Chapter 22
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'achar֙ hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh veha֣'elohi֔ym nisּa֖h 'et-'aberaha֑m vayּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv 'aberaha֖m vayּo֥'mer hinּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After these things God tested (nissah) Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Hinneni (Here am I)," he replied.

וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וְהָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים נִסָּ֖ה אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אַבְרָהָ֖ם וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֡'mer qach-na֠ 'et-bּineka֨ 'et-yechiֽydeka֤ 'ashsher-'aha֨betּa֙ 'et-yitzecha֔q veleke-leka֔ 'el-'e֖retz hamּoriyּa֑h veha'ale֤hu shsham֙ le'ola֔h 'a֚l 'acha֣d heֽhari֔ym 'ashshe֖r 'oma֥r 'eleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said, "Take your son, your only (yachid) son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר קַח־נָ֠א אֶת־בִּנְךָ֨ אֶת־יְחִֽידְךָ֤ אֲשֶׁר־אָהַ֨בְתָּ֙ אֶת־יִצְחָ֔ק וְלֶךְ־לְךָ֔ אֶל־אֶ֖רֶץ הַמֹּרִיָּ֑ה וְהַעֲלֵ֤הוּ שָׁם֙ לְעֹלָ֔ה עַ֚ל אַחַ֣ד הֶֽהָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֨m 'aberaha֜m bּabּo֗qer vaֽyּachaboshsh֙ 'et-chamor֔o vayּiqּa֞ch 'et-shshene֤y ne'arayv֙ 'itּ֔o ve'e֖t yitzecha֣q bּen֑o vayebaqּa'֙ 'atze֣y 'ola֔h vayּa֣qam vayּe֔leke 'el-hamּaq֖om 'ashsher-'aֽmar-l֥o ha'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם אַבְרָהָ֜ם בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ אֶת־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־שְׁנֵ֤י נְעָרָיו֙ אִתּ֔וֹ וְאֵ֖ת יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֑וֹ וַיְבַקַּע֙ עֲצֵ֣י עֹלָ֔ה וַיָּ֣קָם וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ אֶל־הַמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־אָֽמַר־ל֥וֹ הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֗y vayּishsּa֨ 'aberaha֧m 'et-'eyna֛yv vayּa֥re 'et-hamּaq֖om merachoֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.

בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י וַיִּשָּׂ֨א אַבְרָהָ֧ם אֶת־עֵינָ֛יו וַיַּ֥רְא אֶת־הַמָּק֖וֹם מֵרָחֹֽק׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'aberaha֜m 'el-ne'ara֗yv shshebu-lake֥m pּoh֙ 'iֽm-hacham֔or va'ani֣y vehanּa֔'ar neleka֖h 'ad-kּo֑h veniֽshshetּachave֖h venashsh֥ubah 'aleykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to his servants, "Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship (v'nishtachaveh) and then we will come back to you."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶל־נְעָרָ֗יו שְׁבוּ־לָכֶ֥ם פֹּה֙ עִֽם־הַחֲמ֔וֹר וַאֲנִ֣י וְהַנַּ֔עַר נֵלְכָ֖ה עַד־כֹּ֑ה וְנִֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶ֖ה וְנָשׁ֥וּבָה אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch 'aberaha֜m 'et-'atze֣y ha'ola֗h vayּa֨shsem֙ 'al-yitzecha֣q bּen֔o vayּiqּa֣ch bּeyad֔o 'et-ha'e֖shsh ve'et-haֽmּa'ake֑let vayּelek֥u shsheneyhe֖m yachedּaֽv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together,

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־עֲצֵ֣י הָעֹלָ֗ה וַיָּ֨שֶׂם֙ עַל־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֔וֹ וַיִּקַּ֣ח בְּיָד֔וֹ אֶת־הָאֵ֖שׁ וְאֶת־הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֑לֶת וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם יַחְדָּֽו׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yitzecha֜q 'el-'aberaha֤m 'abiyv֙ vayּo֣'mer 'abi֔y vayּo֖'mer hinּe֣nּiֽy beni֑y vayּo֗'mer hinּe֤h ha'eshsh֙ veha֣'etzi֔ym ve'ayּe֥h hashsּe֖h le'olaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Hinneni (Yes, my son)," Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יִצְחָ֜ק אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֤ם אָבִיו֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָבִ֔י וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֶּ֣נִּֽי בְנִ֑י וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּ֤ה הָאֵשׁ֙ וְהָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאַיֵּ֥ה הַשֶּׂ֖ה לְעֹלָֽה׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'aberaha֔m 'elohi֞ym yire'eh-lּ֥o hashsּe֛h le'ola֖h bּeni֑y vayּelek֥u shsheneyhe֖m yachedּaֽv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham answered, "God will see to (yir'eh) it for Himself, my son; He will provide the lamb for the burnt offering." And the two of them went on together.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֱלֹהִ֞ים יִרְאֶה־לּ֥וֹ הַשֶּׂ֛ה לְעֹלָ֖ה בְּנִ֑י וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֖ם יַחְדָּֽו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֗'u 'eֽl-hamּaqom֮ 'ashshe֣r 'aֽmar-l֣o ha'elohiym֒ vayּi֨ben shsha֤m 'aberaham֙ 'et-hamּizebּe֔cha vaֽyּa'aro֖ke 'et-ha'etzi֑ym vaֽyּa'aqod֙ 'et-yitzecha֣q bּen֔o vayּa֤shsem 'oto֙ 'al-hamּizebּe֔cha mimּa֖'al la'etziֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.

וַיָּבֹ֗אוּ אֶֽל־הַמָּקוֹם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָֽמַר־ל֣וֹ הָאֱלֹהִים֒ וַיִּ֨בֶן שָׁ֤ם אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶת־הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ אֶת־הָעֵצִ֑ים וַֽיַּעֲקֹד֙ אֶת־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֔וֹ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם אֹתוֹ֙ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ מִמַּ֖עַל לָעֵצִֽים׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch 'aberaham֙ 'et-yad֔o vayּiqּa֖ch 'et-haֽmּa'ake֑let lishshecho֖t 'et-bּenֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶת־יָד֔וֹ וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־הַֽמַּאֲכֶ֑לֶת לִשְׁחֹ֖ט אֶת־בְּנֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ 'ela֜yv male'a֤ke yehvah֙ min-hashshּama֔yim vayּo֖'mer 'aberaha֣m ׀ 'aberaha֑m vayּo֖'mer hinּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!" "Hinneni," he replied.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֵלָ֜יו מַלְאַ֤ךְ יְהוָה֙ מִן־הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַבְרָהָ֣ם ׀ אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הִנֵּֽנִי׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer 'al-tּishshela֤ch yaֽdeka֙ 'el-hanּa֔'ar ve'al-tּa֥'ashs l֖o me'֑umּah kּi֣y ׀ 'atּa֣h yada֗'etּiy kּiֽy-yere֤ 'elohiym֙ 'a֔tּah velo֥ chashsa֛ketּa 'et-bּineka֥ 'et-yechiydeka֖ mimּeֽnּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from Me your son, your only (yachid) son."

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אַל־תִּשְׁלַ֤ח יָֽדְךָ֙ אֶל־הַנַּ֔עַר וְאַל־תַּ֥עַשׂ ל֖וֹ מְא֑וּמָּה כִּ֣י ׀ עַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֗עְתִּי כִּֽי־יְרֵ֤א אֱלֹהִים֙ אַ֔תָּה וְלֹ֥א חָשַׂ֛כְתָּ אֶת־בִּנְךָ֥ אֶת־יְחִידְךָ֖ מִמֶּֽנִּי׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsּa֨ 'aberaha֜m 'et-'eyna֗yv vayּare'֙ vehinּeh-'a֔yil 'acha֕r ne'echa֥z bּasּeba֖ke bּeqarena֑yv vayּe֤leke 'aberaham֙ vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-ha'a֔yil vayּa'ale֥hu le'ola֖h tּa֥chat bּenֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.

וַיִּשָּׂ֨א אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּרְא֙ וְהִנֵּה־אַ֔יִל אַחַ֕ר נֶאֱחַ֥ז בַּסְּבַ֖ךְ בְּקַרְנָ֑יו וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ אַבְרָהָם֙ וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־הָאַ֔יִל וַיַּעֲלֵ֥הוּ לְעֹלָ֖ה תַּ֥חַת בְּנֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֧ 'aberaha֛m shsheֽm-hamּaq֥om hah֖u yehva֣h ׀ yire'e֑h 'ashsher֙ ye'ame֣r hayּ֔om bּeha֥r yehva֖h yera'eֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abraham called that place the LORD-Yir'eh (the LORD Will Provide). And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided."

וַיִּקְרָ֧א אַבְרָהָ֛ם שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא יְהוָ֣ה ׀ יִרְאֶ֑ה אֲשֶׁר֙ יֵאָמֵ֣ר הַיּ֔וֹם בְּהַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה יֵרָאֶֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֛ male'a֥ke yehva֖h 'el-'aberaha֑m shsheni֖yt min-hashshּamaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The angel of the LORD called into Abraham from heaven a second time

וַיִּקְרָ֛א מַלְאַ֥ךְ יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־אַבְרָהָ֑ם שֵׁנִ֖ית מִן־הַשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer bּi֥y nishshebּa֖'etּiy ne'um-yehva֑h kּi֗y ya֚'an 'ashshe֤r 'ashsi֨yta֙ 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֔h velo֥ chashsa֖ketּa 'et-bּineka֥ 'et-yechiydeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and said, "I swear (nishba'ati) by Myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only (yachid) son,

