Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tizebּach֩ layhva֨h 'elohe֜yka shsh֣or vashse֗h 'ashshe֨r yiheye֥h bo֙ m֔um kּo֖l dּaba֣r ra֑ kּi֧y to'aba֛t yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka hֽu'׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not sacrifice to the LORD your God an ox or a sheep that has any defect or flaw in it, for that would be detestable to him.

לֹא־תִזְבַּח֩ לַיהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ שׁ֣וֹר וָשֶׂ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֥ה בוֹ֙ מ֔וּם כֹּ֖ל דָּבָ֣ר רָ֑ע כִּ֧י תוֹעֲבַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ הֽוּא׃ס

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yimּatze֤ beqirebּeka֙ bּe'acha֣d shshe'are֔yka 'ashsher-yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka note֣n la֑ke 'i֣yshsh 'o-'ishshּa֗h 'ashshe֨r ya'ashse֧h 'et-hara֛ bּe'eyne֥y yehvaֽh-'elohe֖yka la'abo֥r bּeriytֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If a man or woman living among you in one of the towns the LORD gives you is found doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God in violation of his covenant,

כִּֽי־יִמָּצֵ֤א בְקִרְבְּךָ֙ בְּאַחַ֣ד שְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֑ךְ אִ֣ישׁ אוֹ־אִשָּׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲשֶׂ֧ה אֶת־הָרַ֛ע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה־אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לַעֲבֹ֥ר בְּרִיתֽוֹ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֗leke vֽayּa'abod֙ 'elohi֣ym 'acheri֔ym vayּishshetּa֖chu lahe֑m velashshּe֣meshsh ׀ '֣o layּare֗cha '֛o lekal-tzeba֥ hashshּama֖yim 'ashshe֥r lo'-tziuiֽytiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and contrary to my command has worshipped other gods, bowing down to them or to the sun or the moon or the stars in the sky,

וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַֽיַּעֲבֹד֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַיִּשְׁתַּ֖חוּ לָהֶ֑ם וְלַשֶּׁ֣מֶשׁ ׀ א֣וֹ לַיָּרֵ֗חַ א֛וֹ לְכָל־צְבָ֥א הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־צִוִּֽיתִי׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehuֽgּad-leka֖ veshshama֑'etּa vedarashshetּa֣ heyte֔b vehinּe֤h 'emet֙ nak֣on hadּaba֔r ne'eshseta֛h hatּo'eba֥h hazּo֖'t bּeyishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and this has been brought to your attention, then you must investigate it thoroughly. If it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done in Israel,

וְהֻֽגַּד־לְךָ֖ וְשָׁמָ֑עְתָּ וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֣ הֵיטֵ֔ב וְהִנֵּ֤ה אֱמֶת֙ נָכ֣וֹן הַדָּבָ֔ר נֶעֶשְׂתָ֛ה הַתּוֹעֵבָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehֽotze'ta֣ 'et-ha'i֣yshsh hah֡u 'o֩ 'et-ha'ishshּa֨h hahi֜v 'ashshe֣r 'a֠shsu 'et-hadּaba֨r hara֤ hazּeh֙ 'el-shshe'are֔yka 'et-ha'i֕yshsh '֖o 'et-ha'ishshּa֑h useqaletּa֥m bּa'abani֖ym vameֽtu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)take the man or woman who has done this evil deed to your city gate and stone that person to death.

וְהֽוֹצֵאתָ֣ אֶת־הָאִ֣ישׁ הַה֡וּא אוֹ֩ אֶת־הָאִשָּׁ֨ה הַהִ֜וא אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָ֠שׂוּ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֨ר הָרָ֤ע הַזֶּה֙ אֶל־שְׁעָרֶ֔יךָ אֶת־הָאִ֕ישׁ א֖וֹ אֶת־הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וּסְקַלְתָּ֥ם בָּאֲבָנִ֖ים וָמֵֽתוּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-pּi֣y ׀ shshena֣yim 'edi֗ym '֛o shsheloshsha֥h 'edi֖ym yuma֣t hamּe֑t lo֣ yuma֔t 'al-pּi֖y 'e֥d 'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the testimony of two or three witnesses a person is to be put to death, but no one is to be put to death on the testimony of only one witness.

עַל־פִּ֣י ׀ שְׁנַ֣יִם עֵדִ֗ים א֛וֹ שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה עֵדִ֖ים יוּמַ֣ת הַמֵּ֑ת לֹ֣א יוּמַ֔ת עַל־פִּ֖י עֵ֥ד אֶחָֽד׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ya֣d ha'edi֞ym tּiֽheyeh-bּ֤o bari'shshonah֙ lahamiyt֔o veya֥d kּal-ha'a֖m bּa'acharona֑h ubiֽ'aretּa֥ hara֖ miqּirebּeֽka׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The hands of the witnesses must be the first in putting that person to death, and then the hands of all the people. You must purge the evil from among you.

יַ֣ד הָעֵדִ֞ים תִּֽהְיֶה־בּ֤וֹ בָרִאשֹׁנָה֙ לַהֲמִית֔וֹ וְיַ֥ד כָּל־הָעָ֖ם בָּאַחֲרֹנָ֑ה וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃פ

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y yipּale'֩ mimּeka֨ daba֜r lamּishshepּa֗t bּeֽyn-dּa֨m ׀ leda֜m bּeֽyn-dּi֣yn ledi֗yn ube֥yn ne֨ga'֙ lane֔ga dּibere֥y riybo֖t bּishshe'are֑yka veqametּa֣ ve'ali֔yta 'el-hamּaq֔om 'ashshe֥r yibecha֛r yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If cases come before your courts that are too difficult for you to judge, whether bloodshed, lawsuits or assaults, take them to the place the LORD your God will choose.

כִּ֣י יִפָּלֵא֩ מִמְּךָ֨ דָבָ֜ר לַמִּשְׁפָּ֗ט בֵּֽין־דָּ֨ם ׀ לְדָ֜ם בֵּֽין־דִּ֣ין לְדִ֗ין וּבֵ֥ין נֶ֨גַע֙ לָנֶ֔גַע דִּבְרֵ֥י רִיבֹ֖ת בִּשְׁעָרֶ֑יךָ וְקַמְתָּ֣ וְעָלִ֔יתָ אֶל־הַמָּק֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בּֽוֹ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): uba'ta֗ 'el-hakּohaniym֙ haleviyּi֔m ve'el-hashshּope֔t 'ashshe֥r yiheye֖h bּayּami֣ym hahe֑m vedarashshetּa֙ vehigּi֣ydu leka֔ 'e֖t dּeba֥r hamּishshepּaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Go to the Levitical priests and to the judge who is in office at that time. Inquire of them and they will give you the verdict.

וּבָאתָ֗ אֶל־הַכֹּהֲנִים֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם וְאֶל־הַשֹּׁפֵ֔ט אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִהְיֶ֖ה בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֑ם וְדָרַשְׁתָּ֙ וְהִגִּ֣ידוּ לְךָ֔ אֵ֖ת דְּבַ֥ר הַמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ashsi֗yta 'al-pּi֤y hadּabar֙ 'ashshe֣r yagּi֣ydֽu leka֔ min-hamּaq֣om hah֔u 'ashshe֖r yibecha֣r yehva֑h veshshamaretּa֣ la'ashs֔ot kּeko֖l 'ashshe֥r yorֽuka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You must act according to the decisions they give you at the place the LORD will choose. Be careful to do everything they instruct you to do.

וְעָשִׂ֗יתָ עַל־פִּ֤י הַדָּבָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַגִּ֣ידֽוּ לְךָ֔ מִן־הַמָּק֣וֹם הַה֔וּא אֲשֶׁ֖ר יִבְחַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֣ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹרֽוּךָ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-pּi֨y hatּora֜h 'ashshe֣r yor֗uka ve'al-hamּishshepּa֛t 'ashsher-yo'mer֥u leka֖ tּa'ashse֑h lo֣ tas֗ur min-hadּaba֛r 'ashsher-yagּi֥ydֽu leka֖ yami֥yn ushsemoֽ'l׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Act according to whatever they teach you and the decisions they give you. Do not turn aside from what they tell you, to the right or to the left.

עַל־פִּ֨י הַתּוֹרָ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר יוֹר֗וּךָ וְעַל־הַמִּשְׁפָּ֛ט אֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְר֥וּ לְךָ֖ תַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה לֹ֣א תָס֗וּר מִן־הַדָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר־יַגִּ֥ידֽוּ לְךָ֖ יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאל׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'i֞yshsh 'ashsher-ya'ashse֣h bezad֗on lebiletּi֨y shshemo֤'a 'el-hakּohen֙ ha'ome֞d leshsha֤ret shsham֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka '֖o 'el-hashshּope֑t umet֙ ha'i֣yshsh hah֔u ubiֽ'aretּa֥ hara֖ miyּishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Anyone who shows contempt for the judge or for the priest who stands ministering there to the LORD your God is to be put to death. You must purge the evil from Israel.

וְהָאִ֞ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה בְזָד֗וֹן לְבִלְתִּ֨י שְׁמֹ֤עַ אֶל־הַכֹּהֵן֙ הָעֹמֵ֞ד לְשָׁ֤רֶת שָׁם֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ א֖וֹ אֶל־הַשֹּׁפֵ֑ט וּמֵת֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הַה֔וּא וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-ha'a֖m yishsheme'֣u veyira֑'u velo֥ yeziyd֖un 'ֽod׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)All the people will hear and be afraid, and will not be contemptuous again.

וְכָל־הָעָ֖ם יִשְׁמְע֣וּ וְיִרָ֑אוּ וְלֹ֥א יְזִיד֖וּן עֽוֹד׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-tabo֣ 'el-ha'a֗retz 'ashshe֨r yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ note֣n la֔ke viֽyrishshetּa֖hּ veyashsha֣betּah bּa֑hּ ve'amaretּa֗ 'ashsi֤ymah 'alay֙ me֔leke kּekal-hagּoyi֖m 'ashshe֥r sebiybotaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, "Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,"

כִּֽי־תָבֹ֣א אֶל־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ נֹתֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֖הּ וְיָשַׁ֣בְתָּה בָּ֑הּ וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ אָשִׂ֤ימָה עָלַי֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ כְּכָל־הַגּוֹיִ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבֹתָֽי׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): shs֣om tּashsi֤ym 'ale֨yka֙ me֔leke 'ashshe֥r yibecha֛r yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka bּ֑o miqּe֣reb 'ache֗yka tּashsi֤ym 'ale֨yka֙ me֔leke lo֣ tuka֗l late֤t 'ale֨yka֙ 'i֣yshsh nakeri֔y 'ashshe֥r loֽ'-'achi֖yka hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)be sure to appoint over you a king the LORD your God chooses. He must be from among your fellow Israelites. Do not place a foreigner over you, one who is not an Israelite.

שׂ֣וֹם תָּשִׂ֤ים עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִבְחַ֛ר יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ בּ֑וֹ מִקֶּ֣רֶב אַחֶ֗יךָ תָּשִׂ֤ים עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ מֶ֔לֶךְ לֹ֣א תוּכַ֗ל לָתֵ֤ת עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ אִ֣ישׁ נָכְרִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־אָחִ֖יךָ הֽוּא׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): raq֮ lo'-yarebּeh-lּ֣o susiym֒ veloֽ'-yashshi֤yb 'et-ha'am֙ mitzera֔yemah lema֖'an harebּ֣ot s֑us vaֽyhvah֙ 'ama֣r lake֔m lo֣ tosip֗un lashsh֛ub bּadּe֥reke hazּe֖h 'ֽod׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king, moreover, must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself or make the people return to Egypt to get more of them, for the LORD has told you, "You are not to go back that way again."

רַק֮ לֹא־יַרְבֶּה־לּ֣וֹ סוּסִים֒ וְלֹֽא־יָשִׁ֤יב אֶת־הָעָם֙ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה לְמַ֖עַן הַרְבּ֣וֹת ס֑וּס וַֽיהוָה֙ אָמַ֣ר לָכֶ֔ם לֹ֣א תֹסִפ֗וּן לָשׁ֛וּב בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ הַזֶּ֖ה עֽוֹד׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֤ yarebּeh-lּo֙ nashshi֔ym velo֥ yas֖ur lebab֑o veke֣sep vezaha֔b lo֥ yarebּeh-lּ֖o me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold.

וְלֹ֤א יַרְבֶּה־לּוֹ֙ נָשִׁ֔ים וְלֹ֥א יָס֖וּר לְבָב֑וֹ וְכֶ֣סֶף וְזָהָ֔ב לֹ֥א יַרְבֶּה־לּ֖וֹ מְאֹֽד׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֣h keshshibetּ֔o 'a֖l kּisּe֣ mamelaketּ֑o veka֨tab l֜o 'et-mishshene֨h hatּora֤h hazּo't֙ 'al-se֔per milּipene֥y hakּohani֖ym haleviyּiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law, taken from that of the Levitical priests.

וְהָיָ֣ה כְשִׁבְתּ֔וֹ עַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֣א מַמְלַכְתּ֑וֹ וְכָ֨תַב ל֜וֹ אֶת־מִשְׁנֵ֨ה הַתּוֹרָ֤ה הַזֹּאת֙ עַל־סֵ֔פֶר מִלִּפְנֵ֥י הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים הַלְוִיִּֽם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayeta֣h 'imּ֔o veqa֥ra b֖o kּal-yeme֣y chayּa֑yv lema֣'an yilema֗d leyire'ah֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'eloha֔yv li֠shshemor 'eֽt-kּal-dּibere֞y hatּora֥h hazּo֛'t ve'et-hachuqּi֥ym ha'e֖lּeh la'ashsotaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees

וְהָיְתָ֣ה עִמּ֔וֹ וְקָ֥רָא ב֖וֹ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י חַיָּ֑יו לְמַ֣עַן יִלְמַ֗ד לְיִרְאָה֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔יו לִ֠שְׁמֹר אֶֽת־כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֞י הַתּוֹרָ֥ה הַזֹּ֛את וְאֶת־הַחֻקִּ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה לַעֲשֹׂתָֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): lebiletּi֤y rum-lebabo֙ meֽ'echa֔yv ulebiletּi֛y s֥ur min-hamּitzeva֖h yami֣yn ushsemo֑'vl lema'an֩ ya'ari֨yke yami֧ym 'al-mamelaketּ֛o h֥u ubana֖yv bּeqe֥reb yishsera'eֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)and not consider himself better than his fellow Israelites and turn from the law to the right or to the left. Then he and his descendants will reign a long time over his kingdom in Israel.

לְבִלְתִּ֤י רוּם־לְבָבוֹ֙ מֵֽאֶחָ֔יו וּלְבִלְתִּ֛י ס֥וּר מִן־הַמִּצְוָ֖ה יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול לְמַעַן֩ יַאֲרִ֨יךְ יָמִ֧ים עַל־מַמְלַכְתּ֛וֹ ה֥וּא וּבָנָ֖יו בְּקֶ֥רֶב יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס
