Deuteronomy

Chapter 24
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yiqּa֥ch 'i֛yshsh 'ishshּa֖h ube'ala֑hּ vehaya֞h 'im-lo֧ timetza'-che֣n bּe'eyna֗yv kּiy-ma֤tza bahּ֙ 'ereva֣t dּaba֔r veka֨tab la֜hּ se֤per kּeriytut֙ venata֣n bּeyada֔hּ veshshilּecha֖hּ mibּeytֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If a man marries a woman who becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house,

כִּֽי־יִקַּ֥ח אִ֛ישׁ אִשָּׁ֖ה וּבְעָלָ֑הּ וְהָיָ֞ה אִם־לֹ֧א תִמְצָא־חֵ֣ן בְּעֵינָ֗יו כִּי־מָ֤צָא בָהּ֙ עֶרְוַ֣ת דָּבָ֔ר וְכָ֨תַב לָ֜הּ סֵ֤פֶר כְּרִיתֻת֙ וְנָתַ֣ן בְּיָדָ֔הּ וְשִׁלְּחָ֖הּ מִבֵּיתֽוֹ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatze'a֖h mibּeyt֑o vehaleka֖h vehayeta֥h le'iyshsh-'acheֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and if after she leaves his house she becomes the wife of another man,

וְיָצְאָ֖ה מִבֵּית֑וֹ וְהָלְכָ֖ה וְהָיְתָ֥ה לְאִישׁ־אַחֵֽר׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): ushsene'ahּ֮ ha'i֣yshsh ha'acharon֒ veka֨tab la֜hּ se֤per kּeriytut֙ venata֣n bּeyada֔hּ veshshilּecha֖hּ mibּeyt֑o '֣o ki֤y yamut֙ ha'i֣yshsh ha'achar֔on 'ashsher-leqacha֥hּ l֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and her second husband dislikes her and writes her a certificate of divorce, gives it to her and sends her from his house, or if he dies,

וּשְׂנֵאָהּ֮ הָאִ֣ישׁ הָאַחֲרוֹן֒ וְכָ֨תַב לָ֜הּ סֵ֤פֶר כְּרִיתֻת֙ וְנָתַ֣ן בְּיָדָ֔הּ וְשִׁלְּחָ֖הּ מִבֵּית֑וֹ א֣וֹ כִ֤י יָמוּת֙ הָאִ֣ישׁ הָאַחֲר֔וֹן אֲשֶׁר־לְקָחָ֥הּ ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yuka֣l bּa'ela֣hּ hari'shsh֣on 'ashsheֽr-shshi֠lּechahּ lashsh֨ub leqachetּa֜hּ lihey֧ot l֣o le'ishshּa֗h 'acharey֙ 'ashshe֣r hutּamּa֔'ah kּiֽy-to'eba֥h hi֖v lipene֣y yehva֑h velo֤ tachatiy'֙ 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashsher֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka note֥n leka֖ nachalaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)then her first husband, who divorced her, is not allowed to marry her again after she has been defiled. That would be detestable in the eyes of the LORD. Do not bring sin upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance.

לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל בַּעְלָ֣הּ הָרִאשׁ֣וֹן אֲשֶֽׁר־שִׁ֠לְּחָהּ לָשׁ֨וּב לְקַחְתָּ֜הּ לִהְי֧וֹת ל֣וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֗ה אַחֲרֵי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֻטַּמָּ֔אָה כִּֽי־תוֹעֵבָ֥ה הִ֖וא לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְלֹ֤א תַחֲטִיא֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָֽה׃ס

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yiqּa֥ch 'iyshsh֙ 'ishshּa֣h chadashsha֔h lo֤ yetze'֙ bּatzּaba֔ velo'-ya'abo֥r 'ala֖yv lekal-dּaba֑r naqi֞y yiheye֤h lebeyto֙ shshana֣h 'echa֔t veshsimּa֖ch 'et-'ishshetּ֥o 'ashsher-laqaֽch׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)If a man has recently married, he must not be sent to war or have any other duty laid on him. For one year he is to be free to stay at home and bring happiness to the wife he has married.

כִּֽי־יִקַּ֥ח אִישׁ֙ אִשָּׁ֣ה חֲדָשָׁ֔ה לֹ֤א יֵצֵא֙ בַּצָּבָ֔א וְלֹא־יַעֲבֹ֥ר עָלָ֖יו לְכָל־דָּבָ֑ר נָקִ֞י יִהְיֶ֤ה לְבֵיתוֹ֙ שָׁנָ֣ה אֶחָ֔ת וְשִׂמַּ֖ח אֶת־אִשְׁתּ֥וֹ אֲשֶׁר־לָקָֽח׃ס

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yachabo֥l recha֖yim vara֑keb kּiy-ne֖peshsh h֥u chobeֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take a pair of millstones, not even the upper one, as security for a debt, because that would be taking a person's livelihood as security.

לֹא־יַחֲבֹ֥ל רֵחַ֖יִם וָרָ֑כֶב כִּי־נֶ֖פֶשׁ ה֥וּא חֹבֵֽל׃ס

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiy-yimּatze֣ 'i֗yshsh gּone֨b ne֤peshsh me'echayv֙ mibּene֣y yishsera'e֔l vehite'amּer-bּ֖o umekar֑o umet֙ hagּanּa֣b hah֔u ubiֽ'aretּa֥ hara֖ miqּirebּeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If someone is caught kidnapping a fellow Israelite and treating or selling them as a slave, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from among you.

כִּי־יִמָּצֵ֣א אִ֗ישׁ גֹּנֵ֨ב נֶ֤פֶשׁ מֵאֶחָיו֙ מִבְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהִתְעַמֶּר־בּ֖וֹ וּמְכָר֑וֹ וּמֵת֙ הַגַּנָּ֣ב הַה֔וּא וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִקִּרְבֶּֽךָ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): hishshּa֧mer bּeneֽga'-hatzּara֛'at lishshemo֥r me'o֖d vela'ashs֑ot kּekol֩ 'ashsher-yor֨u 'eteke֜m hakּohani֧ym haleviyּi֛m kּa'ashshe֥r tziuiyti֖m tּishshemer֥u la'ashsֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)In cases of defiling skin diseases, be very careful to do exactly as the Levitical priests instruct you. You must follow carefully what I have commanded them.

הִשָּׁ֧מֶר בְּנֶֽגַע־הַצָּרַ֛עַת לִשְׁמֹ֥ר מְאֹ֖ד וְלַעֲשׂ֑וֹת כְּכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁר־יוֹר֨וּ אֶתְכֶ֜ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים הַלְוִיִּ֛ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּיתִ֖ם תִּשְׁמְר֥וּ לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ס

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): zak֕or 'e֧t 'ashsher-'ashsa֛h yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka lemireya֑m bּadּe֖reke bּetze'teke֥m mimּitzeraֽyim׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam along the way after you came out of Egypt.

זָכ֕וֹר אֵ֧ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֛ה יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לְמִרְיָ֑ם בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ בְּצֵאתְכֶ֥ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-tashshּe֥h bereֽ'aka mashshּa֣'t me'֑umah lo'-tabo֥ 'el-bּeyt֖o la'abo֥t 'abotֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbour, do not go into their house to get what is offered as a pledge.

כִּֽי־תַשֶּׁ֥ה בְרֵֽעֲךָ מַשַּׁ֣את מְא֑וּמָה לֹא־תָבֹ֥א אֶל־בֵּית֖וֹ לַעֲבֹ֥ט עֲבֹטֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּach֖utz tּa'amo֑d veha'i֗yshsh 'ashshe֤r 'atּah֙ noshshe֣h b֔o yotzi֥y 'ele֛yka 'eֽt-ha'ab֖ot hachֽutzah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Stay outside and let the neighbour to whom you are making the loan bring the pledge out to you.

בַּח֖וּץ תַּעֲמֹ֑ד וְהָאִ֗ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ נֹשֶׁ֣ה ב֔וֹ יוֹצִ֥יא אֵלֶ֛יךָ אֶֽת־הַעֲב֖וֹט הַחֽוּצָה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-'i֥yshsh 'ani֖y h֑u lo֥ tishshekּa֖b bּa'abotֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the neighbour is poor, do not go to sleep with their pledge in your possession.

וְאִם־אִ֥ישׁ עָנִ֖י ה֑וּא לֹ֥א תִשְׁכַּ֖ב בַּעֲבֹטֽוֹ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): hashsheb֩ tּashshi֨yb l֤o 'eֽt-ha'abot֙ kּebo֣ hashshּe֔meshsh veshshaka֥b bּeshsalemat֖o ubeֽrake֑kּa uleka֙ tּiheye֣h tzedaqa֔h lipene֖y yehva֥h 'eloheֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Return their cloak by sunset so that your neighbour may sleep in it. Then they will thank you, and it will be regarded as a righteous act in the sight of the LORD your God.

הָשֵׁב֩ תָּשִׁ֨יב ל֤וֹ אֶֽת־הַעֲבוֹט֙ כְּבֹ֣א הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ וְשָׁכַ֥ב בְּשַׂלְמָת֖וֹ וּבֵֽרֲכֶ֑ךָּ וּלְךָ֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה צְדָקָ֔ה לִפְנֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-ta'ashsho֥q shsaki֖yr 'ani֣y ve'ebey֑on me'ache֕yka '֧o migּereka֛ 'ashshe֥r bּe'aretzeka֖ bּishshe'areֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.

לֹא־תַעֲשֹׁ֥ק שָׂכִ֖יר עָנִ֣י וְאֶבְי֑וֹן מֵאַחֶ֕יךָ א֧וֹ מִגֵּרְךָ֛ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּאַרְצְךָ֖ בִּשְׁעָרֶֽיךָ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּeyomo֩ titּe֨n shsekar֜o veֽlo'-tab֧o 'ala֣yv hashshּe֗meshsh kּi֤y 'aniy֙ h֔u ve'ela֕yv h֥u noshse֖ 'et-napeshsh֑o veloֽ'-yiqera֤ 'ale֨yka֙ 'el-yehva֔h vehaya֥h beka֖ cheֽte'׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty of sin.

בְּיוֹמוֹ֩ תִתֵּ֨ן שְׂכָר֜וֹ וְֽלֹא־תָב֧וֹא עָלָ֣יו הַשֶּׁ֗מֶשׁ כִּ֤י עָנִי֙ ה֔וּא וְאֵלָ֕יו ה֥וּא נֹשֵׂ֖א אֶת־נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וְלֹֽא־יִקְרָ֤א עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְהָיָ֥ה בְךָ֖ חֵֽטְא׃ס

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yumet֤u 'abot֙ 'al-bּani֔ym ubani֖ym lo'-yumet֣u 'al-'ab֑ot 'i֥ysh bּechete'֖o yumaֽtu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Parents are not to be put to death for their children, nor children put to death for their parents; each will die for their own sin.

לֹֽא־יוּמְת֤וּ אָבוֹת֙ עַל־בָּנִ֔ים וּבָנִ֖ים לֹא־יוּמְת֣וּ עַל־אָב֑וֹת אִ֥יש בְּחֶטְא֖וֹ יוּמָֽתוּ׃ס

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo֣ tatּe֔h mishshepּa֖t gּe֣r yat֑om velo֣ tachabo֔l bּe֖ged 'alemanaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not deprive the foreigner or the fatherless of justice, or take the cloak of the widow as a pledge.

לֹ֣א תַטֶּ֔ה מִשְׁפַּ֖ט גֵּ֣ר יָת֑וֹם וְלֹ֣א תַחֲבֹ֔ל בֶּ֖גֶד אַלְמָנָֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vezakaretּa֗ kּi֣y 'e֤bed hayi֨yta֙ bּemitzera֔yim vaֽyּipedּeka֛ yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka mishshּa֑m 'al-kּe֞n 'anoki֤y metzaueka֙ la'ashs֔ot 'et-hadּaba֖r hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. That is why I command you to do this.

וְזָכַרְתָּ֗ כִּ֣י עֶ֤בֶד הָיִ֨יתָ֙ בְּמִצְרַ֔יִם וַֽיִּפְדְּךָ֛ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ מִשָּׁ֑ם עַל־כֵּ֞ן אָנֹכִ֤י מְצַוְּךָ֙ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y tiqetzor֩ qetziֽyreka֨ beshsade֜ka veshshֽakachetּa֧ 'o֣mer bּashsּade֗h lo֤ tashshub֙ leqachetּ֔o lagּe֛r layּat֥om vela'alemana֖h yiheye֑h lema֤'an yebarekeka֙ yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka bּeko֖l ma'ashse֥h yadeֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.

כִּ֣י תִקְצֹר֩ קְצִֽירְךָ֨ בְשָׂדֶ֜ךָ וְשָֽׁכַחְתָּ֧ עֹ֣מֶר בַּשָּׂדֶ֗ה לֹ֤א תָשׁוּב֙ לְקַחְתּ֔וֹ לַגֵּ֛ר לַיָּת֥וֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָ֖ה יִהְיֶ֑ה לְמַ֤עַן יְבָרֶכְךָ֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ בְּכֹ֖ל מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יָדֶֽיךָ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y tachebּot֙ zeֽyteka֔ lo֥ tepa'e֖r 'achare֑yka lagּe֛r layּat֥om vela'alemana֖h yiheyeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When you beat the olives from your trees, do not go over the branches a second time. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.

כִּ֤י תַחְבֹּט֙ זֵֽיתְךָ֔ לֹ֥א תְפָאֵ֖ר אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ לַגֵּ֛ר לַיָּת֥וֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָ֖ה יִהְיֶֽה׃ס

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y tibetzor֙ kּaremeka֔ lo֥ te'ole֖l 'achare֑yka lagּe֛r layּat֥om vela'alemana֖h yiheyeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow.

כִּ֤י תִבְצֹר֙ כַּרְמְךָ֔ לֹ֥א תְעוֹלֵ֖ל אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ לַגֵּ֛ר לַיָּת֥וֹם וְלָאַלְמָנָ֖ה יִהְיֶֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): veza֣karetּa֔ kּiy-'e֥bed hayi֖yta bּe'e֣retz mitzera֑yim 'al-kּe֞n 'anoki֤y metzaueka֙ la'ashs֔ot 'et-hadּaba֖r hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this.

וְזָ֣כַרְתָּ֔ כִּי־עֶ֥בֶד הָיִ֖יתָ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם עַל־כֵּ֞ן אָנֹכִ֤י מְצַוְּךָ֙ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה׃ס