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בִּ֥י נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי נְאֻם־יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֗י יַ֚עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשִׂ֨יתָ֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה וְלֹ֥א חָשַׂ֖כְתָּ אֶת־בִּנְךָ֥ אֶת־יְחִידֶֽךָ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-bare֣ke 'abarekeka֗ veharebּa֨h 'arebּe֤h 'eֽt-zare'aka֙ kּekokebe֣y hashshּama֔yim vekach֕ol 'ashshe֖r 'al-shsepa֣t hayּa֑m veyira֣shsh zare'aka֔ 'e֖t shsha֥'ar 'oyebaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will surely bless you and make your offspring as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your offspring will take possession of the gates of their enemies,

כִּֽי־בָרֵ֣ךְ אֲבָרֶכְךָ֗ וְהַרְבָּ֨ה אַרְבֶּ֤ה אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ כְּכוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְכַח֕וֹל אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־שְׂפַ֣ת הַיָּ֑ם וְיִרַ֣שׁ זַרְעֲךָ֔ אֵ֖ת שַׁ֥עַר אֹיְבָֽיו׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehitebּarak֣u bezare'aka֔ kּo֖l gּoye֣y ha'a֑retz 'e֕qeb 'ashshe֥r shshama֖'etּa bּeqoliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice."

וְהִתְבָּרֲכ֣וּ בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ עֵ֕קֶב אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁמַ֖עְתָּ בְּקֹלִֽי׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤shshab 'aberaham֙ 'el-ne'ara֔yv vayּaqu֛mu vayּelek֥u yachedּa֖v 'el-bּe'e֣r shsha֑ba vayּe֥shsheb 'aberaha֖m bּibe'e֥r shshaֽba'׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

וַיָּ֤שָׁב אַבְרָהָם֙ אֶל־נְעָרָ֔יו וַיָּקֻ֛מוּ וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ יַחְדָּ֖ו אֶל־בְּאֵ֣ר שָׁ֑בַע וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב אַבְרָהָ֖ם בִּבְאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃פ

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'acharey֙ hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh vayּugּa֥d le'aberaha֖m le'mo֑r hi֠nּeh yaleda֨h milekּa֥h gam-hi֛v bּani֖ym lenach֥or 'achiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Some time later Abraham was told, "Milkah is also a mother; she has borne sons to your brother Nahor:

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הִ֠נֵּה יָלְדָ֨ה מִלְכָּ֥ה גַם־הִ֛וא בָּנִ֖ים לְנָח֥וֹר אָחִֽיךָ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): et-'֥utz bּekor֖o ve'et-bּ֣uz 'achi֑yv ve'et-qemu'e֖l 'abi֥y 'araֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Uz the firstborn, Buz his brother, Kemuel (the father of Aram),

אֶת־ע֥וּץ בְּכֹר֖וֹ וְאֶת־בּ֣וּז אָחִ֑יו וְאֶת־קְמוּאֵ֖ל אֲבִ֥י אֲרָֽם׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-kּe֣shsed ve'et-chaz֔o ve'et-pּiledּa֖shsh ve'et-yidela֑p ve'e֖t bּetu'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel."

וְאֶת־כֶּ֣שֶׂד וְאֶת־חֲז֔וֹ וְאֶת־פִּלְדָּ֖שׁ וְאֶת־יִדְלָ֑ף וְאֵ֖ת בְּתוּאֵֽל׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubetu'e֖l yala֣d 'et-ribeqa֑h shshemona֥h 'e֨lּeh֙ yaleda֣h milekּa֔h lenach֖or 'achi֥y 'aberahaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milkah bore these eight sons to Abraham's brother Nahor.

וּבְתוּאֵ֖ל יָלַ֣ד אֶת־רִבְקָ֑ה שְׁמֹנָ֥ה אֵ֨לֶּה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה מִלְכָּ֔ה לְנָח֖וֹר אֲחִ֥י אַבְרָהָֽם׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): upiֽylageshsh֖o ushshema֣hּ re'uma֑h vatּe֤led gּam-hiv'֙ 'et-te֣bach ve'et-gּa֔cham ve'et-tּa֖chashsh ve'eֽt-ma'akaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)His concubine, whose name was Reumah, also had sons: Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.

וּפִֽילַגְשׁ֖וֹ וּשְׁמָ֣הּ רְאוּמָ֑ה וַתֵּ֤לֶד גַּם־הִוא֙ אֶת־טֶ֣בַח וְאֶת־גַּ֔חַם וְאֶת־תַּ֖חַשׁ וְאֶֽת־מַעֲכָֽה׃ס
