Chapter 8

Phonetic (Hebrew): mi֚y kּehe֣chaka֔m umi֥y yode֖'a pּe֣shsher dּaba֑r chakema֤t 'adam֙ tּa'i֣yr pּana֔yv ve'o֥z pּana֖yv yeshshunּeֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Who is as the wise man? and who knows the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom makes his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed.

מִ֚י כְּהֶ֣חָכָ֔ם וּמִ֥י יוֹדֵ֖עַ פֵּ֣שֶׁר דָּבָ֑ר חָכְמַ֤ת אָדָם֙ תָּאִ֣יר פָּנָ֔יו וְעֹ֥ז פָּנָ֖יו יְשֻׁנֶּֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): aniy֙ pּiy-me֣leke shshem֔or ve'a֕l dּibera֖t shshebu'a֥t 'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I counsel you to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

אֲנִי֙ פִּי־מֶ֣לֶךְ שְׁמ֔וֹר וְעַ֕ל דִּבְרַ֖ת שְׁבוּעַ֥ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּibּahe֤l mipּanayv֙ tּele֔ke 'aֽl-tּa'amo֖d bּedaba֣r ra֑ kּi֛y kּal-'ashshe֥r yachepּo֖tz ya'ashseֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he does whatever pleases him.

אַל־תִּבָּהֵ֤ל מִפָּנָיו֙ תֵּלֵ֔ךְ אַֽל־תַּעֲמֹ֖ד בְּדָבָ֣ר רָ֑ע כִּ֛י כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַחְפֹּ֖ץ יַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּa'ashshe֥r dּebar-me֖leke shshilet֑on umi֥y yoֽ'mar-l֖o maֽh-tּa'ashseֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say to him, "What do you?"

בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דְּבַר־מֶ֖לֶךְ שִׁלְט֑וֹן וּמִ֥י יֹֽאמַר־ל֖וֹ מַֽה־תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshome֣r mitzeva֔h lo֥ yeda֖ dּaba֣r ra֑ ve'e֣t umishshepּa֔t yeda֖ le֥b chakaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever keeps the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerns both time and judgement.

שׁוֹמֵ֣ר מִצְוָ֔ה לֹ֥א יֵדַ֖ע דָּבָ֣ר רָ֑ע וְעֵ֣ת וּמִשְׁפָּ֔ט יֵדַ֖ע לֵ֥ב חָכָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y lekal-che֔petz ye֖shsh 'e֣t umishshepּa֑t kּiֽy-ra'a֥t ha'ada֖m rabּa֥h 'alaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because to every purpose there is time and judgement, therefore the misery of man is great upon him.

כִּ֣י לְכָל־חֵ֔פֶץ יֵ֖שׁ עֵ֣ת וּמִשְׁפָּ֑ט כִּֽי־רָעַ֥ת הָאָדָ֖ם רַבָּ֥ה עָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-'eyne֥nּu yode֖'a mah-shshּeyּiֽheye֑h kּi֚y kּa'ashshe֣r yiֽheye֔h mi֖y yagּi֥yd lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For he knows not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?

כִּֽי־אֵינֶ֥נּוּ יֹדֵ֖עַ מַה־שֶּׁיִּֽהְיֶ֑ה כִּ֚י כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִֽהְיֶ֔ה מִ֖י יַגִּ֥יד לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣yn 'ada֞m shshalּi֤yt bּar֨ucha֙ likel֣o 'et-har֔ucha ve'e֤yn shshileton֙ bּey֣om hamּa֔vet ve'e֥yn mishshela֖chat bּamּilechama֑h veloֽ'-yemalּe֥t re֖shsha 'et-bּe'alaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is no man that has power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither has he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.

אֵ֣ין אָדָ֞ם שַׁלִּ֤יט בָּר֨וּחַ֙ לִכְל֣וֹא אֶת־הָר֔וּחַ וְאֵ֤ין שִׁלְטוֹן֙ בְּי֣וֹם הַמָּ֔וֶת וְאֵ֥ין מִשְׁלַ֖חַת בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְלֹֽא־יְמַלֵּ֥ט רֶ֖שַׁע אֶת־בְּעָלָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): et-kּal-ze֤h ra'i֨ytiy֙ venat֣on 'et-libּi֔y lekaֽl-ma'ashse֔h 'ashshe֥r na'ashsa֖h tּa֣chat hashshּa֑meshsh 'e֗t 'ashshe֨r shshala֧t ha'ada֛m bּe'ada֖m lera֥ lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All this have I seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man rules over another to his own hurt.

אֶת־כָּל־זֶ֤ה רָאִ֨יתִי֙ וְנָת֣וֹן אֶת־לִבִּ֔י לְכָֽל־מַעֲשֶׂ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה תַּ֣חַת הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ עֵ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֨ר שָׁלַ֧ט הָאָדָ֛ם בְּאָדָ֖ם לְרַ֥ע לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubeke֡n ra'iytiy֩ reshsha'i֨ym qeburi֜ym vaba֗'u umimּeq֤om qadoshsh֙ yehalּe֔ku veyiֽshshetּakּech֥u ba'i֖yr 'ashshe֣r kּen-'ashs֑u gּam-ze֖h haֽbel׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity.

וּבְכֵ֡ן רָאִיתִי֩ רְשָׁעִ֨ים קְבֻרִ֜ים וָבָ֗אוּ וּמִמְּק֤וֹם קָדוֹשׁ֙ יְהַלֵּ֔כוּ וְיִֽשְׁתַּכְּח֥וּ בָעִ֖יר אֲשֶׁ֣ר כֵּן־עָשׂ֑וּ גַּם־זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashsher֙ 'eyn-na'ashsa֣h pitega֔m ma'ashse֥h hara'a֖h mehera֑h 'al-kּe֡n male֞ le֧b bּeֽney-ha'ada֛m bּahe֖m la'ashs֥ot raֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

אֲשֶׁר֙ אֵין־נַעֲשָׂ֣ה פִתְגָ֔ם מַעֲשֵׂ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ה מְהֵרָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֡ן מָלֵ֞א לֵ֧ב בְּֽנֵי־הָאָדָ֛ם בָּהֶ֖ם לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת רָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ashshe֣r chote֗ 'oshse֥h ra֛ me'a֖t uma'ari֣yke l֑o kּi֚y gּam-yode֣'a 'a֔niy 'ashshe֤r yiheyeh-tּob֙ leyire'e֣y ha'elohi֔ym 'ashshe֥r yiֽyre'֖u milּepanaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before Him:

אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֹטֶ֗א עֹשֶׂ֥ה רָ֛ע מְאַ֖ת וּמַאֲרִ֣יךְ ל֑וֹ כִּ֚י גַּם־יוֹדֵ֣עַ אָ֔נִי אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִהְיֶה־טּוֹב֙ לְיִרְאֵ֣י הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִֽירְא֖וּ מִלְּפָנָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vetob֙ loֽ'-yiheye֣h laֽrashsha֔ veloֽ'-ya'ari֥yke yami֖ym kּatzּe֑l 'ashshe֛r 'eyne֥nּu yare֖ milּipene֥y 'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he fears not before God.

וְטוֹב֙ לֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֣ה לָֽרָשָׁ֔ע וְלֹֽא־יַאֲרִ֥יךְ יָמִ֖ים כַּצֵּ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֛ר אֵינֶ֥נּוּ יָרֵ֖א מִלִּפְנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yeshsh-hebel֮ 'ashshe֣r na'ashsa֣h 'al-ha'aretz֒ 'ashshe֣r ׀ ye֣shsh tzadּiyqi֗ym 'ashshe֨r magּi֤y'a 'alehem֙ kּema'ashse֣h hareshsha'i֔ym veye֣shsh reshsha'i֔ym shshemּagּi֥y'a 'alehe֖m kּema'ashse֣h hatzּadּiyqi֑ym 'ama֕retּiy shshegּam-ze֖h haֽbel׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

יֶשׁ־הֶבֶל֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נַעֲשָׂ֣ה עַל־הָאָרֶץ֒ אֲשֶׁ֣ר ׀ יֵ֣שׁ צַדִּיקִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר מַגִּ֤יעַ אֲלֵהֶם֙ כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה הָרְשָׁעִ֔ים וְיֵ֣שׁ רְשָׁעִ֔ים שֶׁמַּגִּ֥יעַ אֲלֵהֶ֖ם כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה הַצַּדִּיקִ֑ים אָמַ֕רְתִּי שֶׁגַּם־זֶ֖ה הָֽבֶל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshibּa֤chetּiֽy 'aniy֙ 'et-hashsּimecha֔h 'ashshe֨r 'eֽyn-t֤ob laֽ'adam֙ tּa֣chat hashshּe֔meshsh kּi֛y 'im-le'ek֥ol velishshetּ֖ot velishsem֑ocha veh֞u yileve֣nּu ba'amal֗o yeme֥y chayּa֛yv 'ashsher-naֽtan-l֥o ha'elohi֖ym tּa֥chat hashshּaֽmeshsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then I commended mirth, because a man has no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God gives him under the sun.

וְשִׁבַּ֤חְתִּֽי אֲנִי֙ אֶת־הַשִּׂמְחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אֵֽין־ט֤וֹב לָֽאָדָם֙ תַּ֣חַת הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כִּ֛י אִם־לֶאֱכ֥וֹל וְלִשְׁתּ֖וֹת וְלִשְׂמ֑וֹחַ וְה֞וּא יִלְוֶ֣נּוּ בַעֲמָל֗וֹ יְמֵ֥י חַיָּ֛יו אֲשֶׁר־נָֽתַן־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים תַּ֥חַת הַשָּֽׁמֶשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa'ashshe֨r nata֤tּiy 'et-libּiy֙ lada֣'at chakema֔h velire'ot֙ 'et-ha֣'ineya֔n 'ashshe֥r na'ashsa֖h 'al-ha'a֑retz kּi֣y ga֤m bּayּom֙ ubalּa֔yelah shshena֕h bּe'eyna֖yv 'eyne֥nּu ro'eֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When I applied my heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night sees sleep with his eyes:)

כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר נָתַ֤תִּי אֶת־לִבִּי֙ לָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֔ה וְלִרְאוֹת֙ אֶת־הָ֣עִנְיָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר נַעֲשָׂ֖ה עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ כִּ֣י גַ֤ם בַּיּוֹם֙ וּבַלַּ֔יְלָה שֵׁנָ֕ה בְּעֵינָ֖יו אֵינֶ֥נּוּ רֹאֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vera'iytiy֮ 'et-kּal-ma'ashse֣h ha'elohiym֒ kּiy֩ lo֨ yuka֜l ha'ada֗m limetzo'֙ 'et-haֽmּa'ashseh֙ 'ashshe֣r na'ashsa֣h taֽchat-hashshּe֔meshsh bּe֠shshel 'ashshe֨r ya'amo֧l ha'ada֛m lebaqּe֖shsh velo֣ yimetza֑ vega֨m 'im-yo'ma֤r heֽchakam֙ lada֔'at lo֥ yuka֖l limetzoֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yes further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

וְרָאִיתִי֮ אֶת־כָּל־מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה הָאֱלֹהִים֒ כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יוּכַ֜ל הָאָדָ֗ם לִמְצוֹא֙ אֶת־הַֽמַּעֲשֶׂה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נַעֲשָׂ֣ה תַֽחַת־הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ בְּ֠שֶׁל אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲמֹ֧ל הָאָדָ֛ם לְבַקֵּ֖שׁ וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָ֑א וְגַ֨ם אִם־יֹאמַ֤ר הֶֽחָכָם֙ לָדַ֔עַת לֹ֥א יוּכַ֖ל לִמְצֹֽא׃
