Chapter 17

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'ada֕m ch֥ud chiyda֖h umeshsho֣l mashsha֑l 'el-bּe֖yt yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Son of man, put forth a riddle, and speak a parable to the house of Israel;"

בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם ח֥וּד חִידָ֖ה וּמְשֹׁ֣ל מָשָׁ֑ל אֶל־בֵּ֖ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'amaretּa֞ kּoh-'ama֣r ׀ 'adona֣y yehvi֗h hanּe֤shsher hagּadol֙ gּed֤ol hakּenapa֨yim֙ 'e֣reke ha'e֔ber male'֙ hanּotza֔h 'ashsher-l֖o haֽriqema֑h bּa֚ 'el-halּeban֔on vayּiqּa֖ch 'et-tzamּe֥ret ha'aֽrez׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And say, "Thus says the Lord GOD; 'A great eagle with great wings, longwinged, full of feathers, which had divers colours, came to Lebanon, and took the highest branch of the cedar:'"

וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הַנֶּ֤שֶׁר הַגָּדוֹל֙ גְּד֤וֹל הַכְּנָפַ֨יִם֙ אֶ֣רֶךְ הָאֵ֔בֶר מָלֵא֙ הַנּוֹצָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ הָֽרִקְמָ֑ה בָּ֚א אֶל־הַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־צַמֶּ֥רֶת הָאָֽרֶז׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֛t ro֥'shsh yeniֽyqota֖yv qata֑p vayebiy'e֨hu֙ 'el-'e֣retz kּena֔'an bּe'i֥yr rokeli֖ym shsamֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"He cropped off the top of his young twigs, and carried it into a land of traffick; he set it in a city of merchants."

אֵ֛ת רֹ֥אשׁ יְנִֽיקוֹתָ֖יו קָטָ֑ף וַיְבִיאֵ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן בְּעִ֥יר רֹכְלִ֖ים שָׂמֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּach֙ mizּe֣ra ha'a֔retz vaֽyּitּene֖hu bּishsedeh-za֑ra qa֚ch 'al-ma֣yim rabּi֔ym tzapetzapa֖h shsamֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"He took also of the seed of the land, and planted it in a fruitful field; he placed it by great waters, and set it as a willow tree."

וַיִּקַּח֙ מִזֶּ֣רַע הָאָ֔רֶץ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ בִּשְׂדֵה־זָ֑רַע קָ֚ח עַל־מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים צַפְצָפָ֖ה שָׂמֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitzema֡ch vayehiy֩ lege֨pen sora֜chat shshipela֣t qoma֗h lipen֤ot dּaliyּotayv֙ 'ela֔yv veshsharashsha֖yv tּachetּa֣yv yiֽhey֑u vatּehi֣y lege֔pen vatּa֣'ashs bּadּi֔ym vatּeshshalּa֖ch pּo'rֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And it grew, and became a spreading vine of low stature, whose branches turned toward him, and the roots thereof were under him: so it became a vine, and brought forth branches, and shot forth sprigs."

וַיִּצְמַ֡ח וַיְהִי֩ לְגֶ֨פֶן סֹרַ֜חַת שִׁפְלַ֣ת קוֹמָ֗ה לִפְנ֤וֹת דָּלִיּוֹתָיו֙ אֵלָ֔יו וְשָׁרָשָׁ֖יו תַּחְתָּ֣יו יִֽהְי֑וּ וַתְּהִ֣י לְגֶ֔פֶן וַתַּ֣עַשׂ בַּדִּ֔ים וַתְּשַׁלַּ֖ח פֹּארֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y neֽshsher-'echad֙ gּad֔ol gּed֥ol kּenapa֖yim verab-notza֑h vehinּeh֩ hagּe֨pen hazּo֜'t kּaֽpena֧h shsharoshshe֣yha 'ala֗yv vedaֽliyּotayv֙ shshilechah-lּ֔o lehashsheq֣ot 'ota֔hּ me'arug֖ot matּa'aֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"There was also another great eagle with great wings and many feathers: and, behold, this vine did bend her roots toward him, and shot forth her branches toward him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation."

וַיְהִ֤י נֶֽשֶׁר־אֶחָד֙ גָּד֔וֹל גְּד֥וֹל כְּנָפַ֖יִם וְרַב־נוֹצָ֑ה וְהִנֵּה֩ הַגֶּ֨פֶן הַזֹּ֜את כָּֽפְנָ֧ה שָׁרֳשֶׁ֣יהָ עָלָ֗יו וְדָֽלִיּוֹתָיו֙ שִׁלְחָה־לּ֔וֹ לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת אוֹתָ֔הּ מֵעֲרֻג֖וֹת מַטָּעָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): el-shsa֥deh tּ֛ob 'el-ma֥yim rabּi֖ym hi֣y shshetula֑h la'ashs֤ot 'anap֙ velashse֣'t pּe֔riy lihey֖ot lege֥pen 'adּaֽret׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a goodly vine."

אֶל־שָׂ֥דֶה טּ֛וֹב אֶל־מַ֥יִם רַבִּ֖ים הִ֣יא שְׁתוּלָ֑ה לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת עָנָף֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את פֶּ֔רִי לִהְי֖וֹת לְגֶ֥פֶן אַדָּֽרֶת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֗r kּo֥h 'ama֛r 'adona֥y yehovi֖h tּitzela֑ch halo'֩ 'et-shsharashshe֨yha yenatּe֜q ve'et-pּireya֣hּ ׀ yeqose֣s veyabe֗shsh kּal-tarepּe֤y tzimechahּ֙ tּiyba֔shsh veloֽ'-bizero֤'a gּedolah֙ ube'am-ra֔b lemashse'֥ot 'ota֖hּ mishshּarashsheֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Say you, "Thus says the Lord GOD; 'Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and cut off the fruit thereof, that it wither? it shall wither in all the leaves of her spring, even without great power or many people to pluck it up by the roots thereof.'"

אֱמֹ֗ר כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִ֖ה תִּצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ אֶת־שָׁרָשֶׁ֨יהָ יְנַתֵּ֜ק וְאֶת־פִּרְיָ֣הּ ׀ יְקוֹסֵ֣ס וְיָבֵ֗שׁ כָּל־טַרְפֵּ֤י צִמְחָהּ֙ תִּיבָ֔שׁ וְלֹֽא־בִזְרֹ֤עַ גְּדוֹלָה֙ וּבְעַם־רָ֔ב לְמַשְׂא֥וֹת אוֹתָ֖הּ מִשָּׁרָשֶֽׁיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֥h shshetula֖h hatitzela֑ch halo'֩ kega֨'at bּa֜hּ r֤ucha haqּadiym֙ tּiyba֣shsh yabo֔shsh 'al-'arugo֥t tzimecha֖hּ tּiybaֽshsh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"Yes, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the furrows where it grew."

וְהִנֵּ֥ה שְׁתוּלָ֖ה הֲתִצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ כְגַ֨עַת בָּ֜הּ ר֤וּחַ הַקָּדִים֙ תִּיבַ֣שׁ יָבֹ֔שׁ עַל־עֲרֻגֹ֥ת צִמְחָ֖הּ תִּיבָֽשׁ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): emar-na'֙ lebe֣yt hamּe֔riy halo֥ yeda'etּe֖m mah-'e֑lּeh 'emo֗r hinּeh-ba֨ meֽleke-bּabe֤l yerushshalai֨m֙ vayּiqּa֤ch 'et-malekּahּ֙ ve'et-shsare֔yha vayּabe֥ 'ota֛m 'ela֖yv bּabeֽlah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Say now to the rebellious house, "Know you not what these things mean? tell them, Behold, the king of Babylon is come to Jerusalem, and has taken the king thereof, and the princes thereof, and led them with him to Babylon;"

אֱמָר־נָא֙ לְבֵ֣ית הַמֶּ֔רִי הֲלֹ֥א יְדַעְתֶּ֖ם מָה־אֵ֑לֶּה אֱמֹ֗ר הִנֵּה־בָ֨א מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֤ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־מַלְכָּהּ֙ וְאֶת־שָׂרֶ֔יהָ וַיָּבֵ֥א אוֹתָ֛ם אֵלָ֖יו בָּבֶֽלָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּach֙ mizּe֣ra hamּeluka֔h vayּikero֥t 'itּ֖o bּeri֑yt vayּabe֤ 'oto֙ bּe'ala֔h ve'et-'eyle֥y ha'a֖retz laqaֽch׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And has taken of the king's seed, and made a covenant with him, and has taken an oath of him: he has also taken the mighty of the land:"

וַיִּקַּח֙ מִזֶּ֣רַע הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת אִתּ֖וֹ בְּרִ֑ית וַיָּבֵ֤א אֹתוֹ֙ בְּאָלָ֔ה וְאֶת־אֵילֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ לָקָֽח׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): liֽheyot֙ mamelaka֣h shshepala֔h lebiletּi֖y hitenashsּe֑ lishshemo֥r 'et-bּeriyt֖o le'amedaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"That the kingdom might be base, that it might not lift itself up, but that by keeping of his covenant it might stand."

לִֽהְיוֹת֙ מַמְלָכָ֣ה שְׁפָלָ֔ה לְבִלְתִּ֖י הִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א לִשְׁמֹ֥ר אֶת־בְּרִית֖וֹ לְעָמְדָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimerad-bּ֗o lishshelo֤cha male'akayv֙ mitzera֔yim laֽtet-l֥o susi֖ym ve'am-ra֑b hayitzela֤ch hayimּalet֙ ha'oshse֣h 'e֔lּeh vehepe֥r bּeri֖yt venimelaֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he prosper? shall he escape that does such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?"

וַיִּמְרָד־בּ֗וֹ לִשְׁלֹ֤חַ מַלְאָכָיו֙ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָֽתֶת־ל֥וֹ סוּסִ֖ים וְעַם־רָ֑ב הֲיִצְלָ֤ח הֲיִמָּלֵט֙ הָעֹשֵׂ֣ה אֵ֔לֶּה וְהֵפֵ֥ר בְּרִ֖ית וְנִמְלָֽט׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): chay-'a֗niy ne'um֮ 'adona֣y yehvih֒ 'im-lo֗ bּimeqom֙ hamּe֨leke֙ hamּameli֣yke 'ot֔o 'ashshe֤r bּazah֙ 'et-'a֣lat֔o va'ashshe֥r hepe֖r 'et-bּeriyt֑o 'itּ֥o betoke-bּabe֖l yamֽut׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"As I live," says the Lord GOD, "surely in the place where the king dwells that made him king, whose oath he despised, and whose covenant he brake, even with him in the midst of Babylon he shall die."

חַי־אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אִם־לֹ֗א בִּמְקוֹם֙ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַמַּמְלִ֣יךְ אֹת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּזָה֙ אֶת־אָ֣לָת֔וֹ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵפֵ֖ר אֶת־בְּרִית֑וֹ אִתּ֥וֹ בְתוֹךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל יָמֽוּת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'֩ becha֨yil gּad֜ol ubeqaha֣l ra֗b ya'ashse֨h 'ot֤o pare'oh֙ bּamּilechama֔h bּishshepּo֥ke solela֖h ubiben֣ot dּaye֑q lehakeri֖yt nepashsh֥ot rabּֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:"

וְלֹא֩ בְחַ֨יִל גָּד֜וֹל וּבְקָהָ֣ל רָ֗ב יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה אוֹת֤וֹ פַרְעֹה֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה בִּשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ סֹלְלָ֖ה וּבִבְנ֣וֹת דָּיֵ֑ק לְהַכְרִ֖ית נְפָשׁ֥וֹת רַבּֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubaza֥h 'ala֖h lehape֣r bּeri֑yt vehinּe֨h nata֥n yad֛o vekal-'e֥lּeh 'ashsa֖h lo֥ yimּaleֽt׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Seeing he despised the oath by breaking the covenant, when, lo, he had given his hand, and has done all these things, he shall not escape."

וּבָזָ֥ה אָלָ֖ה לְהָפֵ֣ר בְּרִ֑ית וְהִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֥ן יָד֛וֹ וְכָל־אֵ֥לֶּה עָשָׂ֖ה לֹ֥א יִמָּלֵֽט׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֞n kּoh-'ama֨r 'adona֣y yehvih֮ chay-'aniy֒ 'im-lo֗ 'aֽlatiy֙ 'ashshe֣r bּaza֔h uberiyti֖y 'ashshe֣r hepi֑yr unetatּi֖yv bּero'shshֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "As I live, surely Mine oath that he has despised, and My covenant that he has broken, even it will I recompense upon his own head."

