Chapter 31

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּe'acha֤t 'eshsereh֙ shshana֔h bּashshּeliyshshi֖y bּe'echa֣d lacho֑deshsh haya֥h debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥y le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And it came to pass in the eleventh year, in the third month, in the first day of the month, that the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

וַיְהִ֗י בְּאַחַ֤ת עֶשְׂרֵה֙ שָׁנָ֔ה בַּשְּׁלִישִׁ֖י בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הָיָ֥ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'ada֕m 'emo֛r 'el-pּare'o֥h meֽleke-mitzera֖yim ve'el-hamon֑o 'el-mi֖y dּami֥yta begadeleֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Son of man, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; 'Whom are you like in your greatness?'"

בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם אֱמֹ֛ר אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֖יִם וְאֶל־הֲמוֹנ֑וֹ אֶל־מִ֖י דָּמִ֥יתָ בְגָדְלֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֨h 'ashshּ֜ur 'e֣rez bּalּeban֗on yepe֥h 'ana֛p vecho֥reshsh metza֖l ugeba֣hּ qoma֑h ube֣yn 'aboti֔ym hayeta֖h tzamּaretּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Behold, the Assyrian was a cedar in Lebanon with fair branches, and with a shadowing shroud, and of an high stature; and his top was among the thick boughs."

הִנֵּ֨ה אַשּׁ֜וּר אֶ֣רֶז בַּלְּבָנ֗וֹן יְפֵ֥ה עָנָ֛ף וְחֹ֥רֶשׁ מֵצַ֖ל וּגְבַ֣הּ קוֹמָ֑ה וּבֵ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֔ים הָיְתָ֖ה צַמַּרְתּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ma֣yim gּidּel֔uhu tּeh֖om roֽmema֑tehu 'et-naharote֗yha holeke֙ sebiyb֣ot matּa'a֔hּ ve'et-tּe'alote֣yha shshilecha֔h 'e֖l kּal-'atze֥y hashsּadeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The waters made him great, the deep set him up on high with her rivers running round about his plants, and sent out her little rivers to all the trees of the field."

מַ֣יִם גִּדְּל֔וּהוּ תְּה֖וֹם רֹֽמְמָ֑תְהוּ אֶת־נַהֲרֹתֶ֗יהָ הֹלֵךְ֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת מַטָּעָ֔הּ וְאֶת־תְּעָלֹתֶ֣יהָ שִׁלְחָ֔ה אֶ֖ל כָּל־עֲצֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּen֙ gּabeha֣ qomat֔o mikּo֖l 'atze֣y hashsּade֑h vatּirebּe֨ynah saֽre'apּota֜yv vatּe'era֧kenah p'rtv po'rota֛yv mimּa֥yim rabּi֖ym bּeshshalּechֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore his stature was exalted above all the trees of the field, and his boughs were multiplied, and his branches became long because of the multitude of waters, when he shot forth."

עַל־כֵּן֙ גָּבְהָ֣א קֹמָת֔וֹ מִכֹּ֖ל עֲצֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וַתִּרְבֶּ֨ינָה סַֽרְעַפֹּתָ֜יו וַתֶּאֱרַ֧כְנָה פארתו פֹארֹתָ֛יו מִמַּ֥יִם רַבִּ֖ים בְּשַׁלְּחֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּise'apּota֤yv qiֽnenu֙ kּal-'֣op hashshּama֔yim veta֤chat pּoֽ'rotayv֙ yaֽled֔u kּo֖l chayּa֣t hashsּade֑h ubetzilּo֙ yeֽshsheb֔u kּo֖l gּoyi֥m rabּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"All the fowls of heaven made their nests in his boughs, and under his branches did all the beasts of the field bring forth their young, and under his shadow dwelt all great nations."

בִּסְעַפֹּתָ֤יו קִֽנְנוּ֙ כָּל־ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְתַ֤חַת פֹּֽארֹתָיו֙ יָֽלְד֔וּ כֹּ֖ל חַיַּ֣ת הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה וּבְצִלּוֹ֙ יֵֽשְׁב֔וּ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיִ֥ם רַבִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeyi֣p bּegadel֔o bּe'o֖reke dּaֽliyּota֑yv kּiֽy-haya֥h shshareshsh֖o 'el-ma֥yim rabּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Thus was he fair in his greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters."

וַיְּיִ֣ף בְּגָדְל֔וֹ בְּאֹ֖רֶךְ דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו כִּֽי־הָיָ֥ה שָׁרְשׁ֖וֹ אֶל־מַ֥יִם רַבִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): arazi֣ym loֽ'-'amamuhu֮ bּegan-'elohiym֒ bּeroshshi֗ym lo֤ damu֙ 'el-se'apּota֔yv ve'aremoni֥ym loֽ'-hay֖u kּepoֽ'rota֑yv kּal-'etz֙ bּegan-'elohi֔ym lo'-dama֥h 'ela֖yv bּeyapeyֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir trees were not like his boughs, and the chestnut trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like him in his beauty."

אֲרָזִ֣ים לֹֽא־עֲמָמֻהוּ֮ בְּגַן־אֱלֹהִים֒ בְּרוֹשִׁ֗ים לֹ֤א דָמוּ֙ אֶל־סְעַפֹּתָ֔יו וְעַרְמֹנִ֥ים לֹֽא־הָי֖וּ כְּפֹֽארֹתָ֑יו כָּל־עֵץ֙ בְּגַן־אֱלֹהִ֔ים לֹא־דָמָ֥ה אֵלָ֖יו בְּיָפְיֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): yape֣h 'ashsiyti֔yv bּero֖b dּaֽliyּota֑yv vayeqane'u֨hu֙ kּal-'atzey-'e֔den 'ashshe֖r bּega֥n ha'elohiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him."

יָפֶ֣ה עֲשִׂיתִ֔יו בְּרֹ֖ב דָּֽלִיּוֹתָ֑יו וַיְקַנְאֻ֨הוּ֙ כָּל־עֲצֵי־עֵ֔דֶן אֲשֶׁ֖ר בְּגַ֥ן הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֗n kּo֤h 'amar֙ 'adona֣y yehvi֔h ya֕'an 'ashshe֥r gּaba֖hetּa bּeqoma֑h vayּitּe֤n tzamּaretּo֙ 'el-bּe֣yn 'aboti֔ym vera֥m lebab֖o bּegabehֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; "Because you hast lifted up yourself in height, and he has shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height;"

לָכֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה יַ֕עַן אֲשֶׁ֥ר גָּבַ֖הְתָּ בְּקוֹמָ֑ה וַיִּתֵּ֤ן צַמַּרְתּוֹ֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ין עֲבוֹתִ֔ים וְרָ֥ם לְבָב֖וֹ בְּגָבְהֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨tּene֔hu bּeya֖d 'e֣yl gּoyi֑m 'ashs֤o yaֽ'ashseh֙ l֔o kּerishshe'֖o gּerashshetּiֽhu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him: I have driven him out for his wickedness."

וְאֶ֨תְּנֵ֔הוּ בְּיַ֖ד אֵ֣יל גּוֹיִ֑ם עָשׂ֤וֹ יַֽעֲשֶׂה֙ ל֔וֹ כְּרִשְׁע֖וֹ גֵּרַשְׁתִּֽהוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikeretu֧hu zari֛ym 'ariytze֥y goyi֖m vaֽyּitּeshshu֑hu 'el-he֠hariym ubekal-gּe֨'ay֜ot napel֣u daliyּota֗yv vatּishshּaba֤renah poֽ'rotayv֙ bּekol֙ 'apiyqe֣y ha'a֔retz vayּered֧u mitzּilּ֛o kּal-'amּe֥y ha'a֖retz vaֽyּitּeshshuֽhu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him: upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him."

וַיִּכְרְתֻ֧הוּ זָרִ֛ים עָרִיצֵ֥י גוֹיִ֖ם וַֽיִּטְּשֻׁ֑הוּ אֶל־הֶ֠הָרִים וּבְכָל־גֵּ֨אָי֜וֹת נָפְל֣וּ דָלִיּוֹתָ֗יו וַתִּשָּׁבַ֤רְנָה פֹֽארֹתָיו֙ בְּכֹל֙ אֲפִיקֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֵּרְד֧וּ מִצִּלּ֛וֹ כָּל־עַמֵּ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ וַֽיִּטְּשֻֽׁהוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-mapּaletּ֥o yishshekּen֖u kּal-'֣op hashshּama֑yim ve'el-pּo'rota֣yv hay֔u kּo֖l chayּa֥t hashsּadeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches:"

עַל־מַפַּלְתּ֥וֹ יִשְׁכְּנ֖וּ כָּל־ע֣וֹף הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְאֶל־פֹּארֹתָ֣יו הָי֔וּ כֹּ֖ל חַיַּ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): lema֡'an 'ashsher֩ lo'-yigebּeh֨u beqomata֜m kּal-'atzey-ma֗yim veloֽ'-yitּen֤u 'et-tzamּaretּam֙ 'el-bּe֣yn 'aboti֔ym veloֽ'-ya'amed֧u 'eleyhe֛m bּegabeha֖m kּal-shsho֣tey ma֑yim kּiֽy-kulּam֩ nitּen֨u lamּa֜vet 'el-'e֣retz tּachetּi֗yt bּet֛oke bּene֥y 'ada֖m 'el-y֥oredey bֽor׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered to death, to the nether parts of the earth, in the midst of the children of men, with them that go down to the pit."

לְמַ֡עַן אֲשֶׁר֩ לֹא־יִגְבְּה֨וּ בְקוֹמָתָ֜ם כָּל־עֲצֵי־מַ֗יִם וְלֹֽא־יִתְּנ֤וּ אֶת־צַמַּרְתָּם֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֔ים וְלֹֽא־יַעַמְד֧וּ אֵלֵיהֶ֛ם בְּגָבְהָ֖ם כָּל־שֹׁ֣תֵי מָ֑יִם כִּֽי־כֻלָּם֩ נִתְּנ֨וּ לַמָּ֜וֶת אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ תַּחְתִּ֗ית בְּת֛וֹךְ בְּנֵ֥י אָדָ֖ם אֶל־י֥וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּoֽh-'ama֞r 'adona֣y yehvi֗h bּey֨om ridetּ֤o shshe'֨olah֙ he'eba֜letּiy kּisּe֤tiy 'alayv֙ 'et-tּeh֔om vaֽ'emena'֙ naharote֔yha vayּikּale'֖u ma֣yim rabּi֑ym va'aqedּi֤r 'alayv֙ leban֔on vekal-'atze֥y hashsּade֖h 'ala֥yv 'ulepּeֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Thus says the Lord GOD; "In the day when he went down to the grave I caused a mourning: I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him."

כֹּֽה־אָמַ֞ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה בְּי֨וֹם רִדְתּ֤וֹ שְׁא֨וֹלָה֙ הֶאֱבַ֜לְתִּי כִּסֵּ֤תִי עָלָיו֙ אֶת־תְּה֔וֹם וָֽאֶמְנַע֙ נַהֲרוֹתֶ֔יהָ וַיִּכָּלְא֖וּ מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֑ים וָאַקְדִּ֤ר עָלָיו֙ לְבָנ֔וֹן וְכָל־עֲצֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה עָלָ֥יו עֻלְפֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): miqּ֤ol mapּaletּo֙ hire'a֣shshetּiy goyi֔m bּehoridi֥y 'ot֛o shshe'֖olah 'et-y֣oredey b֑or vayּinּa֨cham֜u bּe'e֤retz tּachetּiyt֙ kּal-'atzey-'e֔den mibecha֥r vetob-leban֖on kּal-shsho֥tey maֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit: and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth."

מִקּ֤וֹל מַפַּלְתּוֹ֙ הִרְעַ֣שְׁתִּי גוֹיִ֔ם בְּהוֹרִדִ֥י אֹת֛וֹ שְׁא֖וֹלָה אֶת־י֣וֹרְדֵי ב֑וֹר וַיִּנָּ֨חֲמ֜וּ בְּאֶ֤רֶץ תַּחְתִּית֙ כָּל־עֲצֵי־עֵ֔דֶן מִבְחַ֥ר וְטוֹב־לְבָנ֖וֹן כָּל־שֹׁ֥תֵי מָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-he֗m 'itּ֛o yared֥u shshe'֖olah 'el-chaleley-cha֑reb uzero'֛o yashsheb֥u betzilּ֖o bּet֥oke gּoyiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"They also went down into hell with him to them that be slain with the sword; and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen."

גַּם־הֵ֗ם אִתּ֛וֹ יָרְד֥וּ שְׁא֖וֹלָה אֶל־חַלְלֵי־חָ֑רֶב וּזְרֹע֛וֹ יָשְׁב֥וּ בְצִלּ֖וֹ בְּת֥וֹךְ גּוֹיִֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): el-mi֨y dami֥yta kּa֛kah bּekab֥od ubego֖del bּa'atzey-'e֑den vehuradetּa֨ 'et-'atzey-'e֜den 'el-'e֣retz tּachetּi֗yt bּet֨oke 'areli֤ym tּishshekּab֙ 'et-chaleley-che֔reb h֤u pare'oh֙ vekal-hamono֔h ne'u֖m 'adona֥y yehviֽh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)"To whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness among the trees of Eden? yet shall you be brought down with the trees of Eden to the nether parts of the earth: you shall lie in the midst of the uncircumcised with them that be slain by the sword. This is Pharaoh and all his multitude," says the Lord GOD.

אֶל־מִ֨י דָמִ֥יתָ כָּ֛כָה בְּכָב֥וֹד וּבְגֹ֖דֶל בַּעֲצֵי־עֵ֑דֶן וְהוּרַדְתָּ֨ אֶת־עֲצֵי־עֵ֜דֶן אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ תַּחְתִּ֗ית בְּת֨וֹךְ עֲרֵלִ֤ים תִּשְׁכַּב֙ אֶת־חַלְלֵי־חֶ֔רֶב ה֤וּא פַרְעֹה֙ וְכָל־הֲמוֹנֹ֔ה נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהוִֽה׃ס
