Chapter 23
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yiqּa֥ch 'i֖yshsh 'et-'e֣shshet 'abi֑yv velo֥ yegalּe֖h kּena֥p 'abiֽyv׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the LORD.

לֹא־יִקַּ֥ח אִ֖ישׁ אֶת־אֵ֣שֶׁת אָבִ֑יו וְלֹ֥א יְגַלֶּ֖ה כְּנַ֥ף אָבִֽיו׃ס

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yabo֧ petzֽu'a-dּakּa֛ uker֥ut shshapeka֖h bּiqeha֥l yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.

לֹֽא־יָבֹ֧א פְצֽוּעַ־דַּכָּ֛א וּכְר֥וּת שָׁפְכָ֖ה בִּקְהַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ס

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yabo֥ mameze֖r bּiqeha֣l yehva֑h gּa֚m dּ֣or 'ashsiyri֔y lo'-ya֥bo l֖o bּiqeha֥l yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation.

לֹא־יָבֹ֥א מַמְזֵ֖ר בִּקְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֑ה גַּ֚ם דּ֣וֹר עֲשִׂירִ֔י לֹא־יָ֥בֹא ל֖וֹ בִּקְהַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ס

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yabo֧ 'amּoni֛y umo'abi֖y bּiqeha֣l yehva֑h gּa֚m dּ֣or 'ashsiyri֔y lo'-yabo֥ lahe֛m bּiqeha֥l yehva֖h 'ad-'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you.

לֹֽא־יָבֹ֧א עַמּוֹנִ֛י וּמוֹאָבִ֖י בִּקְהַ֣ל יְהוָ֑ה גַּ֚ם דּ֣וֹר עֲשִׂירִ֔י לֹא־יָבֹ֥א לָהֶ֛ם בִּקְהַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-dּeba֞r 'ashshe֨r lo'-qidּem֤u 'etekem֙ bּalּe֣chem ubamּa֔yim bּadּe֖reke bּetze'teke֣m mimּitzera֑yim va'ashsher֩ shsaka֨r 'ale֜yka 'et-bּile'a֣m bּen-bּe'֗or mipּet֛or 'ara֥m nahara֖yim leqaֽleleֽkּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you.

עַל־דְּבַ֞ר אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹא־קִדְּמ֤וּ אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּלֶּ֣חֶם וּבַמַּ֔יִם בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ בְּצֵאתְכֶ֣ם מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַאֲשֶׁר֩ שָׂכַ֨ר עָלֶ֜יךָ אֶת־בִּלְעָ֣ם בֶּן־בְּע֗וֹר מִפְּת֛וֹר אֲרַ֥ם נַהֲרַ֖יִם לְקַֽלְלֶֽךָּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-'aba֞h yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ lishshemo֣'a 'el-bּile'a֔m vayּahapoke֩ yehva֨h 'elohe֧yka lּeka֛ 'et-haqּelala֖h liberaka֑h kּi֥y 'aheֽbeka֖ yehva֥h 'eloheֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live.

וְלֹֽא־אָבָ֞ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ לִשְׁמֹ֣עַ אֶל־בִּלְעָ֔ם וַיַּהֲפֹךְ֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֧יךָ לְּךָ֛ אֶת־הַקְּלָלָ֖ה לִבְרָכָ֑ה כִּ֥י אֲהֵֽבְךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tidero֥shsh shsheloma֖m vetobata֑m kּal-yame֖yka le'olaֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country.

לֹא־תִדְרֹ֥שׁ שְׁלֹמָ֖ם וְטֹבָתָ֑ם כָּל־יָמֶ֖יךָ לְעוֹלָֽם׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-teta'e֣b 'adomi֔y kּi֥y 'achi֖yka h֑u s lo'-teta'e֣b mitzeri֔y kּiy-ge֖r hayi֥yta be'aretzֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.

לֹֽא־תְתַעֵ֣ב אֲדֹמִ֔י כִּ֥י אָחִ֖יךָ ה֑וּא ס לֹא־תְתַעֵ֣ב מִצְרִ֔י כִּי־גֵ֖ר הָיִ֥יתָ בְאַרְצֽוֹ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּani֛ym 'ashsher-yiualed֥u lahe֖m dּ֣or shsheliyshshi֑y yabo֥ lahe֖m bּiqeha֥l yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure.

בָּנִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־יִוָּלְד֥וּ לָהֶ֖ם דּ֣וֹר שְׁלִישִׁ֑י יָבֹ֥א לָהֶ֖ם בִּקְהַ֥ל יְהוָֽה׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-tetze֥ machane֖h 'al-'oyebe֑yka veni֨shshemaretּa֔ mikּo֖l dּaba֥r raֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there.

