Chapter 13
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r yehva֖h 'el-moshshe֥h lּe'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD spoke to Moses and said,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): qadּeshsh-li֨y kal-bּek֜or pּe֤ter kּal-re֨chem֙ bּibene֣y yishsera'e֔l bּa'ada֖m ubabּehema֑h li֖y hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"[1] (Sanctify) every firstborn male to me. Every firstborn male among the Israelites, whether human or animal, belongs to me."

קַדֶּשׁ־לִ֨י כָל־בְּכ֜וֹר פֶּ֤טֶר כָּל־רֶ֨חֶם֙ בִּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בָּאָדָ֖ם וּבַבְּהֵמָ֑ה לִ֖י הֽוּא׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer moshshe֜h 'el-ha'a֗m zak֞or 'et-hayּ֤om hazּeh֙ 'ashshe֨r yetza'te֤m mimּitzera֨yim֙ mibּe֣yt 'abadi֔ym kּi֚y bּecho֣zeq ya֔d hotzi֧y yehova֛h 'eteke֖m mizּe֑h velo֥ ye'ake֖l chameֽtz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses said to the people, "Remember this day, the day you came out of Egypt, the land where you were slaves. the LORD brought you out from this place with a powerful hand. During this time, you must not eat any bread made with yeast."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶל־הָעָ֗ם זָכ֞וֹר אֶת־הַיּ֤וֹם הַזֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר יְצָאתֶ֤ם מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם֙ מִבֵּ֣ית עֲבָדִ֔ים כִּ֚י בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֔ד הוֹצִ֧יא יְהֹוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִזֶּ֑ה וְלֹ֥א יֵאָכֵ֖ל חָמֵֽץ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): hayּ֖om 'atּe֣m yotze'i֑ym bּecho֖deshsh ha'abiֽyb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You are leaving today, in the month of Abib."

הַיּ֖וֹם אַתֶּ֣ם יֹצְאִ֑ים בְּחֹ֖דֶשׁ הָאָבִֽיב׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֣h kiֽy-yebiֽy'aka֣ yehva֡h 'el-'e֣retz haֽ֠kּena'aniy vehachitּi֨y veha'emori֜y vehachiui֣y vehayebusi֗y 'ashshe֨r nishshebּa֤ la'abote֨yka֙ la֣tet la֔ke 'e֛retz zaba֥t chala֖b udeba֑shsh ve'abadetּa֛ 'et-ha'aboda֥h hazּo֖'t bּacho֥deshsh hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites, and Jebusites, the land He promised to your ancestors, a land flowing with milk and honey, you must perform this ceremony every year during this same month."

וְהָיָ֣ה כִֽי־יְבִֽיאֲךָ֣ יְהוָ֡ה אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽ֠כְּנַעֲנִי וְהַחִתִּ֨י וְהָאֱמֹרִ֜י וְהַחִוִּ֣י וְהַיְבוּסִ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִשְׁבַּ֤ע לַאֲבֹתֶ֨יךָ֙ לָ֣תֶת לָ֔ךְ אֶ֛רֶץ זָבַ֥ת חָלָ֖ב וּדְבָ֑שׁ וְעָבַדְתָּ֛ אֶת־הָעֲבֹדָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את בַּחֹ֥דֶשׁ הַזֶּֽה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshibe'a֥t yami֖ym tּo'ka֣l matzּo֑t ubayּom֙ hashshּebiy'i֔y cha֖g layhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"For seven days, you are to eat bread without yeast, and on the seventh day, you must hold a festival to the LORD."

שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים תֹּאכַ֣ל מַצֹּ֑ת וּבַיּוֹם֙ הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י חַ֖ג לַיהוָֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): matzּot֙ yeֽ'ake֔l 'e֖t shshibe'a֣t hayּami֑ym veloֽ'-yera'e֨h leka֜ chame֗tz veloֽ'-yera'e֥h leka֛ shse'o֖r bּekal-gּebuleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Eat only unleavened bread for those seven days. No yeast or bread made with yeast should be seen anywhere in your territory."

מַצּוֹת֙ יֵֽאָכֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת שִׁבְעַ֣ת הַיָּמִ֑ים וְלֹֽא־יֵרָאֶ֨ה לְךָ֜ חָמֵ֗ץ וְלֹֽא־יֵרָאֶ֥ה לְךָ֛ שְׂאֹ֖ר בְּכָל־גְּבֻלֶֽךָ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehigּadetּa֣ lebineka֔ bּayּ֥om hah֖u le'mo֑r bּa'ab֣ur ze֗h 'ashsa֤h yehvah֙ li֔y bּetze'ti֖y mimּitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"On that day, explain to your children, 'We do this because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'"

וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לְבִנְךָ֔ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לֵאמֹ֑ר בַּעֲב֣וּר זֶ֗ה עָשָׂ֤ה יְהוָה֙ לִ֔י בְּצֵאתִ֖י מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayah֩ leka֨ le'֜ot 'al-yadeka֗ ulezikּaron֙ bּe֣yn 'eyne֔yka lema֗'an tּiheye֛h tּora֥t yehva֖h bּepi֑yka kּi֚y bּeya֣d chazaqa֔h hotziֽ'aka֥ yehova֖h mimּitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"This practice will be like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead, so that the LORD's teachings will always be on your lips. Remember, the LORD brought you out of Egypt with a powerful hand."

וְהָיָה֩ לְךָ֨ לְא֜וֹת עַל־יָדְךָ֗ וּלְזִכָּרוֹן֙ בֵּ֣ין עֵינֶ֔יךָ לְמַ֗עַן תִּהְיֶ֛ה תּוֹרַ֥ת יְהוָ֖ה בְּפִ֑יךָ כִּ֚י בְּיָ֣ד חֲזָקָ֔ה הוֹצִֽאֲךָ֥ יְהֹוָ֖ה מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshamaretּa֛ 'et-hachuqּa֥h hazּo֖'t lemo'ada֑hּ miyּami֖ym yamiֽymah׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"You must follow these regulations at the proper time every single year."

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֛ אֶת־הַחֻקָּ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את לְמוֹעֲדָ֑הּ מִיָּמִ֖ים יָמִֽימָה׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֞h kּiֽy-yebiֽ'aka֤ yehvah֙ 'el-'e֣retz haֽkּena'ani֔y kּa'ashshe֛r nishshebּa֥ leka֖ velaֽ'abote֑yka unetana֖hּ laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"When the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, just as He promised you and your ancestors,"

וְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־יְבִֽאֲךָ֤ יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ הַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֔י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר נִשְׁבַּ֥ע לְךָ֖ וְלַֽאֲבֹתֶ֑יךָ וּנְתָנָ֖הּ לָֽךְ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'abaretּa֥ kal-pּeֽter-re֖chem laֽyhova֑h vekal-pּe֣ter ׀ shshe֣ger bּehema֗h 'ashshe֨r yiheye֥h leka֛ hazּekari֖ym layhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"you are to give every firstborn male animal to the LORD. Every firstborn male of your livestock belongs to Him."

וְהַעֲבַרְתָּ֥ כָל־פֶּֽטֶר־רֶ֖חֶם לַֽיהֹוָ֑ה וְכָל־פֶּ֣טֶר ׀ שֶׁ֣גֶר בְּהֵמָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִהְיֶ֥ה לְךָ֛ הַזְּכָרִ֖ים לַיהוָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-pּe֤ter chamor֙ tּipedּe֣h beshse֔h ve'im-lo֥ tipedּe֖h va'arapetּ֑o veko֨l bּek֥or 'ada֛m bּebane֖yka tּipedּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"You can buy back every firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not buy it back, you must break its neck. You must also buy back every firstborn son among your children."

וְכָל־פֶּ֤טֶר חֲמֹר֙ תִּפְדֶּ֣ה בְשֶׂ֔ה וְאִם־לֹ֥א תִפְדֶּ֖ה וַעֲרַפְתּ֑וֹ וְכֹ֨ל בְּכ֥וֹר אָדָ֛ם בְּבָנֶ֖יךָ תִּפְדֶּֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֞h kּiֽy-yishshe'aleka֥ bineka֛ macha֖r le'mo֣r mah-zּo֑'t ve'amaretּa֣ 'ela֔yv bּecho֣zeq ya֗d hotziy'a֧nu yehva֛h mimּitzera֖yim mibּe֥yt 'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"In the future, when your children ask you, 'Why do we do this?' you should tell them, 'the LORD brought us out of Egypt, the land where we were slaves, with a powerful hand.'"

וְהָיָ֞ה כִּֽי־יִשְׁאָלְךָ֥ בִנְךָ֛ מָחָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֣ר מַה־זֹּ֑את וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֔יו בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֗ד הוֹצִיאָ֧נוּ יְהוָ֛ה מִמִּצְרַ֖יִם מִבֵּ֥ית עֲבָדִֽים׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּiֽy-hiqeshsha֣h pare'oh֮ leshshalּechenu֒ vayּaharo֨g yehova֤h kּal-bּekor֙ bּe'e֣retz mitzera֔yim mibּeko֥r 'ada֖m ve'ad-bּek֣or bּehema֑h 'al-kּen֩ 'ani֨y zobe֜cha laֽyhva֗h kּal-pּe֤ter re֨chem֙ hazּekari֔ym vekal-bּek֥or bּana֖y 'epedּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)" 'When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the LORD killed every firstborn male in Egypt, both human and animal. That is why I sacrifice all firstborn male animals to the LORD and buy back my firstborn sons.'"

וַיְהִ֗י כִּֽי־הִקְשָׁ֣ה פַרְעֹה֮ לְשַׁלְּחֵנוּ֒ וַיַּהֲרֹ֨ג יְהֹוָ֤ה כָּל־בְּכוֹר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם מִבְּכֹ֥ר אָדָ֖ם וְעַד־בְּכ֣וֹר בְּהֵמָ֑ה עַל־כֵּן֩ אֲנִ֨י זֹבֵ֜חַ לַֽיהוָ֗ה כָּל־פֶּ֤טֶר רֶ֨חֶם֙ הַזְּכָרִ֔ים וְכָל־בְּכ֥וֹר בָּנַ֖י אֶפְדֶּֽה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֤h le'ot֙ 'al-ya֣deka֔h uletotapo֖t bּe֣yn 'eyne֑yka kּi֚y bּecho֣zeq ya֔d hotziy'a֥nu yehva֖h mimּitzeraֽyim׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"This will be like a sign on your hand and [2] (frontlets) between your eyes, reminding you that the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a powerful hand."

וְהָיָ֤ה לְאוֹת֙ עַל־יָ֣דְכָ֔ה וּלְטוֹטָפֹ֖ת בֵּ֣ין עֵינֶ֑יךָ כִּ֚י בְּחֹ֣זֶק יָ֔ד הוֹצִיאָ֥נוּ יְהוָ֖ה מִמִּצְרָֽיִם׃ס

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּeshshalּa֣ch pּare'oh֮ 'et-ha'am֒ velo'-nacha֣m 'elohi֗ym dּe֚reke 'e֣retz pּelishshetּi֔ym kּi֥y qar֖ob h֑u kּi֣y ׀ 'ama֣r 'elohi֗ym pּeֽn-yinּache֥m ha'a֛m bּire'ota֥m milechama֖h veshsha֥bu mitzeraֽyemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them through the land of the Philistines, even though that was the shortest route. God said, "If they face a war, they might change their minds and try to go back to Egypt."

