Chapter 24

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-moshshe֨h 'ama֜r 'ale֣h 'el-yehva֗h 'atּah֙ ve'aharon֙ nada֣b va'abiyh֔u veshshibe'i֖ym mizּiqene֣y yishsera'e֑l vehishshetּachaviyte֖m merachoֽq׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance,"

וְאֶל־מֹשֶׁ֨ה אָמַ֜ר עֲלֵ֣ה אֶל־יְהוָ֗ה אַתָּה֙ וְאַהֲרֹן֙ נָדָ֣ב וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים מִזִּקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהִשְׁתַּחֲוִיתֶ֖ם מֵרָחֹֽק׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venigּa֨shsh moshshe֤h lebadּo֙ 'el-yehva֔h vehe֖m lo֣ yigּa֑shshu veha'a֕m lo֥ ya'al֖u 'imּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"but Moses alone is to approach the LORD; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him."

וְנִגַּ֨שׁ מֹשֶׁ֤ה לְבַדּוֹ֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה וְהֵ֖ם לֹ֣א יִגָּ֑שׁוּ וְהָעָ֕ם לֹ֥א יַעֲל֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֣ moshshe֗h vayesapּe֤r la'am֙ 'e֚t kּal-dּibere֣y yehva֔h ve'e֖t kּal-hamּishshepּati֑ym vayּa֨'an kּal-ha'a֜m q֤ol 'echad֙ vayּo֣'mer֔u kּal-hadּebari֛ym 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r yehva֖h na'ashseֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Moses went and told the people all the LORD's words and laws, they responded with one voice, "Everything the LORD has said we will do."

וַיָּבֹ֣א מֹשֶׁ֗ה וַיְסַפֵּ֤ר לָעָם֙ אֵ֚ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֑ים וַיַּ֨עַן כָּל־הָעָ֜ם ק֤וֹל אֶחָד֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה נַעֲשֶֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiketּo֣b moshshe֗h 'e֚t kּal-dּibere֣y yehva֔h vayּashshekּe֣m bּabּo֔qer vayּi֥ben mizebּe֖cha tּa֣chat haha֑r ushshetּe֤ym 'eshsereh֙ matzּeba֔h lishshene֥ym 'ashsa֖r shshibete֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses then wrote down everything the LORD had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב מֹשֶׁ֗ה אֵ֚ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּ֥בֶן מִזְבֵּ֖חַ תַּ֣חַת הָהָ֑ר וּשְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ מַצֵּבָ֔ה לִשְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֗ch 'eֽt-na'arey֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l vayּֽa'al֖u 'olo֑t vaֽyּizebּech֞u zebachi֧ym shshelami֛ym layhva֖h pּariֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the LORD.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֶֽת־נַעֲרֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּֽעֲל֖וּ עֹלֹ֑ת וַֽיִּזְבְּח֞וּ זְבָחִ֧ים שְׁלָמִ֛ים לַיהוָ֖ה פָּרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֤ch moshsheh֙ chatzi֣y hadּa֔m vayּa֖shsem bּa'agּano֑t vachatzi֣y hadּa֔m zara֖q 'al-hamּizebּeֽcha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar.

וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֹשֶׁה֙ חֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם וַיָּ֖שֶׂם בָּאַגָּנֹ֑ת וַחֲצִ֣י הַדָּ֔ם זָרַ֖ק עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּach֙ se֣per habּeri֔yt vayּiqera֖ bּe'azene֣y ha'a֑m vayּo֣'mer֔u kּo֛l 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r yehva֖h na'ashse֥h venishshemaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, "We will do everything the LORD has said; we will obey."

וַיִּקַּח֙ סֵ֣פֶר הַבְּרִ֔ית וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּאָזְנֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה נַעֲשֶׂ֥ה וְנִשְׁמָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֤ch moshsheh֙ 'et-hadּa֔m vayּizero֖q 'al-ha'a֑m vayּo֗'mer hinּe֤h daֽm-habּeriyt֙ 'ashshe֨r kּara֤t yehvah֙ 'imּake֔m 'a֥l kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'eֽlּeh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you in accordance with all these words."

וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־הַדָּ֔ם וַיִּזְרֹ֖ק עַל־הָעָ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֤ה דַֽם־הַבְּרִית֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר כָּרַ֤ת יְהוָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם עַ֥ל כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'al moshshe֖h ve'aharo֑n nadab֙ va'abiyh֔u veshshibe'i֖ym mizּiqene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up

וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֑ן נָדָב֙ וַאֲבִיה֔וּא וְשִׁבְעִ֖ים מִזִּקְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֕u 'e֖t 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֑l veta֣chat ragela֗yv kּema'ashseh֙ libena֣t hasּapּi֔yr uke'e֥tzem hashshּama֖yim latoֽhar׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and [1] (saw the God of Israel). Under His feet was something like a pavement made of [2] (lapis lazuli), as bright blue as the sky.

וַיִּרְא֕וּ אֵ֖ת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְתַ֣חַת רַגְלָ֗יו כְּמַעֲשֵׂה֙ לִבְנַ֣ת הַסַּפִּ֔יר וּכְעֶ֥צֶם הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם לָטֹֽהַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-'atziyley֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l lo֥ shshala֖ch yad֑o vaֽyּechezu֙ 'et-ha֣'elohi֔ym vayּo'kel֖u vayּishshetּֽu׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)But God did not raise His hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

וְאֶל־אֲצִילֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לֹ֥א שָׁלַ֖ח יָד֑וֹ וַֽיֶּחֱזוּ֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-moshshe֗h 'ale֥h 'ela֛y haha֖rah veheyeh-shsha֑m ve'etּena֨h leka֜ 'et-lucho֣t ha'e֗ben vehatּorah֙ vehamּitzeva֔h 'ashshe֥r kּata֖betּiy lehorotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)the LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֗ה עֲלֵ֥ה אֵלַ֛י הָהָ֖רָה וֶהְיֵה־שָׁ֑ם וְאֶתְּנָ֨ה לְךָ֜ אֶת־לֻחֹ֣ת הָאֶ֗בֶן וְהַתּוֹרָה֙ וְהַמִּצְוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּתַ֖בְתִּי לְהוֹרֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam moshshe֔h viyhoshshu֖'a meshsharet֑o vayּa֥'al moshshe֖h 'el-ha֥r ha'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses set out with Joshua his assistant, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.

וַיָּ֣קָם מֹשֶׁ֔ה וִיהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ מְשָׁרְת֑וֹ וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הַ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-hazּeqeni֤ym 'amar֙ shshebu-la֣nu baze֔h 'a֥d 'ashsher-nashsh֖ub 'aleyke֑m vehinּe֨h 'aharo֤n vechur֙ 'imּake֔m miy-ba֥'al dּebari֖ym yigּa֥shsh 'aleheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He said to the elders, "Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them."

וְאֶל־הַזְּקֵנִ֤ים אָמַר֙ שְׁבוּ־לָ֣נוּ בָזֶ֔ה עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־נָשׁ֖וּב אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְהִנֵּ֨ה אַהֲרֹ֤ן וְחוּר֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם מִי־בַ֥עַל דְּבָרִ֖ים יִגַּ֥שׁ אֲלֵהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'al moshshe֖h 'el-haha֑r vayeka֥s he'ana֖n 'et-hahaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it,

וַיַּ֥עַל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־הָהָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshekּo֤n kּebod-yehvah֙ 'al-ha֣r siyna֔y vayekasּe֥hu he'ana֖n shshe֣shshet yami֑ym vayּiqera֧ 'el-moshshe֛h bּayּ֥om hashshּebiy'i֖y mitּ֥oke he'anaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and the glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from within the cloud.

וַיִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן כְּבוֹד־יְהוָה֙ עַל־הַ֣ר סִינַ֔י וַיְכַסֵּ֥הוּ הֶעָנָ֖ן שֵׁ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָ֧א אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֛ה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֖י מִתּ֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umare'eh֙ kּeb֣od yehva֔h kּe'e֥shsh 'oke֖let bּero֣'shsh haha֑r le'eyne֖y bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)To the Israelites the glory of the LORD looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain.

וּמַרְאֵה֙ כְּב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה כְּאֵ֥שׁ אֹכֶ֖לֶת בְּרֹ֣אשׁ הָהָ֑ר לְעֵינֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ moshshe֛h bּet֥oke he'ana֖n vayּa֣'al 'el-haha֑r vayehi֤y moshsheh֙ bּaha֔r 'arebּa'i֣ym y֔om ve'arebּa'i֖ym laֽyelah׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

וַיָּבֹ֥א מֹשֶׁ֛ה בְּת֥וֹךְ הֶעָנָ֖ן וַיַּ֣עַל אֶל־הָהָ֑ר וַיְהִ֤י מֹשֶׁה֙ בָּהָ֔ר אַרְבָּעִ֣ים י֔וֹם וְאַרְבָּעִ֖ים לָֽיְלָה׃פ
