Chapter 11
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehi֥y kal-ha'a֖retz shsapa֣h 'echa֑t udebari֖ym 'achadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And it was that all the earth was of one lip and one language.

וַֽיְהִ֥י כָל־הָאָ֖רֶץ שָׂפָ֣ה אֶחָ֑ת וּדְבָרִ֖ים אֲחָדִֽים׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehi֖y bּenase'a֣m miqּe֑dem vֽayּimetze'֥u biqe'a֛h bּe'e֥retz shshine'a֖r vayּe֥shshebu shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

וַֽיְהִ֖י בְּנָסְעָ֣ם מִקֶּ֑דֶם וַֽיִּמְצְא֥וּ בִקְעָ֛ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ שִׁנְעָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֞u 'i֣yshsh 'el-re'e֗hu ha֚bah nilebּena֣h lebeni֔ym venishserepa֖h lishserepa֑h vatּehi֨y lahe֤m halּebenah֙ le'a֔ben veha֣chema֔r haya֥h lahe֖m lachoֽmer׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They said to each other, "Come, let us build bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and bitumen for mortar.

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל־רֵעֵ֗הוּ הָ֚בָה נִלְבְּנָ֣ה לְבֵנִ֔ים וְנִשְׂרְפָ֖ה לִשְׂרֵפָ֑ה וַתְּהִ֨י לָהֶ֤ם הַלְּבֵנָה֙ לְאָ֔בֶן וְהַ֣חֵמָ֔ר הָיָ֥ה לָהֶ֖ם לַחֹֽמֶר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֞u ha֣bah ׀ nibeneh-lּa֣nu 'i֗yr umigedּal֙ vero'shsh֣o bashshּama֔yim venaֽ'ashseh-lּa֖nu shshe֑m pּen-nap֖utz 'al-pּene֥y kal-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower with its top in the heavens, so that we may make for ourselves a name (Shem); otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ הָ֣בָה ׀ נִבְנֶה־לָּ֣נוּ עִ֗יר וּמִגְדָּל֙ וְרֹאשׁ֣וֹ בַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנַֽעֲשֶׂה־לָּ֖נוּ שֵׁ֑ם פֶּן־נָפ֖וּץ עַל־פְּנֵ֥י כָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣red yehva֔h lire'o֥t 'et-ha'i֖yr ve'et-hamּigedּa֑l 'ashshe֥r bּan֖u bּene֥y ha'adaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the children of man were building.

וַיֵּ֣רֶד יְהוָ֔ה לִרְאֹ֥ת אֶת־הָעִ֖יר וְאֶת־הַמִּגְדָּ֑ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנ֖וּ בְּנֵ֥י הָאָדָֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehva֗h he֣n 'a֤m 'echad֙ veshsapa֤h 'achat֙ lekulּa֔m veze֖h hachilּa֣m la'ashs֑ot ve'atּah֙ loֽ'-yibּatze֣r mehe֔m kּo֛l 'ashshe֥r yazem֖u lֽa'ashsֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said, "Behold, they are one people and they have all one lip; and this is only the beginning of what they will do. Now nothing they propose to do will be withheld from them.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוָ֗ה הֵ֣ן עַ֤ם אֶחָד֙ וְשָׂפָ֤ה אַחַת֙ לְכֻלָּ֔ם וְזֶ֖ה הַחִלָּ֣ם לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת וְעַתָּה֙ לֹֽא־יִבָּצֵ֣ר מֵהֶ֔ם כֹּ֛ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר יָזְמ֖וּ לַֽעֲשֽׂוֹת׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ha֚bah nֽereda֔h venabela֥h shsha֖m shsepata֑m 'ashsher֙ lo֣ yishsheme'֔u 'i֖yshsh shsepa֥t re'eֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Come, let us go down and there confuse their language so they will not understand each other's lip."

הָ֚בָה נֵֽרְדָ֔ה וְנָבְלָ֥ה שָׁ֖ם שְׂפָתָ֑ם אֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א יִשְׁמְע֔וּ אִ֖ישׁ שְׂפַ֥ת רֵעֵֽהוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨petz yehva֥h 'ota֛m mishshּa֖m 'al-pּene֣y kal-ha'a֑retz vֽayּachedּel֖u libeno֥t ha'iֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of the whole earth, and they stopped building the city.

וַיָּ֨פֶץ יְהוָ֥ה אֹתָ֛ם מִשָּׁ֖ם עַל־פְּנֵ֣י כָל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וַֽיַּחְדְּל֖וּ לִבְנֹ֥ת הָעִֽיר׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֞n qara֤ shshemahּ֙ bּabe֔l kּiy-shsha֛m bּala֥l yehva֖h shsepa֣t kּal-ha'a֑retz umishshּam֙ hepiytza֣m yehva֔h 'al-pּene֖y kּal-ha'aֽretz׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)That is why it was called Babel, for there the LORD confused (balal) the lip of the whole earth. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

עַל־כֵּ֞ן קָרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ בָּבֶ֔ל כִּי־שָׁ֛ם בָּלַ֥ל יְהוָ֖ה שְׂפַ֣ת כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וּמִשָּׁם֙ הֱפִיצָ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה עַל־פְּנֵ֖י כָּל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֚lּeh tּoledo֣t shshe֔m shshe֚m bּen-me'a֣t shshana֔h vayּ֖oled 'et-'arepּakeshsha֑d shshenata֖yim 'acha֥r hamּabּֽul׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is the account of the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old when he became the father of Arphaxad, two years after the flood.

אֵ֚לֶּה תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת שֵׁ֔ם שֵׁ֚ם בֶּן־מְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֔ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־אַרְפַּכְשָׁ֑ד שְׁנָתַ֖יִם אַחַ֥ר הַמַּבּֽוּל׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechiy-shshe֗m 'ֽacharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-'arepּakeshsha֔d chame֥shsh me'֖ot shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years and had other sons and daughters.

וַֽיְחִי־שֵׁ֗ם אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־אַרְפַּכְשָׁ֔ד חֲמֵ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'arepּakeshsha֣d cha֔y chame֥shsh ushsheloshshi֖ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-shshaֽlach׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Arphaxad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Shelah.

וְאַרְפַּכְשַׁ֣ד חַ֔י חָמֵ֥שׁ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־שָֽׁלַח׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechi֣y 'arepּakeshsha֗d 'ֽacharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-shshe֔lach shshalo֣shsh shshani֔ym ve'arebּa֥ me'֖ot shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years and had other sons and daughters.

וַֽיְחִ֣י אַרְפַּכְשַׁ֗ד אַֽחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־שֶׁ֔לַח שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshe֥lach cha֖y shsheloshshi֣ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-'eֽber׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.

וְשֶׁ֥לַח חַ֖י שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־עֵֽבֶר׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechiy-shshe֗lach 'acharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-'e֔ber shshalo֣shsh shshani֔ym ve'arebּa֥ me'֖ot shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived four hundred and three years and had other sons and daughters.

וַֽיְחִי־שֶׁ֗לַח אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־עֵ֔בֶר שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyechiy-'e֕ber 'arebּa֥ ushsheloshshi֖ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-pּaֽleg׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.

וַֽיְחִי־עֵ֕בֶר אַרְבַּ֥ע וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־פָּֽלֶג׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyechiy-'e֗ber 'acharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-pּe֔leg shsheloshshi֣ym shshana֔h ve'arebּa֥ me'֖ot shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years and had other sons and daughters.

וַֽיְחִי־עֵ֗בֶר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־פֶּ֔לֶג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וְאַרְבַּ֥ע מֵא֖וֹת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechiy-pe֖leg shsheloshshi֣ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-re'ֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.

וַֽיְחִי־פֶ֖לֶג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־רְעֽוּ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechiy-pe֗leg 'acharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-re'֔u tּe֥shsha shshani֖ym uma'ta֣yim shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years and had other sons and daughters.

וַֽיְחִי־פֶ֗לֶג אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־רְע֔וּ תֵּ֥שַׁע שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֣y re'֔u shshetּa֥yim ushsheloshshi֖ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-shserֽug׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.

וַיְחִ֣י רְע֔וּ שְׁתַּ֥יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־שְׂרֽוּג׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֣y re'֗u 'acharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-shser֔ug shshe֥ba shshani֖ym uma'ta֣yim shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years and had other sons and daughters.

וַיְחִ֣י רְע֗וּ אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־שְׂר֔וּג שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֥y shser֖ug shsheloshshi֣ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-nachֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.

וַיְחִ֥י שְׂר֖וּג שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־נָחֽוֹר׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֣y shser֗ug 'achare֛y holiyd֥o 'et-nach֖or ma'ta֣yim shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years and had other sons and daughters.

וַיְחִ֣י שְׂר֗וּג אַחֲרֵ֛י הוֹלִיד֥וֹ אֶת־נָח֖וֹר מָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֣y nach֔or tּe֥shsha ve'eshseri֖ym shshana֑h vayּ֖oled 'et-tּaֽrach׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.

וַיְחִ֣י נָח֔וֹר תֵּ֥שַׁע וְעֶשְׂרִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֖וֹלֶד אֶת־תָּֽרַח׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechi֣y nach֗or 'acharey֙ holiyd֣o 'et-tּe֔rach tּeshshaֽ'-'eshsere֥h shshana֖h ume'a֣t shshana֑h vayּ֥oled bּani֖ym ubanֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years and had other sons and daughters.

וַיְחִ֣י נָח֗וֹר אַחֲרֵי֙ הוֹלִיד֣וֹ אֶת־תֶּ֔רַח תְּשַֽׁע־עֶשְׂרֵ֥ה שָׁנָ֖ה וּמְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֥וֹלֶד בָּנִ֖ים וּבָנֽוֹת׃ס

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayechiy-te֖rach shshibe'i֣ym shshana֑h vayּ֨oled֙ 'et-'abera֔m 'et-nach֖or ve'et-haraֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.

וַֽיְחִי־תֶ֖רַח שִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיּ֨וֹלֶד֙ אֶת־אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־הָרָֽן׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh֙ tּoledo֣t tּe֔rach tּe֚rach holi֣yd 'et-'abera֔m 'et-nach֖or ve'et-hara֑n vehara֖n holi֥yd 'et-lֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is the account of the generations of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.

וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ תּוֹלְדֹ֣ת תֶּ֔רַח תֶּ֚רַח הוֹלִ֣יד אֶת־אַבְרָ֔ם אֶת־נָח֖וֹר וְאֶת־הָרָ֑ן וְהָרָ֖ן הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־לֽוֹט׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣mat hara֔n 'al-pּene֖y tּe֣rach 'abi֑yv bּe'e֥retz moladetּ֖o bּe'֥ur kּashsedּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.

וַיָּ֣מָת הָרָ֔ן עַל־פְּנֵ֖י תֶּ֣רַח אָבִ֑יו בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מוֹלַדְתּ֖וֹ בְּא֥וּר כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch 'abera֧m venach֛or lahe֖m nashshi֑ym shshe֤m 'eֽshshet-'aberam֙ shsara֔y veshshe֤m 'eֽshshet-nachor֙ milekּa֔h bּat-hara֥n 'abiֽy-milekּa֖h vֽa'abi֥y yisekּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָ֧ם וְנָח֛וֹר לָהֶ֖ם נָשִׁ֑ים שֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־אַבְרָם֙ שָׂרָ֔י וְשֵׁ֤ם אֵֽשֶׁת־נָחוֹר֙ מִלְכָּ֔ה בַּת־הָרָ֥ן אֲבִֽי־מִלְכָּ֖ה וַֽאֲבִ֥י יִסְכָּֽה׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֥y shsara֖y 'aqara֑h 'e֥yn la֖hּ valaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

וַתְּהִ֥י שָׂרַ֖י עֲקָרָ֑ה אֵ֥ין לָ֖הּ וָלָֽד׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch tּe֜rach 'et-'abera֣m bּen֗o ve'et-l֤ot bּen-haran֙ bּen-bּen֔o ve'et֙ shsara֣y kּalּat֔o 'e֖shshet 'abera֣m bּen֑o vayּetze'֨u 'itּa֜m me'֣ur kּashsedּi֗ym lale֨ket֙ 'a֣retzah kּena֔'an vayּabo֥'u 'ad-chara֖n vayּe֥shshebu shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח תֶּ֜רַח אֶת־אַבְרָ֣ם בְּנ֗וֹ וְאֶת־ל֤וֹט בֶּן־הָרָן֙ בֶּן־בְּנ֔וֹ וְאֵת֙ שָׂרַ֣י כַּלָּת֔וֹ אֵ֖שֶׁת אַבְרָ֣ם בְּנ֑וֹ וַיֵּצְא֨וּ אִתָּ֜ם מֵא֣וּר כַּשְׂדִּ֗ים לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ אַ֣רְצָה כְּנַ֔עַן וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ עַד־חָרָ֖ן וַיֵּ֥שְׁבוּ שָֽׁם׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּihey֣u yemey-te֔rach chame֥shsh shshani֖ym uma'ta֣yim shshana֑h vayּa֥mat tּe֖rach bּecharaֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Terah lived two hundred and five years, and he died in Harran.

וַיִּהְי֣וּ יְמֵי־תֶ֔רַח חָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים וּמָאתַ֣יִם שָׁנָ֑ה וַיָּ֥מָת תֶּ֖רַח בְּחָרָֽן׃ס
