Chapter 2

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּe֜pen vanּisּa֤ hamּidebּa֨rah֙ dּe֣reke yam-s֔up kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r yehva֖h 'ela֑y vanּa֥sab 'et-har-shse'i֖yr yami֥ym rabּiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Then we turned back and set out toward the wilderness along the route to the Red Sea, just as the LORD had instructed me. After we had wandered around the hill country of Seir for many days,

וַנֵּ֜פֶן וַנִּסַּ֤ע הַמִּדְבָּ֨רָה֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יַם־ס֔וּף כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָ֑י וַנָּ֥סָב אֶת־הַר־שֵׂעִ֖יר יָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to me,

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): rab-lake֕m so֖b 'et-haha֣r hazּe֑h pּen֥u lake֖m tzapoֽnah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'You have made your way around this hill country long enough; now turn north.

רַב־לָכֶ֕ם סֹ֖ב אֶת־הָהָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה פְּנ֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם צָפֹֽנָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha'am֮ tza֣v le'mor֒ 'atּe֣m 'oֽberi֗ym bּigebul֙ 'acheyke֣m bּeney-'eshsa֔v hayּoshshebi֖ym bּeshse'i֑yr veyiֽyre'֣u mikּe֔m venishshemaretּe֖m me'oֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Give the people these orders: "You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so be very careful.

וְאֶת־הָעָם֮ צַ֣ו לֵאמֹר֒ אַתֶּ֣ם עֹֽבְרִ֗ים בִּגְבוּל֙ אֲחֵיכֶ֣ם בְּנֵי־עֵשָׂ֔ו הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּשֵׂעִ֑יר וְיִֽירְא֣וּ מִכֶּ֔ם וְנִשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּitegּar֣u ba֔m kּi֠y loֽ'-'etּe֤n lakem֙ meֽ'aretza֔m 'a֖d midera֣ke kּap-ra֑gel kּiֽy-yerushshּa֣h le'eshsa֔v nata֖tּiy 'et-ha֥r shse'iֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land, not even enough to put your foot on. I have given Esau the hill country of Seir as his own.

אַל־תִּתְגָּר֣וּ בָ֔ם כִּ֠י לֹֽא־אֶתֵּ֤ן לָכֶם֙ מֵֽאַרְצָ֔ם עַ֖ד מִדְרַ֣ךְ כַּף־רָ֑גֶל כִּֽי־יְרֻשָּׁ֣ה לְעֵשָׂ֔ו נָתַ֖תִּי אֶת־הַ֥ר שֵׂעִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): o֣kel tּishshebּer֧u meֽ'itּa֛m bּakּe֖sep va'akaletּe֑m vegam-ma֜yim tּiker֧u me'itּa֛m bּakּe֖sep ushshetiyteֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You must pay them in silver for any food you eat and any water you drink."'

אֹ֣כֶל תִּשְׁבְּר֧וּ מֵֽאִתָּ֛ם בַּכֶּ֖סֶף וַאֲכַלְתֶּ֑ם וְגַם־מַ֜יִם תִּכְר֧וּ מֵאִתָּ֛ם בַּכֶּ֖סֶף וּשְׁתִיתֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ yehva֨h 'elohe֜yka bּeֽrakeka֗ bּekol֙ ma'ashse֣h yade֔ka yada֣ leketּeka֔ 'et-hamּidebּa֥r hagּado֖l hazּe֑h ze֣h ׀ 'arebּa'i֣ym shshana֗h yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ 'imּa֔ke lo֥ chasa֖retּa dּabaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you, and you have not lacked anything.

כִּי֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ בֵּֽרַכְךָ֗ בְּכֹל֙ מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יָדֶ֔ךָ יָדַ֣ע לֶכְתְּךָ֔ אֶת־הַמִּדְבָּ֥ר הַגָּדֹ֖ל הַזֶּ֑ה זֶ֣ה ׀ אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֗ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ לֹ֥א חָסַ֖רְתָּ דָּבָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽnּa'abo֞r me'e֧t 'ache֣ynu beney-'eshsa֗v hayּoֽshshebiym֙ bּeshse'i֔yr midּe֨reke֙ haֽ'araba֔h me'eyla֖t ume'etzeyo֣n gּa֑ber s vanּe֨pen֙ vaֽnּa'abo֔r dּe֖reke midebּa֥r mo'aֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"So we bypassed our relatives, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes from Elath and Ezion Geber, and travelled along the desert road of Moab.

וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֞ר מֵאֵ֧ת אַחֵ֣ינוּ בְנֵי־עֵשָׂ֗ו הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ בְּשֵׂעִ֔יר מִדֶּ֨רֶךְ֙ הָֽעֲרָבָ֔ה מֵאֵילַ֖ת וּמֵעֶצְיֹ֣ן גָּ֑בֶר ס וַנֵּ֨פֶן֙ וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֔ר דֶּ֖רֶךְ מִדְבַּ֥ר מוֹאָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'ela֗y 'el-tּa֨tzar֙ 'et-mo'a֔b ve'al-tּitegּa֥r bּa֖m milechama֑h kּi֠y loֽ'-'etּe֨n leka֤ meֽ'aretzo֙ yerushshּa֔h kּi֣y libeney-l֔ot nata֥tּiy 'et-'a֖r yerushshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Then the LORD said to me, 'Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession.'"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֵלַ֗י אֶל־תָּ֨צַר֙ אֶת־מוֹאָ֔ב וְאַל־תִּתְגָּ֥ר בָּ֖ם מִלְחָמָ֑ה כִּ֠י לֹֽא־אֶתֵּ֨ן לְךָ֤ מֵֽאַרְצוֹ֙ יְרֻשָּׁ֔ה כִּ֣י לִבְנֵי־ל֔וֹט נָתַ֥תִּי אֶת־עָ֖ר יְרֻשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha'emi֥ym lepani֖ym ya֣shshebu ba֑hּ 'a֣m gּad֥ol vera֛b vara֖m kּa'anaqiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)(The Emites used to live there, a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites.

הָאֵמִ֥ים לְפָנִ֖ים יָ֣שְׁבוּ בָ֑הּ עַ֣ם גָּד֥וֹל וְרַ֛ב וָרָ֖ם כָּעֲנָקִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): repa'i֛ym yechashsheb֥u 'ap-he֖m kּa'anaqi֑ym vehamּo֣'abi֔ym yiqere'֥u lahe֖m 'emiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Like the Anakites, they too were considered Rephaites, but the Moabites called them Emites.

רְפָאִ֛ים יֵחָשְׁב֥וּ אַף־הֵ֖ם כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים וְהַמֹּ֣אָבִ֔ים יִקְרְא֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם אֵמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeshse'i֞yr yashsheb֣u hachoriym֮ lepaniym֒ ubene֧y 'eshsa֣v yiֽyrashsh֗um vayּashshemiydum֙ mipּeneyhe֔m vayּeshsheb֖u tּachetּa֑m kּa'ashshe֧r 'ashsa֣h yishsera'e֗l le'e֨retz֙ yerushshּat֔o 'ashsher-nata֥n yehva֖h laheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land the LORD gave them as their possession.)

וּבְשֵׂעִ֞יר יָשְׁב֣וּ הַחֹרִים֮ לְפָנִים֒ וּבְנֵ֧י עֵשָׂ֣ו יִֽירָשׁ֗וּם וַיַּשְׁמִידוּם֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ תַּחְתָּ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר עָשָׂ֣ה יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לְאֶ֨רֶץ֙ יְרֻשָּׁת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן יְהוָ֖ה לָהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): atּa֗h qu֛mu ve'iber֥u lake֖m 'et-na֣chal za֑red vaֽnּa'abo֖r 'et-na֥chal zaֽred׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And the LORD said, 'Now get up and cross the Zered Valley.' So we crossed the valley.

עַתָּ֗ה קֻ֛מוּ וְעִבְר֥וּ לָכֶ֖ם אֶת־נַ֣חַל זָ֑רֶד וַֽנַּעֲבֹ֖ר אֶת־נַ֥חַל זָֽרֶד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayּami֞ym 'ashsher-hala֣kenu ׀ miqּade֣shsh bּarene֗'a 'a֤d 'ashsher-'aba֨renu֙ 'et-na֣chal ze֔red shsheloshshi֥ym ushshemone֖h shshana֑h 'ad-tּo֨m kּal-hadּ֜or 'aneshshe֤y hamּilechamah֙ miqּe֣reb haֽmּachane֔h kּa'ashshe֛r nishshebּa֥ yehva֖h laheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.

וְהַיָּמִ֞ים אֲשֶׁר־הָלַ֣כְנוּ ׀ מִקָּדֵ֣שׁ בַּרְנֵ֗עַ עַ֤ד אֲשֶׁר־עָבַ֨רְנוּ֙ אֶת־נַ֣חַל זֶ֔רֶד שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנֶ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה עַד־תֹּ֨ם כָּל־הַדּ֜וֹר אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ מִקֶּ֣רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נִשְׁבַּ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה לָהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֤m yad-yehvah֙ ha֣yetah bּa֔m lehumּa֖m miqּe֣reb haֽmּachane֑h 'a֖d tּumּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD's hand was against them until he had completely eliminated them from the camp.

וְגַ֤ם יַד־יְהוָה֙ הָ֣יְתָה בָּ֔ם לְהֻמָּ֖ם מִקֶּ֣רֶב הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה עַ֖ד תֻּמָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֨y ka'ashsher-tּa֜mּu kּal-'aneshshe֧y hamּilechama֛h lam֖ut miqּe֥reb ha'aֽm׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Now when the last of these fighting men among the people had died,

וַיְהִ֨י כַאֲשֶׁר־תַּ֜מּוּ כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֧י הַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה לָמ֖וּת מִקֶּ֥רֶב הָעָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to me,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): atּa֨h 'obe֥r hayּ֛om 'et-gּeb֥ul mo'a֖b 'et-'aֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'Today you are to pass by the region of Moab at Ar.

אַתָּ֨ה עֹבֵ֥ר הַיּ֛וֹם אֶת־גְּב֥וּל מוֹאָ֖ב אֶת־עָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veqarabetּa֗ m֚ul bּene֣y 'amּ֔on 'al-tּetzure֖m ve'al-tּitegּa֣r bּa֑m kּi֣y loֽ'-'e֠tּen me'e֨retz bּeney-'amּ֤on leka֙ yerushshּa֔h kּi֥y libeney-l֖ot netatּi֥yha yerushshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot.'"

וְקָרַבְתָּ֗ מ֚וּל בְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן אַל־תְּצֻרֵ֖ם וְאַל־תִּתְגָּ֣ר בָּ֑ם כִּ֣י לֹֽא־אֶ֠תֵּן מֵאֶ֨רֶץ בְּנֵי־עַמּ֤וֹן לְךָ֙ יְרֻשָּׁ֔ה כִּ֥י לִבְנֵי־ל֖וֹט נְתַתִּ֥יהָ יְרֻשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): eֽretz-repa'i֥ym tּechashshe֖b 'ap-hi֑v repa'i֤ym yaֽshshebu-bahּ֙ lepani֔ym vehaֽ'amּoni֔ym yiqere'֥u lahe֖m zamezumּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)(That also was considered a land of the Rephaites, who used to live there; but the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.

אֶֽרֶץ־רְפָאִ֥ים תֵּחָשֵׁ֖ב אַף־הִ֑וא רְפָאִ֤ים יָֽשְׁבוּ־בָהּ֙ לְפָנִ֔ים וְהָֽעַמֹּנִ֔ים יִקְרְא֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם זַמְזֻמִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֣m gּad֥ol vera֛b vara֖m kּa'anaqi֑ym vayּashshemiyde֤m yehvah֙ mipּeneyhe֔m vayּiyrashshu֖m vayּeshsheb֥u tachetּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They were a people strong and numerous, and as tall as the Anakites. the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place.

עַ֣ם גָּד֥וֹל וְרַ֛ב וָרָ֖ם כָּעֲנָקִ֑ים וַיַּשְׁמִידֵ֤ם יְהוָה֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּירָשֻׁ֖ם וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ תַחְתָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa'ashshe֤r 'ashsah֙ libene֣y 'eshsa֔v hayּoshshebi֖ym bּeshse'i֑yr 'ashshe֨r hishshemi֤yd 'et-hachoriy֙ mipּeneyhe֔m vayּiֽyrashshum֙ vayּeshsheb֣u tachetּa֔m 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who lived in Seir, when he destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day.

כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ לִבְנֵ֣י עֵשָׂ֔ו הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּשֵׂעִ֑יר אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִשְׁמִ֤יד אֶת־הַחֹרִי֙ מִפְּנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּֽירָשֻׁם֙ וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ תַחְתָּ֔ם עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaֽ'aui֛ym hayּoshshebi֥ym bּachatzeri֖ym 'ad-'azּa֑h kּapetּoriym֙ hayּotze'i֣ym mikּapetּ֔or hishshemiydu֖m vayּeshsheb֥u tachetּaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And as for the Avvites who lived in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorites coming out from Caphtor destroyed them and settled in their place.)

וְהָֽעַוִּ֛ים הַיֹּשְׁבִ֥ים בַּחֲצֵרִ֖ים עַד־עַזָּ֑ה כַּפְתֹּרִים֙ הַיֹּצְאִ֣ים מִכַּפְתּ֔וֹר הִשְׁמִידֻ֖ם וַיֵּשְׁב֥וּ תַחְתָּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): q֣umu sּe'֗u ve'iberu֮ 'et-na֣chal 'arenon֒ re'e֣h nata֣tּiy be֠yadeka 'et-siycho֨n meֽleke-cheshshebּ֧on hֽa'emori֛y ve'et-'aretz֖o hache֣l ra֑shsh vehitegּa֥r bּ֖o milechamaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Set out now and cross the Arnon Gorge. See, I have handed over to you Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his country. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.

ק֣וּמוּ סְּע֗וּ וְעִבְרוּ֮ אֶת־נַ֣חַל אַרְנֹן֒ רְאֵ֣ה נָתַ֣תִּי בְ֠יָדְךָ אֶת־סִיחֹ֨ן מֶֽלֶךְ־חֶשְׁבּ֧וֹן הָֽאֱמֹרִ֛י וְאֶת־אַרְצ֖וֹ הָחֵ֣ל רָ֑שׁ וְהִתְגָּ֥ר בּ֖וֹ מִלְחָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayּ֣om hazּe֗h 'achel֙ tּe֤t pּachedּeka֙ veyire'a֣teka֔ 'al-pּeney֙ haֽ'amּi֔ym tּa֖chat kּal-hashshּama֑yim 'ashshe֤r yishsheme'un֙ shshime'aka֔ veragez֥u vechal֖u mipּaneֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This very day I will begin to put the terror and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear reports of you and will tremble and be in anguish because of you."

הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֗ה אָחֵל֙ תֵּ֤ת פַּחְדְּךָ֙ וְיִרְאָ֣תְךָ֔ עַל־פְּנֵי֙ הָֽעַמִּ֔ים תַּ֖חַת כָּל־הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִשְׁמְעוּן֙ שִׁמְעֲךָ֔ וְרָגְז֥וּ וְחָל֖וּ מִפָּנֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'eshshela֤ch male'akiym֙ mimּidebּa֣r qedem֔ot 'el-siych֖on me֣leke cheshshebּ֑on dּibere֥y shshal֖om le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"From the desert of Kedemoth I sent messengers to Sihon king of Heshbon offering peace and saying,

וָאֶשְׁלַ֤ח מַלְאָכִים֙ מִמִּדְבַּ֣ר קְדֵמ֔וֹת אֶל־סִיח֖וֹן מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֑וֹן דִּבְרֵ֥י שָׁל֖וֹם לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e'ebּera֣h be'aretze֔ka bּadּe֥reke bּadּe֖reke 'ele֑ke lo֥ 'as֖ur yami֥yn ushsemoֽ'vl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)'Let us pass through your country. We will stay on the main road; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left.

אֶעְבְּרָ֣ה בְאַרְצֶ֔ךָ בַּדֶּ֥רֶךְ בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֵלֵ֑ךְ לֹ֥א אָס֖וּר יָמִ֥ין וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): o֣kel bּakּe֤sep tּashshebּire֨niy֙ ve'aka֔letּiy uma֛yim bּakּe֥sep tּitּen-li֖y veshshati֑ytiy ra֖q 'e'ebּera֥h beragelaֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Sell us food to eat and water to drink for silver. Just let us pass through on foot,

אֹ֣כֶל בַּכֶּ֤סֶף תַּשְׁבִּרֵ֨נִי֙ וְאָכַ֔לְתִּי וּמַ֛יִם בַּכֶּ֥סֶף תִּתֶּן־לִ֖י וְשָׁתִ֑יתִי רַ֖ק אֶעְבְּרָ֥ה בְרַגְלָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa'ashshe֨r 'ֽashsu-li֜y bּene֣y 'eshsa֗v hayּoֽshshebiym֙ bּeshse'i֔yr vehamּ֣o'abi֔ym hayּoshshebi֖ym bּe'a֑r 'a֤d 'ashsheֽr-'eֽ'ebor֙ 'et-hayּaredּe֔n 'el-ha'a֕retz 'ashsher-yehva֥h 'elohe֖ynu note֥n laֽnu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)as the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir, and the Moabites, who live in Ar, did for us, until we cross the Jordan into the land the LORD our God is giving us.'

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָֽשׂוּ־לִ֜י בְּנֵ֣י עֵשָׂ֗ו הַיֹּֽשְׁבִים֙ בְּשֵׂעִ֔יר וְהַמּ֣וֹאָבִ֔ים הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּעָ֑ר עַ֤ד אֲשֶֽׁר־אֶֽעֱבֹר֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן אֶל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֣ 'aba֗h siychon֙ me֣leke cheshshebּ֔on ha'abire֖nu bּ֑o kּiֽy-hiqeshshah֩ yehva֨h 'elohe֜yka 'et-ruch֗o ve'imּetz֙ 'et-lebab֔o lema֛'an tּitּ֥o beyadeka֖ kּayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)But Sihon king of Heshbon refused to let us pass through. For the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate in order to give him into your hands, as he has now done.

וְלֹ֣א אָבָ֗ה סִיחֹן֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֶשְׁבּ֔וֹן הַעֲבִרֵ֖נוּ בּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־הִקְשָׁה֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ אֶת־רוּח֗וֹ וְאִמֵּץ֙ אֶת־לְבָב֔וֹ לְמַ֛עַן תִּתּ֥וֹ בְיָדְךָ֖ כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'ela֔y re'e֗h haֽchilּo֨tiy֙ tּe֣t lepane֔yka 'et-siycho֖n ve'et-'aretz֑o hache֣l ra֔shsh lare֖shshet 'et-'aretzֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD said to me, 'See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his country over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֵלַ֔י רְאֵ֗ה הַֽחִלֹּ֨תִי֙ תֵּ֣ת לְפָנֶ֔יךָ אֶת־סִיחֹ֖ן וְאֶת־אַרְצ֑וֹ הָחֵ֣ל רָ֔שׁ לָרֶ֖שֶׁת אֶת־אַרְצֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֩ siycho֨n liqera'te֜nu h֧u vekal-'amּ֛o lamּilechama֖h yaֽhetzah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"When Sihon and all his army came out to meet us in battle at Jahaz,

וַיֵּצֵא֩ סִיחֹ֨ן לִקְרָאתֵ֜נוּ ה֧וּא וְכָל־עַמּ֛וֹ לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה יָֽהְצָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּitּene֛hu yehva֥h 'elohe֖ynu lepane֑ynu vanּa֥ke 'ot֛o ve'et-bnv bּana֖yv ve'et-kּal-'amּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD our God delivered him over to us and we struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army.

וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֛הוּ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ לְפָנֵ֑ינוּ וַנַּ֥ךְ אֹת֛וֹ וְאֶת־בנו בָּנָ֖יו וְאֶת־כָּל־עַמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּilekּo֤d 'et-kּal-'arayv֙ bּa'e֣t hahi֔v vaֽnּacharem֙ 'et-kּal-'i֣yr meti֔m vehanּashshi֖ym vehatּa֑p lo֥ hishshe'a֖renu shsariֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At that time we took all his towns and completely destroyed them, men, women and children. We left no survivors.

וַנִּלְכֹּ֤ד אֶת־כָּל־עָרָיו֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא וַֽנַּחֲרֵם֙ אֶת־כָּל־עִ֣יר מְתִ֔ם וְהַנָּשִׁ֖ים וְהַטָּ֑ף לֹ֥א הִשְׁאַ֖רְנוּ שָׂרִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ra֥q habּehema֖h bּaza֣zenu la֑nu ushshela֥l he'ari֖ym 'ashshe֥r lakaֽdenu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But the livestock and the plunder from the towns we had captured we carried off for ourselves.

רַ֥ק הַבְּהֵמָ֖ה בָּזַ֣זְנוּ לָ֑נוּ וּשְׁלַ֥ל הֶעָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָכָֽדְנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): meֽ'aro'e֡r 'ashsher֩ 'al-shsepat-na֨chal 'areno֜n veha'i֨yr 'ashshe֤r bּanּa֨chal֙ ve'ad-hagּile'a֔d lo֤ haֽyetah֙ qireya֔h 'ashshe֥r shsageba֖h mimּe֑nּu 'et-hakּo֕l nata֛n yehva֥h 'elohe֖ynu lepaneֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Gorge, and from the town in the gorge, even as far as Gilead, not one town was too strong for us. the LORD our God gave us all of them.

מֵֽעֲרֹעֵ֡ר אֲשֶׁר֩ עַל־שְׂפַת־נַ֨חַל אַרְנֹ֜ן וְהָעִ֨יר אֲשֶׁ֤ר בַּנַּ֨חַל֙ וְעַד־הַגִּלְעָ֔ד לֹ֤א הָֽיְתָה֙ קִרְיָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׂגְבָ֖ה מִמֶּ֑נּוּ אֶת־הַכֹּ֕ל נָתַ֛ן יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ לְפָנֵֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ra֛q 'el-'e֥retz bּeney-'amּ֖on lo֣ qara֑betּa kּal-ya֞d na֤chal yabּoq֙ ve'are֣y haha֔r veko֥l 'ashsher-tziua֖h yehva֥h 'eloheֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)However, in obedience to the command of the LORD our God, you did not encroach on any of the land of the Ammonites, neither the region along the Jabbok River nor the towns in the hill country."

רַ֛ק אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ בְּנֵי־עַמּ֖וֹן לֹ֣א קָרָ֑בְתָּ כָּל־יַ֞ד נַ֤חַל יַבֹּק֙ וְעָרֵ֣י הָהָ֔ר וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖ה יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃
