Deuteronomy

Chapter 25
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yiheye֥h riyb֙ bּe֣yn 'anashshi֔ym venigּeshsh֥u 'el-hamּishshepּa֖t ushshepat֑um vehitzedּi֨yqu֙ 'et-hatzּadּi֔yq vehireshshi֖y'u 'et-harashshaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When people have a dispute, they are to take it to court and the judges will decide the case, acquitting the innocent and condemning the guilty.

כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֥ה רִיב֙ בֵּ֣ין אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְנִגְּשׁ֥וּ אֶל־הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט וּשְׁפָט֑וּם וְהִצְדִּ֨יקוּ֙ אֶת־הַצַּדִּ֔יק וְהִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ אֶת־הָרָשָֽׁע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֛h 'im-bּi֥n hakּ֖ot harashsha֑ vehipּiyl֤o hashshּopet֙ vehikּa֣hu lepana֔yv kּede֥y rishshe'at֖o bּemisepּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the guilty person deserves to be beaten, the judge shall make them lie down and have them flogged in his presence with the number of lashes the crime deserves,

וְהָיָ֛ה אִם־בִּ֥ן הַכּ֖וֹת הָרָשָׁ֑ע וְהִפִּיל֤וֹ הַשֹּׁפֵט֙ וְהִכָּ֣הוּ לְפָנָ֔יו כְּדֵ֥י רִשְׁעָת֖וֹ בְּמִסְפָּֽר׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): arebּa'i֥ym yakּe֖nּu lo֣ yosi֑yp pּen-yosi֨yp lehakּot֤o 'al-'e֨lּeh֙ makּa֣h rabּa֔h veniqela֥h 'achi֖yka le'eyneֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)but the judge must not impose more than forty lashes. If the guilty party is flogged more than that, your fellow Israelite will be degraded in your eyes.

אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יַכֶּ֖נּוּ לֹ֣א יֹסִ֑יף פֶּן־יֹסִ֨יף לְהַכֹּת֤וֹ עַל־אֵ֨לֶּה֙ מַכָּ֣ה רַבָּ֔ה וְנִקְלָ֥ה אָחִ֖יךָ לְעֵינֶֽיךָ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tacheso֥m shsh֖or bּediyshshֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.

לֹא־תַחְסֹ֥ם שׁ֖וֹר בְּדִישֽׁוֹ׃ס

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yeshsheb֨u 'achi֜ym yachedּa֗v ume֨t 'acha֤d mehem֙ ube֣n 'eֽyn-l֔o loֽ'-tiheye֧h 'eֽshshet-hamּe֛t hach֖utzah le'i֣yshsh za֑r yebamahּ֙ yabo֣ 'ale֔yha uleqacha֥hּ l֛o le'ishshּa֖h veyibּemaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If brothers are living together and one of them dies without a son, his widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband's brother shall take her and marry her and fulfil the duty of a brother-in-law to her.

כִּֽי־יֵשְׁב֨וּ אַחִ֜ים יַחְדָּ֗ו וּמֵ֨ת אַחַ֤ד מֵהֶם֙ וּבֵ֣ן אֵֽין־ל֔וֹ לֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֧ה אֵֽשֶׁת־הַמֵּ֛ת הַח֖וּצָה לְאִ֣ישׁ זָ֑ר יְבָמָהּ֙ יָבֹ֣א עָלֶ֔יהָ וּלְקָחָ֥הּ ל֛וֹ לְאִשָּׁ֖ה וְיִבְּמָֽהּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h habּekor֙ 'ashshe֣r tּele֔d yaq֕um 'al-shshe֥m 'achi֖yv hamּe֑t veloֽ'-yimּache֥h shshem֖o miyּishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The first son she bears shall carry on the name of the dead brother so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.

וְהָיָ֗ה הַבְּכוֹר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּלֵ֔ד יָק֕וּם עַל־שֵׁ֥ם אָחִ֖יו הַמֵּ֑ת וְלֹֽא־יִמָּחֶ֥ה שְׁמ֖וֹ מִיִּשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-lo֤ yachepּotz֙ ha'i֔yshsh laqa֖chat 'et-yebimetּ֑o ve'aletah֩ yebimetּ֨o hashshּa֜'erah 'el-hazּeqeni֗ym ve'aֽmerah֙ me'e֨yn yebami֜y lehaqi֨ym le'achi֥yv shshem֙ bּeyishsera'e֔l lo֥ 'aba֖h yabּemiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)However, if a man does not want to marry his brother's wife, she shall go to the elders at the town gate and say, "My husband's brother refuses to carry on his brother's name in Israel. He will not fulfil the duty of a brother-in-law to me."

וְאִם־לֹ֤א יַחְפֹּץ֙ הָאִ֔ישׁ לָקַ֖חַת אֶת־יְבִמְתּ֑וֹ וְעָלְתָה֩ יְבִמְתּ֨וֹ הַשַּׁ֜עְרָה אֶל־הַזְּקֵנִ֗ים וְאָֽמְרָה֙ מֵאֵ֨ין יְבָמִ֜י לְהָקִ֨ים לְאָחִ֥יו שֵׁם֙ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה יַבְּמִֽי׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): veqaֽre'u-l֥o ziqeney-'iyr֖o vedibּer֣u 'ela֑yv ve'ama֣d ve'ama֔r lo֥ chapa֖tzetּiy leqachetּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the elders of his town shall summon him and talk to him. If he persists in saying, "I do not want to marry her,"

וְקָֽרְאוּ־ל֥וֹ זִקְנֵי־עִיר֖וֹ וְדִבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֑יו וְעָמַ֣ד וְאָמַ֔ר לֹ֥א חָפַ֖צְתִּי לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): venigּeshsha֨h yebimetּ֣o 'elayv֮ le'eyne֣y hazּeqeniym֒ vechaletza֤h na'alo֙ me'a֣l ragel֔o veyareqa֖h bּepana֑yv ve'aֽnetah֙ ve'a֣mera֔h kּa֚kah ye'ashse֣h la'i֔yshsh 'ashshe֥r lo'-yibene֖h 'et-bּe֥yt 'achiֽyv
Edified Edition (EDE)his brother's widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, take off one of his sandals, spit in his face and say, "This is what is done to the man who will not build up his brother's family line."

וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ אֵלָיו֮ לְעֵינֵ֣י הַזְּקֵנִים֒ וְחָלְצָ֤ה נַעֲלוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְל֔וֹ וְיָרְקָ֖ה בְּפָנָ֑יו וְעָֽנְתָה֙ וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה כָּ֚כָה יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יִבְנֶ֖ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית אָחִֽיו

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veniqera֥ shshem֖o bּeyishsera'e֑l bּe֖yt chal֥utz hanּaֽ'al׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)That man's line shall be known in Israel as The Family of the Unsandaled.

וְנִקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בֵּ֖ית חֲל֥וּץ הַנָּֽעַל׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yinּatz֨u 'anashshi֤ym yachedּav֙ 'i֣yshsh ve'achi֔yv veqֽarebah֙ 'e֣shshet haֽ'echa֔d lehatzּi֥yl 'et-'iyshsha֖hּ miyּa֣d makּe֑hu veshshalecha֣h yada֔hּ vehechezi֖yqah bּimebushshaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his attacker, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts,

כִּֽי־יִנָּצ֨וּ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים יַחְדָּו֙ אִ֣ישׁ וְאָחִ֔יו וְקָֽרְבָה֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת הָֽאֶחָ֔ד לְהַצִּ֥יל אֶת־אִישָׁ֖הּ מִיַּ֣ד מַכֵּ֑הוּ וְשָׁלְחָ֣ה יָדָ֔הּ וְהֶחֱזִ֖יקָה בִּמְבֻשָֽׁיו׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): veqatzּota֖h 'et-kּapּa֑hּ lo֥ tach֖os 'eyneֽka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

וְקַצֹּתָ֖ה אֶת־כַּפָּ֑הּ לֹ֥א תָח֖וֹס עֵינֶֽךָ׃ס

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yiheye֥h leka֛ bּekiֽyseka֖ 'e֣ben va'a֑ben gּedola֖h uqetanּaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have two differing weights in your bag, one heavy, one light.

לֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֛ בְּכִֽיסְךָ֖ אֶ֣בֶן וָאָ֑בֶן גְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְטַנָּֽה׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-yiheye֥h leka֛ bּebeyteka֖ 'eypa֣h ve'eypa֑h gּedola֖h uqetanּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not have two differing measures in your house, one large, one small.

לֹא־יִהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֛ בְּבֵיתְךָ֖ אֵיפָ֣ה וְאֵיפָ֑ה גְּדוֹלָ֖ה וּקְטַנָּֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣ben shshelema֤h vatze֨deq֙ yiֽheyeh-lּa֔ke 'eypa֧h shshelema֛h vatze֖deq yiֽheyeh-lּa֑ke lema֨'an֙ ya'ari֣yku yame֔yka 'a֚l hֽa'adama֔h 'ashsher-yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka note֥n laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

אֶ֣בֶן שְׁלֵמָ֤ה וָצֶ֨דֶק֙ יִֽהְיֶה־לָּ֔ךְ אֵיפָ֧ה שְׁלֵמָ֛ה וָצֶ֖דֶק יִֽהְיֶה־לָּ֑ךְ לְמַ֨עַן֙ יַאֲרִ֣יכוּ יָמֶ֔יךָ עַ֚ל הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לָֽךְ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֧y to'aba֛t yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka kּal-'o֣shseh 'e֑lּeh kּo֖l 'o֥shseh 'aֽvel׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)For the LORD your God detests anyone who does these things, anyone who deals dishonestly.

כִּ֧י תוֹעֲבַ֛ת יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ כָּל־עֹ֣שֵׂה אֵ֑לֶּה כֹּ֖ל עֹ֥שֵׂה עָֽוֶל׃פ

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): zak֕or 'e֛t 'ashsher-'ashsa֥h leka֖ 'amale֑q bּadּe֖reke bּetze'teke֥m mimּitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember what the Amalekites did to you along the way when you came out of Egypt.

זָכ֕וֹר אֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֥ה לְךָ֖ עֲמָלֵ֑ק בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ בְּצֵאתְכֶ֥ם מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshe֨r qaֽreka֜ bּadּe֗reke vayezanּe֤b bּeka֙ kּal-hanּecheshshali֣ym 'aֽchare֔yka ve'atּa֖h 'aye֣p veyage֑'a velo֥ yare֖ 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you were weary and worn out, they met you on your journey and attacked all who were lagging behind; they had no fear of God.

אֲשֶׁ֨ר קָֽרְךָ֜ בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ וַיְזַנֵּ֤ב בְּךָ֙ כָּל־הַנֶּחֱשָׁלִ֣ים אַֽחַרֶ֔יךָ וְאַתָּ֖ה עָיֵ֣ף וְיָגֵ֑עַ וְלֹ֥א יָרֵ֖א אֱלֹהִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֡h bּehani֣ycha yehva֣h 'elohe֣yka ׀ le֠ka mikּal-'o֨yebe֜yka misּabi֗yb bּa'a֨retz֙ 'ashshe֣r yehvaֽh-'e֠loheyka note֨n leka֤ nachalah֙ lerishshetּa֔hּ tּimecheh֙ 'et-ze֣ker 'amale֔q mitּa֖chat hashshּama֑yim lo֖ tּishshekּaֽch׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)When the LORD your God gives you rest from all the enemies around you in the land he is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you shall blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven. Do not forget!

וְהָיָ֡ה בְּהָנִ֣יחַ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֣יךָ ׀ לְ֠ךָ מִכָּל־אֹ֨יְבֶ֜יךָ מִסָּבִ֗יב בָּאָ֨רֶץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְהוָֽה־אֱ֠לֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵ֨ן לְךָ֤ נַחֲלָה֙ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ תִּמְחֶה֙ אֶת־זֵ֣כֶר עֲמָלֵ֔ק מִתַּ֖חַת הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם לֹ֖א תִּשְׁכָּֽח׃פ
