִרְאַ֨נִי֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהִנֵּה֙ יוֹצֵ֣ר גֹּבַ֔י בִּתְחִלַּ֖ת עֲל֣וֹת הַלָּ֑קֶשׁ וְהִ֨נֵּה־לֶ֔קֶשׁ אַחַ֖ר גִּזֵּ֥י הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h 'im-kּilּah֙ leֽ'ekol֙ 'et-'e֣shseb ha'a֔retz va'oma֗r 'adona֤y yehvih֙ seֽlaֽch-na֔ mi֥y yaq֖um yaֽ'aqo֑b kּi֥y qato֖n hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass, that when they had made an end of eating the grass of the land, then I said, "O Lord GOD, forgive, I beseech You: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small."

וְהָיָ֗ה אִם־כִּלָּה֙ לֶֽאֱכוֹל֙ אֶת־עֵ֣שֶׂב הָאָ֔רֶץ וָאֹמַ֗ר אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ סְֽלַֽח־נָ֔א מִ֥י יָק֖וּם יַֽעֲקֹ֑ב כִּ֥י קָטֹ֖ן הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nicha֥m yehva֖h 'al-zo֑'t lo֥ tiheye֖h 'ama֥r yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD repented for this: "It shall not be," says the LORD.

נִחַ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה עַל־זֹ֑את לֹ֥א תִהְיֶ֖ה אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֤h hire'a֨niy֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h vehinּe֥h qore֛ lari֥b bּa'e֖shsh 'adona֣y yehvi֑h vatּo֨'kal֙ 'et-tּeh֣om rabּa֔h ve'akela֖h 'et-hacheֽleq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus has the Lord GOD showed to me: and, behold, the Lord GOD called to contend by fire, and it devoured the great deep, and did eat up a part.

כֹּ֤ה הִרְאַ֨נִי֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֥ה קֹרֵ֛א לָרִ֥ב בָּאֵ֖שׁ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה וַתֹּ֨אכַל֙ אֶת־תְּה֣וֹם רַבָּ֔ה וְאָכְלָ֖ה אֶת־הַחֵֽלֶק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'oma֗r 'adona֤y yehvih֙ chadal-na֔ mi֥y yaq֖um ya'aqo֑b kּi֥y qato֖n hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then said I, "O Lord GOD, cease, I beseech You: by whom shall Jacob arise? for he is small."

וָאֹמַ֗ר אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהוִה֙ חֲדַל־נָ֔א מִ֥י יָק֖וּם יַעֲקֹ֑ב כִּ֥י קָטֹ֖ן הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nicha֥m yehva֖h 'al-zo֑'t gּam-hiy'֙ lo֣ tiֽheye֔h 'ama֖r 'adona֥y yehviֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD repented for this: "This also shall not be," says the Lord GOD.

נִחַ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה עַל־זֹ֑את גַּם־הִיא֙ לֹ֣א תִֽהְיֶ֔ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣h hire'a֔niy vehinּe֧h 'adona֛y nitzּa֖b 'al-choma֣t 'ana֑ke ubeyad֖o 'anaֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus He showed me: and, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand.

כֹּ֣ה הִרְאַ֔נִי וְהִנֵּ֧ה אֲדֹנָ֛י נִצָּ֖ב עַל־חוֹמַ֣ת אֲנָ֑ךְ וּבְיָד֖וֹ אֲנָֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'ela֗y maֽh-'atּa֤h ro'eh֙ 'am֔os va'oma֖r 'ana֑ke vayּo֣'mer 'adona֗y hineni֨y shsa֤m 'anake֙ bּeqe֨reb֙ 'amּi֣y yishsera'e֔l loֽ'-'osi֥yp '֖od 'ab֥or lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to me, "Amos, what seest you?" And I said, "A plumbline." Then said the Lord, "Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of My people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more:"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י מָֽה־אַתָּ֤ה רֹאֶה֙ עָמ֔וֹס וָאֹמַ֖ר אֲנָ֑ךְ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲדֹנָ֗י הִנְנִ֨י שָׂ֤ם אֲנָךְ֙ בְּקֶ֨רֶב֙ עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹֽא־אוֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד עֲב֥וֹר לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venashsha֨mּu֙ bּam֣ot yishsecha֔q umiqedּeshshe֥y yishsera'e֖l yechera֑bu veqametּi֛y 'al-bּe֥yt yarabe'a֖m bּechaֽreb׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"And the high places of Isaac shall pursue desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste; and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword."

וְנָשַׁ֨מּוּ֙ בָּמ֣וֹת יִשְׂחָ֔ק וּמִקְדְּשֵׁ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יֶחֱרָ֑בוּ וְקַמְתִּ֛י עַל־בֵּ֥ית יָרָבְעָ֖ם בֶּחָֽרֶב׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֗ch 'amatzeyah֙ kּohe֣n bּeֽyt-'e֔l 'el-yarabe'a֥m meֽleke-yishsera'e֖l le'mo֑r qashsha֨r 'ale֜yka 'am֗os bּeqe֨reb֙ bּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l lo'-tuka֣l ha'a֔retz lehaki֖yl 'et-kּal-dּebaraֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, "Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words."

וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֲמַצְיָה֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן בֵּֽית־אֵ֔ל אֶל־יָרָבְעָ֥ם מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵאמֹ֑ר קָשַׁ֨ר עָלֶ֜יךָ עָמ֗וֹס בְּקֶ֨רֶב֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹא־תוּכַ֣ל הָאָ֔רֶץ לְהָכִ֖יל אֶת־כָּל־דְּבָרָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy-koh֙ 'ama֣r 'am֔os bּache֖reb yam֣ut yarabe'a֑m veyi֨shsera'e֔l gּalo֥h yigele֖h me'a֥l 'adematֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"For thus Amos says, 'Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel shall surely be led away captive out of their own land.'"

כִּי־כֹה֙ אָמַ֣ר עָמ֔וֹס בַּחֶ֖רֶב יָמ֣וּת יָרָבְעָ֑ם וְיִ֨שְׂרָאֵ֔ל גָּלֹ֥ה יִגְלֶ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'amatzeyah֙ 'el-'am֔os choze֕h le֥ke bּerach-leka֖ 'el-'e֣retz yehuda֑h ve'ekal-shsha֣m le֔chem veshsha֖m tּinּabeֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also Amaziah said to Amos, "O you seer, go, flee you away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there:"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲמַצְיָה֙ אֶל־עָמ֔וֹס חֹזֶ֕ה לֵ֥ךְ בְּרַח־לְךָ֖ אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ יְהוּדָ֑ה וֶאֱכָל־שָׁ֣ם לֶ֔חֶם וְשָׁ֖ם תִּנָּבֵֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeֽyt-'e֔l loֽ'-tosi֥yp '֖od lehinּabe֑ kּi֤y miqedּashsh-me֨leke֙ h֔u ube֥yt mamelaka֖h hֽu'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"But prophesy not again any more at Bethel: for it is the king's chapel, and it is the king's court."

וּבֵֽית־אֵ֔ל לֹֽא־תוֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד לְהִנָּבֵ֑א כִּ֤י מִקְדַּשׁ־מֶ֨לֶךְ֙ ה֔וּא וּבֵ֥ית מַמְלָכָ֖ה הֽוּא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'an 'amos֙ vayּo֣'mer 'el-'amatzeya֔h lo'-nabi֣y 'ano֔kiy velo֥ ben-nabi֖y 'ano֑kiy kּiֽy-boqe֥r 'ano֖kiy ubole֥s shshiqemiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, "I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit:"

וַיַּ֤עַן עָמוֹס֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־אֲמַצְיָ֔ה לֹא־נָבִ֣יא אָנֹ֔כִי וְלֹ֥א בֶן־נָבִ֖יא אָנֹ֑כִי כִּֽי־בוֹקֵ֥ר אָנֹ֖כִי וּבוֹלֵ֥ס שִׁקְמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּache֣niy yehva֔h me'achare֖y hatzּo֑'n vayּo֤'mer 'elay֙ yehva֔h le֥ke hinּabe֖ 'el-'amּi֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said to me, 'Go, prophesy to My people Israel.'"

וַיִּקָּחֵ֣נִי יְהוָ֔ה מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י הַצֹּ֑אן וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלַי֙ יְהוָ֔ה לֵ֥ךְ הִנָּבֵ֖א אֶל־עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h shshema֣ dּebar-yehva֑h 'atּa֣h 'ome֗r lo֤ tinּabe'֙ 'al-yishsera'e֔l velo֥ tatּi֖yp 'al-bּe֥yt yishsechaֽq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Now therefore hear you the word of the LORD: You say, 'Prophesy not against Israel, and drop not your word against the house of Isaac.'"

וְעַתָּ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע דְּבַר־יְהוָ֑ה אַתָּ֣ה אֹמֵ֗ר לֹ֤א תִנָּבֵא֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְלֹ֥א תַטִּ֖יף עַל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂחָֽק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֞n kּoh-'ama֣r yehva֗h 'ishshetּeka֞ bּa'i֤yr tּizeneh֙ ubane֤yka ubenote֨yka֙ bּache֣reb yipּo֔lu ve'ademateka֖ bּache֣bel tּechulּa֑q ve'atּa֗h 'al-'adama֤h teme'ah֙ tּam֔ut veyi֨shsera'e֔l gּalo֥h yigele֖h me'a֥l 'adematֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore thus says the LORD; 'Your wife shall be an harlot in the city, and your sons and your daughters shall fall by the sword, and your land shall be divided by line; and you shall die in a polluted land: and Israel shall surely go into captivity forth of his land.'"

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֞ בָּעִ֤יר תִּזְנֶה֙ וּבָנֶ֤יךָ וּבְנֹתֶ֨יךָ֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֔לוּ וְאַדְמָתְךָ֖ בַּחֶ֣בֶל תְּחֻלָּ֑ק וְאַתָּ֗ה עַל־אֲדָמָ֤ה טְמֵאָה֙ תָּמ֔וּת וְיִ֨שְׂרָאֵ֔ל גָּלֹ֥ה יִגְלֶ֖ה מֵעַ֥ל אַדְמָתֽוֹ׃ס