כִּֽי־תֵצֵ֥א מַחֲנֶ֖ה עַל־אֹיְבֶ֑יךָ וְנִ֨שְׁמַרְתָּ֔ מִכֹּ֖ל דָּבָ֥ר רָֽע׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yiheye֤h beka֙ 'i֔yshsh 'ashshe֛r lo'-yiheye֥h tah֖or miqּereh-la֑yelah veyatza'֙ 'el-mich֣utz laֽmּachane֔h lo֥ yabo֖ 'el-tּ֥oke haֽmּachaneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp.

כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֤ה בְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־יִהְיֶ֥ה טָה֖וֹר מִקְּרֵה־לָ֑יְלָה וְיָצָא֙ אֶל־מִח֣וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֔ה לֹ֥א יָבֹ֖א אֶל־תּ֥וֹךְ הַֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֥h lipenֽot-'e֖reb yirecha֣tz bּamּa֑yim ukebo֣ hashshּe֔meshsh yabo֖ 'el-tּ֥oke haֽmּachaneh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself.

וְהָיָ֥ה לִפְנֽוֹת־עֶ֖רֶב יִרְחַ֣ץ בַּמָּ֑יִם וּכְבֹ֣א הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ יָבֹ֖א אֶל־תּ֥וֹךְ הַֽמַּחֲנֶה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyad֙ tּiheye֣h leka֔ mich֖utz laֽmּachane֑h veyatza֥'ta shsha֖mּah chֽutz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement.

וְיָד֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה לְךָ֔ מִח֖וּץ לַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וְיָצָ֥אתָ שָׁ֖מָּה חֽוּץ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyate֛d tּiheye֥h leka֖ 'al-'azene֑ka vehayah֙ bּeshshibetּeka֣ ch֔utz vechaparetּa֣h ba֔hּ veshshabetּa֖ vekisּi֥yta 'et-tze'ateֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you.

וְיָתֵ֛ד תִּהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֖ עַל־אֲזֵנֶ֑ךָ וְהָיָה֙ בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ֣ ח֔וּץ וְחָפַרְתָּ֣ה בָ֔הּ וְשַׁבְתָּ֖ וְכִסִּ֥יתָ אֶת־צֵאָתֶֽךָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy֩ yehva֨h 'elohe֜yka mitehalּe֣ke ׀ bּeqe֣reb machane֗ka lehatzּiֽyleka֙ velate֤t 'oyebe֨yka֙ lepane֔yka vehaya֥h machane֖yka qad֑oshsh veloֽ'-yire'e֤h beka֙ 'ereva֣t dּaba֔r veshsha֖b me'achareֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master.

כִּי֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ מִתְהַלֵּ֣ךְ ׀ בְּקֶ֣רֶב מַחֲנֶ֗ךָ לְהַצִּֽילְךָ֙ וְלָתֵ֤ת אֹיְבֶ֨יךָ֙ לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְהָיָ֥ה מַחֲנֶ֖יךָ קָד֑וֹשׁ וְלֹֽא־יִרְאֶ֤ה בְךָ֙ עֶרְוַ֣ת דָּבָ֔ר וְשָׁ֖ב מֵאַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃ס

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tasegּi֥yr 'e֖bed 'el-'adona֑yv 'ashsher-yinּatze֥l 'ele֖yka me'i֥m 'adonaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them.

לֹא־תַסְגִּ֥יר עֶ֖בֶד אֶל־אֲדֹנָ֑יו אֲשֶׁר־יִנָּצֵ֥ל אֵלֶ֖יךָ מֵעִ֥ם אֲדֹנָֽיו׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): imּeka֞ yeshshe֣b bּeqirebּeka֗ bּamּaq֧om 'ashsher-yibecha֛r bּe'acha֥d shshe'are֖yka bּatּ֣ob l֑o lo֖ tּoneֽnּu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute.

עִמְּךָ֞ יֵשֵׁ֣ב בְּקִרְבְּךָ֗ בַּמָּק֧וֹם אֲשֶׁר־יִבְחַ֛ר בְּאַחַ֥ד שְׁעָרֶ֖יךָ בַּטּ֣וֹב ל֑וֹ לֹ֖א תּוֹנֶֽנּוּ׃ס

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tiheye֥h qedeshsha֖h mibּen֣ot yishsera'e֑l veloֽ'-yiheye֥h qade֖shsh mibּene֥y yishsera'el׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your God detests them both.

לֹא־תִהְיֶ֥ה קְדֵשָׁ֖ה מִבְּנ֣וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה קָדֵ֖שׁ מִבְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵל׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tabiy'֩ 'etena֨n zona֜h umechi֣yr kּe֗leb bּe֛yt yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka lekal-ne֑der kּi֧y to'aba֛t yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka gּam-shsheneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest.

לֹא־תָבִיא֩ אֶתְנַ֨ן זוֹנָ֜ה וּמְחִ֣יר כֶּ֗לֶב בֵּ֛ית יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לְכָל־נֶ֑דֶר כִּ֧י תוֹעֲבַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ גַּם־שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tashshּi֣yke le'achi֔yka ne֥shsheke kּe֖sep ne֣shsheke 'o֑kel ne֕shsheke kּal-dּaba֖r 'ashshe֥r yishshּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess.

לֹא־תַשִּׁ֣יךְ לְאָחִ֔יךָ נֶ֥שֶׁךְ כֶּ֖סֶף נֶ֣שֶׁךְ אֹ֑כֶל נֶ֕שֶׁךְ כָּל־דָּבָ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִשָּֽׁךְ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): lanּakeri֣y tashshּi֔yke ule'achi֖yka lo֣ tashshּi֑yke lema֨'an yebarekeka֜ yehva֣h 'elohe֗yka bּekol֙ mishshela֣ch yade֔ka 'al-ha'a֕retz 'ashsher-'atּa֥h ba'-shsha֖mּah lerishshetּaֽhּ׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.

לַנָּכְרִ֣י תַשִּׁ֔יךְ וּלְאָחִ֖יךָ לֹ֣א תַשִּׁ֑יךְ לְמַ֨עַן יְבָרֶכְךָ֜ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ בְּכֹל֙ מִשְׁלַ֣ח יָדֶ֔ךָ עַל־הָאָ֕רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־אַתָּ֥ה בָא־שָׁ֖מָּה לְרִשְׁתָּֽהּ׃ס

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-tidּo֥r ne֨der֙ layhva֣h 'elohe֔yka lo֥ te'ache֖r leshshalּem֑o kּiֽy-dּaro֨shsh yidereshshe֜nּu yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ meֽ'imּa֔ke vehaya֥h beka֖ cheֽte'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty.

כִּֽי־תִדֹּ֥ר נֶ֨דֶר֙ לַיהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ לֹ֥א תְאַחֵ֖ר לְשַׁלְּמ֑וֹ כִּֽי־דָּרֹ֨שׁ יִדְרְשֶׁ֜נּוּ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ מֵֽעִמָּ֔ךְ וְהָיָ֥ה בְךָ֖ חֵֽטְא׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): veki֥y techedּa֖l linedּo֑r loֽ'-yiheye֥h beka֖ cheֽte'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth.

וְכִ֥י תֶחְדַּ֖ל לִנְדֹּ֑ר לֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה בְךָ֖ חֵֽטְא׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): motza֥ shsepate֖yka tּishshemo֣r ve'ashsi֑yta kּa'ashshe֨r nada֜retּa layhva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ nedaba֔h 'ashshe֥r dּibּa֖retּa bּepiֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)If you enter your neighbour's vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket.

מוֹצָ֥א שְׂפָתֶ֖יךָ תִּשְׁמֹ֣ר וְעָשִׂ֑יתָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר נָדַ֜רְתָּ לַיהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ נְדָבָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ בְּפִֽיךָ׃ס

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y tabo'֙ bּeke֣rem re'e֔ka ve'akaletּa֧ 'anabi֛ym kּenapeshsheka֖ shsabe'e֑ka ve'eֽl-kּeleyeka֖ lo֥ titּeֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)If you enter your neighbour's grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain.

כִּ֤י תָבֹא֙ בְּכֶ֣רֶם רֵעֶ֔ךָ וְאָכַלְתָּ֧ עֲנָבִ֛ים כְּנַפְשְׁךָ֖ שָׂבְעֶ֑ךָ וְאֶֽל־כֶּלְיְךָ֖ לֹ֥א תִתֵּֽן׃ס

26

כִּ֤י תָבֹא֙ בְּקָמַ֣ת רֵעֶ֔ךָ וְקָטַפְתָּ֥ מְלִילֹ֖ת בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וְחֶרְמֵשׁ֙ לֹ֣א תָנִ֔יף עַ֖ל קָמַ֥ת רֵעֶֽךָ׃ס
