Chapter 25
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧sep 'aberaha֛m vayּiqּa֥ch 'ishshּa֖h ushshema֥hּ qeturaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham had taken another wife, whose name was Keturah.

וַיֹּ֧סֶף אַבְרָהָ֛ם וַיִּקַּ֥ח אִשָּׁ֖ה וּשְׁמָ֥הּ קְטוּרָֽה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֣led l֗o 'et-zimeran֙ ve'et-yaqeshsha֔n ve'et-meda֖n ve'et-mideya֑n ve'et-yishshebּa֖q ve'et-shshֽucha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah.

וַתֵּ֣לֶד ל֗וֹ אֶת־זִמְרָן֙ וְאֶת־יָקְשָׁ֔ן וְאֶת־מְדָ֖ן וְאֶת־מִדְיָ֑ן וְאֶת־יִשְׁבָּ֖ק וְאֶת־שֽׁוּחַ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyaqeshsha֣n yala֔d 'et-shsheba֖ ve'et-dּeda֑n ubene֣y deda֔n hay֛u 'ashshּuri֥m uletushshi֖ym ule'umּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan; the descendants of Dedan were the Ashurites, the Letushites and the Leummites.

וְיָקְשָׁ֣ן יָלַ֔ד אֶת־שְׁבָ֖א וְאֶת־דְּדָ֑ן וּבְנֵ֣י דְדָ֔ן הָי֛וּ אַשּׁוּרִ֥ם וּלְטוּשִׁ֖ים וּלְאֻמִּֽים׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֣y mideya֗n 'eypa֤h va'e֨per֙ vachano֔ke va'abiyda֖ ve'eledּa'a֑h kּal-'e֖lּeh bּene֥y qeturaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanok, Abida and Eldaah. All these were descendants of Keturah.

וּבְנֵ֣י מִדְיָ֗ן עֵיפָ֤ה וָעֵ֨פֶר֙ וַחֲנֹ֔ךְ וַאֲבִידָ֖ע וְאֶלְדָּעָ֑ה כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה בְּנֵ֥י קְטוּרָֽה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֧n 'aberaha֛m 'et-kּal-'ashsher-l֖o leyitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac.

וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אַבְרָהָ֛ם אֶת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ לְיִצְחָֽק׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): velibene֤y hapּiֽylageshshiym֙ 'ashshe֣r le'aberaha֔m nata֥n 'aberaha֖m matּano֑t vaֽyeshshalּeche֞m me'a֨l yitzecha֤q bּeno֙ bּe'ode֣nּu cha֔y qe֖demah 'el-'e֥retz qeֽdem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east.

וְלִבְנֵ֤י הַפִּֽילַגְשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְאַבְרָהָ֔ם נָתַ֥ן אַבְרָהָ֖ם מַתָּנֹ֑ת וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵ֞ם מֵעַ֨ל יִצְחָ֤ק בְּנוֹ֙ בְּעוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חַ֔י קֵ֖דְמָה אֶל־אֶ֥רֶץ קֶֽדֶם׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֗lּeh yeme֛y shsheneֽy-chayּe֥y 'aberaha֖m 'ashsher-cha֑y me'a֥t shshana֛h veshshibe'i֥ym shshana֖h vechame֥shsh shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Abraham lived a hundred and seventy-five years.

וְאֵ֗לֶּה יְמֵ֛י שְׁנֵֽי־חַיֵּ֥י אַבְרָהָ֖ם אֲשֶׁר־חָ֑י מְאַ֥ת שָׁנָ֛ה וְשִׁבְעִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְחָמֵ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigeva֨ vayּa֧mat 'aberaha֛m bּeshseyba֥h toba֖h zaqe֣n veshsabe֑'a vayּe'a֖sep 'el-'amּaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abraham breathed his last and died at a good old age, an old man and full of years; and he was gathered to his people.

וַיִּגְוַ֨ע וַיָּ֧מָת אַבְרָהָ֛ם בְּשֵׂיבָ֥ה טוֹבָ֖ה זָקֵ֣ן וְשָׂבֵ֑עַ וַיֵּאָ֖סֶף אֶל־עַמָּֽיו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqebּer֨u 'ot֜o yitzecha֤q veyishshema'e'l֙ bּana֔yv 'el-me'ara֖t hamּakepּela֑h 'el-shsede֞h 'epero֤n bּen-tzo֨char֙ haֽchitּi֔y 'ashshe֖r 'al-pּene֥y mamereֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah near Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite,

וַיִּקְבְּר֨וּ אֹת֜וֹ יִצְחָ֤ק וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ בָּנָ֔יו אֶל־מְעָרַ֖ת הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֑ה אֶל־שְׂדֵ֞ה עֶפְרֹ֤ן בֶּן־צֹ֨חַר֙ הַֽחִתִּ֔י אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵֽא׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): hashsּade֛h 'ashsher-qana֥h 'aberaha֖m me'e֣t bּeney-che֑t shsha֛mּah qubּa֥r 'aberaha֖m veshsara֥h 'ishshetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the field Abraham had bought from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried with his wife Sarah.

הַשָּׂדֶ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־קָנָ֥ה אַבְרָהָ֖ם מֵאֵ֣ת בְּנֵי־חֵ֑ת שָׁ֛מָּה קֻבַּ֥ר אַבְרָהָ֖ם וְשָׂרָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'acharey֙ m֣ot 'aberaha֔m vayeba֥reke 'elohi֖ym 'et-yitzecha֣q bּen֑o vayּe֣shsheb yitzecha֔q 'im-bּe'e֥r lacha֖y ro'iֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)After Abraham's death, God blessed his son Isaac, who then lived near Beer Lahai Roi.

וַיְהִ֗י אַחֲרֵי֙ מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֔ם וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־יִצְחָ֣ק בְּנ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב יִצְחָ֔ק עִם־בְּאֵ֥ר לַחַ֖י רֹאִֽי׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛lּeh tּoledo֥t yishshema'e֖'l bּen-'aberaha֑m 'ashshe֨r yaleda֜h haga֧r hamּitzeri֛yt shshipecha֥t shsara֖h le'aberahaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Ishmael, whom Sarah's slave Hagar, the Egyptian, bore to Abraham.

וְאֵ֛לֶּה תֹּלְדֹ֥ת יִשְׁמָעֵ֖אל בֶּן־אַבְרָהָ֑ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר יָלְדָ֜ה הָגָ֧ר הַמִּצְרִ֛ית שִׁפְחַ֥ת שָׂרָ֖ה לְאַבְרָהָֽם׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֗lּeh shshemot֙ bּene֣y yishshema'e֔'l bּishshemota֖m letoledota֑m bּeko֤r yishshema'e'l֙ nebayo֔t veqeda֥r ve'adebּe'e֖l umibeshsaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, listed in the order of their birth: Nebaioth the firstborn of Ishmael, Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,

וְאֵ֗לֶּה שְׁמוֹת֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל בִּשְׁמֹתָ֖ם לְתוֹלְדֹתָ֑ם בְּכֹ֤ר יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ נְבָיֹ֔ת וְקֵדָ֥ר וְאַדְבְּאֵ֖ל וּמִבְשָֽׂם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): umishshema֥ veduma֖h umashsּaֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Mishma, Dumah, Massa,

וּמִשְׁמָ֥ע וְדוּמָ֖ה וּמַשָּֽׂא׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): chada֣d veteyma֔ yet֥ur napi֖yshsh vaqeֽdemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish and Kedemah.

חֲדַ֣ד וְתֵימָ֔א יְט֥וּר נָפִ֖ישׁ וָקֵֽדְמָה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh he֞m bּene֤y yishshema'e'l֙ ve'e֣lּeh shshemota֔m bּechatzereyhe֖m ubetiֽyrota֑m shsheneym-'ashsa֥r neshsiy'i֖m le'umּotaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)These were the sons of Ishmael, and these are the names of the twelve tribal rulers according to their settlements and camps.

אֵ֣לֶּה הֵ֞ם בְּנֵ֤י יִשְׁמָעֵאל֙ וְאֵ֣לֶּה שְׁמֹתָ֔ם בְּחַצְרֵיהֶ֖ם וּבְטִֽירֹתָ֑ם שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֥ר נְשִׂיאִ֖ם לְאֻמֹּתָֽם׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֗lּeh shsheney֙ chayּe֣y yishshema'e֔'l me'a֥t shshana֛h ushsheloshshi֥ym shshana֖h veshshe֣ba shshani֑ym vayּigeva֣ vayּa֔mat vayּe'a֖sep 'el-'amּaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ishmael lived a hundred and thirty-seven years. He breathed his last and died, and he was gathered to his people.

וְאֵ֗לֶּה שְׁנֵי֙ חַיֵּ֣י יִשְׁמָעֵ֔אל מְאַ֥ת שָׁנָ֛ה וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְשֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים וַיִּגְוַ֣ע וַיָּ֔מָת וַיֵּאָ֖סֶף אֶל־עַמָּֽיו׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshekּen֨u mֽechaviyla֜h 'ad-shsh֗ur 'ashsher֙ 'al-pּene֣y mitzera֔yim bּo'aka֖h 'ashshּ֑urah 'al-pּene֥y kal-'echa֖yv napaֽl׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border of Egypt, as you go toward Assyria. And they lived in hostility toward all the tribes related to them.

וַיִּשְׁכְּנ֨וּ מֵֽחֲוִילָ֜ה עַד־שׁ֗וּר אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־פְּנֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם בֹּאֲכָ֖ה אַשּׁ֑וּרָה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י כָל־אֶחָ֖יו נָפָֽל׃פ

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛lּeh tּoledo֥t yitzecha֖q bּen-'aberaha֑m 'aberaha֖m holi֥yd 'et-yitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This is the account of the family line of Abraham's son Isaac. Abraham became the father of Isaac,

וְאֵ֛לֶּה תּוֹלְדֹ֥ת יִצְחָ֖ק בֶּן־אַבְרָהָ֑ם אַבְרָהָ֖ם הוֹלִ֥יד אֶת־יִצְחָֽק׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y yitzechaq֙ bּen-'arebּa'i֣ym shshana֔h bּeqachetּ֣o 'et-ribeqa֗h bּat-bּetu'el֙ hֽa'aramּi֔y mipּadּa֖n 'ara֑m 'ach֛ot laba֥n ha'aramּi֖y l֥o le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.

וַיְהִ֤י יִצְחָק֙ בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה בְּקַחְתּ֣וֹ אֶת־רִבְקָ֗ה בַּת־בְּתוּאֵל֙ הָֽאֲרַמִּ֔י מִפַּדַּ֖ן אֲרָ֑ם אֲח֛וֹת לָבָ֥ן הָאֲרַמִּ֖י ל֥וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'etּa֨r yitzecha֤q lֽayhvah֙ leno֣kach 'ishshetּ֔o kּi֥y 'aqara֖h hi֑v vayּe'a֤ter lo֙ yehva֔h vatּa֖har ribeqa֥h 'ishshetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless (aqarah). the LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

וַיֶּעְתַּ֨ר יִצְחָ֤ק לַֽיהוָה֙ לְנֹ֣כַח אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ כִּ֥י עֲקָרָ֖ה הִ֑וא וַיֵּעָ֤תֶר לוֹ֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַתַּ֖הַר רִבְקָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiteroֽtzatz֤u habּaniym֙ bּeqirebּa֔hּ vatּo֣'mer 'im-kּe֔n la֥mּah zּe֖h 'ano֑kiy vatּe֖leke lidero֥shsh 'et-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The babies jostled each other within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to enquire of the LORD.

וַיִּתְרֹֽצֲצ֤וּ הַבָּנִים֙ בְּקִרְבָּ֔הּ וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אִם־כֵּ֔ן לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה אָנֹ֑כִי וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ לִדְרֹ֥שׁ אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h la֗hּ shshene֤y gyym goyim֙ bּebitene֔ke ushshene֣y le'umּi֔ym mimּe'a֖yike yipּare֑du ule'om֙ mile'o֣m yeֽ'ema֔tz vera֖b ya'abo֥d tza'iֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said to her, "Two nations (goyim) are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה לָ֗הּ שְׁנֵ֤י גיים גוֹיִם֙ בְּבִטְנֵ֔ךְ וּשְׁנֵ֣י לְאֻמִּ֔ים מִמֵּעַ֖יִךְ יִפָּרֵ֑דוּ וּלְאֹם֙ מִלְאֹ֣ם יֶֽאֱמָ֔ץ וְרַ֖ב יַעֲבֹ֥ד צָעִֽיר׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimele'֥u yame֖yha lale֑det vehinּe֥h tomi֖m bּebitenaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the time came for her to give birth, there were indeed twin boys in her womb.

וַיִּמְלְא֥וּ יָמֶ֖יהָ לָלֶ֑דֶת וְהִנֵּ֥ה תוֹמִ֖ם בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֤ hari'shshon֙ 'ademoni֔y kּulּ֖o kּe'adּe֣ret shse'a֑r vayּiqere'֥u shshem֖o 'eshsaֽv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The first to come out was red, and his whole body was like a hairy garment; so they named him Esau (Hairy).

וַיֵּצֵ֤א הָרִאשׁוֹן֙ אַדְמוֹנִ֔י כֻּלּ֖וֹ כְּאַדֶּ֣רֶת שֵׂעָ֑ר וַיִּקְרְא֥וּ שְׁמ֖וֹ עֵשָֽׂו׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aֽcharey-ke֞n yatza֣ 'achi֗yv veyad֤o 'oche֨zet֙ bּa'aqe֣b 'eshsa֔v vayּiqera֥ shshem֖o ya'aqo֑b veyitzecha֛q bּen-shshishshּi֥ym shshana֖h bּele֥det 'otaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After this, his brother came out, with his hand grasping Esau's heel; so he was named Jacob (Heel-catcher). Isaac was sixty years old when Rebekah gave birth to them.

וְאַֽחֲרֵי־כֵ֞ן יָצָ֣א אָחִ֗יו וְיָד֤וֹ אֹחֶ֨זֶת֙ בַּעֲקֵ֣ב עֵשָׂ֔ו וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְיִצְחָ֛ק בֶּן־שִׁשִּׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה בְּלֶ֥דֶת אֹתָֽם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayּigedּelu֙ hanּe'ari֔ym vayehi֣y 'eshsa֗v 'i֛yshsh yode֥'a tza֖yid 'i֣yshsh shsade֑h veya'aqob֙ 'i֣yshsh tּa֔m yoshshe֖b 'ohaliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The boys grew up, and Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the open country, but Jacob was an integral (tam) man, dwelling in tents.

וַֽיִּגְדְּלוּ֙ הַנְּעָרִ֔ים וַיְהִ֣י עֵשָׂ֗ו אִ֛ישׁ יֹדֵ֥עַ צַ֖יִד אִ֣ישׁ שָׂדֶ֑ה וְיַעֲקֹב֙ אִ֣ישׁ תָּ֔ם יֹשֵׁ֖ב אֹהָלִֽים׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'eha֥b yitzecha֛q 'et-'eshsa֖v kּiy-tza֣yid bּepi֑yv veribeqa֖h 'ohe֥bet 'eֽt-ya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac, who had a taste for wild game, loved Esau, but Rebekah loved Jacob.

וַיֶּאֱהַ֥ב יִצְחָ֛ק אֶת־עֵשָׂ֖ו כִּי־צַ֣יִד בְּפִ֑יו וְרִבְקָ֖ה אֹהֶ֥בֶת אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹֽב׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥zed ya'aqo֖b nazi֑yd vayּabo֥ 'eshsa֛v min-hashsּade֖h veh֥u 'ayeֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished.

וַיָּ֥זֶד יַעֲקֹ֖ב נָזִ֑יד וַיָּבֹ֥א עֵשָׂ֛ו מִן־הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה וְה֥וּא עָיֵֽף׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'eshsa֜v 'eֽl-ya'aqo֗b hale'iyte֤niy na'֙ min-ha'ado֤m ha'adom֙ hazּe֔h kּi֥y 'aye֖p 'ano֑kiy 'al-kּe֥n qaraֽ'-shshem֖o 'edֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Esau said to Jacob, "Please, let me gulp down some of that red, red stuff (ha-adom ha-adom ha-ze), for I am famished!" (That is why he was also called Edom.)

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר עֵשָׂ֜ו אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֗ב הַלְעִיטֵ֤נִי נָא֙ מִן־הָאָדֹ֤ם הָאָדֹם֙ הַזֶּ֔ה כִּ֥י עָיֵ֖ף אָנֹ֑כִי עַל־כֵּ֥ן קָרָֽא־שְׁמ֖וֹ אֱדֽוֹם׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer ya'aqo֑b mikera֥h kayּ֛om 'et-bּekoֽrateka֖ liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob replied, "First sell me your birthright."

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֑ב מִכְרָ֥ה כַיּ֛וֹם אֶת־בְּכֹֽרָתְךָ֖ לִֽי׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'eshsa֔v hinּe֛h 'anoki֥y hole֖ke lam֑ut velamּah-zּe֥h li֖y bּekoraֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Look, I am about to die," Esau said. "What good is the birthright to me?"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר עֵשָׂ֔ו הִנֵּ֛ה אָנֹכִ֥י הוֹלֵ֖ךְ לָמ֑וּת וְלָמָּה־זֶּ֥ה לִ֖י בְּכֹרָֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer ya'aqo֗b hishshּa֤be'ah lּiy֙ kּayּ֔om vayּishshּaba֖ l֑o vayּimekּo֥r 'et-bּekorat֖o leya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Jacob said, "Swear to me first." So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֗ב הִשָּׁ֤בְעָה לִּי֙ כַּיּ֔וֹם וַיִּשָּׁבַ֖ע ל֑וֹ וַיִּמְכֹּ֥ר אֶת־בְּכֹרָת֖וֹ לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): veya'aqo֞b nata֣n le'eshsa֗v le֚chem unezi֣yd 'adashshi֔ym vayּo֣'kal vayּe֔shshetּe vayּa֖qam vayּela֑ke vayּi֥bez 'eshsa֖v 'et-habּekoraֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised (vayivez) his birthright.

וְיַעֲקֹ֞ב נָתַ֣ן לְעֵשָׂ֗ו לֶ֚חֶם וּנְזִ֣יד עֲדָשִׁ֔ים וַיֹּ֣אכַל וַיֵּ֔שְׁתְּ וַיָּ֖קָם וַיֵּלַ֑ךְ וַיִּ֥בֶז עֵשָׂ֖ו אֶת־הַבְּכֹרָֽה׃ס