וַיְהִ֗י בְּשַׁלַּ֣ח פַּרְעֹה֮ אֶת־הָעָם֒ וְלֹא־נָחָ֣ם אֱלֹהִ֗ים דֶּ֚רֶךְ אֶ֣רֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כִּ֥י קָר֖וֹב ה֑וּא כִּ֣י ׀ אָמַ֣ר אֱלֹהִ֗ים פֶּֽן־יִנָּחֵ֥ם הָעָ֛ם בִּרְאֹתָ֥ם מִלְחָמָ֖ה וְשָׁ֥בוּ מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּasּe֨b 'elohi֧ym ׀ 'et-ha'a֛m dּe֥reke hamּidebּa֖r yam-s֑up vachamushshi֛ym 'al֥u beney-yishsera'e֖l me'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So God led the people on a longer route through the desert toward the Red Sea. The Israelites left Egypt prepared for the journey.

וַיַּסֵּ֨ב אֱלֹהִ֧ים ׀ אֶת־הָעָ֛ם דֶּ֥רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּ֖ר יַם־ס֑וּף וַחֲמֻשִׁ֛ים עָל֥וּ בְנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֥ch moshshe֛h 'et-'atzem֥ot yose֖p 'imּ֑o kּiy֩ hashshebּe֨'a hishshebּi֜y'a 'et-bּene֤y yishsera'el֙ le'mo֔r pּaqo֨d yipeqo֤d 'elohiym֙ 'eteke֔m veha'aliyte֧m 'et-'atzemota֛y mizּe֖h 'itּekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. Joseph had made the Israelites promise to do this, saying, "God will surely come to your rescue, and when He does, you must carry my bones out of this place with you."

וַיִּקַּ֥ח מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־עַצְמ֥וֹת יוֹסֵ֖ף עִמּ֑וֹ כִּי֩ הַשְׁבֵּ֨עַ הִשְׁבִּ֜יעַ אֶת־בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר פָּקֹ֨ד יִפְקֹ֤ד אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶתְכֶ֔ם וְהַעֲלִיתֶ֧ם אֶת־עַצְמֹתַ֛י מִזֶּ֖ה אִתְּכֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּise'֖u misּukּo֑t vayּachan֣u be'eta֔m bּiqetze֖h hamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After leaving Succoth, they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.

וַיִּסְע֖וּ מִסֻּכֹּ֑ת וַיַּחֲנ֣וּ בְאֵתָ֔ם בִּקְצֵ֖ה הַמִּדְבָּֽר׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyhva֡h holeke֩ lipeneyhe֨m yoma֜m bּe'amּ֤ud 'anan֙ lanechota֣m hadּe֔reke vela֛yelah bּe'amּ֥ud 'e֖shsh leha'i֣yr lahe֑m lale֖ket yoma֥m valaֽyelah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)During the day, the LORD went ahead of them in a [3] (pillar of cloud) to show them the way. During the night, He went ahead of them in a [4] (pillar of fire) to give them light, so they could travel by day or by night.

וַֽיהוָ֡ה הֹלֵךְ֩ לִפְנֵיהֶ֨ם יוֹמָ֜ם בְּעַמּ֤וּד עָנָן֙ לַנְחֹתָ֣ם הַדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְלַ֛יְלָה בְּעַמּ֥וּד אֵ֖שׁ לְהָאִ֣יר לָהֶ֑ם לָלֶ֖כֶת יוֹמָ֥ם וָלָֽיְלָה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-yami֞yshsh 'amּ֤ud heֽ'anan֙ yoma֔m ve'amּ֥ud ha'e֖shsh la֑yelah lipene֖y ha'aֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The pillar of cloud stayed in front of them during the day, and the pillar of fire stayed in front of them at night. Both remained with the people always.

לֹֽא־יָמִ֞ישׁ עַמּ֤וּד הֶֽעָנָן֙ יוֹמָ֔ם וְעַמּ֥וּד הָאֵ֖שׁ לָ֑יְלָה לִפְנֵ֖י הָעָֽם׃פ
