Chapter 12
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-'abera֔m leke-leka֛ me'aretzeka֥ umimּֽoladetּeka֖ umibּe֣yt 'abi֑yka 'el-ha'a֖retz 'ashshe֥r 'are'eֽkּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD had said to Abram, "Go forth for yourself (Lech lecha) from your country, and from your relatives, and from your father's house, to the land I will show you.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם לֶךְ־לְךָ֛ מֵאַרְצְךָ֥ וּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ וּמִבֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ אֶל־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַרְאֶֽךָּ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'eֽ'eshseka֙ leg֣oy gּad֔ol va'aba֣rekeka֔ va'agadּela֖h shsheme֑ka veheye֖h bּerakaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name (Shem) great, and you will be a blessing.

וְאֶֽעֶשְׂךָ֙ לְג֣וֹי גָּד֔וֹל וַאֲבָ֣רֶכְךָ֔ וַאֲגַדְּלָ֖ה שְׁמֶ֑ךָ וֶהְיֵ֖ה בְּרָכָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abaֽrakah֙ meba֣reke֔yka umeqalּeleka֖ 'a'o֑r veniberek֣u beka֔ kּo֖l mishshepּecho֥t ha'adamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the ground (Adama) shall be blessed."

וַאֲבָֽרֲכָה֙ מְבָ֣רְכֶ֔יךָ וּמְקַלֶּלְךָ֖ אָאֹ֑ר וְנִבְרְכ֣וּ בְךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל מִשְׁפְּחֹ֥ת הָאֲדָמָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke 'abera֗m kּa'ashshe֨r dּibּe֤r 'elayv֙ yehva֔h vayּe֥leke 'itּ֖o l֑ot ve'abera֗m bּen-chame֤shsh shshaniym֙ veshshibe'i֣ym shshana֔h bּetze't֖o mecharaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abram went forth, as the LORD had spoken to him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Harran.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ אַבְרָ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אִתּ֖וֹ ל֑וֹט וְאַבְרָ֗ם בֶּן־חָמֵ֤שׁ שָׁנִים֙ וְשִׁבְעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה בְּצֵאת֖וֹ מֵחָרָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch 'aberam֩ 'et-shsara֨y 'ishshetּ֜o ve'et-l֣ot bּen-'achi֗yv ve'et-kּal-rekushsham֙ 'ashshe֣r raka֔shshu ve'et-hanּe֖peshsh 'ashsher-'ashs֣u bechara֑n vayּetze'֗u lale֨ket֙ 'a֣retzah kּena֔'an vayּabo֖'u 'a֥retzah kּenaֽ'an׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan; and they entered the land of Canaan.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אַבְרָם֩ אֶת־שָׂרַ֨י אִשְׁתּ֜וֹ וְאֶת־ל֣וֹט בֶּן־אָחִ֗יו וְאֶת־כָּל־רְכוּשָׁם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר רָכָ֔שׁוּ וְאֶת־הַנֶּ֖פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר־עָשׂ֣וּ בְחָרָ֑ן וַיֵּצְא֗וּ לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ אַ֣רְצָה כְּנַ֔עַן וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָה כְּנָֽעַן׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'abo֤r 'aberam֙ bּa'a֔retz 'a֚d meq֣om shsheke֔m 'a֖d 'el֣on more֑h vehֽakּena'ani֖y 'a֥z bּa'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abram traveled through the land as far as the place of Shechem, to the great tree of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.

וַיַּעֲבֹ֤ר אַבְרָם֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ עַ֚ד מְק֣וֹם שְׁכֶ֔ם עַ֖ד אֵל֣וֹן מוֹרֶ֑ה וְהַֽכְּנַעֲנִ֖י אָ֥ז בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּera֤ yehvah֙ 'el-'abera֔m vayּo֕'mer leza֨re'aka֔ 'etּe֖n 'et-ha'a֣retz hazּo֑'t vayּi֤ben shsham֙ mizebּe֔cha layhva֖h hanּire'e֥h 'elaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your seed I will give this land." So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

וַיֵּרָ֤א יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לְזַ֨רְעֲךָ֔ אֶתֵּ֖ן אֶת־הָאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֑את וַיִּ֤בֶן שָׁם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לַיהוָ֖ה הַנִּרְאֶ֥ה אֵלָֽיו׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'etּe֨q mishshּa֜m haha֗rah miqּe֛dem lebeֽyt-'e֖l vayּe֣t 'aholo֑h bּeֽyt-'e֤l miyּam֙ veha'a֣y miqּe֔dem vayּiֽben-shsha֤m mizebּe֨cha֙ lֽayhva֔h vayּiqera֖ bּeshshe֥m yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)From there he moved on to the hills east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and called on the name of the LORD.

וַיַּעְתֵּ֨ק מִשָּׁ֜ם הָהָ֗רָה מִקֶּ֛דֶם לְבֵֽית־אֵ֖ל וַיֵּ֣ט אָהֳלֹ֑ה בֵּֽית־אֵ֤ל מִיָּם֙ וְהָעַ֣י מִקֶּ֔דֶם וַיִּֽבֶן־שָׁ֤ם מִזְבֵּ֨חַ֙ לַֽיהוָ֔ה וַיִּקְרָ֖א בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּa֣ 'abera֔m hal֥oke venas֖o'a hanּeֽgebּah׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abram journeyed, going on and on toward the Negev.

וַיִּסַּ֣ע אַבְרָ֔ם הָל֥וֹךְ וְנָס֖וֹעַ הַנֶּֽגְבָּה׃פ

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y ra'a֖b bּa'a֑retz vayּe֨red 'abera֤m mitzera֨yemah֙ lag֣ur shsha֔m kּiֽy-kabe֥d hara'a֖b bּa'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.

וַיְהִ֥י רָעָ֖ב בָּאָ֑רֶץ וַיֵּ֨רֶד אַבְרָ֤ם מִצְרַ֨יְמָה֙ לָג֣וּר שָׁ֔ם כִּֽי־כָבֵ֥ד הָרָעָ֖ב בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּa'ashshe֥r hiqeri֖yb lab֣o mitzera֑yemah vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-shsara֣y 'ishshetּ֔o hinּeh-na֣ yada֔'etּiy kּi֛y 'ishshּa֥h yepat-mare'e֖h 'aֽtּe׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "Behold now, I know that you are a woman fair of appearance.

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הִקְרִ֖יב לָב֣וֹא מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־שָׂרַ֣י אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ הִנֵּה־נָ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אִשָּׁ֥ה יְפַת־מַרְאֶ֖ה אָֽתְּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h kּiֽy-yire'֤u 'otake֙ hamּitzeri֔ym ve'amer֖u 'ishshetּ֣o zo֑'t vehareg֥u 'oti֖y ve'ota֥ke yechayּֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will let you live.

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יִרְא֤וּ אֹתָךְ֙ הַמִּצְרִ֔ים וְאָמְר֖וּ אִשְׁתּ֣וֹ זֹ֑את וְהָרְג֥וּ אֹתִ֖י וְאֹתָ֥ךְ יְחַיּֽוּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): imeriy-na֖ 'acho֣tiy 'a֑tּe lema֨'an֙ yiֽytab-li֣y ba'abure֔ke vechayeta֥h napeshshi֖y bּigelaleֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Say you are my sister, so that it will go well with me for your sake and my soul will live because of you."

אִמְרִי־נָ֖א אֲחֹ֣תִי אָ֑תְּ לְמַ֨עַן֙ יִֽיטַב־לִ֣י בַעֲבוּרֵ֔ךְ וְחָיְתָ֥ה נַפְשִׁ֖י בִּגְלָלֵֽךְ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּeb֥o 'abera֖m mitzera֑yemah vayּire'֤u hamּitzeriym֙ 'et-ha֣'ishshּa֔h kּiֽy-yapa֥h hi֖v me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very fair.

וַיְהִ֕י כְּב֥וֹא אַבְרָ֖ם מִצְרָ֑יְמָה וַיִּרְא֤וּ הַמִּצְרִים֙ אֶת־הָ֣אִשָּׁ֔ה כִּֽי־יָפָ֥ה הִ֖וא מְאֹֽד׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֤u 'otahּ֙ shsare֣y pare'o֔h vayehaֽlel֥u 'ota֖hּ 'el-pּare'o֑h vatּuqּa֥ch ha'ishshּa֖h bּe֥yt pּare'oֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Pharaoh's officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

וַיִּרְא֤וּ אֹתָהּ֙ שָׂרֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וַיְהַֽלְל֥וּ אֹתָ֖הּ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וַתֻּקַּ֥ח הָאִשָּׁ֖ה בֵּ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ule'abera֥m heyti֖yb bּa'abura֑hּ vֽayehiy-l֤o tzo'n-ubaqar֙ vachamori֔ym va'abadiym֙ ushshepacho֔t va'atono֖t ugemalּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.

וּלְאַבְרָ֥ם הֵיטִ֖יב בַּעֲבוּרָ֑הּ וַֽיְהִי־ל֤וֹ צֹאן־וּבָקָר֙ וַחֲמֹרִ֔ים וַעֲבָדִים֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וַאֲתֹנֹ֖ת וּגְמַלִּֽים׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayenagּa֨ yehva֧h ׀ 'et-pּare'o֛h nega'i֥ym gּedoli֖ym ve'et-bּeyt֑o 'al-dּeba֥r shsara֖y 'e֥shshet 'aberaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD struck Pharaoh and his house with serious plagues because of Abram's wife Sarai.

וַיְנַגַּ֨ע יְהוָ֧ה ׀ אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֛ה נְגָעִ֥ים גְּדֹלִ֖ים וְאֶת־בֵּית֑וֹ עַל־דְּבַ֥ר שָׂרַ֖י אֵ֥שֶׁת אַבְרָֽם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ pare'oh֙ le'abera֔m vayּo֕'mer mah-zּo֖'t 'ashsi֣yta lּi֑y la֚mּah lo'-higּa֣detּa lּi֔y kּi֥y 'ishshetּeka֖ hiֽv'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Pharaoh summoned Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?

וַיִּקְרָ֤א פַרְעֹה֙ לְאַבְרָ֔ם וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מַה־זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לִּ֑י לָ֚מָּה לֹא־הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֔י כִּ֥י אִשְׁתְּךָ֖ הִֽוא׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): lama֤h 'ama֨retּa֙ 'acho֣tiy hi֔v va'eqּa֥ch 'ota֛hּ li֖y le'ishshּa֑h ve'atּa֕h hinּe֥h 'ishshetּeka֖ qa֥ch valeֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!"

לָמָ֤ה אָמַ֨רְתָּ֙ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֔וא וָאֶקַּ֥ח אֹתָ֛הּ לִ֖י לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וְעַתָּ֕ה הִנֵּ֥ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֖ קַ֥ח וָלֵֽךְ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֥v 'ala֛yv pּare'o֖h 'anashshi֑ym vֽayeshshalּech֥u 'ot֛o ve'et-'ishshetּ֖o ve'et-kּal-'ashsher-lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

וַיְצַ֥ו עָלָ֛יו פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֲנָשִׁ֑ים וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֥וּ אֹת֛וֹ וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־לֽוֹ׃
