Chapter 22
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-bּamּachetּe֛ret yimּatze֥ hagּanּa֖b vehukּa֣h vame֑t 'e֥yn l֖o dּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Whoever steals an [1] (ox) or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it must pay back five head of cattle for the ox and four sheep for the sheep."

אִם־בַּמַּחְתֶּ֛רֶת יִמָּצֵ֥א הַגַּנָּ֖ב וְהֻכָּ֣ה וָמֵ֑ת אֵ֥ין ל֖וֹ דָּמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): im-zarecha֥h hashshּe֛meshsh 'ala֖yv dּami֣ym l֑o shshalּe֣m yeshshalּe֔m 'im-'e֣yn l֔o venimekּa֖r bּigenebatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed;"

אִם־זָרְחָ֥ה הַשֶּׁ֛מֶשׁ עָלָ֖יו דָּמִ֣ים ל֑וֹ שַׁלֵּ֣ם יְשַׁלֵּ֔ם אִם־אֵ֣ין ל֔וֹ וְנִמְכַּ֖ר בִּגְנֵבָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): iֽm-himּatze'֩ timּatze֨ beyad֜o hagּeneba֗h mishshּ֧or 'ad-cham֛or 'ad-shse֖h chayּi֑ym shshena֖yim yeshshalּeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed. Anyone who steals must certainly make restitution, but if they have nothing, they must be sold to pay for their theft."

אִֽם־הִמָּצֵא֩ תִמָּצֵ֨א בְיָד֜וֹ הַגְּנֵבָ֗ה מִשּׁ֧וֹר עַד־חֲמ֛וֹר עַד־שֶׂ֖ה חַיִּ֑ים שְׁנַ֖יִם יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y yabe'er-'iyshsh֙ shsade֣h 'o-ke֔rem veshshilּach֙ 'et-b'yrh bּe'iyr֔o ubi'e֖r bּishsede֣h 'ache֑r meyta֥b shsade֛hu umeyta֥b kּarem֖o yeshshalּeֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If the stolen animal is found alive in their possession, whether ox or donkey or sheep, they must pay back double."

כִּ֤י יַבְעֶר־אִישׁ֙ שָׂדֶ֣ה אוֹ־כֶ֔רֶם וְשִׁלַּח֙ אֶת־בעירה בְּעִיר֔וֹ וּבִעֵ֖ר בִּשְׂדֵ֣ה אַחֵ֑ר מֵיטַ֥ב שָׂדֵ֛הוּ וּמֵיטַ֥ב כַּרְמ֖וֹ יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-tetze֨ 'e֜shsh umatze'a֤h qotziym֙ vene'eka֣l gּadi֔yshsh '֥o haqּama֖h '֣o hashsּade֑h shshalּe֣m yeshshalּe֔m hamּabe'i֖r 'et-habּe'eraֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If anyone grazes their livestock in a field or vineyard and lets them stray and they graze in someone else's field, the offender must make restitution from the best of their own field or vineyard."

כִּֽי־תֵצֵ֨א אֵ֜שׁ וּמָצְאָ֤ה קֹצִים֙ וְנֶאֱכַ֣ל גָּדִ֔ישׁ א֥וֹ הַקָּמָ֖ה א֣וֹ הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה שַׁלֵּ֣ם יְשַׁלֵּ֔ם הַמַּבְעִ֖ר אֶת־הַבְּעֵרָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yitּen֩ 'i֨yshsh 'el-re'e֜hu kּe֤sep 'ֽo-keliym֙ lishshemo֔r vegunּa֖b mibּe֣yt ha'i֑yshsh 'im-yimּatze֥ hagּanּa֖b yeshshalּe֥m shshenaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If a fire breaks out and spreads into thornbushes so that it burns shocks of grain or standing grain or the whole field, the one who started the fire must make restitution."

כִּֽי־יִתֵּן֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֜הוּ כֶּ֤סֶף אֽוֹ־כֵלִים֙ לִשְׁמֹ֔ר וְגֻנַּ֖ב מִבֵּ֣ית הָאִ֑ישׁ אִם־יִמָּצֵ֥א הַגַּנָּ֖ב יְשַׁלֵּ֥ם שְׁנָֽיִם׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-lo֤ yimּatze'֙ hagּanּa֔b veniqera֥b bּaֽ'al-habּa֖yit 'el-haֽ'elohi֑ym 'im-lo֥ shshala֛ch yad֖o bּimele֥'ket re'eֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If anyone gives a neighbour silver or goods for safekeeping and they are stolen from the neighbour's house, the thief, if caught, must pay back double."

אִם־לֹ֤א יִמָּצֵא֙ הַגַּנָּ֔ב וְנִקְרַ֥ב בַּֽעַל־הַבַּ֖יִת אֶל־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים אִם־לֹ֥א שָׁלַ֛ח יָד֖וֹ בִּמְלֶ֥אכֶת רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): aֽl-kּal-dּebar-pּe֡shsha 'al-shsh֡or 'al-cha֠mor 'al-shse֨h 'al-shsalema֜h 'al-kּal-'abeda֗h 'ashshe֤r yo'mar֙ kּiy-h֣u ze֔h 'a֚d haֽ'elohi֔ym yabo֖ dּebar-shsheneyhe֑m 'ashshe֤r yareshshiy'un֙ 'elohi֔ym yeshshalּe֥m shshena֖yim lere'eֽhu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"But if the thief is not found, the owner of the house must appear before [2] (the judges), and they must determine whether the owner of the house has laid hands on the other person's property."

עַֽל־כָּל־דְּבַר־פֶּ֡שַׁע עַל־שׁ֡וֹר עַל־חֲ֠מוֹר עַל־שֶׂ֨ה עַל־שַׂלְמָ֜ה עַל־כָּל־אֲבֵדָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר יֹאמַר֙ כִּי־ה֣וּא זֶ֔ה עַ֚ד הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים יָבֹ֖א דְּבַר־שְׁנֵיהֶ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַרְשִׁיעֻן֙ אֱלֹהִ֔ים יְשַׁלֵּ֥ם שְׁנַ֖יִם לְרֵעֵֽהוּ׃ס

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-yitּen֩ 'i֨yshsh 'el-re'e֜hu cham֨or 'o-shsh֥or 'o-shse֛h vekal-bּehema֖h lishshemo֑r ume֛t 'o-nishshebּa֥r 'o-nishshebּa֖h 'e֥yn ro'eֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"In all cases of illegal possession of an ox, a donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any other lost property about which somebody says, 'This is mine,' both parties are to bring their cases before [2] (the judges). The one whom [2] (the judges) declares guilty must pay back double to the other."

כִּֽי־יִתֵּן֩ אִ֨ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֜הוּ חֲמ֨וֹר אוֹ־שׁ֥וֹר אוֹ־שֶׂ֛ה וְכָל־בְּהֵמָ֖ה לִשְׁמֹ֑ר וּמֵ֛ת אוֹ־נִשְׁבַּ֥ר אוֹ־נִשְׁבָּ֖ה אֵ֥ין רֹאֶֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshebu'a֣t yehva֗h tּiheyeh֙ bּe֣yn shsheneyhe֔m 'im-lo֥ shshala֛ch yad֖o bּimele֣'ket re'e֑hu velaqa֥ch bּe'ala֖yv velo֥ yeshshalּeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If anyone gives a donkey, an ox, a sheep, or any other animal to their neighbour for safekeeping and it dies or is injured or is taken away while no one is looking,"

שְׁבֻעַ֣ת יְהוָ֗ה תִּהְיֶה֙ בֵּ֣ין שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אִם־לֹ֥א שָׁלַ֛ח יָד֖וֹ בִּמְלֶ֣אכֶת רֵעֵ֑הוּ וְלָקַ֥ח בְּעָלָ֖יו וְלֹ֥א יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-gּano֥b yigּane֖b me'imּ֑o yeshshalּe֖m libe'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"the issue between them will be settled by the taking of an oath before the LORD that the neighbour did not lay hands on the other person's property. The owner is to accept this, and no restitution is required."

וְאִם־גָּנֹ֥ב יִגָּנֵ֖ב מֵעִמּ֑וֹ יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם לִבְעָלָֽיו׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-taro֥p yitּare֖p yebi'e֣hu 'e֑d hatּerepa֖h lo֥ yeshshalּeֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)"But if the animal was stolen from the neighbour, restitution must be made to the owner."

אִם־טָרֹ֥ף יִטָּרֵ֖ף יְבִאֵ֣הוּ עֵ֑ד הַטְּרֵפָ֖ה לֹ֥א יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃פ

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽy-yishshe'a֥l 'i֛yshsh me'i֥m re'e֖hu venishshebּa֣r 'o-me֑t bּe'ala֥yv 'eyn-'imּ֖o shshalּe֥m yeshshalּeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If it was torn to pieces by a wild animal, the neighbour shall bring in the remains as evidence and shall not be required to pay for the torn animal."

וְכִֽי־יִשְׁאַ֥ל אִ֛ישׁ מֵעִ֥ם רֵעֵ֖הוּ וְנִשְׁבַּ֣ר אוֹ־מֵ֑ת בְּעָלָ֥יו אֵין־עִמּ֖וֹ שַׁלֵּ֥ם יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-bּe'ala֥yv 'imּ֖o lo֣ yeshshalּe֑m 'im-shsaki֣yr h֔u bּa֖ bּishsekarֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If anyone borrows an animal from their neighbour and it is injured or dies while the owner is not present, they must make restitution."

אִם־בְּעָלָ֥יו עִמּ֖וֹ לֹ֣א יְשַׁלֵּ֑ם אִם־שָׂכִ֣יר ה֔וּא בָּ֖א בִּשְׂכָרֽוֹ׃ס

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekiֽy-yepatּe֣h 'i֗yshsh bּetula֛h 'ashshe֥r lo'-'ora֖shsah veshshaka֣b 'imּa֑hּ maho֛r yimehare֥nּah lּ֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"But if the owner is with the animal, the borrower will not have to pay. If the animal was hired, the money paid for the hire covers the loss."

וְכִֽי־יְפַתֶּ֣ה אִ֗ישׁ בְּתוּלָ֛ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־אֹרָ֖שָׂה וְשָׁכַ֣ב עִמָּ֑הּ מָהֹ֛ר יִמְהָרֶ֥נָּה לּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-ma'e֧n yema'e֛n 'abi֖yha letitּa֣hּ l֑o kּe֣sep yishsheqo֔l kּemo֖har habּetuloֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged to be married and sleeps with her, he must pay the bride-price, and she shall be his wife."

אִם־מָאֵ֧ן יְמָאֵ֛ן אָבִ֖יהָ לְתִתָּ֣הּ ל֑וֹ כֶּ֣סֶף יִשְׁקֹ֔ל כְּמֹ֖הַר הַבְּתוּלֹֽת׃ס

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): mekashshּepa֖h lo֥ techayּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If her father absolutely refuses to give her to him, he must still pay the bride-price for virgins."

מְכַשֵּׁפָ֖ה לֹ֥א תְחַיֶּֽה׃ס

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-shshoke֥b 'im-bּehema֖h m֥ot yumaֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not allow a sorceress to live."

כָּל־שֹׁכֵ֥ב עִם־בְּהֵמָ֖ה מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): zobe֥cha la'elohi֖ym yaֽchora֑m bּiletּi֥y layhva֖h lebadּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Anyone who has sexual relations with an animal is to be put to death."

זֹבֵ֥חַ לָאֱלֹהִ֖ים יָֽחֳרָ֑ם בִּלְתִּ֥י לַיהוָ֖ה לְבַדּֽוֹ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vege֥r lo'-tone֖h velo֣ tilechatze֑nּu kּiֽy-geri֥ym heyiyte֖m bּe'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed."

וְגֵ֥ר לֹא־תוֹנֶ֖ה וְלֹ֣א תִלְחָצֶ֑נּוּ כִּֽי־גֵרִ֥ים הֱיִיתֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּal-'alemana֥h veyat֖om lo֥ te'anּֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt."

כָּל־אַלְמָנָ֥ה וְיָת֖וֹם לֹ֥א תְעַנּֽוּן׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-'anּe֥h te'anּe֖h 'ot֑o kּi֣y 'im-tza'o֤q yitze'aq֙ 'ela֔y shshamo֥'a 'eshshema֖ tza'aqatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not take advantage of the [3] (widow or the fatherless)."

אִם־עַנֵּ֥ה תְעַנֶּ֖ה אֹת֑וֹ כִּ֣י אִם־צָעֹ֤ק יִצְעַק֙ אֵלַ֔י שָׁמֹ֥עַ אֶשְׁמַ֖ע צַעֲקָתֽוֹ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vechara֣h 'apּi֔y veharagetּi֥y 'eteke֖m bּecha֑reb vehay֤u neshsheykem֙ 'aleman֔ot ubeneyke֖m yetomiֽym׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)"If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry."

וְחָרָ֣ה אַפִּ֔י וְהָרַגְתִּ֥י אֶתְכֶ֖ם בֶּחָ֑רֶב וְהָי֤וּ נְשֵׁיכֶם֙ אַלְמָנ֔וֹת וּבְנֵיכֶ֖ם יְתֹמִֽים׃פ

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-kּe֣sep ׀ tּaleve֣h 'et-'amּi֗y 'et-heֽ'aniy֙ 'imּa֔ke lo'-tiheye֥h l֖o kּenoshshe֑h loֽ'-teshsiym֥un 'ala֖yv neֽshsheke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless."

אִם־כֶּ֣סֶף ׀ תַּלְוֶ֣ה אֶת־עַמִּ֗י אֶת־הֶֽעָנִי֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ לֹא־תִהְיֶ֥ה ל֖וֹ כְּנֹשֶׁ֑ה לֹֽא־תְשִׂימ֥וּן עָלָ֖יו נֶֽשֶׁךְ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-chabo֥l tּachebּo֖l shsalema֣t re'e֑ka 'ad-bּo֥ hashshּe֖meshsh tּeshshiybe֥nּu lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not treat it like a business deal; charge no interest."

אִם־חָבֹ֥ל תַּחְבֹּ֖ל שַׂלְמַ֣ת רֵעֶ֑ךָ עַד־בֹּ֥א הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ תְּשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ לֽוֹ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y hi֤v ksvth kesuto֙ lebadּa֔hּ hi֥v shsimelat֖o le'or֑o bּamּe֣h yishshekּa֔b vehayah֙ kּiֽy-yitze'a֣q 'ela֔y veshshama'etּi֖y kּiֽy-chanּ֥un 'aֽniy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"If you take your neighbour's cloak as a pledge, return it by sunset,"

כִּ֣י הִ֤וא כסותה כְסוּתוֹ֙ לְבַדָּ֔הּ הִ֥וא שִׂמְלָת֖וֹ לְעֹר֑וֹ בַּמֶּ֣ה יִשְׁכָּ֔ב וְהָיָה֙ כִּֽי־יִצְעַ֣ק אֵלַ֔י וְשָׁמַעְתִּ֖י כִּֽי־חַנּ֥וּן אָֽנִי׃ס

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): elohi֖ym lo֣ teqalּe֑l venashsi֥y be'amּeka֖ lo֥ ta'oֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"because that cloak is the only covering your neighbour has. What else can they sleep in? When they cry out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate."

אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֹ֣א תְקַלֵּ֑ל וְנָשִׂ֥יא בְעַמְּךָ֖ לֹ֥א תָאֹֽר׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): mele'ateka֥ vedime'aka֖ lo֣ te'ache֑r bּek֥or bּane֖yka tּitּen-lּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people."

מְלֵאָתְךָ֥ וְדִמְעֲךָ֖ לֹ֣א תְאַחֵ֑ר בְּכ֥וֹר בָּנֶ֖יךָ תִּתֶּן־לִּֽי׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּeֽn-tּa'ashse֥h leshshoreka֖ letzo'ne֑ka shshibe'a֤t yamiym֙ yiheye֣h 'im-'imּ֔o bּayּ֥om hashshּemiyni֖y tּitּeno-liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats. You must give me the firstborn of your sons."

כֵּֽן־תַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה לְשֹׁרְךָ֖ לְצֹאנֶ֑ךָ שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה עִם־אִמּ֔וֹ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֖י תִּתְּנוֹ־לִֽי׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aneshshey-qo֖deshsh tּihey֣un li֑y ubashsa֨r bּashsּade֤h terepah֙ lo֣ to'ke֔lu lakּe֖leb tּashshelik֥un 'otֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do the same with your cattle and your sheep. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but give them to me on the eighth day."

וְאַנְשֵׁי־קֹ֖דֶשׁ תִּהְי֣וּן לִ֑י וּבָשָׂ֨ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה טְרֵפָה֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ לַכֶּ֖לֶב תַּשְׁלִכ֥וּן אֹתֽוֹ׃ס
