Chapter 24

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֩ debar-yehva֨h 'ela֜y bּashshּana֤h hatּeshshiy'iyt֙ bּacho֣deshsh ha'ashsiyri֔y bּe'ashs֥or lacho֖deshsh le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Again in the ninth year, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

וַיְהִי֩ דְבַר־יְהוָ֨ה אֵלַ֜י בַּשָּׁנָ֤ה הַתְּשִׁיעִית֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָעֲשִׂירִ֔י בֶּעָשׂ֥וֹר לַחֹ֖דֶשׁ לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'ada֗m ktvb kּetab-leka֙ 'et-shshe֣m hayּ֔om 'et-'e֖tzem hayּ֣om hazּe֑h sama֤ke meֽleke-bּabel֙ 'el-yer֣ushshalai֔m bּe'e֖tzem hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Son of man, write you the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day."

בֶּן־אָדָ֗ם כתוב כְּתָב־לְךָ֙ אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם הַיּ֔וֹם אֶת־עֶ֖צֶם הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה סָמַ֤ךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶל֙ אֶל־יְר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם בְּעֶ֖צֶם הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umeshsho֤l 'el-bּeyt-hamּe֨riy֙ mashsha֔l ve'amaretּa֣ 'aleyhe֔m kּo֥h 'ama֖r 'adona֣y yehvi֑h shshepo֤t hasּiyr֙ shshepo֔t vegam-yetzo֥q bּ֖o maֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And utter a parable to the rebellious house, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD; 'Set on a pot, set it on, and also pour water into it:'"

וּמְשֹׁ֤ל אֶל־בֵּית־הַמֶּ֨רִי֙ מָשָׁ֔ל וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֑ה שְׁפֹ֤ת הַסִּיר֙ שְׁפֹ֔ת וְגַם־יְצֹ֥ק בּ֖וֹ מָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): eso֤p netache֨yha֙ 'ele֔yha kּal-ne֥tach t֖ob yare֣ke vekate֑p mibecha֥r 'atzami֖ym malּeֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"'Gather the pieces thereof into it, even every good piece, the thigh, and the shoulder; fill it with the choice bones.'"

אֱסֹ֤ף נְתָחֶ֨יהָ֙ אֵלֶ֔יהָ כָּל־נֵ֥תַח ט֖וֹב יָרֵ֣ךְ וְכָתֵ֑ף מִבְחַ֥ר עֲצָמִ֖ים מַלֵּֽא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibecha֤r hatzּo'n֙ laq֔ocha vega֛m dּ֥ur ha'atzami֖ym tּachetּe֑yha ratּa֣ch retache֔yha gּam-bּashshel֥u 'atzame֖yha bּetokaֽhּ׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"'Take the choice of the flock, and burn also the bones under it, and make it boil well, and let them seethe the bones of it therein.'"

מִבְחַ֤ר הַצֹּאן֙ לָק֔וֹחַ וְגַ֛ם דּ֥וּר הָעֲצָמִ֖ים תַּחְתֶּ֑יהָ רַתַּ֣ח רְתָחֶ֔יהָ גַּם־בָּשְׁל֥וּ עֲצָמֶ֖יהָ בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֞n kּoh-'ama֣r ׀ 'adona֣y yehovi֗h 'oy֮ 'i֣yr hadּamiym֒ si֚yr 'ashshe֣r chele'ata֣h ba֔hּ veche֨le'ata֔hּ lo֥ yatze'a֖h mimּe֑nּah linetache֤yha linetache֨yha֙ hotziy'a֔hּ lo'-napa֥l 'ale֖yha gּoraֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Wherefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum is therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it."

לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהֹוִ֗ה אוֹי֮ עִ֣יר הַדָּמִים֒ סִ֚יר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חֶלְאָתָ֣ה בָ֔הּ וְחֶ֨לְאָתָ֔הּ לֹ֥א יָצְאָ֖ה מִמֶּ֑נָּה לִנְתָחֶ֤יהָ לִנְתָחֶ֨יהָ֙ הוֹצִיאָ֔הּ לֹא־נָפַ֥ל עָלֶ֖יהָ גּוֹרָֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y damahּ֙ bּetoka֣hּ haya֔h 'al-tzechi֥ycha se֖la shsama֑tehu lo֤ shshepaka֨tehu֙ 'al-ha'a֔retz lekasּ֥ot 'ala֖yv 'apaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;"

כִּ֤י דָמָהּ֙ בְּתוֹכָ֣הּ הָיָ֔ה עַל־צְחִ֥יחַ סֶ֖לַע שָׂמָ֑תְהוּ לֹ֤א שְׁפָכַ֨תְהוּ֙ עַל־הָאָ֔רֶץ לְכַסּ֥וֹת עָלָ֖יו עָפָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): leha'al֤ot chemah֙ lineqo֣m naqa֔m nata֥tּiy 'et-dּama֖hּ 'al-tzechi֣ycha sa֑la lebiletּi֖y hikּasֽot׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"That it might cause fury to come up to take vengeance; I have set her blood upon the top of a rock, that it should not be covered."

לְהַעֲל֤וֹת חֵמָה֙ לִנְקֹ֣ם נָקָ֔ם נָתַ֥תִּי אֶת־דָּמָ֖הּ עַל־צְחִ֣יחַ סָ֑לַע לְבִלְתִּ֖י הִכָּסֽוֹת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֗n kּo֤h 'amar֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h '֖oy 'i֣yr hadּami֑ym gּam-'ani֖y 'agedּi֥yl hamּeduraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great."

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה א֖וֹי עִ֣יר הַדָּמִ֑ים גַּם־אֲנִ֖י אַגְדִּ֥יל הַמְּדוּרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): harebּe֤h ha'etziym֙ hadele֣q ha'e֔shsh hate֖m habּashsa֑r vehareqach֙ hamּereqacha֔h veha'atzam֖ot yechaֽru׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Heap on wood, kindle the fire, consume the flesh, and spice it well, and let the bones be burned."

הַרְבֵּ֤ה הָעֵצִים֙ הַדְלֵ֣ק הָאֵ֔שׁ הָתֵ֖ם הַבָּשָׂ֑ר וְהַרְקַח֙ הַמֶּרְקָחָ֔ה וְהָעֲצָמ֖וֹת יֵחָֽרוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'amiyde֥ha 'al-gּechale֖yha reqa֑h lema֨'an tּecha֜m vecha֣rah nechushshetּa֗hּ venitּeka֤h betokahּ֙ tume'ata֔hּ tּitּu֖m chele'ataֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Then set it empty upon the coals thereof, that the brass of it may be hot, and may burn, and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed."

וְהַעֲמִידֶ֥הָ עַל־גֶּחָלֶ֖יהָ רֵקָ֑ה לְמַ֨עַן תֵּחַ֜ם וְחָ֣רָה נְחֻשְׁתָּ֗הּ וְנִתְּכָ֤ה בְתוֹכָהּ֙ טֻמְאָתָ֔הּ תִּתֻּ֖ם חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): tּe'uni֖ym hele'a֑t veloֽ'-tetze֤ mimּe֨nּah֙ rabּa֣t chele'ata֔hּ bּe'e֖shsh chele'ataֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"She has wearied herself with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum shall be in the fire."

תְּאֻנִ֖ים הֶלְאָ֑ת וְלֹֽא־תֵצֵ֤א מִמֶּ֨נָּה֙ רַבַּ֣ת חֶלְאָתָ֔הּ בְּאֵ֖שׁ חֶלְאָתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּetume'ate֖ke zimּa֑h ya֤'an tiֽharetּiyke֙ velo֣ taha֔retּe mitּume'ateke֙ lo֣ titehariy-'֔od 'ad-haniychi֥y 'et-chamati֖y bּaֽke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"In your filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged you, and you was not purged, you shall not be purged from your filthiness anymore, till I have caused My fury to rest upon you."

בְּטֻמְאָתֵ֖ךְ זִמָּ֑ה יַ֤עַן טִֽהַרְתִּיךְ֙ וְלֹ֣א טָהַ֔רְתְּ מִטֻּמְאָתֵךְ֙ לֹ֣א תִטְהֲרִי־ע֔וֹד עַד־הֲנִיחִ֥י אֶת־חֲמָתִ֖י בָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ani֨y yehva֤h dּibּa֨retּiy֙ bּa'a֣h ve'ashsi֔ytiy loֽ'-'epera֥ velo'-'ach֖us velo֣ 'enּache֑m kּideraka֤yike veka'aliylota֨yike֙ shshepat֔uke ne'u֖m 'adona֥y yehoviֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)"I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to your ways, and according to your doings, shall they judge you," says the Lord GOD.

אֲנִ֨י יְהוָ֤ה דִּבַּ֨רְתִּי֙ בָּאָ֣ה וְעָשִׂ֔יתִי לֹֽא־אֶפְרַ֥ע וְלֹא־אָח֖וּס וְלֹ֣א אֶנָּחֵ֑ם כִּדְרָכַ֤יִךְ וְכַעֲלִילוֹתַ֨יִךְ֙ שְׁפָט֔וּךְ נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'ada֕m hineni֨y loqe֧cha mimּeka֛ 'et-machema֥d 'eyne֖yka bּemagּepa֑h velo֤ tisepּod֙ velo֣ tibekּe֔h vel֥o tab֖o dּime'ateֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Son of man, behold, I take away from you the desire of your eyes with a stroke: yet neither shall you mourn nor weep, neither shall your tears run down."

בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם הִנְנִ֨י לֹקֵ֧חַ מִמְּךָ֛ אֶת־מַחְמַ֥ד עֵינֶ֖יךָ בְּמַגֵּפָ֑ה וְלֹ֤א תִסְפֹּד֙ וְלֹ֣א תִבְכֶּ֔ה וְל֥וֹא תָב֖וֹא דִּמְעָתֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): he'ane֣q ׀ dּo֗m metiym֙ 'e֣bel loֽ'-taֽ'ashse֔h pe'eֽreka֙ chab֣oshsh 'ale֔yka une'ale֖yka tּashsi֣ym bּeragele֑yka velo֤ ta'eteh֙ 'al-shsapa֔m vele֥chem 'anashshi֖ym lo֥ to'keֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Forbear to cry, make no mourning for the dead, bind the tire of your head upon you, and put on your shoes upon your feet, and cover not your lips, and eat not the bread of men."

הֵאָנֵ֣ק ׀ דֹּ֗ם מֵתִים֙ אֵ֣בֶל לֹֽא־תַֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה פְאֵֽרְךָ֙ חֲב֣וֹשׁ עָלֶ֔יךָ וּנְעָלֶ֖יךָ תָּשִׂ֣ים בְּרַגְלֶ֑יךָ וְלֹ֤א תַעְטֶה֙ עַל־שָׂפָ֔ם וְלֶ֥חֶם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לֹ֥א תֹאכֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'adabּe֤r 'el-ha'am֙ bּabּo֔qer vatּa֥mat 'ishshetּi֖y bּa'a֑reb va'a֥'ashs bּabּo֖qer kּa'ashshe֥r tzueֽytiy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So I spoke to the people in the morning: and at even my wife died; and I did in the morning as I was commanded.

וָאֲדַבֵּ֤ר אֶל־הָעָם֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וַתָּ֥מָת אִשְׁתִּ֖י בָּעָ֑רֶב וָאַ֥עַשׂ בַּבֹּ֖קֶר כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צֻוֵּֽיתִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u 'ela֖y ha'a֑m haloֽ'-tagּi֥yd la֨nu֙ mah-'e֣lּeh lּa֔nu kּi֥y 'atּa֖h 'oshseֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the people said to me, "will you not tell us what these things are to us, that you do so?"

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלַ֖י הָעָ֑ם הֲלֹֽא־תַגִּ֥יד לָ֨נוּ֙ מָה־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֔נוּ כִּ֥י אַתָּ֖ה עֹשֶֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'oma֖r 'aleyhe֑m dּeba֨r-yehva֔h haya֥h 'ela֖y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then I answered them, "The word of the LORD came to me, saying,"

וָאֹמַ֖ר אֲלֵיהֶ֑ם דְּבַ֨ר־יְהוָ֔ה הָיָ֥ה אֵלַ֖י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֣r ׀ lebe֣yt yishsera'e֗l kּoֽh-'amar֮ 'adona֣y yehvih֒ hineni֨y mechalּe֤l 'et-miqedּashshiy֙ gּe'֣on 'uzּeke֔m machema֥d 'eֽyneyke֖m umachema֣l napeshsheke֑m ubeneyke֧m ubenֽoteyke֛m 'ashshe֥r 'azabetּe֖m bּache֥reb yipּoֽlu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Speak to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD; 'Behold, I will profane My sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pities; and your sons and your daughters whom you have left shall fall by the sword.'"

אֱמֹ֣ר ׀ לְבֵ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כֹּֽה־אָמַר֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ הִנְנִ֨י מְחַלֵּ֤ל אֶת־מִקְדָּשִׁי֙ גְּא֣וֹן עֻזְּכֶ֔ם מַחְמַ֥ד עֵֽינֵיכֶ֖ם וּמַחְמַ֣ל נַפְשְׁכֶ֑ם וּבְנֵיכֶ֧ם וּבְנֽוֹתֵיכֶ֛ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲזַבְתֶּ֖ם בַּחֶ֥רֶב יִפֹּֽלוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashsiyte֖m kּa'ashshe֣r 'ashsi֑ytiy 'al-shsapam֙ lo֣ ta'et֔u vele֥chem 'anashshi֖ym lo֥ to'keֽlu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And you shall do as I have done: you shall not cover your lips, nor eat the bread of men."

וַעֲשִׂיתֶ֖ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֑יתִי עַל־שָׂפָם֙ לֹ֣א תַעְט֔וּ וְלֶ֥חֶם אֲנָשִׁ֖ים לֹ֥א תֹאכֵֽלוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): upe'ereke֣m 'al-ra'shsheyke֗m venaֽ'aleykem֙ bּerageleyke֔m lo֥ tisepּed֖u velo֣ tibekּ֑u unemaqּotem֙ bּa'avono֣teyke֔m unehametּe֖m 'i֥yshsh 'el-'achiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And your tires shall be upon your heads, and your shoes upon your feet: you shall not mourn nor weep; but you shall pine away for your iniquities, and mourn one toward another."

וּפְאֵרֵכֶ֣ם עַל־רָאשֵׁיכֶ֗ם וְנַֽעֲלֵיכֶם֙ בְּרַגְלֵיכֶ֔ם לֹ֥א תִסְפְּד֖וּ וְלֹ֣א תִבְכּ֑וּ וּנְמַקֹּתֶם֙ בַּעֲוֺנֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם וּנְהַמְתֶּ֖ם אִ֥ישׁ אֶל־אָחִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֨h yechezeqe֤'l lakem֙ lemope֔t kּeko֥l 'ashsher-'ashsa֖h tּa'ashs֑u bּebo'a֕hּ viֽyda'etּe֕m kּi֥y 'ani֖y 'adona֥y yehviֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus Ezekiel is to you a sign: according to all that he has done shall you do: and when this comes, you shall know that I am the Lord GOD."

וְהָיָ֨ה יְחֶזְקֵ֤אל לָכֶם֙ לְמוֹפֵ֔ת כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֖ה תַּעֲשׂ֑וּ בְּבֹאָ֕הּ וִֽידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֥י אֲנִ֖י אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h ben-'ada֔m hal֗o bּey֨om qachetּi֤y mehem֙ 'et-ma֣'uzּa֔m meshs֖oshs tּipe'aretּa֑m 'et-machema֤d 'eֽyneyhem֙ ve'et-mashsּa֣ napeshsha֔m bּeneyhe֖m ubenoteyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Also, you son of man, shall it not be in the day when I take from them their strength, the joy of their glory, the desire of their eyes, and that whereupon they set their minds, their sons and their daughters,"

וְאַתָּ֣ה בֶן־אָדָ֔ם הֲל֗וֹא בְּי֨וֹם קַחְתִּ֤י מֵהֶם֙ אֶת־מָ֣עוּזָּ֔ם מְשׂ֖וֹשׂ תִּפְאַרְתָּ֑ם אֶת־מַחְמַ֤ד עֵֽינֵיהֶם֙ וְאֶת־מַשָּׂ֣א נַפְשָׁ֔ם בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם וּבְנוֹתֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֣om hah֔u yab֥o hapּali֖yt 'ele֑yka lehashshema'֖ut 'azenaֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"That he that escapes in that day shall come to you, to cause you to hear it with your ears?"

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא יָב֥וֹא הַפָּלִ֖יט אֵלֶ֑יךָ לְהַשְׁמָע֖וּת אָזְנָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֣om hah֗u yipּa֤tach pּi֨yka֙ 'et-hapּali֔yt utedabּe֕r velo֥ teֽ'ale֖m '֑od vehayi֤yta lahem֙ lemope֔t veyade'֖u kּiֽy-'ani֥y yehvaֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"In that day shall your mouth be opened to him who is escaped, and you shall speak, and be no more dumb: and you shall be a sign to them; and they shall know that I am the LORD."

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא יִפָּ֤תַח פִּ֨יךָ֙ אֶת־הַפָּלִ֔יט וּתְדַבֵּ֕ר וְלֹ֥א תֵֽאָלֵ֖ם ע֑וֹד וְהָיִ֤יתָ לָהֶם֙ לְמוֹפֵ֔ת וְיָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ס
