Chapter 17

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y 'abera֔m bּen-tּishshe'i֥ym shshana֖h vete֣shsha shshani֑ym vayּera֨ yehva֜h 'el-'abera֗m vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ 'aniy-'e֣l shshadּa֔y hitehalּe֥ke lepana֖y veheye֥h tamiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am El Shaddai; walk before Me and be whole (tamim).

וַיְהִ֣י אַבְרָ֔ם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְתֵ֣שַׁע שָׁנִ֑ים וַיֵּרָ֨א יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־אַבְרָ֗ם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ אֲנִי־אֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֔י הִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לְפָנַ֖י וֶהְיֵ֥ה תָמִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'etּena֥h beriyti֖y bּeyni֣y ubeyne֑ka ve'arebּe֥h 'oteka֖ bּime'o֥d me'oֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will multiply you exceedingly."

וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה בְרִיתִ֖י בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ וְאַרְבֶּ֥ה אוֹתְךָ֖ בִּמְאֹ֥ד מְאֹֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּo֥l 'abera֖m 'al-pּana֑yv vayedabּe֥r 'itּ֛o 'elohi֖ym le'moֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abram fell on his face, and God said to him,

וַיִּפֹּ֥ל אַבְרָ֖ם עַל־פָּנָ֑יו וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתּ֛וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ani֕y hinּe֥h beriyti֖y 'itּa֑ke vehayi֕yta le'a֖b ham֥on gּoyiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE) "Behold, my covenant is with you: You will be the father of a multitude of nations.

אֲנִ֕י הִנֵּ֥ה בְרִיתִ֖י אִתָּ֑ךְ וְהָיִ֕יתָ לְאַ֖ב הֲמ֥וֹן גּוֹיִֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): velo'-yiqּare֥ '֛od 'et-shshimeka֖ 'abera֑m vehaya֤h shshimeka֙ 'aberaha֔m kּi֛y 'ab-ham֥on gּoyi֖m netatּiֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)No longer will your name be Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

וְלֹא־יִקָּרֵ֥א ע֛וֹד אֶת־שִׁמְךָ֖ אַבְרָ֑ם וְהָיָ֤ה שִׁמְךָ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם כִּ֛י אַב־הֲמ֥וֹן גּוֹיִ֖ם נְתַתִּֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehipereti֤y 'oֽteka֙ bּime'o֣d me'o֔d unetatּi֖yka legoyi֑m umelaki֖ym mimּeka֥ yetzeֽ'u׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I will make you extremely fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.

וְהִפְרֵתִ֤י אֹֽתְךָ֙ בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֔ד וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ לְגוֹיִ֑ם וּמְלָכִ֖ים מִמְּךָ֥ יֵצֵֽאוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vahaqimoti֨y 'et-bּeriyti֜y bּeyni֣y ubeyne֗ka ube֨yn zare'aka֧ 'achare֛yka ledorota֖m liberi֣yt 'ola֑m lihey֤ot leka֙ leֽ'lohi֔ym uֽlezare'aka֖ 'achareֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your offspring after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your offspring after you.

וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֜י בֵּינִ֣י וּבֵינֶ֗ךָ וּבֵ֨ין זַרְעֲךָ֧ אַחֲרֶ֛יךָ לְדֹרֹתָ֖ם לִבְרִ֣ית עוֹלָ֑ם לִהְי֤וֹת לְךָ֙ לֵֽאלֹהִ֔ים וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֖ אַחֲרֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): venatatּi֣y le֠ka ulezare'aka֨ 'achare֜yka 'e֣t ׀ 'e֣retz megure֗yka 'e֚t kּal-'e֣retz kּena֔'an la'achuzּa֖t 'ola֑m vehayi֥ytiy lahe֖m le'lohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your offspring after you; and I will be their God."

וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְ֠ךָ וּלְזַרְעֲךָ֨ אַחֲרֶ֜יךָ אֵ֣ת ׀ אֶ֣רֶץ מְגֻרֶ֗יךָ אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן לַאֲחֻזַּ֖ת עוֹלָ֑ם וְהָיִ֥יתִי לָהֶ֖ם לֵאלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elohiym֙ 'el-'aberaha֔m ve'atּa֖h 'et-bּeriyti֣y tishshemo֑r 'atּa֛h vezare'aka֥ 'ֽachare֖yka ledorotaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said to Abraham, "As for you, you must keep my covenant, you and your offspring after you for the generations to come.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֔ם וְאַתָּ֖ה אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֣י תִשְׁמֹ֑ר אַתָּ֛ה וְזַרְעֲךָ֥ אַֽחֲרֶ֖יךָ לְדֹרֹתָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): zo֣'t bּeriyti֞y 'ashshe֣r tּishshemer֗u bּeyniy֙ ube֣yneyke֔m ube֥yn zare'aka֖ 'achare֑yka himּ֥ol lake֖m kּal-zakaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is my covenant with you and your offspring after you, the covenant you are to keep: Every male among you shall be circumcised.

זֹ֣את בְּרִיתִ֞י אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּשְׁמְר֗וּ בֵּינִי֙ וּבֵ֣ינֵיכֶ֔ם וּבֵ֥ין זַרְעֲךָ֖ אַחֲרֶ֑יךָ הִמּ֥וֹל לָכֶ֖ם כָּל־זָכָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): unemaletּe֕m 'e֖t bּeshsa֣r 'arelateke֑m vehayah֙ le'֣ot bּeri֔yt bּeyni֖y ubeyneykeֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.

וּנְמַלְתֶּ֕ם אֵ֖ת בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלַתְכֶ֑ם וְהָיָה֙ לְא֣וֹת בְּרִ֔ית בֵּינִ֖י וּבֵינֵיכֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uben-shshemona֣t yami֗ym yimּ֥ol lake֛m kּal-zaka֖r ledoroteyke֑m yeli֣yd bּa֔yit umiqenat-kּe֨sep֙ mikּo֣l bּen-neka֔r 'ashshe֛r lo֥ miֽzּare'aka֖ hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)For the generations to come every male among you who is eight days old must be circumcised, including those born in your household or bought with money from a foreigner, those who are not your offspring.

וּבֶן־שְׁמֹנַ֣ת יָמִ֗ים יִמּ֥וֹל לָכֶ֛ם כָּל־זָכָ֖ר לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶ֑ם יְלִ֣יד בָּ֔יִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּ֨סֶף֙ מִכֹּ֣ל בֶּן־נֵכָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹ֥א מִֽזַּרְעֲךָ֖ הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): himּ֧ol ׀ yimּ֛ol yeli֥yd bּֽeyteka֖ umiqena֣t kּasepּe֑ka vehayeta֧h beriyti֛y bּibeshsareke֖m liberi֥yt 'olaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Whether born in your household or bought with your money, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh is to be an everlasting covenant.

הִמּ֧וֹל ׀ יִמּ֛וֹל יְלִ֥יד בֵּֽיתְךָ֖ וּמִקְנַ֣ת כַּסְפֶּ֑ךָ וְהָיְתָ֧ה בְרִיתִ֛י בִּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם לִבְרִ֥ית עוֹלָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'are֣l ׀ zaka֗r 'ashshe֤r loֽ'-yimּol֙ 'et-bּeshsa֣r 'arelat֔o venikereta֛h hanּe֥peshsh hahi֖v me'amּe֑yha 'et-bּeriyti֖y hepaֽr׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Any uncircumcised male, who has not been circumcised in the flesh, will be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."

וְעָרֵ֣ל ׀ זָכָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יִמּוֹל֙ אֶת־בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלָת֔וֹ וְנִכְרְתָ֛ה הַנֶּ֥פֶשׁ הַהִ֖וא מֵעַמֶּ֑יהָ אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י הֵפַֽר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elohiym֙ 'el-'aberaha֔m shsara֣y 'ishshetּeka֔ lo'-tiqera֥ 'et-shshema֖hּ shsara֑y kּi֥y shsara֖h shshemaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)God also said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you are no longer to call her Sarai; her name will be Sarah.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֔ם שָׂרַ֣י אִשְׁתְּךָ֔ לֹא־תִקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמָ֖הּ שָׂרָ֑י כִּ֥י שָׂרָ֖ה שְׁמָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uberaketּi֣y 'ota֔hּ vega֨m nata֧tּiy mimּe֛nּah leka֖ bּe֑n ubeֽraketּi֨yha֙ vehaֽyeta֣h legoyi֔m maleke֥y 'amּi֖ym mimּe֥nּah yiheyֽu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I will bless her and will surely give you a son by her. I will bless her so that she will be the mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her."

וּבֵרַכְתִּ֣י אֹתָ֔הּ וְגַ֨ם נָתַ֧תִּי מִמֶּ֛נָּה לְךָ֖ בֵּ֑ן וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֨יהָ֙ וְהָֽיְתָ֣ה לְגוֹיִ֔ם מַלְכֵ֥י עַמִּ֖ים מִמֶּ֥נָּה יִהְיֽוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipּo֧l 'aberaha֛m 'al-pּana֖yv vayּitzecha֑q vayּo֣'mer bּelibּ֗o halּebe֤n me'aֽh-shshanah֙ yiuale֔d ve'i֨m-shsara֔h habat-tּishshe'i֥ym shshana֖h tּeleֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?"

וַיִּפֹּ֧ל אַבְרָהָ֛ם עַל־פָּנָ֖יו וַיִּצְחָ֑ק וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בְּלִבּ֗וֹ הַלְּבֶ֤ן מֵאָֽה־שָׁנָה֙ יִוָּלֵ֔ד וְאִ֨ם־שָׂרָ֔ה הֲבַת־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה תֵּלֵֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'aberaha֖m 'el-hֽa'elohi֑ym l֥u yishshema'e֖'l yicheye֥h lepaneֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And Abraham said to God, "If only Ishmael might live before you!"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶל־הָֽאֱלֹהִ֑ים ל֥וּ יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל יִחְיֶ֥ה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'elohi֗ym 'abal֙ shsara֣h 'ishshetּeka֗ yole֤det leka֙ bּe֔n veqara֥'ta 'et-shshem֖o yitzecha֑q vahaqimoti֨y 'et-bּeriyti֥y 'itּ֛o liberi֥yt 'ola֖m lezare'֥o 'acharaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said, "Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac (He Laughs). I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֗ים אֲבָל֙ שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֗ יֹלֶ֤דֶת לְךָ֙ בֵּ֔ן וְקָרָ֥אתָ אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יִצְחָ֑ק וַהֲקִמֹתִ֨י אֶת־בְּרִיתִ֥י אִתּ֛וֹ לִבְרִ֥ית עוֹלָ֖ם לְזַרְע֥וֹ אַחֲרָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uֽleyishshema'e֘'l shshema'etּiyka֒ hinּe֣h ׀ bּera֣ketּiy 'ot֗o vehipereyti֥y 'ot֛o vehirebּeyti֥y 'ot֖o bּime'o֣d me'o֑d shsheneym-'ashsa֤r neshsiy'im֙ yoli֔yd unetatּi֖yv leg֥oy gּadֽol׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And as for Ishmael, I have heard you: I will surely bless him; I will make him fruitful and will greatly increase his numbers. He will be the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.

וּֽלְיִשְׁמָעֵ֘אל שְׁמַעְתִּיךָ֒ הִנֵּ֣ה ׀ בֵּרַ֣כְתִּי אֹת֗וֹ וְהִפְרֵיתִ֥י אֹת֛וֹ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֥י אֹת֖וֹ בִּמְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֤ר נְשִׂיאִם֙ יוֹלִ֔יד וּנְתַתִּ֖יו לְג֥וֹי גָּדֽוֹל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-bּeriyti֖y 'aqi֣ym 'et-yitzecha֑q 'ashsher֩ tּele֨d leka֤ shsarah֙ lamּo'e֣d hazּe֔h bּashshּana֖h ha'acheֽret׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you by this time next year."

וְאֶת־בְּרִיתִ֖י אָקִ֣ים אֶת־יִצְחָ֑ק אֲשֶׁר֩ תֵּלֵ֨ד לְךָ֤ שָׂרָה֙ לַמּוֹעֵ֣ד הַזֶּ֔ה בַּשָּׁנָ֖ה הָאַחֶֽרֶת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayeka֖l ledabּe֣r 'itּ֑o vayּa֣'al 'elohi֔ym me'a֖l 'aberahaֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When He had finished speaking with Abraham, God went up from him.

וַיְכַ֖ל לְדַבֵּ֣ר אִתּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֣עַל אֱלֹהִ֔ים מֵעַ֖ל אַבְרָהָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch 'aberaha֜m 'et-yishshema'e֣'l bּen֗o ve'e֨t kּal-yeliyde֤y beyto֙ ve'et֙ kּal-miqena֣t kּasepּ֔o kּal-zaka֕r bּe'aneshshe֖y bּe֣yt 'aberaha֑m vayּa֜mal 'et-bּeshsa֣r 'arelata֗m bּe'e֨tzem֙ hayּ֣om hazּe֔h kּa'ashshe֛r dּibּe֥r 'itּ֖o 'elohiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)On that day Abraham took his son Ishmael and all those born in his household or bought with his money, every male in his household, and circumcised them, as God told him.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בְּנ֗וֹ וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־יְלִידֵ֤י בֵיתוֹ֙ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־מִקְנַ֣ת כַּסְפּ֔וֹ כָּל־זָכָ֕ר בְּאַנְשֵׁ֖י בֵּ֣ית אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיָּ֜מָל אֶת־בְּשַׂ֣ר עָרְלָתָ֗ם בְּעֶ֨צֶם֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'a֨beraha֔m bּen-tּishshe'i֥ym vate֖shsha shshana֑h bּehimּol֖o bּeshsa֥r 'arelatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh,

וְאַ֨בְרָהָ֔ם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִ֥ים וָתֵ֖שַׁע שָׁנָ֑ה בְּהִמֹּל֖וֹ בְּשַׂ֥ר עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyishshema'e֣'l bּen֔o bּen-shshelo֥shsh 'eshsere֖h shshana֑h bּehi֨mּol֔o 'e֖t bּeshsa֥r 'arelatֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and his son Ishmael was thirteen;

וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֣אל בְּנ֔וֹ בֶּן־שְׁלֹ֥שׁ עֶשְׂרֵ֖ה שָׁנָ֑ה בְּהִ֨מֹּל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת בְּשַׂ֥ר עָרְלָתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe'e֨tzem֙ hayּ֣om hazּe֔h nimּ֖ol 'aberaha֑m veyishshema'e֖'l bּenֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on that very day.

בְּעֶ֨צֶם֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה נִמּ֖וֹל אַבְרָהָ֑ם וְיִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל בְּנֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-'aneshshe֤y beyto֙ yeli֣yd bּa֔yit umiqenat-kּe֖sep me'e֣t bּen-neka֑r nimּo֖lu 'itּֽo׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And every male in Abraham's household, including those born in his household or bought from a foreigner, was circumcised with him.

וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁ֤י בֵיתוֹ֙ יְלִ֣יד בָּ֔יִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּ֖סֶף מֵאֵ֣ת בֶּן־נֵכָ֑ר נִמֹּ֖לוּ אִתּֽוֹ׃פ
