Chapter 23
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiheyu֙ chayּe֣y shsara֔h me'a֥h shshana֛h ve'eshseri֥ym shshana֖h veshshe֣ba shshani֑ym shshene֖y chayּe֥y shsaraֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty-seven years old. This was the length of Sarah's life.

וַיִּהְיוּ֙ חַיֵּ֣י שָׂרָ֔ה מֵאָ֥ה שָׁנָ֛ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְשֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים שְׁנֵ֖י חַיֵּ֥י שָׂרָֽה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣mat shsara֗h bּeqireya֥t 'arebּa֛ hi֥v cheber֖on bּe'e֣retz kּena֑'an vayּabo'֙ 'aberaha֔m lisepּo֥d leshsara֖h velibekּotaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Sarah died in Kirjath-Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

וַתָּ֣מָת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִסְפֹּ֥ד לְשָׂרָ֖ה וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam֙ 'aberaha֔m me'a֖l pּene֣y met֑o vayedabּe֥r 'el-bּeney-che֖t le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham rose from beside his dead wife and spoke to the Hittites. He said,

וַיָּ֨קָם֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֣י מֵת֑וֹ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־בְּנֵי־חֵ֖ת לֵאמֹֽר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּer-vetoshsha֥b 'anoki֖y 'imּake֑m tּen֨u li֤y 'achuzּat-qe֨ber֙ 'imּake֔m ve'eqebּera֥h meti֖y milּepanaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"I am a foreigner and a stranger among you. Sell me some property for a burial site here so I can bury my dead."

גֵּר־וְתוֹשָׁ֥ב אָנֹכִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם תְּנ֨וּ לִ֤י אֲחֻזַּת־קֶ֨בֶר֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה מֵתִ֖י מִלְּפָנָֽי׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'an֧u beney-che֛t 'et-'aberaha֖m le'mo֥r lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Hittites answered Abraham,

וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי־חֵ֛ת אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshema'e֣nu ׀ 'adoni֗y neshsi֨y 'elohi֤ym 'atּah֙ bּetoke֔nu bּemibecha֣r qebare֔ynu qebo֖r 'et-mete֑ka 'i֣yshsh mimּe֔nּu 'et-qiber֛o loֽ'-yikele֥h mimּeka֖ miqּebo֥r meteֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Hear us, my lord; you are a prince of God (Nasi Elohim) among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will withhold his tomb from you for the burial of your dead."

שְׁמָעֵ֣נוּ ׀ אֲדֹנִ֗י נְשִׂ֨יא אֱלֹהִ֤ים אַתָּה֙ בְּתוֹכֵ֔נוּ בְּמִבְחַ֣ר קְבָרֵ֔ינוּ קְבֹ֖ר אֶת־מֵתֶ֑ךָ אִ֣ישׁ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ אֶת־קִבְר֛וֹ לֹֽא־יִכְלֶ֥ה מִמְּךָ֖ מִקְּבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧qam 'aberaha֛m vayּishshetּa֥chu le'am-ha'a֖retz libeney-cheֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the Hittites.

וַיָּ֧קָם אַבְרָהָ֛ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לְעַם־הָאָ֖רֶץ לִבְנֵי־חֵֽת׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r 'itּa֖m le'mo֑r 'im-ye֣shsh 'eֽt-napeshsheke֗m liqebּo֤r 'et-metiy֙ milּepana֔y shshema'֕uniy upige'u-li֖y bּe'eper֥on bּen-tzoֽchar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to them, "If you are willing to let me bury my dead, then listen to me and intercede with Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf,

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתָּ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אִם־יֵ֣שׁ אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם לִקְבֹּ֤ר אֶת־מֵתִי֙ מִלְּפָנַ֔י שְׁמָע֕וּנִי וּפִגְעוּ־לִ֖י בְּעֶפְר֥וֹן בֶּן־צֹֽחַר׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyitּen-li֗y 'et-me'ara֤t hamּakepּelah֙ 'ashsher-l֔o 'ashshe֖r bּiqetze֣h shsade֑hu bּeke֨sep male֜ yitּene֥nּah li֛y bּetokeke֖m la'achuzּat-qaֽber׃
Edified Edition (EDE)so that he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he owns at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me for the full price as a burial site in your presence."

וְיִתֶּן־לִ֗י אֶת־מְעָרַ֤ת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּקְצֵ֣ה שָׂדֵ֑הוּ בְּכֶ֨סֶף מָלֵ֜א יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה לִ֛י בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָֽבֶר׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'eper֥on yoshshe֖b bּet֣oke bּeney-che֑t vayּa'an֩ 'eper֨on hachitּi֤y 'et-'aberaham֙ bּe'azene֣y beney-che֔t leko֛l bּa'e֥y shshaֽ'ar-'iyr֖o le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Ephron was sitting among the Hittites, and he answered Abraham in the hearing of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of his city.

וְעֶפְר֥וֹן יֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּת֣וֹךְ בְּנֵי־חֵ֑ת וַיַּעַן֩ עֶפְר֨וֹן הַחִתִּ֤י אֶת־אַבְרָהָם֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֔ת לְכֹ֛ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר־עִיר֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): loֽ'-'adoni֣y shshema'e֔niy hashsּadeh֙ nata֣tּiy la֔ke vehamּe'ara֥h 'ashsher-bּ֖o leka֣ netatּi֑yha le'eyne֧y beney-'amּi֛y netatּi֥yha lּa֖ke qebo֥r meteֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"No, my lord!" he said. "Listen to me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people. Bury your dead."

לֹֽא־אֲדֹנִ֣י שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי הַשָּׂדֶה֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔ךְ וְהַמְּעָרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֖וֹ לְךָ֣ נְתַתִּ֑יהָ לְעֵינֵ֧י בְנֵי־עַמִּ֛י נְתַתִּ֥יהָ לָּ֖ךְ קְבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽךָ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshetּa֨chu֙ 'aberaha֔m lipene֖y 'a֥m ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֨חוּ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֨r 'el-'eper֜on bּe'azene֤y 'am-ha'a֨retz֙ le'mo֔r 'a֛ke 'im-'atּa֥h l֖u shshema'e֑niy nata֜tּiy kּe֤sep hashsּadeh֙ qa֣ch mimּe֔nּiy ve'eqebּera֥h 'et-meti֖y shshaֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and he said to Ephron in their hearing, "Listen to me, if you will. I will pay the price of the field. Accept it from me so I can bury my dead there."

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־עֶפְר֜וֹן בְּאָזְנֵ֤י עַם־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַ֛ךְ אִם־אַתָּ֥ה ל֖וּ שְׁמָעֵ֑נִי נָתַ֜תִּי כֶּ֤סֶף הַשָּׂדֶה֙ קַ֣ח מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה אֶת־מֵתִ֖י שָֽׁמָּה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'an 'eper֛on 'et-'aberaha֖m le'mo֥r lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ephron answered Abraham,

וַיַּ֧עַן עֶפְר֛וֹן אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): adoni֣y shshema'e֔niy 'eretz֩ 'arebּa֨ me'o֧t shsheֽqel-kּe֛sep bּeyni֥y ubeֽyneka֖ mah-hi֑v ve'et-meteka֖ qeboֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Hearken to me, my lord; the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between me and you? Go and bury your dead."

אֲדֹנִ֣י שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי אֶרֶץ֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵאֹ֧ת שֶֽׁקֶל־כֶּ֛סֶף בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵֽינְךָ֖ מַה־הִ֑וא וְאֶת־מֵתְךָ֖ קְבֹֽר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֣ 'aberaham֮ 'el-'eperon֒ vayּishsheqo֤l 'aberaham֙ le'epero֔n 'et-hakּe֕sep 'ashshe֥r dּibּe֖r bּe'azene֣y beney-che֑t 'arebּa֤ me'ot֙ shshe֣qel kּe֔sep 'obe֖r lasּocheֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham heard and agreed to Ephron's terms and weighed out the silver he had named in the hearing of the Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weight current among the merchants.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע אַבְרָהָם֮ אֶל־עֶפְרוֹן֒ וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ל אַבְרָהָם֙ לְעֶפְרֹ֔ן אֶת־הַכֶּ֕סֶף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר בְּאָזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֑ת אַרְבַּ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ שֶׁ֣קֶל כֶּ֔סֶף עֹבֵ֖ר לַסֹּחֵֽר׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam ׀ shsede֣h 'eper֗on 'ashsher֙ bּamּakepּela֔h 'ashshe֖r lipene֣y mamere֑ hashsּadeh֙ vehamּe'ara֣h 'ashsher-bּ֔o vekal-ha'etz֙ 'ashshe֣r bּashsּade֔h 'ashshe֥r bּekal-gּebul֖o sabiֽyb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Ephron's field in Machpelah near Mamre, both the field and the cave in it, and all the trees within the borders of the field, was deeded

וַיָּ֣קָם ׀ שְׂדֵ֣ה עֶפְר֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּמַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י מַמְרֵ֑א הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וְהַמְּעָרָ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֔וֹ וְכָל־הָעֵץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּכָל־גְּבֻל֖וֹ סָבִֽיב׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): le'aberaha֥m lemiqena֖h le'eyne֣y beney-che֑t bּeko֖l bּa'e֥y shshaֽ'ar-'iyrֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)to Abraham as his property in the presence of all the Hittites who had come to the gate of the city.

לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם לְמִקְנָ֖ה לְעֵינֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֑ת בְּכֹ֖ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר־עִירֽוֹ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'acharey-ken֩ qaba֨r 'aberaha֜m 'et-shsara֣h 'ishshetּ֗o 'el-me'ara֞t shsede֧h hamּakepּela֛h 'al-pּene֥y mamere֖ hi֣v cheber֑on bּe'e֖retz kּenaֽ'an׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Afterwards Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah near Mamre (which is at Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֩ קָבַ֨ר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אֶל־מְעָרַ֞ת שְׂדֵ֧ה הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א הִ֣וא חֶבְר֑וֹן בְּאֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam hashsּade֜h vehamּe'ara֧h 'ashsher-bּ֛o le'aberaha֖m la'achuzּat-qa֑ber me'e֖t bּeney-cheֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So the field and the cave in it were deeded to Abraham by the Hittites as a burial site.

וַיָּ֨קָם הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה וְהַמְּעָרָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֛וֹ לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָ֑בֶר מֵאֵ֖ת בְּנֵי־חֵֽת׃ס
