Deuteronomy

Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּani֣ym 'atּe֔m laֽyhva֖h 'eloheyke֑m lo֣ titegּoֽded֗u veloֽ'-tashsi֧ymu qarecha֛h bּe֥yn 'eyneyke֖m lameֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You are the children of the LORD your God. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead,

בָּנִ֣ים אַתֶּ֔ם לַֽיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֑ם לֹ֣א תִתְגֹּֽדְד֗וּ וְלֹֽא־תָשִׂ֧ימוּ קָרְחָ֛ה בֵּ֥ין עֵינֵיכֶ֖ם לָמֵֽת׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y 'a֤m qadoshsh֙ 'atּa֔h layhva֖h 'elohe֑yka ubeka֞ bּacha֣r yehva֗h liֽhey֥ot lo֙ le'a֣m segulּa֔h mikּol֙ haֽ'amּi֔ym 'ashshe֖r 'al-pּene֥y ha'adamaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession.

כִּ֣י עַ֤ם קָדוֹשׁ֙ אַתָּ֔ה לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ וּבְךָ֞ בָּחַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה לִֽהְי֥וֹת לוֹ֙ לְעַ֣ם סְגֻלָּ֔ה מִכֹּל֙ הָֽעַמִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֥ to'ka֖l kּal-tּo'ebaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not eat any detestable thing.

לֹ֥א תֹאכַ֖ל כָּל־תּוֹעֵבָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֥'t habּehema֖h 'ashshe֣r tּo'ke֑lu shsh֕or shse֥h keshsabi֖ym veshse֥h 'izּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,

זֹ֥את הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאכֵ֑לוּ שׁ֕וֹר שֵׂ֥ה כְשָׂבִ֖ים וְשֵׂ֥ה עִזִּֽים׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ayּa֥l utzebi֖y veyachem֑ur ve'aqּ֥o vediyshsho֖n ute'֥o vazaֽmer׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope and the mountain sheep.

אַיָּ֥ל וּצְבִ֖י וְיַחְמ֑וּר וְאַקּ֥וֹ וְדִישֹׁ֖ן וּתְא֥וֹ וָזָֽמֶר׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-bּehema֞h mapere֣set pּaresa֗h veshshosa֤'at shshe֨sa'֙ shshetּe֣y peras֔ot ma'ala֥t gּera֖h bּabּehema֑h 'ota֖hּ tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

וְכָל־בְּהֵמָ֞ה מַפְרֶ֣סֶת פַּרְסָ֗ה וְשֹׁסַ֤עַת שֶׁ֨סַע֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י פְרָס֔וֹת מַעֲלַ֥ת גֵּרָ֖ה בַּבְּהֵמָ֑ה אֹתָ֖הּ תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣ke 'et-ze֞h lo֤ toֽ'kelu֙ mimּֽa'ale֣y hagּera֔h umimּaperiyse֥y hapּaresa֖h hashshּesu'a֑h 'eֽt-ha֠gּamal ve'et-ha'arene֨bet ve'et-hashshּapa֜n kּiֽy-ma'ale֧h gera֣h he֗mּah uparesah֙ lo֣ hiperi֔ysu teme'i֥ym he֖m lakeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)However, of those that chew the cud or that have a divided hoof you may not eat the camel, the rabbit or the hyrax. Although they chew the cud, they do not have a divided hoof; they are ceremonially unclean for you.

אַ֣ךְ אֶת־זֶ֞ה לֹ֤א תֹֽאכְלוּ֙ מִמַּֽעֲלֵ֣י הַגֵּרָ֔ה וּמִמַּפְרִיסֵ֥י הַפַּרְסָ֖ה הַשְּׁסוּעָ֑ה אֶֽת־הַ֠גָּמָל וְאֶת־הָאַרְנֶ֨בֶת וְאֶת־הַשָּׁפָ֜ן כִּֽי־מַעֲלֵ֧ה גֵרָ֣ה הֵ֗מָּה וּפַרְסָה֙ לֹ֣א הִפְרִ֔יסוּ טְמֵאִ֥ים הֵ֖ם לָכֶֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha֠chaziyr kּiֽy-maperi֨ys pּaresa֥h hu'֙ velo֣ gera֔h tame֥ h֖u lake֑m mibּeshsaram֙ lo֣ to'ke֔lu ubenibelata֖m lo֥ tigּaֽ'u׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The pig is also unclean; although it has a divided hoof, it does not chew the cud. You are not to eat their meat or touch their carcasses.

וְאֶת־הַ֠חֲזִיר כִּֽי־מַפְרִ֨יס פַּרְסָ֥ה הוּא֙ וְלֹ֣א גֵרָ֔ה טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶ֑ם מִבְּשָׂרָם֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ וּבְנִבְלָתָ֖ם לֹ֥א תִגָּֽעוּ׃ס

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-zeh֙ tּoֽ'kel֔u mikּo֖l 'ashshe֣r bּamּa֑yim kּo֧l 'ashsher-l֛o senapּi֥yr veqashseqe֖shset tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of all the creatures living in the water, you may eat any that has fins and scales.

אֶת־זֶה֙ תֹּֽאכְל֔וּ מִכֹּ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּמָּ֑יִם כֹּ֧ל אֲשֶׁר־ל֛וֹ סְנַפִּ֥יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֖שֶׂת תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veko֨l 'ashshe֧r 'eֽyn-l֛o senapּi֥yr veqashseqe֖shset lo֣ to'ke֑lu tame֥ h֖u lakeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But anything that does not have fins and scales you may not eat; for you it is unclean.

וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁ֧ר אֵֽין־ל֛וֹ סְנַפִּ֥יר וְקַשְׂקֶ֖שֶׂת לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֑לוּ טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶֽם׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-tzipּ֥or tehora֖h tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may eat any clean bird.

כָּל־צִפּ֥וֹר טְהֹרָ֖ה תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): veze֕h 'ashshe֥r loֽ'-to'kel֖u mehe֑m hanּe֥shsher vehapּe֖res vehaֽ'azeniyּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But these you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the black vulture,

וְזֶ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־תֹאכְל֖וּ מֵהֶ֑ם הַנֶּ֥שֶׁר וְהַפֶּ֖רֶס וְהָֽעָזְנִיָּֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehara'ah֙ ve'et-ha֣'ayּa֔h vehadּayּa֖h lemiynaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the red kite, the black kite, any kind of falcon,

וְהָרָאָה֙ וְאֶת־הָ֣אַיָּ֔ה וְהַדַּיָּ֖ה לְמִינָֽהּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֥t kּal-'ore֖b lemiynֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)any kind of raven,

וְאֵ֥ת כָּל־עֹרֵ֖ב לְמִינֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et֙ bּa֣t haֽyּa'ana֔h ve'et-hatּachema֖s ve'et-hashshּa֑chap ve'et-hanּe֖tz lemiyneֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk,

וְאֵת֙ בַּ֣ת הַֽיַּעֲנָ֔ה וְאֶת־הַתַּחְמָ֖ס וְאֶת־הַשָּׁ֑חַף וְאֶת־הַנֵּ֖ץ לְמִינֵֽהוּ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-hakּ֥os ve'et-hayּaneshsh֖up vehatּineshshaֽmet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,

אֶת־הַכּ֥וֹס וְאֶת־הַיַּנְשׁ֖וּף וְהַתִּנְשָֽׁמֶת׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaqּa'a֥t ve'eֽt-haracha֖mah ve'et-hashshּalaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the desert owl, the osprey, the cormorant,

וְהַקָּאָ֥ת וְאֶֽת־הָרָחָ֖מָה וְאֶת־הַשָּׁלָֽךְ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֣chasiyda֔h veha'anapa֖h lemiyna֑hּ vehadּukiypa֖t veha'atalּeֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

וְהַ֣חֲסִידָ֔ה וְהָאֲנָפָ֖ה לְמִינָ֑הּ וְהַדּוּכִיפַ֖ת וְהָעֲטַלֵּֽף׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֙ shshe֣retz ha'֔op tame֥ h֖u lake֑m lo֖ ye'akeֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)All flying insects are unclean to you; do not eat them.

וְכֹל֙ שֶׁ֣רֶץ הָע֔וֹף טָמֵ֥א ה֖וּא לָכֶ֑ם לֹ֖א יֵאָכֵֽלוּ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-'֥op tah֖or tּo'keֽlu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But any winged creature that is clean you may eat.

כָּל־ע֥וֹף טָה֖וֹר תֹּאכֵֽלוּ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֣ to'kel֣u kal-ne֠belah lagּe֨r 'ashsher-bּishshe'are֜yka tּitּene֣nּah va'akala֗hּ '֤o makor֙ lenakeri֔y kּi֣y 'a֤m qadoshsh֙ 'atּa֔h layhva֖h 'elohe֑yka loֽ'-tebashshּe֥l gּedi֖y bּachale֥b 'imּֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not eat anything you find already dead. You may give it to the foreigner residing in any of your towns, and they may eat it, or you may sell it to any other foreigner. But you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk.

לֹ֣א תֹאכְל֣וּ כָל־נְ֠בֵלָה לַגֵּ֨ר אֲשֶׁר־בִּשְׁעָרֶ֜יךָ תִּתְּנֶ֣נָּה וַאֲכָלָ֗הּ א֤וֹ מָכֹר֙ לְנָכְרִ֔י כִּ֣י עַ֤ם קָדוֹשׁ֙ אַתָּ֔ה לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לֹֽא־תְבַשֵּׁ֥ל גְּדִ֖י בַּחֲלֵ֥ב אִמּֽוֹ׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsּe֣r tּe'ashsּe֔r 'e֖t kּal-tּebu'a֣t zare'e֑ka hayּotze֥ hashsּade֖h shshana֥h shshanaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year.

עַשֵּׂ֣ר תְּעַשֵּׂ֔ר אֵ֖ת כָּל־תְּבוּאַ֣ת זַרְעֶ֑ךָ הַיֹּצֵ֥א הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה שָׁנָ֥ה שָׁנָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'akaletּa֞ lipene֣y ׀ yehva֣h 'elohe֗yka bּamּaq֣om 'ashsher-yibechar֮ leshshakּe֣n shshem֣o shsham֒ ma'eshsa֤r dּegaֽneka֙ tּiֽyroshsheka֣ veyitzehare֔ka ubekoro֥t bּeqareka֖ vetzo'ne֑ka lema֣'an tּilema֗d leyire'a֛h 'et-yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka kּal-hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Eat the tithe of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks in the presence of the LORD your God at the place he will choose as a dwelling for his Name, so that you may learn to revere the LORD your God always.

וְאָכַלְתָּ֞ לִפְנֵ֣י ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ בַּמָּק֣וֹם אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַר֮ לְשַׁכֵּ֣ן שְׁמ֣וֹ שָׁם֒ מַעְשַׂ֤ר דְּגָֽנְךָ֙ תִּֽירֹשְׁךָ֣ וְיִצְהָרֶ֔ךָ וּבְכֹרֹ֥ת בְּקָרְךָ֖ וְצֹאנֶ֑ךָ לְמַ֣עַן תִּלְמַ֗ד לְיִרְאָ֛ה אֶת־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽy-yirebּe֨h mimּeka֜ hadּe֗reke kּi֣y lo֣ tuka֘l shse'eto֒ kּiֽy-yirecha֤q mimּeka֙ hamּaq֔om 'ashshe֤r yibechar֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka lashs֥um shshem֖o shsha֑m kּi֥y yebarekeka֖ yehva֥h 'eloheֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if that place is too distant and you have been blessed by the LORD your God and cannot carry your tithe (because the place where the LORD will choose to put his Name is so far away),

וְכִֽי־יִרְבֶּ֨ה מִמְּךָ֜ הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ כִּ֣י לֹ֣א תוּכַ֘ל שְׂאֵתוֹ֒ כִּֽי־יִרְחַ֤ק מִמְּךָ֙ הַמָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִבְחַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לָשׂ֥וּם שְׁמ֖וֹ שָׁ֑ם כִּ֥י יְבָרֶכְךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּa֖h bּakּa֑sep vetzaretּa֤ hakּe֨sep֙ bּeya֣deka֔ vehaֽlaketּa֙ 'el-hamּaq֔om 'ashshe֥r yibecha֛r yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)then exchange your tithe for silver, and take the silver with you and go to the place the LORD your God will choose.

וְנָתַתָּ֖ה בַּכָּ֑סֶף וְצַרְתָּ֤ הַכֶּ֨סֶף֙ בְּיָ֣דְךָ֔ וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֙ אֶל־הַמָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בּֽוֹ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּa֣h hakּe֡sep bּekol֩ 'ashsher-tּe'aue֨h napeshsheka֜ bּabּaqa֣r ubatzּo֗'n ubayּa֨yin֙ ubashshּeka֔r ubeko֛l 'ashshe֥r tּiֽshshe'aleka֖ napeshshe֑ka ve'aka֣letּa shshּa֗m lipeney֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka veshsamachetּa֖ 'atּa֥h ubeyteֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Use the silver to buy whatever you like: cattle, sheep, wine or other fermented drink, or anything you wish. Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the LORD your God and rejoice.

וְנָתַתָּ֣ה הַכֶּ֡סֶף בְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁר־תְּאַוֶּ֨ה נַפְשְׁךָ֜ בַּבָּקָ֣ר וּבַצֹּ֗אן וּבַיַּ֨יִן֙ וּבַשֵּׁכָ֔ר וּבְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּֽשְׁאָלְךָ֖ נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְאָכַ֣לְתָּ שָּׁ֗ם לִפְנֵי֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ וְשָׂמַחְתָּ֖ אַתָּ֥ה וּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehalּevi֥y 'ashsher-bּishshe'are֖yka lo֣ tֽa'azebe֑nּu kּi֣y 'e֥yn l֛o che֥leq venachala֖h 'imּaֽke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And do not neglect the Levites living in your towns, for they have no allotment or inheritance of their own.

וְהַלֵּוִ֥י אֲשֶׁר־בִּשְׁעָרֶ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תַֽעַזְבֶ֑נּוּ כִּ֣י אֵ֥ין ל֛וֹ חֵ֥לֶק וְנַחֲלָ֖ה עִמָּֽךְ׃ס

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): miqetze֣h ׀ shshalo֣shsh shshani֗ym tּotziy'֙ 'et-kּal-ma'eshsar֙ tּebu'a֣teka֔ bּashshּana֖h hahi֑v vehinּachetּa֖ bּishshe'areֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At the end of every three years, bring all the tithes of that year's produce and store it in your towns,

מִקְצֵ֣ה ׀ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֗ים תּוֹצִיא֙ אֶת־כָּל־מַעְשַׂר֙ תְּבוּאָ֣תְךָ֔ בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הַהִ֑וא וְהִנַּחְתָּ֖ בִּשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba֣ halּevi֡y kּi֣y 'eֽyn-lo֩ che֨leq venachala֜h 'imּa֗ke ve֠hagּer vehayּat֤om vehaֽ'alemanah֙ 'ashshe֣r bּishshe'are֔yka ve'akel֖u veshsabe֑'u lema֤'an yebarekeka֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka bּekal-ma'ashse֥h yadeka֖ 'ashshe֥r tּa'ashseֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)so that the Levites (who have no allotment or inheritance of their own) and the foreigners, the fatherless and the widows who live in your towns may come and eat and be satisfied, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

וּבָ֣א הַלֵּוִ֡י כִּ֣י אֵֽין־לוֹ֩ חֵ֨לֶק וְנַחֲלָ֜ה עִמָּ֗ךְ וְ֠הַגֵּר וְהַיָּת֤וֹם וְהָֽאַלְמָנָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּשְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ וְאָכְל֖וּ וְשָׂבֵ֑עוּ לְמַ֤עַן יְבָרֶכְךָ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּכָל־מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃ס
