Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּacho֨deshsh֙ hashshּeliyshshi֔y letze֥'t bּeney-yishsera'e֖l me'e֣retz mitzera֑yim bּayּ֣om hazּe֔h bּa֖'u midebּa֥r siynaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Exactly three months after the Israelites left Egypt, they arrived in the Desert of Sinai.

בַּחֹ֨דֶשׁ֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י לְצֵ֥את בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מֵאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה בָּ֖אוּ מִדְבַּ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּise'֣u merepiydi֗ym vayּabo֨'u֙ midebּa֣r siyna֔y vaֽyּachan֖u bּamּidebּa֑r vayּiֽchan-shsha֥m yishsera'e֖l ne֥ged hahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After setting out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert right in front of the mountain.

וַיִּסְע֣וּ מֵרְפִידִ֗ים וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ מִדְבַּ֣ר סִינַ֔י וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וַיִּֽחַן־שָׁ֥ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל נֶ֥גֶד הָהָֽר׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): umoshshe֥h 'ala֖h 'el-ha'elohi֑ym vayּiqera֨ 'ela֤yv yehvah֙ min-haha֣r le'mo֔r kּo֤h to'mar֙ lebe֣yt ya'aqo֔b vetagּe֖yd libene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain and said, "This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel:"

וּמֹשֶׁ֥ה עָלָ֖ה אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהוָה֙ מִן־הָהָ֣ר לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֤ה תֹאמַר֙ לְבֵ֣ית יַעֲקֹ֔ב וְתַגֵּ֖יד לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): atּe֣m re'iyte֔m 'ashshe֥r 'ashsi֖ytiy lemitzera֑yim va'eshsּa֤ 'etekem֙ 'al-kּanepe֣y neshshari֔ym va'abi֥ 'eteke֖m 'elaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.'"

אַתֶּ֣ם רְאִיתֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְמִצְרָ֑יִם וָאֶשָּׂ֤א אֶתְכֶם֙ עַל־כַּנְפֵ֣י נְשָׁרִ֔ים וָאָבִ֥א אֶתְכֶ֖ם אֵלָֽי׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h 'im-shsham֤o'a tּishsheme'u֙ bּeqoli֔y ushshemaretּe֖m 'et-bּeriyti֑y viheyi֨ytem li֤y segulּah֙ mikּal-ha֣'amּi֔ym kּiy-li֖y kּal-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my [1] (treasured possession). Although the whole earth is mine,'"

וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־שָׁמ֤וֹעַ תִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ בְּקֹלִ֔י וּשְׁמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֑י וִהְיִ֨יתֶם לִ֤י סְגֻלָּה֙ מִכָּל־הָ֣עַמִּ֔ים כִּי־לִ֖י כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּe֧m tּiheyu-li֛y mamele֥ket kּohani֖ym veg֣oy qad֑oshsh 'e֚lּeh hadּebari֔ym 'ashshe֥r tּedabּe֖r 'el-bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'you will be for me a [2] (kingdom of priests) and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites."

וְאַתֶּ֧ם תִּהְיוּ־לִ֛י מַמְלֶ֥כֶת כֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְג֣וֹי קָד֑וֹשׁ אֵ֚לֶּה הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּדַבֵּ֖ר אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣ moshshe֔h vayּiqera֖ leziqene֣y ha'a֑m vayּa֣shsem lipeneyhe֗m 'e֚t kּal-hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh 'ashshe֥r tziua֖hu yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the LORD had commanded him to speak.

וַיָּבֹ֣א מֹשֶׁ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֖א לְזִקְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיָּ֣שֶׂם לִפְנֵיהֶ֗ם אֵ֚ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'an֨u kal-ha'a֤m yachedּav֙ vayּo֣'mer֔u kּo֛l 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r yehva֖h na'ashse֑h vayּa֧shsheb moshshe֛h 'et-dּibere֥y ha'a֖m 'el-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The people all responded together, "We will do everything the LORD has said." So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD.

וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ כָל־הָעָ֤ם יַחְדָּו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה נַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וַיָּ֧שֶׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-moshshe֗h hinּe֨h 'anoki֜y bּa֣ 'eleyka֮ bּe'a֣b heֽ'anan֒ bּa'ab֞ur yishshema֤ ha'am֙ bּedabּeri֣y 'imּa֔ke vegam-bּeka֖ ya'ami֣ynu le'ola֑m vayּagּe֥d moshshe֛h 'et-dּibere֥y ha'a֖m 'el-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD said to Moses, "I am going to come to you in a thick cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you." Then Moses told the LORD what the people had said.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י בָּ֣א אֵלֶיךָ֮ בְּעַ֣ב הֶֽעָנָן֒ בַּעֲב֞וּר יִשְׁמַ֤ע הָעָם֙ בְּדַבְּרִ֣י עִמָּ֔ךְ וְגַם־בְּךָ֖ יַאֲמִ֣ינוּ לְעוֹלָ֑ם וַיַּגֵּ֥ד מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י הָעָ֖ם אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֤h 'el-moshsheh֙ le֣ke 'el-ha'a֔m veqidּashshetּa֥m hayּ֖om umacha֑r vekibּes֖u shsimelotaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to Moses, "Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁה֙ לֵ֣ךְ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ם הַיּ֖וֹם וּמָחָ֑ר וְכִבְּס֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehay֥u nekoni֖ym layּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֑y kּi֣y ׀ bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֗y yere֧d yehva֛h le'eyne֥y kal-ha'a֖m 'al-ha֥r siynaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"and be ready by the third day, because on that day the LORD will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people."

וְהָי֥וּ נְכֹנִ֖ים לַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י כִּ֣י ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י יֵרֵ֧ד יְהוָ֛ה לְעֵינֵ֥י כָל־הָעָ֖ם עַל־הַ֥ר סִינָֽי׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehigebּaletּa֤ 'et-ha'am֙ sabi֣yb le'mo֔r hishshּamer֥u lake֛m 'al֥ot bּaha֖r unego֣'a bּeqatze֑hu kּal-hanּoge֥'a bּaha֖r m֥ot yumaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Put limits around the mountain for the people and tell them, 'Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.'"

וְהִגְבַּלְתָּ֤ אֶת־הָעָם֙ סָבִ֣יב לֵאמֹ֔ר הִשָּׁמְר֥וּ לָכֶ֛ם עֲל֥וֹת בָּהָ֖ר וּנְגֹ֣עַ בְּקָצֵ֑הוּ כָּל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּהָ֖ר מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): lo'-tigּa֨ bּ֜o ya֗d kּiֽy-saq֤ol yisּaqel֙ 'o-yaro֣h yiyּare֔h 'im-bּehema֥h 'im-'i֖yshsh lo֣ yicheye֑h bּimeshshoke֙ hayּobe֔l he֖mּah ya'al֥u bahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.' Only when the [3] (ram's horn) sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain."

לֹא־תִגַּ֨ע בּ֜וֹ יָ֗ד כִּֽי־סָק֤וֹל יִסָּקֵל֙ אוֹ־יָרֹ֣ה יִיָּרֶ֔ה אִם־בְּהֵמָ֥ה אִם־אִ֖ישׁ לֹ֣א יִחְיֶ֑ה בִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הַיֹּבֵ֔ל הֵ֖מָּה יַעֲל֥וּ בָהָֽר׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧red moshshe֛h min-haha֖r 'el-ha'a֑m vayeqadּeshsh֙ 'et-ha'a֔m vaֽyekabּes֖u shsimelotaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Moses went down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.

וַיֵּ֧רֶד מֹשֶׁ֛ה מִן־הָהָ֖ר אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וַיְקַדֵּשׁ֙ אֶת־הָעָ֔ם וַֽיְכַבְּס֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָֽם׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-ha'a֔m hey֥u nekoni֖ym lishshelo֣shshet yami֑ym 'aֽl-tּigּeshsh֖u 'el-'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said to the people, "Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם הֱי֥וּ נְכֹנִ֖ים לִשְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים אַֽל־תִּגְּשׁ֖וּ אֶל־אִשָּֽׁה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֩ bayּ֨om hashshּeliyshshi֜y bּiֽheyo֣t habּo֗qer vayehiy֩ qolo֨t uberaqi֜ym ve'ana֤n kּabed֙ 'al-haha֔r veqo֥l shshopa֖r chaza֣q me'o֑d vayּechera֥d kּal-ha'a֖m 'ashshe֥r bּaֽmּachaneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled with fear.

וַיְהִי֩ בַיּ֨וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֜י בִּֽהְיֹ֣ת הַבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְהִי֩ קֹלֹ֨ת וּבְרָקִ֜ים וְעָנָ֤ן כָּבֵד֙ עַל־הָהָ֔ר וְקֹ֥ל שֹׁפָ֖ר חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כָּל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּotze֨ moshshe֧h 'et-ha'a֛m liqera֥'t haֽ'elohi֖ym min-haֽmּachane֑h vayּiֽteyatzּeb֖u bּetachetּi֥yt hahaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.

וַיּוֹצֵ֨א מֹשֶׁ֧ה אֶת־הָעָ֛ם לִקְרַ֥את הָֽאֱלֹהִ֖ים מִן־הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֑ה וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֖וּ בְּתַחְתִּ֥ית הָהָֽר׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֤r siynay֙ 'ashsha֣n kּulּ֔o mi֠pּeney 'ashshe֨r yara֥d 'ala֛yv yehva֖h bּa'e֑shsh vayּa֤'al 'ashshano֙ kּe'e֣shshen hakּibeshsha֔n vayּechera֥d kּal-haha֖r me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled violently.

וְהַ֤ר סִינַי֙ עָשַׁ֣ן כֻּלּ֔וֹ מִ֠פְּנֵי אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָרַ֥ד עָלָ֛יו יְהוָ֖ה בָּאֵ֑שׁ וַיַּ֤עַל עֲשָׁנוֹ֙ כְּעֶ֣שֶׁן הַכִּבְשָׁ֔ן וַיֶּחֱרַ֥ד כָּל־הָהָ֖ר מְאֹֽד׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ q֣ol hashshּopa֔r hole֖ke vechaze֣q me'o֑d moshshe֣h yedabּe֔r veha'elohi֖ym ya'ane֥nּu beqֽol׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.

וַיְהִי֙ ק֣וֹל הַשּׁוֹפָ֔ר הוֹלֵ֖ךְ וְחָזֵ֣ק מְאֹ֑ד מֹשֶׁ֣ה יְדַבֵּ֔ר וְהָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יַעֲנֶ֥נּוּ בְקֽוֹל׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧red yehva֛h 'al-ha֥r siyna֖y 'el-ro֣'shsh haha֑r vayּiqera֨ yehva֧h lemoshshe֛h 'el-ro֥'shsh haha֖r vayּa֥'al moshsheֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up.

וַיֵּ֧רֶד יְהוָ֛ה עַל־הַ֥ר סִינַ֖י אֶל־רֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר וַיִּקְרָ֨א יְהוָ֧ה לְמֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־רֹ֥אשׁ הָהָ֖ר וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶֽׁה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-moshshe֔h re֖d ha'e֣d bּa'a֑m pּen-yeheres֤u 'el-yehvah֙ lire'֔ot venapa֥l mimּe֖nּu raֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD said to him, "Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the LORD, resulting in many of them dying."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה רֵ֖ד הָעֵ֣ד בָּעָ֑ם פֶּן־יֶהֶרְס֤וּ אֶל־יְהוָה֙ לִרְא֔וֹת וְנָפַ֥ל מִמֶּ֖נּוּ רָֽב׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֧m hakּohani֛ym hanּigּashshi֥ym 'el-yehva֖h yiteqadּa֑shshu pּen-yipero֥tz bּahe֖m yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Even the priests, who approach the LORD, must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out against them."

וְגַ֧ם הַכֹּהֲנִ֛ים הַנִּגָּשִׁ֥ים אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה יִתְקַדָּ֑שׁוּ פֶּן־יִפְרֹ֥ץ בָּהֶ֖ם יְהוָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer moshsheh֙ 'el-yehva֔h lo'-yuka֣l ha'a֔m la'alo֖t 'el-ha֣r siyna֑y kּiֽy-'atּa֞h ha'edo֤tah bּa֨nu֙ le'mo֔r hagebּe֥l 'et-haha֖r veqidּashshetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moses said to the LORD, "The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because You Yourself warned us, 'Put limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.'"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה לֹא־יוּכַ֣ל הָעָ֔ם לַעֲלֹ֖ת אֶל־הַ֣ר סִינָ֑י כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה הַעֵדֹ֤תָה בָּ֨נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַגְבֵּ֥ל אֶת־הָהָ֖ר וְקִדַּשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֤yv yehvah֙ leke-re֔d ve'ali֥yta 'atּa֖h ve'aharo֣n 'imּa֑ke vehakּohani֣ym veha'a֗m 'al-yֽeheres֛u la'alo֥t 'el-yehva֖h pּen-yiperatz-bּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD replied, "Go down and then come back up with Aaron. But do not let the priests and the people force their way through to come up to the LORD, or He will break out against them."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֤יו יְהוָה֙ לֶךְ־רֵ֔ד וְעָלִ֥יתָ אַתָּ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן עִמָּ֑ךְ וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהָעָ֗ם אַל־יֶֽהֶרְס֛וּ לַעֲלֹ֥ת אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה פֶּן־יִפְרָץ־בָּֽם׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥red moshshe֖h 'el-ha'a֑m vayּo֖'mer 'aleheֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So Moses went down to the people and told them.

וַיֵּ֥רֶד מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵהֶֽם׃ס
