Chapter 8

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛lּeh ra'shshe֥y 'aboteyhe֖m vehiteyacheshsa֑m ha'oli֣ym 'imּi֗y bּemalek֛ut 'aretּacheshsha֥setּe hamּe֖leke mibּabeֽl׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)These are the family heads and those registered with them who came up with me from Babylon during the reign of King Artaxerxes:

וְאֵ֛לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֥י אֲבֹתֵיהֶ֖ם וְהִתְיַחְשָׂ֑ם הָעֹלִ֣ים עִמִּ֗י בְּמַלְכ֛וּת אַרְתַּחְשַׁ֥סְתְּא הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ מִבָּבֶֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּene֤y piֽynechas֙ gּeֽreshsho֔m s mibּene֥y 'iytama֖r dּaniyּe֑'l s mibּene֥y davi֖yd chatּֽushsh׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Phinehas: Gershom; of the descendants of Ithamar: Daniel; of the descendants of David: Hattush

מִבְּנֵ֤י פִֽינְחָס֙ גֵּֽרְשֹׁ֔ם ס מִבְּנֵ֥י אִיתָמָ֖ר דָּנִיֵּ֑אל ס מִבְּנֵ֥י דָוִ֖יד חַטּֽוּשׁ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּene֣y shshekaneya֔h s mibּene֥y pare'o֖shsh zekareya֑h ve'imּ֛o hiteyache֥shs lizekari֖ym me'a֥h vachamishshּiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Shecaniah; of the descendants of Parosh: Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;

מִבְּנֵ֣י שְׁכַנְיָ֔ה ס מִבְּנֵ֥י פַרְעֹ֖שׁ זְכַרְיָ֑ה וְעִמּ֛וֹ הִתְיַחֵ֥שׂ לִזְכָרִ֖ים מֵאָ֥ה וַחֲמִשִּֽׁים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּeney֙ pּacha֣t mo'a֔b 'eleyehֽo'eyna֖y bּen-zeraֽcheya֑h ve'imּ֖o ma'ta֥yim hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Pahath-Moab: Eliehoenai son of Zerahiah, and with him 200 men;

מִבְּנֵי֙ פַּחַ֣ת מוֹאָ֔ב אֶלְיְהֽוֹעֵינַ֖י בֶּן־זְרַֽחְיָ֑ה וְעִמּ֖וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּene֥y shshekaneya֖h bּen-yachaziy'e֑l ve'imּ֕o shshelo֥shsh me'֖ot hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Zattu: Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;

מִבְּנֵ֥י שְׁכַנְיָ֖ה בֶּן־יַחֲזִיאֵ֑ל וְעִמּ֕וֹ שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y 'adi֔yn 'e֖bed bּen-yonata֑n ve'imּ֖o chamishshּi֥ym hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Adin: Ebed son of Jonathan, and with him 50 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י עָדִ֔ין עֶ֖בֶד בֶּן־יוֹנָתָ֑ן וְעִמּ֖וֹ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y 'eyla֔m yeshshaֽ'eya֖h bּen-'ataleya֑h ve'imּ֖o shshibe'i֥ym hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Elam: Jeshaiah son of Athaliah, and with him 70 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י עֵילָ֔ם יְשַֽׁעְיָ֖ה בֶּן־עֲתַלְיָ֑ה וְעִמּ֖וֹ שִׁבְעִ֥ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y shshepateya֔h zebadeya֖h bּen-miֽyka'e֑l ve'imּ֖o shshemoni֥ym hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Shephatiah: Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י שְׁפַטְיָ֔ה זְבַדְיָ֖ה בֶּן־מִֽיכָאֵ֑ל וְעִמּ֖וֹ שְׁמֹנִ֥ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): mibּene֣y yo'a֔b 'obadeya֖h bּen-yechiy'e֑l ve'imּ֕o ma'ta֛yim ushshemona֥h 'ashsa֖r hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Joab: Obadiah son of Jehiel, and with him 218 men;

מִבְּנֵ֣י יוֹאָ֔ב עֹבַדְיָ֖ה בֶּן־יְחִיאֵ֑ל וְעִמּ֕וֹ מָאתַ֛יִם וּשְׁמֹנָ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֥y shshelomi֖yt bּen-yosipeya֑h ve'imּ֕o me'a֥h veshshishshּi֖ym hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Bani: Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֥י שְׁלוֹמִ֖ית בֶּן־יוֹסִפְיָ֑ה וְעִמּ֕וֹ מֵאָ֥ה וְשִׁשִּׁ֖ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y beba֔y zekareya֖h bּen-bּeba֑y ve'imּ֕o 'eshseri֥ym ushshemona֖h hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Bebai: Zechariah son of Bebai, and with him 28 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י בֵבַ֔י זְכַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן־בֵּבָ֑י וְעִמּ֕וֹ עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וּשְׁמֹנָ֖ה הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y 'azegּa֔d yochana֖n bּen-haqּata֑n ve'imּ֕o me'a֥h va'ashsara֖h hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Azgad: Johanan son of Hakkatan, and with him 110 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י עַזְגָּ֔ד יוֹחָנָ֖ן בֶּן־הַקָּטָ֑ן וְעִמּ֕וֹ מֵאָ֥ה וַעֲשָׂרָ֖ה הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֣y 'adoniyqam֮ 'acharoniym֒ ve'e֣lּeh shshemota֔m 'eliype֖let ye'iy'e֣l uֽshshema'eya֑h ve'imּahe֖m shshishshּi֥ym hazּekariֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Adonikam, the last ones: Eliphelet, Jeuel and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;

וּמִבְּנֵ֣י אֲדֹנִיקָם֮ אַחֲרֹנִים֒ וְאֵ֣לֶּה שְׁמוֹתָ֔ם אֱלִיפֶ֖לֶט יְעִיאֵ֣ל וּֽשְׁמַעְיָ֑ה וְעִמָּהֶ֖ם שִׁשִּׁ֥ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umibּene֥y bigeva֖y 'uta֣y vzbvd vezakּ֑ur ve'imּ֖o shshibe'i֥ym hazּekariֽym׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)of the descendants of Bigvai: Uthai and Zaccur, and with them 70 men.

וּמִבְּנֵ֥י בִגְוַ֖י עוּתַ֣י וזבוד וְזַכּ֑וּר וְעִמּ֖וֹ שִׁבְעִ֥ים הַזְּכָרִֽים׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽ'eqebּetze֗m 'el-hanּahar֙ habּa֣ 'eֽl-'ahava֔ vanּachane֥h shsha֖m yami֣ym shsheloshsha֑h va'abi֤ynah ba'am֙ ubakּo֣hani֔ym umibּene֥y levi֖y lo'-matza֥'tiy shshaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I assembled them at the canal that flows toward Ahava, and we camped there three days. When I checked among the people and the priests, I found no Levites there.

וָֽאֶקְבְּצֵ֗ם אֶל־הַנָּהָר֙ הַבָּ֣א אֶֽל־אַהֲוָ֔א וַנַּחֲנֶ֥ה שָׁ֖ם יָמִ֣ים שְׁלֹשָׁ֑ה וָאָבִ֤ינָה בָעָם֙ וּבַכֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים וּמִבְּנֵ֥י לֵוִ֖י לֹא־מָצָ֥אתִי שָֽׁם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'eshshelecha֡h le'eliy'e֡zer la'ariy'e֡l liֽ֠shshema'eyah ule'elenata֨n uleyari֜yb ule'elenata֧n ulenata֛n velizekareya֥h velimeshshulּa֖m ra'shshi֑ym uleyoyari֥yb ule'elenata֖n mebiyniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah and Meshullam, who were leaders, and Joiarib and Elnathan, who were men of learning,

וָאֶשְׁלְחָ֡ה לֶאֱלִיעֶ֡זֶר לַאֲרִיאֵ֡ל לִֽ֠שְׁמַעְיָה וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֨ן וּלְיָרִ֜יב וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֧ן וּלְנָתָ֛ן וְלִזְכַרְיָ֥ה וְלִמְשֻׁלָּ֖ם רָאשִׁ֑ים וּלְיוֹיָרִ֥יב וּלְאֶלְנָתָ֖ן מְבִינִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): v'vtz'h va'atzaue֤h 'otam֙ 'al-'idּ֣o haro֔'shsh bּekasipeya֖ hamּaq֑om va'ashsiymah֩ bּepiyhe֨m dּebari֜ym le֠dabּer 'el-'idּ֨o 'achi֤yv hntvnym hanּetiyniym֙ bּekasipeya֣ hamּaq֔om lehaֽbiy'-la֥nu meshshareti֖ym lebe֥yt 'eloheֽynu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and I sent them to Iddo, the leader in Kasiphia. I told them what to say to Iddo and his associates, the temple servants in Kasiphia, so that they might bring attendants to us for the house of our God.

ואוצאה וָאֲצַוֶּ֤ה אוֹתָם֙ עַל־אִדּ֣וֹ הָרֹ֔אשׁ בְּכָסִפְיָ֖א הַמָּק֑וֹם וָאָשִׂימָה֩ בְּפִיהֶ֨ם דְּבָרִ֜ים לְ֠דַבֵּר אֶל־אִדּ֨וֹ אָחִ֤יו הנתונים הַנְּתִינִים֙ בְּכָסִפְיָ֣א הַמָּק֔וֹם לְהָֽבִיא־לָ֥נוּ מְשָׁרְתִ֖ים לְבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabi֨y'ּu la֜nu kּeyad-'elohe֨ynu hatּoba֤h 'ale֨ynu֙ 'i֣yshsh shse֔kel mibּene֣y macheli֔y bּen-levi֖y bּen-yishsera'e֑l veshshereֽbeya֛h ubana֥yv ve'echa֖yv shshemona֥h 'ashsaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel, and Sherebiah’s sons and brothers, 18 in all;

וַיָּבִ֨יאּוּ לָ֜נוּ כְּיַד־אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ הַטּוֹבָ֤ה עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ שֶׂ֔כֶל מִבְּנֵ֣י מַחְלִ֔י בֶּן־לֵוִ֖י בֶּן־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְשֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֛ה וּבָנָ֥יו וְאֶחָ֖יו שְׁמֹנָ֥ה עָשָֽׂר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-chashshabeya֔h ve'itּ֥o yeshshaֽ'eya֖h mibּene֣y merari֑y 'echa֥yv ubeneyhe֖m 'eshseriֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)and Hashabiah, together with Jeshaiah from the descendants of Merari, and his brothers and sons, 20 in all.

וְאֶת־חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה וְאִתּ֥וֹ יְשַֽׁעְיָ֖ה מִבְּנֵ֣י מְרָרִ֑י אֶחָ֥יו וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם עֶשְׂרִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umin-hanּetiyni֗ym shshenּata֨n dּavi֤yd vehashsּariym֙ la'aboda֣t haleviyּi֔m netiyni֖ym ma'ta֣yim ve'eshseri֑ym kּulּa֖m niqּeb֥u beshshemֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)They also brought 220 of the temple servants, a body that David and the officials had established to assist the Levites. All were registered by name.

וּמִן־הַנְּתִינִ֗ים שֶׁנָּתַ֨ן דָּוִ֤יד וְהַשָּׂרִים֙ לַעֲבֹדַ֣ת הַלְוִיִּ֔ם נְתִינִ֖ים מָאתַ֣יִם וְעֶשְׂרִ֑ים כֻּלָּ֖ם נִקְּב֥וּ בְשֵׁמֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'eqera֨ shsha֥m tzom֙ 'al-hanּaha֣r 'ahava֔ lehite'anּ֖ot lipene֣y 'elohe֑ynu lebaqּe֤shsh mimּe֨nּu֙ dּe֣reke yeshshara֔h la֥nu uletapּe֖nu ulekal-rekushsheֽnu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions.

וָאֶקְרָ֨א שָׁ֥ם צוֹם֙ עַל־הַנָּהָ֣ר אַהֲוָ֔א לְהִתְעַנּ֖וֹת לִפְנֵ֣י אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ לְבַקֵּ֤שׁ מִמֶּ֨נּוּ֙ דֶּ֣רֶךְ יְשָׁרָ֔ה לָ֥נוּ וּלְטַפֵּ֖נוּ וּלְכָל־רְכוּשֵֽׁנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y bo֗shshetּiy lishshe'֤ol min-hamּe֨leke֙ cha֣yil uparashshi֔ym le'azere֥nu me'oye֖b bּadּa֑reke kּiֽy-'ama֨renu lamּe֜leke le'mo֗r yad-'elohe֤ynu 'al-kּal-mebaqeshshayv֙ letoba֔h ve'uzּ֣o ve'apּ֔o 'a֖l kּal-'ozebaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, "The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him."

כִּ֣י בֹ֗שְׁתִּי לִשְׁא֤וֹל מִן־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ חַ֣יִל וּפָרָשִׁ֔ים לְעָזְרֵ֥נוּ מֵאוֹיֵ֖ב בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ כִּֽי־אָמַ֨רְנוּ לַמֶּ֜לֶךְ לֵאמֹ֗ר יַד־אֱלֹהֵ֤ינוּ עַל־כָּל־מְבַקְשָׁיו֙ לְטוֹבָ֔ה וְעֻזּ֣וֹ וְאַפּ֔וֹ עַ֖ל כָּל־עֹזְבָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּatz֛umah vanּebaqeshsha֥h me'elohe֖ynu 'al-zo֑'t vayּe'ate֖r laֽnu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

וַנָּצ֛וּמָה וַנְּבַקְשָׁ֥ה מֵאֱלֹהֵ֖ינוּ עַל־זֹ֑את וַיֵּעָתֵ֖ר לָֽנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abedּi֛ylah mishsּare֥y hakּohani֖ym shshene֣ym 'ashsa֑r leshshereֽbeya֣h chashshabeya֔h ve'imּahe֥m me'acheyhe֖m 'ashsaraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, namely, Sherebiah, Hashabiah and ten of their brothers,

וָאַבְדִּ֛ילָה מִשָּׂרֵ֥י הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים שְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂ֑ר לְשֵׁרֵֽבְיָ֣ה חֲשַׁבְיָ֔ה וְעִמָּהֶ֥ם מֵאֲחֵיהֶ֖ם עֲשָׂרָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): v'shqvlh va'eshsheqola֣h lahe֔m 'et-hakּe֥sep ve'et-hazּaha֖b ve'et-hakּeli֑ym tּeruma֣t bּeyt-'elohe֗ynu haheri֨ymu֙ hamּe֨leke֙ veyo'atza֣yv veshsara֔yv vekal-yishsera'e֖l hanּimetza'iֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and I weighed out to them the offering of silver and gold and the articles that the king, his counsellors, his officials and all Israel present there had contributed for the house of our God.

ואשקולה וָאֶשְׁקֳלָ֣ה לָהֶ֔ם אֶת־הַכֶּ֥סֶף וְאֶת־הַזָּהָ֖ב וְאֶת־הַכֵּלִ֑ים תְּרוּמַ֣ת בֵּית־אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ הַהֵרִ֨ימוּ֙ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ וְיֹעֲצָ֣יו וְשָׂרָ֔יו וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַנִּמְצָאִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'eshsheqala֨h 'al-yada֜m kּe֗sep kּikּariym֙ shsheֽshsh-me'֣ot vachamishshּi֔ym ukeley-ke֥sep me'a֖h lekikּari֑ym zaha֖b me'a֥h kikּaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I weighed out to them: 650 talents of silver, silver articles weighing 100 talents, 100 talents of gold,

וָאֶשְׁקֲלָ֨ה עַל־יָדָ֜ם כֶּ֗סֶף כִּכָּרִים֙ שֵֽׁשׁ־מֵא֣וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֔ים וּכְלֵי־כֶ֥סֶף מֵאָ֖ה לְכִכָּרִ֑ים זָהָ֖ב מֵאָ֥ה כִכָּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ukepore֤y zahab֙ 'eshseri֔ym la'adarekoni֖ym 'a֑lep ukele֨y necho֜shshet mutzeha֤b tobah֙ shshena֔yim chamudo֖t kּazּahaֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)20 bowls of gold valued at 1,000 darics, and two articles of fine polished bronze, as precious as gold.

וּכְפֹרֵ֤י זָהָב֙ עֶשְׂרִ֔ים לַאֲדַרְכֹנִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף וּכְלֵ֨י נְחֹ֜שֶׁת מֻצְהָ֤ב טוֹבָה֙ שְׁנַ֔יִם חֲמוּדֹ֖ת כַּזָּהָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'omera֣h 'alehe֗m 'atּe֥m qo֨deshsh֙ layhva֔h vehakּeli֖ym qo֑deshsh vehakּe֤sep vehazּahab֙ nedaba֔h layhva֖h 'elohe֥y 'aboteykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I said to them, "You as well as these articles are consecrated to the LORD. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the LORD, the God of your ancestors.

וָאֹמְרָ֣ה אֲלֵהֶ֗ם אַתֶּ֥ם קֹ֨דֶשׁ֙ לַיהוָ֔ה וְהַכֵּלִ֖ים קֹ֑דֶשׁ וְהַכֶּ֤סֶף וְהַזָּהָב֙ נְדָבָ֔ה לַיהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבֹתֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshiqed֣u veshshimer֗u 'aֽd-tּishsheqel֡u lipeney֩ shsare֨y hakּohani֧ym vehaleviyּi֛m veshsareֽy-ha'ab֥ot leyishsera'e֖l bּiyrushshala֑im halּishshek֖ot bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Guard them carefully until you weigh them out in the chambers of the house of the LORD in Jerusalem before the leading priests and the Levites and the family heads of Israel."

שִׁקְד֣וּ וְשִׁמְר֗וּ עַֽד־תִּשְׁקְל֡וּ לִפְנֵי֩ שָׂרֵ֨י הַכֹּהֲנִ֧ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֛ם וְשָׂרֵֽי־הָאָב֥וֹת לְיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בִּירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם הַלִּשְׁכ֖וֹת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veqibּelu֙ hakּohani֣ym vehaleviyּi֔m mishsheqa֛l hakּe֥sep vehazּaha֖b vehakּeli֑ym lehabi֥y liyrushshala֖im lebe֥yt 'eloheֽynu׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the priests and Levites received the silver and gold and sacred articles that had been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.

וְקִבְּלוּ֙ הַכֹּהֲנִ֣ים וְהַלְוִיִּ֔ם מִשְׁקַ֛ל הַכֶּ֥סֶף וְהַזָּהָ֖ב וְהַכֵּלִ֑ים לְהָבִ֥יא לִירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם לְבֵ֥ית אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽnּise'a֞h minּeha֣r 'ֽahava֗ bּishshene֤ym 'ashsar֙ lacho֣deshsh hari'shsh֔on lale֖ket yerushshala֑im veyad-'elohe֨ynu֙ hayeta֣h 'ale֔ynu vayּa֨tzּiyle֔nu mikּa֥p 'oye֛b ve'ore֖b 'al-hadּaֽreke׃

Edified Edition (EDE)On the twelfth day of the first month we set out from the Ahava Canal to go to Jerusalem. The hand of our God was on us, and he protected us from enemies and bandits along the way.

וַֽנִּסְעָ֞ה מִנְּהַ֣ר אַֽהֲוָ֗א בִּשְׁנֵ֤ים עָשָׂר֙ לַחֹ֣דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן לָלֶ֖כֶת יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְיַד־אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ֙ הָיְתָ֣ה עָלֵ֔ינוּ וַיַּ֨צִּילֵ֔נוּ מִכַּ֥ף אוֹיֵ֛ב וְאוֹרֵ֖ב עַל־הַדָּֽרֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּab֖o yerushshala֑im vanּe֥shsheb shsha֖m yami֥ym shsheloshshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So we arrived in Jerusalem, where we rested three days.

וַנָּב֖וֹא יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַנֵּ֥שֶׁב שָׁ֖ם יָמִ֥ים שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubayּ֣om harebiy'i֡y nishsheqa֣l hakּesep֩ vehazּaha֨b vehakּeli֜ym bּebe֣yt 'elohe֗ynu 'a֠l yad-merem֤ot bּen-'ֽuriyּah֙ hakּohe֔n ve'imּ֖o 'ele'aza֣r bּen-pּiֽynecha֑s ve'imּahe֞m yozaba֧d bּen-yeshsh֛u'a venֽo'adeya֥h ben-bּinּ֖uy haleviyּiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)On the fourth day, in the house of our God, we weighed out the silver and gold and the sacred articles into the hands of Meremoth son of Uriah the priest. Eleazar son of Phinehas was with him, and so were the Levites Jozabad son of Jeshua and Noadiah son of Binnui.

וּבַיּ֣וֹם הָרְבִיעִ֡י נִשְׁקַ֣ל הַכֶּסֶף֩ וְהַזָּהָ֨ב וְהַכֵּלִ֜ים בְּבֵ֣ית אֱלֹהֵ֗ינוּ עַ֠ל יַד־מְרֵמ֤וֹת בֶּן־אֽוּרִיָּה֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְעִמּ֖וֹ אֶלְעָזָ֣ר בֶּן־פִּֽינְחָ֑ס וְעִמָּהֶ֞ם יוֹזָבָ֧ד בֶּן־יֵשׁ֛וּעַ וְנֽוֹעַדְיָ֥ה בֶן־בִּנּ֖וּי הַלְוִיִּֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּemisepּa֥r bּemishsheqa֖l lakּo֑l vayּikּate֥b kּaֽl-hamּishsheqa֖l bּa'e֥t hahiֽy'׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Everything was accounted for by number and weight, and the entire weight was recorded at that time.

בְּמִסְפָּ֥ר בְּמִשְׁקָ֖ל לַכֹּ֑ל וַיִּכָּתֵ֥ב כָּֽל־הַמִּשְׁקָ֖ל בָּעֵ֥ת הַהִֽיא׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֠bּa'iym meֽhashshּebi֨y beneֽy-hagּola֜h hiqeri֥ybu 'ol֣ot ׀ le'lohe֣y yishsera'e֗l pּari֨ym shsheneym-'ashsa֤r 'al-kּal-yishsera'el֙ 'eyli֣ym ׀ tּishshe'i֣ym veshshishshּa֗h kּebashsiym֙ shshibe'i֣ym veshshibe'a֔h tzepiyre֥y chatּa֖'t shshene֣ym 'ashsa֑r hakּo֖l 'ola֥h layhvaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 male lambs and, as a sin offering, 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.

הַ֠בָּאִים מֵֽהַשְּׁבִ֨י בְנֵֽי־הַגּוֹלָ֜ה הִקְרִ֥יבוּ עֹל֣וֹת ׀ לֵאלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל פָּרִ֨ים שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֤ר עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֵילִ֣ים ׀ תִּשְׁעִ֣ים וְשִׁשָּׁ֗ה כְּבָשִׂים֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים וְשִׁבְעָ֔ה צְפִירֵ֥י חַטָּ֖את שְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂ֑ר הַכֹּ֖ל עוֹלָ֥ה לַיהוָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּitּen֣u ׀ 'et-dּate֣y hamּe֗leke la'achashshedּarepּeney֙ hamּe֔leke upachav֖ot 'e֣ber hanּaha֑r venishsּe'֥u 'et-ha'a֖m ve'et-bּeֽyt-ha'elohiֽym׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)They also delivered the king’s orders to the royal satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who then gave assistance to the people and to the house of God.

וַֽיִּתְּנ֣וּ ׀ אֶת־דָּתֵ֣י הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ לַאֲחַשְׁדַּרְפְּנֵי֙ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וּפַחֲו֖וֹת עֵ֣בֶר הַנָּהָ֑ר וְנִשְּׂא֥וּ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם וְאֶת־בֵּֽית־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃ס
