Chapter 26
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y ra'ab֙ bּa'a֔retz milּebad֙ hara'a֣b hari'shsh֔on 'ashshe֥r haya֖h bּiyme֣y 'aberaha֑m vayּe֧leke yitzecha֛q 'el-'abiymּe֥leke meֽleke-pּelishshetּi֖ym gּeraֽrah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was a famine in the land, besides the previous famine in Abraham's time, and Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines in Gerar.

וַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ מִלְּבַד֙ הָרָעָ֣ב הָרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה בִּימֵ֣י אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ יִצְחָ֛ק אֶל־אֲבִימֶּ֥לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים גְּרָֽרָה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּera֤ 'elayv֙ yehva֔h vayּo֖'mer 'al-tּere֣d mitzera֑yemah shsheko֣n bּa'a֔retz 'ashshe֖r 'oma֥r 'eleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, "Do not go down to Egypt; live in the land where I tell you to live.

וַיֵּרָ֤א אֵלָיו֙ יְהוָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תֵּרֵ֣ד מִצְרָ֑יְמָה שְׁכֹ֣ן בָּאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֖ר אֹמַ֥ר אֵלֶֽיךָ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּ֚ur bּa'a֣retz hazּo֔'t ve'eֽheye֥h 'imּeka֖ va'abareke֑kּa kּiֽy-leka֣ uֽlezare'aka֗ 'etּen֙ 'et-kּal-haֽ'aratzo֣t ha'e֔l vahaqiֽmotiy֙ 'et-hashshּebu'a֔h 'ashshe֥r nishshebּa֖'etּiy le'aberaha֥m 'abiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Sojourn in this land for a while, and I will be with you and will bless you. For to you and your offspring I will give all these lands and will confirm the oath I swore to your father Abraham.

גּ֚וּר בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַזֹּ֔את וְאֶֽהְיֶ֥ה עִמְּךָ֖ וַאֲבָרְכֶ֑ךָּ כִּֽי־לְךָ֣ וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֗ אֶתֵּן֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָֽאֲרָצֹ֣ת הָאֵ֔ל וַהֲקִֽמֹתִי֙ אֶת־הַשְּׁבֻעָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר נִשְׁבַּ֖עְתִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם אָבִֽיךָ׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehirebּeyti֤y 'eֽt-zare'aka֙ kּekokebe֣y hashshּama֔yim venatatּi֣y lezare'aka֔ 'e֥t kּal-ha'aratzo֖t ha'e֑l vehitebּarak֣u bezare'aka֔ kּo֖l gּoye֥y ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed,

וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֤י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ כְּכוֹכְבֵ֣י הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וְנָתַתִּ֣י לְזַרְעֲךָ֔ אֵ֥ת כָּל־הָאֲרָצֹ֖ת הָאֵ֑ל וְהִתְבָּרֲכ֣וּ בְזַרְעֲךָ֔ כֹּ֖ל גּוֹיֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֕qeb 'ashsher-shshama֥ 'aberaha֖m bּeqoli֑y vayּishshemor֙ mishshemaretּi֔y mitzevota֖y chuqּota֥y vetorotaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)because Abraham obeyed My voice and kept My charge (mishmarti), My commandments, My statutes and My laws."

עֵ֕קֶב אֲשֶׁר־שָׁמַ֥ע אַבְרָהָ֖ם בְּקֹלִ֑י וַיִּשְׁמֹר֙ מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֔י מִצְוֺתַ֖י חֻקּוֹתַ֥י וְתוֹרֹתָֽי׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥shsheb yitzecha֖q bּigeraֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Isaac stayed in Gerar.

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יִצְחָ֖ק בִּגְרָֽר׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishshe'al֞u 'aneshshe֤y hamּaqom֙ le'ishshetּ֔o vayּo֖'mer 'acho֣tiy hi֑v kּi֤y yare'֙ le'mo֣r 'ishshetּi֔y pּen-yaֽharegu֜niy 'aneshshe֤y hamּaqom֙ 'al-ribeqa֔h kּiֽy-toba֥t mare'e֖h hiֽy'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife." He thought, "The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is beautiful."

וַֽיִּשְׁאֲל֞וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ לְאִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא כִּ֤י יָרֵא֙ לֵאמֹ֣ר אִשְׁתִּ֔י פֶּן־יַֽהַרְגֻ֜נִי אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ עַל־רִבְקָ֔ה כִּֽי־טוֹבַ֥ת מַרְאֶ֖ה הִֽיא׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּi֣y 'aֽreku-l֥o shsham֙ hayּami֔ym vayּashsheqe֗p 'abiyme֨leke֙ me֣leke pּelishshetּi֔ym bּe'a֖d hֽachalּ֑on vayּa֗re vehinּe֤h yitzechaq֙ metzache֔q 'e֖t ribeqa֥h 'ishshetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Isaac had been there a long time, Abimelech king of the Philistines looked down from a window and saw Isaac caressing (m'tzacheq) his wife Rebekah.

וַיְהִ֗י כִּ֣י אָֽרְכוּ־ל֥וֹ שָׁם֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַיַּשְׁקֵ֗ף אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים בְּעַ֖ד הַֽחַלּ֑וֹן וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה יִצְחָק֙ מְצַחֵ֔ק אֵ֖ת רִבְקָ֥ה אִשְׁתּֽוֹ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ 'abiyme֜leke leyitzecha֗q vayּo֨'mer֙ 'a֣ke hinּe֤h 'ishshetּeka֙ hi֔v ve'e֥yke 'ama֖retּa 'acho֣tiy hi֑v vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ yitzecha֔q kּi֣y 'ama֔retּiy pּen-'am֖ut 'aleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abimelech summoned Isaac and said, "She is really your wife! Why did you say, 'She is my sister'?" Isaac answered him, "I thought I might lose my life on account of her."

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ לְיִצְחָ֗ק וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אַ֣ךְ הִנֵּ֤ה אִשְׁתְּךָ֙ הִ֔וא וְאֵ֥יךְ אָמַ֖רְתָּ אֲחֹ֣תִי הִ֑וא וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ יִצְחָ֔ק כִּ֣י אָמַ֔רְתִּי פֶּן־אָמ֖וּת עָלֶֽיהָ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'abiyme֔leke mah-zּo֖'t 'ashsi֣yta lּa֑nu kּi֠me'at shshaka֞b 'acha֤d ha'am֙ 'et-'ishshetּe֔ka vehebe'ta֥ 'ale֖ynu 'ashshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the men might well have slept with your wife, and you would have brought guilt upon us."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ מַה־זֹּ֖את עָשִׂ֣יתָ לָּ֑נוּ כִּ֠מְעַט שָׁכַ֞ב אַחַ֤ד הָעָם֙ אֶת־אִשְׁתֶּ֔ךָ וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ עָלֵ֖ינוּ אָשָֽׁם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֣v 'abiyme֔leke 'et-kּal-ha'a֖m le'mo֑r hanּoge֜'a bּa'i֥yshsh hazּe֛h ube'ishshetּ֖o m֥ot yumaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abimelech gave orders to all the people: "Anyone who harms this man or his wife shall surely be put to death."

וַיְצַ֣ו אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר הַנֹּגֵ֜עַ בָּאִ֥ישׁ הַזֶּ֛ה וּבְאִשְׁתּ֖וֹ מ֥וֹת יוּמָֽת׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּizera֤ yitzechaq֙ bּa'a֣retz hahi֔v vayּimetza֛ bּashshּana֥h hahi֖v me'a֣h shshe'ari֑ym vֽayebarake֖hu yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac planted crops in that land and the same year reaped a hundredfold, because the LORD blessed him.

וַיִּזְרַ֤ע יִצְחָק֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיִּמְצָ֛א בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַהִ֖וא מֵאָ֣ה שְׁעָרִ֑ים וַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigedּa֖l ha'i֑yshsh vayּe֤leke haloke֙ vegade֔l 'a֥d kּiֽy-gada֖l me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The man became rich, and his wealth continued to grow until he became very wealthy.

וַיִּגְדַּ֖ל הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ וְגָדֵ֔ל עַ֥ד כִּֽי־גָדַ֖ל מְאֹֽד׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehiy-l֤o miqeneh-tzo'n֙ umiqene֣h baqa֔r va'abudּa֖h rabּa֑h vayeqane'֥u 'ot֖o pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines envied him.

וַֽיְהִי־ל֤וֹ מִקְנֵה־צֹאן֙ וּמִקְנֵ֣ה בָקָ֔ר וַעֲבֻדָּ֖ה רַבָּ֑ה וַיְקַנְא֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-habּe'ero֗t 'ashshe֤r chaֽperu֙ 'abede֣y 'abi֔yv bּiyme֖y 'aberaha֣m 'abi֑yv sitּem֣um pּelishshetּi֔ym vayemale'֖um 'apaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the time of his father Abraham, the Philistines stopped up, filling them with earth.

וְכָל־הַבְּאֵרֹ֗ת אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י אָבִ֔יו בִּימֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יו סִתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיְמַלְא֖וּם עָפָֽר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'abiyme֖leke 'el-yitzecha֑q le֚ke mֽe'imּa֔nu kּiֽy-'atzaֽmetּa-mimּe֖nּu me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Abimelech said to Isaac, "Move away from us; you have become too powerful for us."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־יִצְחָ֑ק לֵ֚ךְ מֵֽעִמָּ֔נוּ כִּֽי־עָצַֽמְתָּ־מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מְאֹֽד׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥leke mishshּa֖m yitzecha֑q vayּi֥chan bּenaֽchal-gּera֖r vayּe֥shsheb shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar, where he settled.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ מִשָּׁ֖ם יִצְחָ֑ק וַיִּ֥חַן בְּנַֽחַל־גְּרָ֖ר וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב שָֽׁם׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨shshab yitzecha֜q vayּachepּo֣r ׀ 'et-bּe'ero֣t hamּa֗yim 'ashshe֤r chaֽperu֙ bּiymey֙ 'aberaha֣m 'abi֔yv vayesatּem֣um pּelishshetּi֔ym 'achare֖y m֣ot 'aberaha֑m vayּiqera֤ lahen֙ shshem֔ot kּashshּemo֕t 'ashsher-qara֥ lahe֖n 'abiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.

וַיָּ֨שָׁב יִצְחָ֜ק וַיַּחְפֹּ֣ר ׀ אֶת־בְּאֵרֹ֣ת הַמַּ֗יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר חָֽפְרוּ֙ בִּימֵי֙ אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֔יו וַיְסַתְּמ֣וּם פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֖י מ֣וֹת אַבְרָהָ֑ם וַיִּקְרָ֤א לָהֶן֙ שֵׁמ֔וֹת כַּשֵּׁמֹ֕ת אֲשֶׁר־קָרָ֥א לָהֶ֖ן אָבִֽיו׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachepּer֥u 'abedeֽy-yitzecha֖q bּanּa֑chal vayּi֨metze'u-shsha֔m bּe'e֖r ma֥yim chayּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac's servants dug in the valley and discovered a well of fresh water there.

וַיַּחְפְּר֥וּ עַבְדֵֽי־יִצְחָ֖ק בַּנָּ֑חַל וַיִּ֨מְצְאוּ־שָׁ֔ם בְּאֵ֖ר מַ֥יִם חַיִּֽים׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּari֜ybu ro'e֣y gera֗r 'im-ro'e֥y yitzecha֛q le'mo֖r la֣nu hamּa֑yim vayּiqera֤ shsheֽm-habּe'er֙ 'e֔shseq kּi֥y hiֽte'ashsּeq֖u 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the herders of Gerar quarreled with those of Isaac and said, "The water is ours!" So he named the well Esek (Contention), because they disputed with him.

וַיָּרִ֜יבוּ רֹעֵ֣י גְרָ֗ר עִם־רֹעֵ֥י יִצְחָ֛ק לֵאמֹ֖ר לָ֣נוּ הַמָּ֑יִם וַיִּקְרָ֤א שֵֽׁם־הַבְּאֵר֙ עֵ֔שֶׂק כִּ֥י הִֽתְעַשְּׂק֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּachepּeru֙ bּe'e֣r 'ache֔ret vayּari֖ybu gּam-'ale֑yha vayּiqera֥ shshema֖hּ shsitenaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they dug another well, but they quarreled over that one also; so he named it Sitnah (Enmity).

וַֽיַּחְפְּרוּ֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וַיָּרִ֖יבוּ גַּם־עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמָ֖הּ שִׂטְנָֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'etּe֣q mishshּa֗m vayּachepּor֙ bּe'e֣r 'ache֔ret velo֥ rab֖u 'ale֑yha vayּiqera֤ shshemahּ֙ rechob֔ot vayּo֗'mer kּiֽy-'atּa֞h hirechi֧yb yehva֛h la֖nu upari֥ynu ba'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He moved on from there and dug another well, and no one quarreled over it. He named it Rehoboth (Broad Places), saying, "Now the LORD has made room for us, and we will flourish in the land."

וַיַּעְתֵּ֣ק מִשָּׁ֗ם וַיַּחְפֹּר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר אַחֶ֔רֶת וְלֹ֥א רָב֖וּ עָלֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֤א שְׁמָהּ֙ רְחֹב֔וֹת וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כִּֽי־עַתָּ֞ה הִרְחִ֧יב יְהוָ֛ה לָ֖נוּ וּפָרִ֥ינוּ בָאָֽרֶץ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'al mishshּa֖m bּe'e֥r shshaֽba'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)From there he went up to Beersheba.

וַיַּ֥עַל מִשָּׁ֖ם בְּאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּera֨ 'ela֤yv yehvah֙ bּalּa֣yelah hah֔u vayּo֕'mer 'anoki֕y 'elohe֖y 'aberaha֣m 'abi֑yka 'al-tּiyra'֙ kּiֽy-'itּeka֣ 'ano֔kiy ubeֽraketּi֨yka֙ vehirebּeyti֣y 'eֽt-zare'aka֔ bּa'ab֖ur 'aberaha֥m 'abedּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That night the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and will increase the number of your offspring for the sake of My servant Abraham."

וַיֵּרָ֨א אֵלָ֤יו יְהוָה֙ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֔וּא וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֕י אֱלֹהֵ֖י אַבְרָהָ֣ם אָבִ֑יךָ אַל־תִּירָא֙ כִּֽי־אִתְּךָ֣ אָנֹ֔כִי וּבֵֽרַכְתִּ֨יךָ֙ וְהִרְבֵּיתִ֣י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֔ בַּעֲב֖וּר אַבְרָהָ֥ם עַבְדִּֽי׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֧ben shsha֣m mizebּe֗cha vayּiqera'֙ bּeshshe֣m yehva֔h vayּet-shsha֖m 'ahol֑o vayּikeru-shsha֥m 'abedey-yitzecha֖q bּe'eֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac built an altar there and called on the name of the LORD. There he pitched his tent, and there his servants dug a well.

וַיִּ֧בֶן שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ וַיִּקְרָא֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה וַיֶּט־שָׁ֖ם אָהֳל֑וֹ וַיִּכְרוּ־שָׁ֥ם עַבְדֵי־יִצְחָ֖ק בְּאֵֽר׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'abiyme֕leke hala֥ke 'ela֖yv migּera֑r va'achuzּat֙ meֽre'e֔hu upiyko֖l shsar-tzeba'ֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile, Abimelech had come to him from Gerar, with Ahuzzath his personal adviser and Phicol the commander of his forces.

וַאֲבִימֶ֕לֶךְ הָלַ֥ךְ אֵלָ֖יו מִגְּרָ֑ר וַאֲחֻזַּת֙ מֵֽרֵעֵ֔הוּ וּפִיכֹ֖ל שַׂר־צְבָאֽוֹ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'alehem֙ yitzecha֔q madּ֖u'a bּa'te֣m 'ela֑y ve'atּem֙ shsene'te֣m 'oti֔y vatּeshshalּech֖uniy me'itּekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac asked them, "Why have you come to me, since you were hostile to me and sent me away?"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יִצְחָ֔ק מַדּ֖וּעַ בָּאתֶ֣ם אֵלָ֑י וְאַתֶּם֙ שְׂנֵאתֶ֣ם אֹתִ֔י וַתְּשַׁלְּח֖וּנִי מֵאִתְּכֶֽם׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֗u ra'֣o ra'iynu֮ kּiֽy-haya֣h yehva֣h ׀ 'imּake֒ vanּo֗'mer tּehi֨y na֥ 'ala֛h bּeynote֖ynu bּeyne֣ynu ubeyne֑ka venikereta֥h beri֖yt 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They answered, "We saw clearly that the LORD was with you; so we said, 'There ought to be a sworn agreement between us, between us and you. Let us make a treaty with you

וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ רָא֣וֹ רָאִינוּ֮ כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה יְהוָ֣ה ׀ עִמָּךְ֒ וַנֹּ֗אמֶר תְּהִ֨י נָ֥א אָלָ֛ה בֵּינוֹתֵ֖ינוּ בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ וּבֵינֶ֑ךָ וְנִכְרְתָ֥ה בְרִ֖ית עִמָּֽךְ׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-tּa'ashse֨h 'imּa֜nu ra'a֗h kּa'ashsher֙ lo֣ negaֽ'an֔uka veka'ashshe֨r 'ashsi֤ynu 'imּeka֙ raq-t֔ob vanּeshshalּeֽchaka֖ bּeshshal֑om 'atּa֥h 'atּa֖h bּer֥uke yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)that you will do us no harm, just as we did not harm you but always treated you well and sent you away peacefully. And now you are blessed by the LORD.'"

אִם־תַּעֲשֵׂ֨ה עִמָּ֜נוּ רָעָ֗ה כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ לֹ֣א נְגַֽעֲנ֔וּךָ וְכַאֲשֶׁ֨ר עָשִׂ֤ינוּ עִמְּךָ֙ רַק־ט֔וֹב וַנְּשַׁלֵּֽחֲךָ֖ בְּשָׁל֑וֹם אַתָּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה בְּר֥וּךְ יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'ashs lahem֙ mishshetּe֔h vayּo'kel֖u vayּishshetּֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac then made a feast for them, and they ate and drank.

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ לָהֶם֙ מִשְׁתֶּ֔ה וַיֹּאכְל֖וּ וַיִּשְׁתּֽוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֣ymu babּo֔qer vayּishshּabe'֖u 'i֣yshsh le'achi֑yv vayeshshalּeche֣m yitzecha֔q vayּelek֥u me'itּ֖o bּeshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early the next morning the men swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they went away peacefully.

וַיַּשְׁכִּ֣ימוּ בַבֹּ֔קֶר וַיִּשָּׁבְע֖וּ אִ֣ישׁ לְאָחִ֑יו וַיְשַׁלְּחֵ֣ם יִצְחָ֔ק וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ מֵאִתּ֖וֹ בְּשָׁלֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ bּayּ֣om hah֗u vayּabo֨'u֙ 'abede֣y yitzecha֔q vayּagּi֣du l֔o 'al-'od֥ot habּe'e֖r 'ashshe֣r chapa֑ru vayּo֥'meru l֖o matza֥'nu maֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That day Isaac's servants came and told him about the well they had dug. They said, "We've found water!"

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֗וּא וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ עַבְדֵ֣י יִצְחָ֔ק וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ ל֔וֹ עַל־אֹד֥וֹת הַבְּאֵ֖ר אֲשֶׁ֣ר חָפָ֑רוּ וַיֹּ֥אמְרוּ ל֖וֹ מָצָ֥אנוּ מָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֥ 'ota֖hּ shshibe'a֑h 'al-kּe֤n shshem-ha'iyr֙ bּe'e֣r shshe֔ba 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)He called it Shibah (Oath/Seven), and to this day the name of the town has been Beersheba.

וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֹתָ֖הּ שִׁבְעָ֑ה עַל־כֵּ֤ן שֵׁם־הָעִיר֙ בְּאֵ֣ר שֶׁ֔בַע עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y 'eshsav֙ bּen-'arebּa'i֣ym shshana֔h vayּiqּa֤ch 'ishshּah֙ 'et-yehudi֔yt bּat-bּe'eri֖y haֽchitּi֑y ve'et-bּa֣shsema֔t bּat-'eylo֖n hֽachitּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Esau was forty years old, he married Judith daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and also Basemath daughter of Elon the Hittite.

וַיְהִ֤י עֵשָׂו֙ בֶּן־אַרְבָּעִ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה וַיִּקַּ֤ח אִשָּׁה֙ אֶת־יְהוּדִ֔ית בַּת־בְּאֵרִ֖י הַֽחִתִּ֑י וְאֶת־בָּ֣שְׂמַ֔ת בַּת־אֵילֹ֖ן הַֽחִתִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiheye֖yna mo֣rat r֑ucha leyitzecha֖q uleribeqaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)They were a source of grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

וַתִּהְיֶ֖יןָ מֹ֣רַת ר֑וּחַ לְיִצְחָ֖ק וּלְרִבְקָֽה׃ס
