Chapter 20
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּa֨ mishshּa֤m 'aberaham֙ 'a֣retzah hanּe֔geb vayּe֥shsheb bּeyn-qade֖shsh ube֣yn shsh֑ur vayּa֖gar bּigeraֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Abraham moved on from there into the region of the Negev and lived between Kadesh and Shur. For a while he stayed in Gerar,

וַיִּסַּ֨ע מִשָּׁ֤ם אַבְרָהָם֙ אַ֣רְצָה הַנֶּ֔גֶב וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בֵּין־קָדֵ֖שׁ וּבֵ֣ין שׁ֑וּר וַיָּ֖גָר בִּגְרָֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer 'aberaha֛m 'el-shsara֥h 'ishshetּ֖o 'acho֣tiy hi֑v vayּishshela֗ch 'abiyme֨leke֙ me֣leke gּera֔r vayּiqּa֖ch 'et-shsaraֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and there Abraham said of Sarah his wife, "She is my sister." Then Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֛ם אֶל־שָׂרָ֥ה אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ גְּרָ֔ר וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־שָׂרָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֧ 'elohi֛ym 'el-'abiyme֖leke bּachal֣om halּa֑yelah vayּo֣'mer l֗o hinּeka֥ met֙ 'al-ha'ishshּa֣h 'ashsher-laqa֔chetּa vehi֖v bּe'u֥lat bּaֽ'al׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But God came to Abimelech in a dream one night and said to him, "Behold, you are as a dead man because of the woman you have taken; she is a married woman."

וַיָּבֹ֧א אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶל־אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ בַּחֲל֣וֹם הַלָּ֑יְלָה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ הִנְּךָ֥ מֵת֙ עַל־הָאִשָּׁ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־לָקַ֔חְתָּ וְהִ֖וא בְּעֻ֥לַת בָּֽעַל׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abiyme֕leke lo֥ qara֖b 'ele֑yha vayּo'ma֕r 'adona֕y hag֥oy gּam-tzadּi֖yq tּaharoֽg׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Abimelech had not gone near her, so he said, "Lord, will you destroy even a righteous nation?

וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ לֹ֥א קָרַ֖ב אֵלֶ֑יהָ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֲדֹנָ֕י הֲג֥וֹי גַּם־צַדִּ֖יק תַּהֲרֹֽג׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): halo֨ h֤u 'aֽmar-liy֙ 'acho֣tiy hi֔v vehiֽy'-gam-hi֥v 'ֽamera֖h 'achi֣y h֑u bּetam-lebabi֛y ubeniqeyo֥n kּapּa֖y 'ashsi֥ytiy zoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Did he not say to me, 'She is my sister,' and didn't she also say, 'He is my brother'? In the integrity (tom) of my heart and the innocence of my hands have I done this."

הֲלֹ֨א ה֤וּא אָֽמַר־לִי֙ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֔וא וְהִֽיא־גַם־הִ֥וא אָֽמְרָ֖ה אָחִ֣י ה֑וּא בְּתָם־לְבָבִ֛י וּבְנִקְיֹ֥ן כַּפַּ֖י עָשִׂ֥יתִי זֹֽאת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ 'ela֨yv hֽa'elohi֜ym bּachalo֗m gּa֣m 'anoki֤y yada֨'etּiy֙ kּi֤y betam-lebabeka֙ 'ashsi֣yta zּo֔'t va'echeshso֧ke gּam-'anoki֛y 'ֽoteka֖ mechato-li֑y 'al-kּe֥n lo'-netatּi֖yka linegּo֥'a 'eleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said to him in the dream, "Yes, I know you did this in the integrity of your heart, and so I have kept you from sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֵלָ֨יו הָֽאֱלֹהִ֜ים בַּחֲלֹ֗ם גַּ֣ם אָנֹכִ֤י יָדַ֨עְתִּי֙ כִּ֤י בְתָם־לְבָבְךָ֙ עָשִׂ֣יתָ זֹּ֔את וָאֶחְשֹׂ֧ךְ גַּם־אָנֹכִ֛י אֽוֹתְךָ֖ מֵחֲטוֹ־לִ֑י עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יךָ לִנְגֹּ֥עַ אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h hashshe֤b 'eֽshshet-ha'iyshsh֙ kּiֽy-nabi֣y h֔u veyitepּalּe֥l bּֽa'adeka֖ veֽcheye֑h ve'im-'eֽyneka֣ meshshi֗yb dּa֚ kּiy-m֣ot tּam֔ut 'atּa֖h vekal-'ashsher-laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now return the man's wife, for he is a prophet (Navi), and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you will surely die, you and all who belong to you."

וְעַתָּ֗ה הָשֵׁ֤ב אֵֽשֶׁת־הָאִישׁ֙ כִּֽי־נָבִ֣יא ה֔וּא וְיִתְפַּלֵּ֥ל בַּֽעַדְךָ֖ וֶֽחְיֵ֑ה וְאִם־אֵֽינְךָ֣ מֵשִׁ֗יב דַּ֚ע כִּי־מ֣וֹת תָּמ֔וּת אַתָּ֖ה וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֨m 'abiyme֜leke bּabּo֗qer vayּiqera'֙ lekal-'abada֔yv vayedabּe֛r 'et-kּal-hadּebari֥ym ha'e֖lּeh bּe'azeneyhe֑m vayּiֽyre'֥u ha'anashshi֖ym me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning Abimelech summoned all his officials, and when he told them all that had happened, they were very much afraid.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּקְרָא֙ לְכָל־עֲבָדָ֔יו וַיְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶת־כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּֽירְא֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים מְאֹֽד׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ 'abiyme֜leke le'aberaha֗m vayּo֨'mer l֜o meֽh-'ashsi֤yta lּa֨nu֙ umeֽh-chata֣'tiy la֔ke kּiֽy-hebe֧'ta 'ala֛y ve'al-mamelaketּi֖y chata'a֣h gedola֑h ma'ashsiym֙ 'ashshe֣r lo'-yeֽ'ashs֔u 'ashsi֖yta 'imּadiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abimelech called Abraham in and said, "What have you done to us? How have I wronged you that you have brought such great guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should never be done."

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ לְאַבְרָהָ֗ם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר ל֜וֹ מֶֽה־עָשִׂ֤יתָ לָּ֨נוּ֙ וּמֶֽה־חָטָ֣אתִי לָ֔ךְ כִּֽי־הֵבֵ֧אתָ עָלַ֛י וְעַל־מַמְלַכְתִּ֖י חֲטָאָ֣ה גְדֹלָ֑ה מַעֲשִׂים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹא־יֵֽעָשׂ֔וּ עָשִׂ֖יתָ עִמָּדִֽי׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'abiyme֖leke 'el-'aberaha֑m ma֣h ra'i֔yta kּi֥y 'ashsi֖yta 'et-hadּaba֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Abimelech asked Abraham, "What did you see, that you have done this thing?"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֑ם מָ֣ה רָאִ֔יתָ כִּ֥י עָשִׂ֖יתָ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'aberaha֔m kּi֣y 'ama֗retּiy ra֚q 'eyn-yire'a֣t 'elohi֔ym bּamּaq֖om hazּe֑h vaharag֖uniy 'al-dּeba֥r 'ishshetּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham replied, "I thought to myself, 'There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.'"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם כִּ֣י אָמַ֗רְתִּי רַ֚ק אֵין־יִרְאַ֣ת אֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּמָּק֖וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַהֲרָג֖וּנִי עַל־דְּבַ֥ר אִשְׁתִּֽי׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vegam-'amena֗h 'achoti֤y bat-'abiy֙ hi֔v 'a֖ke lo֣ bat-'imּi֑y vatּehiy-li֖y le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife.

וְגַם־אָמְנָ֗ה אֲחֹתִ֤י בַת־אָבִי֙ הִ֔וא אַ֖ךְ לֹ֣א בַת־אִמִּ֑י וַתְּהִי־לִ֖י לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y kּa'ashshe֧r hite'֣u 'oti֗y 'elohiym֮ mibּe֣yt 'abiy֒ va'oma֣r la֔hּ ze֣h chasedּe֔ke 'ashshe֥r tּa'ashsi֖y 'imּadi֑y 'e֤l kּal-hamּaqom֙ 'ashshe֣r nab֣o shsha֔mּah 'imeriy-li֖y 'achi֥y hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And it was, when God caused me to wander from my father's house, that I said to her, 'This is the loving-kindness (Chesed) you can show me: Everywhere we go, say of me, "He is my brother."'"

וַיְהִ֞י כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר הִתְע֣וּ אֹתִ֗י אֱלֹהִים֮ מִבֵּ֣ית אָבִי֒ וָאֹמַ֣ר לָ֔הּ זֶ֣ה חַסְדֵּ֔ךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר תַּעֲשִׂ֖י עִמָּדִ֑י אֶ֤ל כָּל־הַמָּקוֹם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָב֣וֹא שָׁ֔מָּה אִמְרִי־לִ֖י אָחִ֥י הֽוּא׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch 'abiyme֜leke tzo֣'n ubaqa֗r va'abadiym֙ ushshepacho֔t vayּitּe֖n le'aberaha֑m vayּa֣shsheb l֔o 'e֖t shsara֥h 'ishshetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abimelech took sheep and cattle and male and female servants and gave them to Abraham, and he returned Sarah his wife to him.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ צֹ֣אן וּבָקָ֗ר וַעֲבָדִים֙ וּשְׁפָחֹ֔ת וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לְאַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיָּ֣שֶׁב ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת שָׂרָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'abiyme֔leke hinּe֥h 'aretzi֖y lepane֑yka bּatּ֥ob bּe'eyne֖yka shsheֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Abimelech said, "Behold, my land is before you; live wherever you please."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ הִנֵּ֥ה אַרְצִ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ בַּטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ שֵֽׁב׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): uleshsara֣h 'ama֗r hinּe֨h nata֜tּiy 'e֤lep kּe֨sep֙ le'achi֔yke hinּe֤h hu'-lake֙ kּes֣ut 'eyna֔yim leko֖l 'ashshe֣r 'itּa֑ke ve'e֥t kּo֖l venokaֽchat׃
Edified Edition (EDE)To Sarah he said, "Behold, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. This is for you a covering of the eyes before all who are with you; and before everyone you are vindicated."

וּלְשָׂרָ֣ה אָמַ֗ר הִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֜תִּי אֶ֤לֶף כֶּ֨סֶף֙ לְאָחִ֔יךְ הִנֵּ֤ה הוּא־לָךְ֙ כְּס֣וּת עֵינַ֔יִם לְכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתָּ֑ךְ וְאֵ֥ת כֹּ֖ל וְנֹכָֽחַת׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitepּalּe֥l 'aberaha֖m 'el-ha'elohi֑ym vayּirepּa֨ 'elohi֜ym 'et-'abiyme֧leke ve'et-'ishshetּ֛o ve'amehota֖yv vayּeleֽdu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham prayed to God, and God healed Abimelech, his wife and his female servants so they could have children again,

וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיִּרְפָּ֨א אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֧לֶךְ וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּ֛וֹ וְאַמְהֹתָ֖יו וַיֵּלֵֽדוּ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-'atzo֤r 'atzar֙ yehva֔h bּe'a֥d kּal-re֖chem lebe֣yt 'abiyme֑leke 'al-dּeba֥r shsara֖h 'e֥shshet 'aberahaֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)for the LORD had closed up every womb in Abimelech's household because of Abraham's wife Sarah.

כִּֽי־עָצֹ֤ר עָצַר֙ יְהוָ֔ה בְּעַ֥ד כָּל־רֶ֖חֶם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עַל־דְּבַ֥ר שָׂרָ֖ה אֵ֥שֶׁת אַבְרָהָֽם׃ס