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֨ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֮ חַי־אָנִי֒ אִם־לֹ֗א אָֽלָתִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּזָ֔ה וּבְרִיתִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵפִ֑יר וּנְתַתִּ֖יו בְּרֹאשֽׁוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uparashsetּi֤y 'alayv֙ rishshetּi֔y venitepּa֖shs bּimetzֽudati֑y vahabiy'oti֣yhu babe֗lah venishshepּatetּi֤y 'itּo֙ shsha֔m ma'al֖o 'ashshe֥r maֽ'al-bּiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And I will spread My net upon him, and he shall be taken in My snare, and I will bring him to Babylon, and will plead with him there for his trespass that he has trespassed against Me."

וּפָרַשְׂתִּ֤י עָלָיו֙ רִשְׁתִּ֔י וְנִתְפַּ֖שׂ בִּמְצֽוּדָתִ֑י וַהֲבִיאוֹתִ֣יהוּ בָבֶ֗לָה וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֤י אִתּוֹ֙ שָׁ֔ם מַעֲל֖וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָֽעַל־בִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨t kּal-mbrchv miberacha֤yv bּekal-'agapּayv֙ bּache֣reb yipּo֔lu vehanּishshe'ari֖ym lekal-r֣ucha yipּare֑shsu viyda'etּe֕m kּi֛y 'ani֥y yehva֖h dּibּaֽretּiy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword, and they that remain shall be scattered toward all winds: and you shall know that I the LORD have spoken it."

וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־מברחו מִבְרָחָ֤יו בְּכָל־אֲגַפָּיו֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֔לוּ וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים לְכָל־ר֣וּחַ יִפָּרֵ֑שׂוּ וִידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֤h 'amar֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h velaqa֣chetּiy 'a֗niy mitzּamּe֧ret ha'e֛rez harama֖h venata֑tּiy mero֤'shsh yoֽneqotayv֙ ra֣ke 'eqeto֔p veshshata֣letּiy 'a֔niy 'a֥l har-gּabo֖ha vetalֽul׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says the Lord GOD; "I will also take of the highest branch of the high cedar, and will set it; I will crop off from the top of his young twigs a tender one, and will plant it upon an high mountain and eminent:"

כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְלָקַ֣חְתִּי אָ֗נִי מִצַּמֶּ֧רֶת הָאֶ֛רֶז הָרָמָ֖ה וְנָתָ֑תִּי מֵרֹ֤אשׁ יֹֽנְקוֹתָיו֙ רַ֣ךְ אֶקְטֹ֔ף וְשָׁתַ֣לְתִּי אָ֔נִי עַ֥ל הַר־גָּבֹ֖הַ וְתָלֽוּל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּeha֨r mer֤om yishsera'el֙ 'eshshetּole֔nּu venashsa֤ 'anap֙ ve'a֣shsah pe֔riy vehaya֖h le'e֣rez 'adּi֑yr veshshaken֣u tachetּa֗yv kּo֚l tzipּ֣or kּal-kּana֔p bּetze֥l dּaliyּota֖yv tּishshekּoֽnּah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell."

בְּהַ֨ר מְר֤וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶשְׁתֳּלֶ֔נּוּ וְנָשָׂ֤א עָנָף֙ וְעָ֣שָׂה פֶ֔רִי וְהָיָ֖ה לְאֶ֣רֶז אַדִּ֑יר וְשָׁכְנ֣וּ תַחְתָּ֗יו כֹּ֚ל צִפּ֣וֹר כָּל־כָּנָ֔ף בְּצֵ֥ל דָּלִיּוֹתָ֖יו תִּשְׁכֹּֽנָּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veֽyade'֞u kּal-'atze֣y hashsּade֗h kּi֣y 'ani֤y yehvah֙ hishshepּa֣letּiy ׀ 'e֣tz gּabo֗ha higebּa֨hetּiy֙ 'e֣tz shshapa֔l hoba֨shshetּiy֙ 'e֣tz la֔ch vehipera֖chetּiy 'e֣tz yabe֑shsh 'ani֥y yehva֖h dּibּa֥retּiy ve'ashsiֽytiy׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"And all the trees of the field shall know that I the LORD have brought down the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree to flourish: I the LORD have spoken and have done it."

וְֽיָדְע֞וּ כָּל־עֲצֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ הִשְׁפַּ֣לְתִּי ׀ עֵ֣ץ גָּבֹ֗הַ הִגְבַּ֨הְתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ שָׁפָ֔ל הוֹבַ֨שְׁתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ לָ֔ח וְהִפְרַ֖חְתִּי עֵ֣ץ יָבֵ֑שׁ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְעָשִֽׂיתִי׃פ
