Chapter 8

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֥h hire'a֖niy 'adona֣y yehvi֑h vehinּe֖h kּel֥ub qaֽyitz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus has the Lord GOD showed to me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

כֹּ֥ה הִרְאַ֖נִי אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֖ה כְּל֥וּב קָֽיִץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer maֽh-'atּa֤h ro'eh֙ 'am֔os va'oma֖r kּel֣ub qa֑yitz vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'ela֗y bּa֤ haqּetz֙ 'el-'amּi֣y yishsera'e֔l lo'-'osi֥yp '֖od 'ab֥or lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And He said, "Amos, what seest you?" And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then said the LORD to me, "The end is come upon My people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more."

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָֽה־אַתָּ֤ה רֹאֶה֙ עָמ֔וֹס וָאֹמַ֖ר כְּל֣וּב קָ֑יִץ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י בָּ֤א הַקֵּץ֙ אֶל־עַמִּ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹא־אוֹסִ֥יף ע֖וֹד עֲב֥וֹר לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veheyli֜ylu shshiyr֤ot heykal֙ bּayּ֣om hah֔u ne'u֖m 'adona֣y yehvi֑h ra֣b hapּe֔ger bּekal-maq֖om hishsheli֥yke haֽs׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day," says the Lord GOD: "there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence."

וְהֵילִ֜ילוּ שִׁיר֤וֹת הֵיכָל֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה רַ֣ב הַפֶּ֔גֶר בְּכָל־מָק֖וֹם הִשְׁלִ֥יךְ הָֽס׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshime'u-zo֕'t hashshּo'api֖ym 'ebey֑on velashshebּi֖yt 'nvy 'aniyּey-'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Hear this, O you that swallow up the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail,

שִׁמְעוּ־זֹ֕את הַשֹּׁאֲפִ֖ים אֶבְי֑וֹן וְלַשְׁבִּ֖ית ענוי עֲנִיֵּי־אָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): le'mo֗r mata֞y ya'abo֤r hacho֨deshsh֙ venashshebּi֣yrah shshּe֔ber vehashshּabּa֖t venipetּechah-bּa֑r lehaqeti֤yn 'eypah֙ ulehagedּi֣yl shshe֔qel ule'aue֖t mo'zene֥y miremaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Saying, "When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?"

לֵאמֹ֗ר מָתַ֞י יַעֲבֹ֤ר הַחֹ֨דֶשׁ֙ וְנַשְׁבִּ֣ירָה שֶּׁ֔בֶר וְהַשַּׁבָּ֖ת וְנִפְתְּחָה־בָּ֑ר לְהַקְטִ֤ין אֵיפָה֙ וּלְהַגְדִּ֣יל שֶׁ֔קֶל וּלְעַוֵּ֖ת מֹאזְנֵ֥י מִרְמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): liqen֤ot bּakּe֨sep֙ dּalּi֔ym ve'ebey֖on bּa'ab֣ur na'ala֑yim umapּa֥l bּa֖r nashshebּiֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"That we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yes, and sell the refuse of the wheat?"

לִקְנ֤וֹת בַּכֶּ֨סֶף֙ דַּלִּ֔ים וְאֶבְי֖וֹן בַּעֲב֣וּר נַעֲלָ֑יִם וּמַפַּ֥ל בַּ֖ר נַשְׁבִּֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): nishshebּa֥ yehva֖h bּige'֣on ya'aqo֑b 'im-'eshshekּa֥ch lane֖tzach kּal-ma'ashseyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD has sworn by the excellency of Jacob, "Surely I will never forget any of their works."

נִשְׁבַּ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה בִּגְא֣וֹן יַעֲקֹ֑ב אִם־אֶשְׁכַּ֥ח לָנֶ֖צַח כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֤'al zo't֙ loֽ'-tiregּa֣z ha'a֔retz ve'aba֖l kּal-yoshshe֣b bּa֑hּ ve'aleta֤h ka'or֙ kּulּa֔hּ venigereshsha֥h vnshqh venishsheqe'a֖h kּiy'֥or mitzeraֽyim׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwells therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.

הַ֤עַל זֹאת֙ לֹֽא־תִרְגַּ֣ז הָאָ֔רֶץ וְאָבַ֖ל כָּל־יוֹשֵׁ֣ב בָּ֑הּ וְעָלְתָ֤ה כָאֹר֙ כֻּלָּ֔הּ וְנִגְרְשָׁ֥ה ונשקה וְנִשְׁקְעָ֖ה כִּיא֥וֹר מִצְרָֽיִם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֣h ׀ bּayּ֣om hah֗u ne'um֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h vehebe'ti֥y hashshּe֖meshsh bּaֽtzּahora֑yim vehachashshaketּi֥y la'a֖retz bּey֥om 'ֽor׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And it shall come to pass in that day," says the Lord GOD, "that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:"

וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם וְהַחֲשַׁכְתִּ֥י לָאָ֖רֶץ בְּי֥וֹם אֽוֹר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehapaketּi֨y chagּeyke֜m le'e֗bel vekal-shshiֽyreykem֙ leqiyna֔h veha'aleyti֤y 'al-kּal-matena֨yim֙ shsa֔q ve'al-kּal-ro֖'shsh qarecha֑h veshsametּi֨yha֙ kּe'e֣bel yachi֔yd ve'achariyta֖hּ kּey֥om maֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day."

וְהָפַכְתִּ֨י חַגֵּיכֶ֜ם לְאֵ֗בֶל וְכָל־שִֽׁירֵיכֶם֙ לְקִינָ֔ה וְהַעֲלֵיתִ֤י עַל־כָּל־מָתְנַ֨יִם֙ שָׂ֔ק וְעַל־כָּל־רֹ֖אשׁ קָרְחָ֑ה וְשַׂמְתִּ֨יהָ֙ כְּאֵ֣בֶל יָחִ֔יד וְאַחֲרִיתָ֖הּ כְּי֥וֹם מָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֣h ׀ yami֣ym bּa'i֗ym ne'um֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h vehishshelachetּi֥y ra'a֖b bּa'a֑retz loֽ'-ra'a֤b lalּe֨chem֙ veloֽ'-tzama֣ lamּa֔yim kּi֣y 'im-lishshemo֔'a 'e֖t dּibere֥y yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Behold, the days come," says the Lord GOD, "that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:"

הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִ֗ים נְאֻם֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְהִשְׁלַחְתִּ֥י רָעָ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ לֹֽא־רָעָ֤ב לַלֶּ֨חֶם֙ וְלֹֽא־צָמָ֣א לַמַּ֔יִם כִּ֣י אִם־לִשְׁמֹ֔עַ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vena'u֙ miyּa֣m 'ad-ya֔m umitzּap֖on ve'ad-mizera֑ch yeshshֽotet֛u lebaqּe֥shsh 'et-dּebar-yehva֖h velo֥ yimetzaֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it."

וְנָעוּ֙ מִיָּ֣ם עַד־יָ֔ם וּמִצָּפ֖וֹן וְעַד־מִזְרָ֑ח יְשֽׁוֹטְט֛וּ לְבַקֵּ֥שׁ אֶת־דְּבַר־יְהוָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א יִמְצָֽאוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֨om hah֜u tּi֠te'alּapenah habּetulo֧t hayּap֛ot vehabּachuri֖ym bּatzּamaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֜וּא תִּ֠תְעַלַּפְנָה הַבְּתוּלֹ֧ת הַיָּפ֛וֹת וְהַבַּחוּרִ֖ים בַּצָּמָֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hanּishshebּa'iym֙ bּe'ashshema֣t shshoֽmer֔on ve'amer֗u che֤y 'elohe֨yka֙ dּa֔n veche֖y dּe֣reke bּe'eֽr-shsha֑ba venapel֖u velo'-yaq֥umu 'ֽod׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, "Your god, O Dan, lives;" and, "The manner of Beersheba lives;" even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

הַנִּשְׁבָּעִים֙ בְּאַשְׁמַ֣ת שֹֽׁמְר֔וֹן וְאָמְר֗וּ חֵ֤י אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ דָּ֔ן וְחֵ֖י דֶּ֣רֶךְ בְּאֵֽר־שָׁ֑בַע וְנָפְל֖וּ וְלֹא־יָק֥וּמוּ עֽוֹד׃ס
