Chapter 21
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayhva֛h pּaqa֥d 'et-shsara֖h kּa'ashshe֣r 'ama֑r vayּa֧'ashs yehva֛h leshsara֖h kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD attended to (paqad) Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised.

וַֽיהוָ֛ה פָּקַ֥ד אֶת־שָׂרָ֖ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמָ֑ר וַיַּ֧עַשׂ יְהוָ֛ה לְשָׂרָ֖ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּahar֩ vatּe֨led shsara֧h le'aberaha֛m bּe֖n lizequna֑yv lamּo'e֕d 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r 'ot֖o 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.

וַתַּהַר֩ וַתֵּ֨לֶד שָׂרָ֧ה לְאַבְרָהָ֛ם בֵּ֖ן לִזְקֻנָ֑יו לַמּוֹעֵ֕ד אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ 'aberaha֜m 'eֽt-shshem-bּen֧o hanּֽolad-l֛o 'ashsher-yaledah-lּ֥o shsara֖h yitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham gave the name Isaac (He Laughs) to the son Sarah bore him.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶֽת־שֶׁם־בְּנ֧וֹ הַנּֽוֹלַד־ל֛וֹ אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָה־לּ֥וֹ שָׂרָ֖ה יִצְחָֽק׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤mal 'aberaham֙ 'et-yitzecha֣q bּen֔o bּen-shshemona֖t yami֑ym kּa'ashshe֛r tziua֥h 'ot֖o 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.

וַיָּ֤מָל אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶת־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֔וֹ בֶּן־שְׁמֹנַ֖ת יָמִ֑ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה אֹת֖וֹ אֱלֹהִֽים׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aberaha֖m bּen-me'a֣t shshana֑h bּehiua֣led l֔o 'e֖t yitzecha֥q bּenֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

וְאַבְרָהָ֖ם בֶּן־מְאַ֣ת שָׁנָ֑ה בְּהִוָּ֣לֶד ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת יִצְחָ֥ק בְּנֽוֹ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer shsara֔h tzecho֕q 'a֥shsah li֖y 'elohi֑ym kּal-hashshּome֖'a yiֽtzechaq-liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר שָׂרָ֔ה צְחֹ֕ק עָ֥שָׂה לִ֖י אֱלֹהִ֑ים כָּל־הַשֹּׁמֵ֖עַ יִֽצְחַק־לִֽי׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֗'mer mi֤y milּel֙ le'aberaha֔m heyni֥yqah bani֖ym shsara֑h kּiֽy-yala֥detּiy be֖n lizequnaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר מִ֤י מִלֵּל֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם הֵינִ֥יקָה בָנִ֖ים שָׂרָ֑ה כִּֽי־יָלַ֥דְתִּי בֵ֖ן לִזְקֻנָֽיו׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigedּa֥l hayּe֖led vayּigּama֑l vayּa֤'ashs 'aberaham֙ mishshetּe֣h gad֔ol bּey֖om higּame֥l 'et-yitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.

וַיִּגְדַּ֥ל הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַיִּגָּמַ֑ל וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אַבְרָהָם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֣ה גָד֔וֹל בְּי֖וֹם הִגָּמֵ֥ל אֶת־יִצְחָֽק׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֨re shsara֜h 'eֽt-bּen-haga֧r hamּitzeri֛yt 'ashsher-yaleda֥h le'aberaha֖m metzacheֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking (m'tzacheq).

וַתֵּ֨רֶא שָׂרָ֜ה אֶֽת־בֶּן־הָגָ֧ר הַמִּצְרִ֛ית אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָ֥ה לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם מְצַחֵֽק׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ le'aberaha֔m gּare֛shsh ha'ama֥h hazּo֖'t ve'et-bּena֑hּ kּi֣y lo֤ yiyrashsh֙ bּen-ha'ama֣h hazּo֔'t 'im-bּeni֖y 'im-yitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)so she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם גָּרֵ֛שׁ הָאָמָ֥ה הַזֹּ֖את וְאֶת־בְּנָ֑הּ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יִירַשׁ֙ בֶּן־הָאָמָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את עִם־בְּנִ֖י עִם־יִצְחָֽק׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧ra hadּaba֛r me'o֖d bּe'eyne֣y 'aberaha֑m 'a֖l 'odo֥t bּenֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.

וַיֵּ֧רַע הַדָּבָ֛ר מְאֹ֖ד בְּעֵינֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם עַ֖ל אוֹדֹ֥ת בְּנֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'elohi֜ym 'el-'aberaha֗m 'al-yera֤ bּe'eyne֨yka֙ 'al-hanּa֣'ar ve'al-'amate֔ka kּol֩ 'ashshe֨r tּo'ma֥r 'ele֛yka shsara֖h shshema֣ bּeqola֑hּ kּi֣y beyitzecha֔q yiqּare֥ leka֖ zaֽra'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֗ם אַל־יֵרַ֤ע בְּעֵינֶ֨יךָ֙ עַל־הַנַּ֣עַר וְעַל־אֲמָתֶ֔ךָ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תֹּאמַ֥ר אֵלֶ֛יךָ שָׂרָ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלָ֑הּ כִּ֣י בְיִצְחָ֔ק יִקָּרֵ֥א לְךָ֖ זָֽרַע׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֥m 'et-bּen-ha'ama֖h leg֣oy 'ashsiyme֑nּu kּi֥y zare'aka֖ hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring."

וְגַ֥ם אֶת־בֶּן־הָאָמָ֖ה לְג֣וֹי אֲשִׂימֶ֑נּוּ כִּ֥י זַרְעֲךָ֖ הֽוּא׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֣m 'aberaha֣m ׀ bּabּo֡qer vayּiֽqּaֽch-lechem֩ veche֨mat ma֜yim vayּitּe֣n 'el-ha֠gar shsa֧m 'al-shshikema֛hּ ve'et-hayּe֖led vaֽyeshshalּeche֑ha vatּe֣leke vatּe֔ta bּemidebּa֖r bּe'e֥r shshaֽba'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֣ם אַבְרָהָ֣ם ׀ בַּבֹּ֡קֶר וַיִּֽקַּֽח־לֶחֶם֩ וְחֵ֨מַת מַ֜יִם וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֶל־הָ֠גָר שָׂ֧ם עַל־שִׁכְמָ֛הּ וְאֶת־הַיֶּ֖לֶד וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֶ֑הָ וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ וַתֵּ֔תַע בְּמִדְבַּ֖ר בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikel֥u hamּa֖yim min-hache֑met vatּashshele֣ke 'et-hayּe֔led tּa֖chat 'acha֥d hashsּiychiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.

וַיִּכְל֥וּ הַמַּ֖יִם מִן־הַחֵ֑מֶת וַתַּשְׁלֵ֣ךְ אֶת־הַיֶּ֔לֶד תַּ֖חַת אַחַ֥ד הַשִּׂיחִֽם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּeleke֩ vatּe֨shsheb la֜hּ minּe֗ged harecheq֙ kּimetachave֣y qe֔shshet kּi֣y 'ֽamera֔h 'al-'ere'e֖h bּem֣ot hayּa֑led vatּe֣shsheb minּe֔ged vatּishsּa֥ 'et-qola֖hּ vatּeֽbekּe׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there, she began to sob.

וַתֵּלֶךְ֩ וַתֵּ֨שֶׁב לָ֜הּ מִנֶּ֗גֶד הַרְחֵק֙ כִּמְטַחֲוֵ֣י קֶ֔שֶׁת כִּ֣י אָֽמְרָ֔ה אַל־אֶרְאֶ֖ה בְּמ֣וֹת הַיָּ֑לֶד וַתֵּ֣שֶׁב מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַתִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־קֹלָ֖הּ וַתֵּֽבְךְּ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֣ 'elohiym֮ 'et-q֣ol hanּa'ar֒ vayּiqera'֩ male'a֨ke 'elohi֤ym ׀ 'el-hagar֙ min-hashshּama֔yim vayּo֥'mer la֖hּ mah-lּa֣ke haga֑r 'al-tּi֣yre'i֔y kּiֽy-shshama֧ 'elohi֛ym 'el-q֥ol hanּa֖'ar bּa'ashshe֥r hu'-shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע אֱלֹהִים֮ אֶת־ק֣וֹל הַנַּעַר֒ וַיִּקְרָא֩ מַלְאַ֨ךְ אֱלֹהִ֤ים ׀ אֶל־הָגָר֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָ֖הּ מַה־לָּ֣ךְ הָגָ֑ר אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־שָׁמַ֧ע אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶל־ק֥וֹל הַנַּ֖עַר בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר הוּא־שָֽׁם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): q֚umiy shse'i֣y 'et-hanּa֔'ar vehachazi֥yqiy 'et-yade֖ke bּ֑o kּiֽy-leg֥oy gּad֖ol 'ashsiymeֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."

ק֚וּמִי שְׂאִ֣י אֶת־הַנַּ֔עַר וְהַחֲזִ֥יקִי אֶת־יָדֵ֖ךְ בּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־לְג֥וֹי גָּד֖וֹל אֲשִׂימֶֽנּוּ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipeqa֤ch 'elohiym֙ 'et-'eyne֔yha vatּe֖re bּe'e֣r ma֑yim vatּe֜leke vatּemalּe֤ 'et-hache֨met֙ ma֔yim vatּa֖shsheqe 'et-hanּaֽ'ar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

וַיִּפְקַ֤ח אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־עֵינֶ֔יהָ וַתֵּ֖רֶא בְּאֵ֣ר מָ֑יִם וַתֵּ֜לֶךְ וַתְּמַלֵּ֤א אֶת־הַחֵ֨מֶת֙ מַ֔יִם וַתַּ֖שְׁקְ אֶת־הַנָּֽעַר׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֧y 'elohi֛ym 'et-hanּa֖'ar vayּigedּa֑l vayּe֨shsheb֙ bּamּidebּa֔r vayehi֖y robe֥h qashshּaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.

וַיְהִ֧י אֱלֹהִ֛ים אֶת־הַנַּ֖עַר וַיִּגְדָּ֑ל וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר וַיְהִ֖י רֹבֶ֥ה קַשָּֽׁת׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֖shsheb bּemidebּa֣r pּa'ra֑n vatּiֽqּaֽch-l֥o 'imּ֛o 'ishshּa֖h me'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.

וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר פָּארָ֑ן וַתִּֽקַּֽח־ל֥וֹ אִמּ֛וֹ אִשָּׁ֖ה מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehiy֙ bּa'e֣t hahi֔v vayּo֣'mer 'abiyme֗leke upiykol֙ shsar-tzeba'֔o 'el-'aberaha֖m le'mo֑r 'elohi֣ym 'imּeka֔ bּeko֥l 'ashsher-'atּa֖h 'oshseֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At that time Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.

וַֽיְהִי֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וּפִיכֹל֙ שַׂר־צְבָא֔וֹ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אֱלֹהִ֣ים עִמְּךָ֔ בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־אַתָּ֖ה עֹשֶֽׂה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h hishshּa֨be'ah lּi֤y beֽ'lohiym֙ he֔nּah 'im-tּishsheqo֣r li֔y uleniyni֖y ulenekedּi֑y kּache֜sed 'ashsher-'ashsi֤ytiy 'imּeka֙ tּa'ashse֣h 'imּadi֔y ve'im-ha'a֖retz 'ashsher-gּa֥retּah bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness (Chesed) I have shown to you."

וְעַתָּ֗ה הִשָּׁ֨בְעָה לִּ֤י בֵֽאלֹהִים֙ הֵ֔נָּה אִם־תִּשְׁקֹ֣ר לִ֔י וּלְנִינִ֖י וּלְנֶכְדִּ֑י כַּחֶ֜סֶד אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֤יתִי עִמְּךָ֙ תַּעֲשֶׂ֣ה עִמָּדִ֔י וְעִם־הָאָ֖רֶץ אֲשֶׁר־גַּ֥רְתָּה בָּֽהּ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'aberaha֔m 'anoki֖y 'ishshּabeֽ'a׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham said, "I swear it."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם אָנֹכִ֖י אִשָּׁבֵֽעַ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehoki֥cha 'aberaha֖m 'et-'abiyme֑leke 'al-'odot֙ bּe'e֣r hamּa֔yim 'ashshe֥r gּazel֖u 'abede֥y 'abiymeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham complained to Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized.

וְהוֹכִ֥חַ אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ עַל־אֹדוֹת֙ בְּאֵ֣ר הַמַּ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר גָּזְל֖וּ עַבְדֵ֥י אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'abiyme֔leke lo֣ yada֔'etּiy mi֥y 'ashsa֖h 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vegam-'atּa֞h lo'-higּa֣detּa lּi֗y vega֧m 'anoki֛y lo֥ shshama֖'etּiy bּiletּi֥y hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Abimelech said, "I don't know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי מִ֥י עָשָׂ֖ה אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וְגַם־אַתָּ֞ה לֹא־הִגַּ֣דְתָּ לִּ֗י וְגַ֧ם אָנֹכִ֛י לֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי בִּלְתִּ֥י הַיּֽוֹם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֤ch 'aberaham֙ tzo֣'n ubaqa֔r vayּitּe֖n la'abiyme֑leke vayּikeret֥u shsheneyhe֖m bּeriֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abraham took sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelech, and the two men made a treaty.

וַיִּקַּ֤ח אַבְרָהָם֙ צֹ֣אן וּבָקָ֔ר וַיִּתֵּ֖ן לַאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם בְּרִֽית׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּatzּe֣b 'aberaha֗m 'et-shshe֛ba kּibeshso֥t hatzּo֖'n lebadּeheֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,

וַיַּצֵּ֣ב אַבְרָהָ֗ם אֶת־שֶׁ֛בַע כִּבְשֹׂ֥ת הַצֹּ֖אן לְבַדְּהֶֽן׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'abiyme֖leke 'el-'aberaha֑m ma֣h he֗nּah shshe֤ba kּebashsot֙ ha'e֔lּeh 'ashshe֥r hitzּa֖betּa lebadּaֽnah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and Abimelech asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֑ם מָ֣ה הֵ֗נָּה שֶׁ֤בַע כְּבָשֹׂת֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִצַּ֖בְתָּ לְבַדָּֽנָה׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer kּi֚y 'et-shshe֣ba kּebashso֔t tּiqּa֖ch miyּadi֑y bּa'abur֙ tּiֽheyeh-lּi֣y le'eda֔h kּi֥y chapa֖retּiy 'et-habּe'e֥r hazּoֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well."

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֚י אֶת־שֶׁ֣בַע כְּבָשֹׂ֔ת תִּקַּ֖ח מִיָּדִ֑י בַּעֲבוּר֙ תִּֽהְיֶה־לִּ֣י לְעֵדָ֔ה כִּ֥י חָפַ֖רְתִּי אֶת־הַבְּאֵ֥ר הַזֹּֽאת׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֗n qara֛ lamּaq֥om hah֖u bּe'e֣r shsha֑ba kּi֛y shsha֥m nishshebּe'֖u shsheneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath (Shava) there.

עַל־כֵּ֗ן קָרָ֛א לַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע כִּ֛י שָׁ֥ם נִשְׁבְּע֖וּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikeret֥u beri֖yt bּibe'e֣r shsha֑ba vayּa֣qam 'abiyme֗leke upiykol֙ shsar-tzeba'֔o vayּashshu֖bu 'el-'e֥retz pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.

וַיִּכְרְת֥וּ בְרִ֖ית בִּבְאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיָּ֣קָם אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וּפִיכֹל֙ שַׂר־צְבָא֔וֹ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּa֥ 'e֖shshel bּibe'e֣r shsha֑ba vayּi֨qera'-shsha֔m bּeshshe֥m yehva֖h 'e֥l 'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God (El Olam).

וַיִּטַּ֥ע אֶ֖שֶׁל בִּבְאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיִּ֨קְרָא־שָׁ֔ם בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה אֵ֥ל עוֹלָֽם׃
