Chapter 8
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-hamּitzeva֗h 'ashshe֨r 'anoki֧y metzaueka֛ hayּ֖om tּishshemer֣un la'ashs֑ot lema֨'an tּiֽchey֜un urebiyte֗m uba'tem֙ viֽyrishshetּe֣m 'et-ha'a֔retz 'ashsher-nishshebּa֥ yehva֖h la'aboteykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today, so that you may live and increase and may enter and possess the land the LORD promised on oath to your ancestors.

כָּל־הַמִּצְוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֧י מְצַוְּךָ֛ הַיּ֖וֹם תִּשְׁמְר֣וּן לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת לְמַ֨עַן תִּֽחְי֜וּן וּרְבִיתֶ֗ם וּבָאתֶם֙ וִֽירִשְׁתֶּ֣ם אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vezakaretּa֣ 'et-kּal-hadּe֗reke 'ashshe֨r holiֽykaka֜ yehva֧h 'elohe֛yka ze֛h 'arebּa'i֥ym shshana֖h bּamּidebּa֑r lema֨'an 'anּoֽteka֜ lenasּoֽteka֗ lada֜'at 'et-'ashshe֧r bּiֽlebabeka֛ hatishshemo֥r mtzvtv mitzevota֖yv 'im-loֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands.

וְזָכַרְתָּ֣ אֶת־כָּל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֹלִֽיכֲךָ֜ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ זֶ֛ה אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר לְמַ֨עַן עַנֹּֽתְךָ֜ לְנַסֹּֽתְךָ֗ לָדַ֜עַת אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֧ר בִּֽלְבָבְךָ֛ הֲתִשְׁמֹ֥ר מצותו מִצְוֺתָ֖יו אִם־לֹֽא׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽye'anּeka֮ vayּare'ibeka֒ vayּaֽ'akiֽleka֤ 'et hamּan֙ 'ashshe֣r lo'-yada֔'etּa velo֥ yade'֖un 'abote֑yka lema֣'an hodiֽ'aka֗ kּi֠y lo֣ 'al-halּe֤chem lebadּo֙ yicheye֣h haֽ'ada֔m kּi֛y 'al-kּal-motza֥ piֽy-yehva֖h yicheye֥h ha'adaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which neither you nor your ancestors had known, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.

וַֽיְעַנְּךָ֮ וַיַּרְעִבֶךָ֒ וַיַּֽאֲכִֽלְךָ֤ אֶת הַמָּן֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־יָדַ֔עְתָּ וְלֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּן אֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ לְמַ֣עַן הוֹדִֽעֲךָ֗ כִּ֠י לֹ֣א עַל־הַלֶּ֤חֶם לְבַדּוֹ֙ יִחְיֶ֣ה הָֽאָדָ֔ם כִּ֛י עַל־כָּל־מוֹצָ֥א פִֽי־יְהוָ֖ה יִחְיֶ֥ה הָאָדָֽם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): shsimela֨teka֜ lo֤ baֽletah֙ meֽ'ale֔yka verageleka֖ lo֣ batze֑qah ze֖h 'arebּa'i֥ym shshanaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Your clothes did not wear out and your feet did not swell during these forty years.

שִׂמְלָ֨תְךָ֜ לֹ֤א בָֽלְתָה֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ וְרַגְלְךָ֖ לֹ֣א בָצֵ֑קָה זֶ֖ה אַרְבָּעִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyada'etּa֖ 'im-lebabe֑ka kּi֗y kּa'ashshe֨r yeyasּe֥r 'iyshsh֙ 'et-bּen֔o yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka meyasּereֽkּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Know then in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.

וְיָדַעְתָּ֖ עִם־לְבָבֶ֑ךָ כִּ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר יְיַסֵּ֥ר אִישׁ֙ אֶת־בְּנ֔וֹ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ מְיַסְּרֶֽךָּ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha֣maretּa֔ 'et-mitzevo֖t yehva֣h 'elohe֑yka lale֥ket bּideraka֖yv uleyire'a֥h 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.

וְשָׁ֣מַרְתָּ֔ אֶת־מִצְוֺ֖ת יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לָלֶ֥כֶת בִּדְרָכָ֖יו וּלְיִרְאָ֥ה אֹתֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka mebiֽy'aka֖ 'el-'e֣retz toba֑h 'e֚retz na֣chaley ma֔yim 'ayanot֙ utehomo֔t yotze'i֥ym bּabּiqe'a֖h ubahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land with brooks, streams, and deep springs gushing out into the valleys and hills;

כִּ֚י יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ מְבִֽיאֲךָ֖ אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ טוֹבָ֑ה אֶ֚רֶץ נַ֣חֲלֵי מָ֔יִם עֲיָנֹת֙ וּתְהֹמֹ֔ת יֹצְאִ֥ים בַּבִּקְעָ֖ה וּבָהָֽר׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֤retz chitּah֙ ushse'ora֔h vege֥pen ute'ena֖h verimּ֑on 'eֽretz-ze֥yt shshe֖men udebaֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)a land with wheat and barley, vines and fig trees, pomegranates, olive oil and honey;

אֶ֤רֶץ חִטָּה֙ וּשְׂעֹרָ֔ה וְגֶ֥פֶן וּתְאֵנָ֖ה וְרִמּ֑וֹן אֶֽרֶץ־זֵ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶן וּדְבָֽשׁ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֗retz 'ashshe֨r lo֤ bemisekּenut֙ tּoֽ'kal-bּa֣hּ le֔chem loֽ'-techesa֥r kּo֖l bּa֑hּ 'e֚retz 'ashshe֣r 'abane֣yha bareze֔l umeharare֖yha tּachetzo֥b nechoֽshshet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)a land where bread will not be scarce and you will lack nothing; a land where the rocks are iron and you can dig copper out of the hills.

אֶ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹ֤א בְמִסְכֵּנֻת֙ תֹּֽאכַל־בָּ֣הּ לֶ֔חֶם לֹֽא־תֶחְסַ֥ר כֹּ֖ל בָּ֑הּ אֶ֚רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲבָנֶ֣יהָ בַרְזֶ֔ל וּמֵהֲרָרֶ֖יהָ תַּחְצֹ֥ב נְחֹֽשֶׁת׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'akaletּa֖ veshsaba֑'etּa ubeֽraketּa֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka 'al-ha'a֥retz hatּoba֖h 'ashshe֥r naֽtan-laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you.

וְאָכַלְתָּ֖ וְשָׂבָ֑עְתָּ וּבֵֽרַכְתָּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ עַל־הָאָ֥רֶץ הַטֹּבָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָֽתַן־לָֽךְ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): hishshּa֣mer leka֔ pּen-tּishshekּa֖ch 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֑yka lebiletּi֨y shshemo֤r mitzevotayv֙ umishshepּata֣yv vechuqּota֔yv 'ashshe֛r 'anoki֥y metzaueka֖ hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day.

הִשָּׁ֣מֶר לְךָ֔ פֶּן־תִּשְׁכַּ֖ח אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֑יךָ לְבִלְתִּ֨י שְׁמֹ֤ר מִצְוֺתָיו֙ וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו וְחֻקֹּתָ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֛ר אָנֹכִ֥י מְצַוְּךָ֖ הַיּֽוֹם׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): pּen-tּo'ka֖l veshsaba֑'etּa ubatּi֥ym tobi֛ym tּibene֖h veyashshaֽbetּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,

פֶּן־תֹּאכַ֖ל וְשָׂבָ֑עְתָּ וּבָתִּ֥ים טוֹבִ֛ים תִּבְנֶ֖ה וְיָשָֽׁבְתָּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeqaֽreka֤ vetzoֽ'neka֙ yirebּeyu֔n veke֥sep vezaha֖b yirebּeh-lּa֑ke veko֥l 'ashsher-leka֖ yirebּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied,

וּבְקָֽרְךָ֤ וְצֹֽאנְךָ֙ יִרְבְּיֻ֔ן וְכֶ֥סֶף וְזָהָ֖ב יִרְבֶּה־לָּ֑ךְ וְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־לְךָ֖ יִרְבֶּֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vera֖m lebabe֑ka veshshaֽkachetּa֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka hamּotziy'aka֛ me'e֥retz mitzera֖yim mibּe֥yt 'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

וְרָ֖ם לְבָבֶ֑ךָ וְשָֽׁכַחְתָּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ הַמּוֹצִיאֲךָ֛ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): hamּoli֨ykaka֜ bּamּidebּa֣r ׀ hagּado֣l vehanּora֗ nacha֤shsh ׀ shsarap֙ ve'aqera֔b vetzimּa'֖on 'ashshe֣r 'eֽyn-ma֑yim hamּotzi֤y leka֙ ma֔yim mitzּ֖ur hֽachalּamiֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.

הַמּוֹלִ֨יכֲךָ֜ בַּמִּדְבָּ֣ר ׀ הַגָּדֹ֣ל וְהַנּוֹרָ֗א נָחָ֤שׁ ׀ שָׂרָף֙ וְעַקְרָ֔ב וְצִמָּא֖וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֵֽין־מָ֑יִם הַמּוֹצִ֤יא לְךָ֙ מַ֔יִם מִצּ֖וּר הַֽחַלָּמִֽישׁ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): hamּֽa'aki֨leka֥ man֙ bּamּidebּa֔r 'ashshe֥r lo'-yade'֖un 'abote֑yka lema֣'an 'anּoֽteka֗ ulema֨'an֙ nasּote֔ka leheytiֽbeka֖ bּe'achariyteֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you.

הַמַּֽאֲכִ֨לְךָ֥ מָן֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יָדְע֖וּן אֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ לְמַ֣עַן עַנֹּֽתְךָ֗ וּלְמַ֨עַן֙ נַסֹּתֶ֔ךָ לְהֵיטִֽבְךָ֖ בְּאַחֲרִיתֶֽךָ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'amaretּa֖ bּilebabe֑ka kּochiy֙ ve'o֣tzem yadi֔y 'a֥shsah li֖y 'et-hacha֥yil hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me."

וְאָמַרְתָּ֖ בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ כֹּחִי֙ וְעֹ֣צֶם יָדִ֔י עָ֥שָׂה לִ֖י אֶת־הַחַ֥יִל הַזֶּֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vezaֽkaretּa֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka kּi֣y h֗u hanּote֥n leka֛ kּo֖cha la'ashs֣ot cha֑yil lema֨'an haqi֧ym 'et-bּeriyt֛o 'ashsher-nishshebּa֥ la'abote֖yka kּayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

וְזָֽכַרְתָּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ כִּ֣י ה֗וּא הַנֹּתֵ֥ן לְךָ֛ כֹּ֖חַ לַעֲשׂ֣וֹת חָ֑יִל לְמַ֨עַן הָקִ֧ים אֶת־בְּרִית֛וֹ אֲשֶׁר־נִשְׁבַּ֥ע לַאֲבֹתֶ֖יךָ כַּיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃פ

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h 'im-shshako֤cha tּishshekּach֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔yka vehaֽlaketּa֗ 'acharey֙ 'elohi֣ym 'acheri֔ym va'abadetּa֖m vehishshetּachavi֣yta lahe֑m ha'ido֤tiy bakem֙ hayּ֔om kּi֥y 'abo֖d tּo'bedֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If you ever forget the LORD your God and follow other gods and worship and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely be destroyed.

וְהָיָ֗ה אִם־שָׁכֹ֤חַ תִּשְׁכַּח֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֗ אַחֲרֵי֙ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַעֲבַדְתָּ֖ם וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִ֣יתָ לָהֶ֑ם הַעִדֹ֤תִי בָכֶם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם כִּ֥י אָבֹ֖ד תֹּאבֵדֽוּן׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּagּoyi֗m 'ashshe֤r yehvah֙ ma'abi֣yd mipּeneyke֔m kּe֖n to'bed֑un 'e֚qeb lo֣ tishsheme'֔un bּeq֖ol yehva֥h 'eloheykeֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Like the nations the LORD destroyed before you, so you will be destroyed for not obeying the LORD your God.

כַּגּוֹיִ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יְהוָה֙ מַאֲבִ֣יד מִפְּנֵיכֶ֔ם כֵּ֖ן תֹאבֵד֑וּן עֵ֚קֶב לֹ֣א תִשְׁמְע֔וּן בְּק֖וֹל יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃פ
