Chapter 27
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ kּiֽy-zaqe֣n yitzecha֔q vatּikehe֥yna 'eyna֖yv mere'o֑t vayּiqera֞ 'et-'eshsa֣v ׀ bּen֣o hagּado֗l vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ bּeni֔y vayּo֥'mer 'ela֖yv hinּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called for Esau his older son and said to him, "My son." "Here I am," he answered.

וַיְהִי֙ כִּֽי־זָקֵ֣ן יִצְחָ֔ק וַתִּכְהֶ֥יןָ עֵינָ֖יו מֵרְאֹ֑ת וַיִּקְרָ֞א אֶת־עֵשָׂ֣ו ׀ בְּנ֣וֹ הַגָּדֹ֗ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ בְּנִ֔י וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו הִנֵּֽנִי׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer hinּeh-na֖ zaqa֑netּiy lo֥ yada֖'etּiy y֥om motiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac said, "I am now an old man and don't know the day of my death.

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּה־נָ֖א זָקַ֑נְתִּי לֹ֥א יָדַ֖עְתִּי י֥וֹם מוֹתִֽי׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ shsa'-na֣ kele֔yka tּeleyeka֖ veqashshetּe֑ka vetze'֙ hashsּade֔h vetz֥udah lּi֖y tzydh tzaֽyid׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now then, get your equipment, your quiver and bow, and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.

וְעַתָּה֙ שָׂא־נָ֣א כֵלֶ֔יךָ תֶּלְיְךָ֖ וְקַשְׁתֶּ֑ךָ וְצֵא֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה וְצ֥וּדָה לִּ֖י צידה צָֽיִד׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ashseh-li֨y mate'amּi֜ym kּa'ashshe֥r 'aha֛betּiy vehabi֥y'ah lּi֖y ve'oke֑lah bּa'ab֛ur tּebarekeka֥ napeshshi֖y bּete֥rem 'amֽut׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Prepare me the kind of tasty food I like and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my blessing before I die."

וַעֲשֵׂה־לִ֨י מַטְעַמִּ֜ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אָהַ֛בְתִּי וְהָבִ֥יאָה לִּ֖י וְאֹכֵ֑לָה בַּעֲב֛וּר תְּבָרֶכְךָ֥ נַפְשִׁ֖י בְּטֶ֥רֶם אָמֽוּת׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): veribeqa֣h shshoma֔'at bּedabּe֣r yitzecha֔q 'el-'eshsa֖v bּen֑o vayּe֤leke 'eshsav֙ hashsּade֔h latz֥ud tza֖yid lehabiֽy'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Rebekah was listening as Isaac spoke to his son Esau. When Esau left for the open country to hunt game and bring it back,

וְרִבְקָ֣ה שֹׁמַ֔עַת בְּדַבֵּ֣ר יִצְחָ֔ק אֶל־עֵשָׂ֖ו בְּנ֑וֹ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ עֵשָׂו֙ הַשָּׂדֶ֔ה לָצ֥וּד צַ֖יִד לְהָבִֽיא׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): veribeqah֙ 'aֽmera֔h 'el-ya'aqo֥b bּena֖hּ le'mo֑r hinּe֤h shshama֨'etּiy֙ 'et-'abi֔yka medabּe֛r 'el-'eshsa֥v 'achi֖yka le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau,

וְרִבְקָה֙ אָֽמְרָ֔ה אֶל־יַעֲקֹ֥ב בְּנָ֖הּ לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁמַ֨עְתִּי֙ אֶת־אָבִ֔יךָ מְדַבֵּ֛ר אֶל־עֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִ֖יךָ לֵאמֹֽר׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): habi֨y'ah lּi֥y tza֛yid va'ashseh-li֥y mate'amּi֖ym ve'oke֑lah va'abarekeka֛h lipene֥y yehva֖h lipene֥y motiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.'

הָבִ֨יאָה לִּ֥י צַ֛יִד וַעֲשֵׂה־לִ֥י מַטְעַמִּ֖ים וְאֹכֵ֑לָה וַאֲבָרֶכְכָ֛ה לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י מוֹתִֽי׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֥h beni֖y shshema֣ bּeqoli֑y la'ashshe֥r 'ani֖y metzaua֥h 'otaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:

וְעַתָּ֥ה בְנִ֖י שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלִ֑י לַאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲנִ֖י מְצַוָּ֥ה אֹתָֽךְ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): leke-na'֙ 'el-hatzּo֔'n veqaֽch-li֣y mishshּa֗m shshene֛y gּedaye֥y 'izּi֖ym tobi֑ym ve'ֽe'eshse֨h 'ota֧m mate'amּi֛ym le'abi֖yka kּa'ashshe֥r 'aheֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats, so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.

לֶךְ־נָא֙ אֶל־הַצֹּ֔אן וְקַֽח־לִ֣י מִשָּׁ֗ם שְׁנֵ֛י גְּדָיֵ֥י עִזִּ֖ים טֹבִ֑ים וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂ֨ה אֹתָ֧ם מַטְעַמִּ֛ים לְאָבִ֖יךָ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אָהֵֽב׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehebe'ta֥ le'abi֖yka ve'aka֑l bּa'abu֛r 'ashshe֥r yebarekeka֖ lipene֥y motֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing before he dies."

וְהֵבֵאתָ֥ לְאָבִ֖יךָ וְאָכָ֑ל בַּעֲבֻ֛ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְבָרֶכְךָ֖ לִפְנֵ֥י מוֹתֽוֹ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer ya'aqo֔b 'el-ribeqa֖h 'imּ֑o he֣n 'eshsa֤v 'achiy֙ 'i֣yshsh shsa'i֔r ve'anoki֖y 'i֥yshsh chalaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, "But my brother Esau is a hairy man while I have smooth[1] skin.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֔ב אֶל־רִבְקָ֖ה אִמּ֑וֹ הֵ֣ן עֵשָׂ֤ו אָחִי֙ אִ֣ישׁ שָׂעִ֔ר וְאָנֹכִ֖י אִ֥ישׁ חָלָֽק׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ula֤y yemushshּe֨niy֙ 'abi֔y vehayi֥ytiy be'eyna֖yv kּimeta'etּe֑'a vehebe'ti֥y 'ala֛y qelala֖h velo֥ berakaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)What if my father touches me? I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse on myself rather than a blessing."

אוּלַ֤י יְמֻשֵּׁ֨נִי֙ אָבִ֔י וְהָיִ֥יתִי בְעֵינָ֖יו כִּמְתַעְתֵּ֑עַ וְהֵבֵאתִ֥י עָלַ֛י קְלָלָ֖ה וְלֹ֥א בְרָכָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer lo֙ 'imּ֔o 'ala֥y qilelateka֖ bּeni֑y 'a֛ke shshema֥ bּeqoli֖y vele֥ke qaֽch-liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His mother said to him, "My son, let the curse fall on me. Just do what I say; go and get them for me."

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ אִמּ֔וֹ עָלַ֥י קִלְלָתְךָ֖ בְּנִ֑י אַ֛ךְ שְׁמַ֥ע בְּקֹלִ֖י וְלֵ֥ךְ קַֽח־לִֽי׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke֙ vayּiqּa֔ch vayּabe֖ le'imּ֑o vatּa֤'ashs 'imּo֙ mate'amּi֔ym kּa'ashshe֖r 'ahe֥b 'abiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ וַיִּקַּ֔ח וַיָּבֵ֖א לְאִמּ֑וֹ וַתַּ֤עַשׂ אִמּוֹ֙ מַטְעַמִּ֔ים כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָהֵ֥ב אָבִֽיו׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqּa֣ch ri֠beqah 'et-bּigede֨y 'eshsa֜v bּena֤hּ hagּadol֙ hachamudo֔t 'ashshe֥r 'itּa֖hּ bּabּa֑yit vatּalebּe֥shsh 'eֽt-ya'aqo֖b bּena֥hּ haqּataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Rebekah took the best clothes of Esau her older son, which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob.

וַתִּקַּ֣ח רִ֠בְקָה אֶת־בִּגְדֵ֨י עֵשָׂ֜ו בְּנָ֤הּ הַגָּדֹל֙ הַחֲמֻדֹ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִתָּ֖הּ בַּבָּ֑יִת וַתַּלְבֵּ֥שׁ אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹ֖ב בְּנָ֥הּ הַקָּטָֽן׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֗t 'orot֙ gּedaye֣y haֽ'izּi֔ym hilebּi֖yshshah 'al-yada֑yv ve'a֖l cheleqa֥t tzaua'raֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.

וְאֵ֗ת עֹרֹת֙ גְּדָיֵ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֔ים הִלְבִּ֖ישָׁה עַל־יָדָ֑יו וְעַ֖ל חֶלְקַ֥ת צַוָּארָֽיו׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּitּe֧n 'et-hamּate'amּi֛ym ve'et-halּe֖chem 'ashshe֣r 'ashsa֑tah bּeya֖d ya'aqo֥b bּenaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

וַתִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־הַמַּטְעַמִּ֛ים וְאֶת־הַלֶּ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑תָה בְּיַ֖ד יַעֲקֹ֥ב בְּנָֽהּ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ 'el-'abi֖yv vayּo֣'mer 'abi֑y vayּo֣'mer hinּe֔nּiy mi֥y 'atּa֖h bּeniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He went to his father and said, "My father." "Yes, my son," he answered. "Who is it?"

וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־אָבִ֖יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אָבִ֑י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הִנֶּ֔נִּי מִ֥י אַתָּ֖ה בְּנִֽי׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer ya'aqo֜b 'el-'abi֗yv 'anokiy֙ 'eshsa֣v bּekore֔ka 'ashsi֕ytiy kּa'ashshe֥r dּibּa֖retּa 'ela֑y qֽum-na֣ shsheba֗h ve'akelah֙ mitzּeydi֔y bּa'ab֖ur tּebaraka֥nּiy napeshsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֜ב אֶל־אָבִ֗יו אָנֹכִי֙ עֵשָׂ֣ו בְּכֹרֶ֔ךָ עָשִׂ֕יתִי כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתָּ אֵלָ֑י קֽוּם־נָ֣א שְׁבָ֗ה וְאָכְלָה֙ מִצֵּידִ֔י בַּעֲב֖וּר תְּבָרֲכַ֥נִּי נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yitzechaq֙ 'el-bּen֔o mah-zּe֛h miha֥retּa limetzo֖ bּeni֑y vayּo֕'mer kּi֥y hiqera֛h yehva֥h 'elohe֖yka lepanaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac asked his son, "How did you find it so quickly, my son?" "The Lord your God gave me success," he replied.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יִצְחָק֙ אֶל־בְּנ֔וֹ מַה־זֶּ֛ה מִהַ֥רְתָּ לִמְצֹ֖א בְּנִ֑י וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כִּ֥י הִקְרָ֛ה יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶ֖יךָ לְפָנָֽי׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yitzechaq֙ 'eֽl-ya'aqo֔b gּeshshah-nּa֥ va'amuֽshsheka֖ bּeni֑y haֽ'atּa֥h ze֛h bּeni֥y 'eshsa֖v 'im-loֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near so I can touch you, my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יִצְחָק֙ אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֔ב גְּשָׁה־נָּ֥א וַאֲמֻֽשְׁךָ֖ בְּנִ֑י הַֽאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֛ה בְּנִ֥י עֵשָׂ֖ו אִם־לֹֽא׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֧shsh ya'aqo֛b 'el-yitzecha֥q 'abi֖yv vayemushshּe֑hu vayּo֗'mer haqּol֙ q֣ol ya'aqo֔b vehayּada֖yim yede֥y 'eshsaֽv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob went close to his father Isaac, who touched him and said, "The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau."

וַיִּגַּ֧שׁ יַעֲקֹ֛ב אֶל־יִצְחָ֥ק אָבִ֖יו וַיְמֻשֵּׁ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הַקֹּל֙ ק֣וֹל יַעֲקֹ֔ב וְהַיָּדַ֖יִם יְדֵ֥י עֵשָֽׂו׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): velo֣ hikּiyr֔o kּiֽy-hay֣u yada֗yv kּiyde֛y 'eshsa֥v 'achi֖yv shse'iro֑t vaֽyebarekeֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He did not recognise him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; so he proceeded to bless him.

וְלֹ֣א הִכִּיר֔וֹ כִּֽי־הָי֣וּ יָדָ֗יו כִּידֵ֛י עֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִ֖יו שְׂעִרֹ֑ת וַֽיְבָרְכֵֽהוּ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer 'atּa֥h ze֖h bּeni֣y 'eshsa֑v vayּo֖'mer 'aֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Are you really my son Esau?" he asked. "I am," he replied.

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה בְּנִ֣י עֵשָׂ֑ו וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָֽנִי׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer hagּi֤shshah lּiy֙ ve'oֽkelah֙ mitzּe֣yd bּeni֔y lema֥'an tּebaֽrekeka֖ napeshshi֑y vayּagּeshsh-lo֙ vayּo'ka֔l vayּa֧be l֦o ya֖yin vayּeֽshshetּe׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said, "My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing." Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הַגִּ֤שָׁה לִּי֙ וְאֹֽכְלָה֙ מִצֵּ֣יד בְּנִ֔י לְמַ֥עַן תְּבָֽרֶכְךָ֖ נַפְשִׁ֑י וַיַּגֶּשׁ־לוֹ֙ וַיֹּאכַ֔ל וַיָּ֧בֵא ל֦וֹ יַ֖יִן וַיֵּֽשְׁתְּ׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'ela֖yv yitzecha֣q 'abi֑yv gּeshshah-nּa֥ ushsheqah-lּi֖y bּeniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come here, my son, and kiss me."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו יִצְחָ֣ק אָבִ֑יו גְּשָׁה־נָּ֥א וּשְׁקָה־לִּ֖י בְּנִֽי׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּashsh֙ vayּishshּaq-l֔o vayּa֛rach 'et-re֥ycha bּegada֖yv vֽayebarake֑hu vayּo֗'mer re'eh֙ re֣ycha bּeni֔y kּere֣ycha shsade֔h 'ashshe֥r bּerak֖o yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he went to him and kissed him. When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes, he blessed[2] him and said, "Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the Lord has blessed.

וַיִּגַּשׁ֙ וַיִּשַּׁק־ל֔וֹ וַיָּ֛רַח אֶת־רֵ֥יחַ בְּגָדָ֖יו וַֽיְבָרֲכֵ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר רְאֵה֙ רֵ֣יחַ בְּנִ֔י כְּרֵ֣יחַ שָׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֵּרֲכ֖וֹ יְהוָֽה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyiֽtּen-leka֙ ha'elohi֔ym mitּal֙ hashshּama֔yim umishshemanּe֖y ha'a֑retz vero֥b dּaga֖n vetiyroֽshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness, an abundance of grain and new wine.

וְיִֽתֶּן־לְךָ֙ הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים מִטַּל֙ הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם וּמִשְׁמַנֵּ֖י הָאָ֑רֶץ וְרֹ֥ב דָּגָ֖ן וְתִירֹֽשׁ׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): yֽa'abed֣uka 'amּi֗ym vyshtchv veyiֽshshetּachav֤u leka֙ le'umּi֔ym heve֤h gebiyr֙ le'ache֔yka veyishshetּachau֥u leka֖ bּene֣y 'imּe֑ka 'orere֣yka 'ar֔ur uֽmebarake֖yka bּarֽuke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)May nations serve you and peoples bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who curse you be cursed and those who bless you be blessed."

יַֽעַבְד֣וּךָ עַמִּ֗ים וישתחו וְיִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֤וּ לְךָ֙ לְאֻמִּ֔ים הֱוֵ֤ה גְבִיר֙ לְאַחֶ֔יךָ וְיִשְׁתַּחֲוּ֥וּ לְךָ֖ בְּנֵ֣י אִמֶּ֑ךָ אֹרְרֶ֣יךָ אָר֔וּר וּֽמְבָרֲכֶ֖יךָ בָּרֽוּךְ׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּa'ashshe֨r kּilּa֣h yitzechaq֮ lebare֣ke 'eֽt-ya'aqob֒ vayehi֗y 'a֣ke yatzo֤ yatza'֙ ya'aqo֔b me'e֥t pּene֖y yitzecha֣q 'abi֑yv ve'eshsa֣v 'achi֔yv bּa֖ mitzּeydֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Isaac finished blessing him, and Jacob had scarcely left his father's presence, his brother Esau came in from hunting.

וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר כִּלָּ֣ה יִצְחָק֮ לְבָרֵ֣ךְ אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹב֒ וַיְהִ֗י אַ֣ךְ יָצֹ֤א יָצָא֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב מֵאֵ֥ת פְּנֵ֖י יִצְחָ֣ק אָבִ֑יו וְעֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֔יו בָּ֖א מִצֵּידֽוֹ׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'ashs gּam-hu'֙ mate'amּi֔ym vayּabe֖ le'abi֑yv vayּo֣'mer le'abi֗yv yaqu֤m 'abiy֙ veyo'kal֙ mitzּe֣yd bּen֔o bּa'ab֖ur tּebaraka֥nּiy napeshsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He too prepared some tasty food and brought it to his father. Then he said to him, "My father, please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your blessing."

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ גַּם־הוּא֙ מַטְעַמִּ֔ים וַיָּבֵ֖א לְאָבִ֑יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאָבִ֗יו יָקֻ֤ם אָבִי֙ וְיֹאכַל֙ מִצֵּ֣יד בְּנ֔וֹ בַּעֲב֖וּר תְּבָרֲכַ֥נִּי נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer l֛o yitzecha֥q 'abi֖yv miy-'a֑tּah vayּo֕'mer 'ani֛y bּineka֥ bekoֽreka֖ 'eshsaֽv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His father Isaac asked him, "Who are you?" "I am your son," he answered, "your firstborn, Esau."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֛וֹ יִצְחָ֥ק אָבִ֖יו מִי־אָ֑תָּה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אֲנִ֛י בִּנְךָ֥ בְכֹֽרְךָ֖ עֵשָֽׂו׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּechera֨d yitzecha֣q charadah֮ gּedola֣h 'ad-me'od֒ vayּo֡'mer miֽy-'ep֡o h֣u hatzּaֽd-tzayid֩ vayּa֨be li֜y va'oka֥l mikּo֛l bּete֥rem tּab֖o va'abarake֑hu gּam-bּar֖uke yiheyeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac trembled violently and said, "Who was it, then, that hunted game and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came and I blessed him, and indeed he will be blessed!"

וַיֶּחֱרַ֨ד יִצְחָ֣ק חֲרָדָה֮ גְּדֹלָ֣ה עַד־מְאֹד֒ וַיֹּ֡אמֶר מִֽי־אֵפ֡וֹא ה֣וּא הַצָּֽד־צַיִד֩ וַיָּ֨בֵא לִ֜י וָאֹכַ֥ל מִכֹּ֛ל בְּטֶ֥רֶם תָּב֖וֹא וָאֲבָרֲכֵ֑הוּ גַּם־בָּר֖וּךְ יִהְיֶֽה׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּishshemo֤'a 'eshsav֙ 'et-dּibere֣y 'abi֔yv vayּitze'a֣q tze'aqa֔h gּedola֥h umara֖h 'ad-me'o֑d vayּo֣'mer le'abi֔yv bּarake֥niy gam-'a֖niy 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Esau heard his father's words, he burst out with a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, "Bless me, me too, my father!"

כִּשְׁמֹ֤עַ עֵשָׂו֙ אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֣י אָבִ֔יו וַיִּצְעַ֣ק צְעָקָ֔ה גְּדֹלָ֥ה וּמָרָ֖ה עַד־מְאֹ֑ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאָבִ֔יו בָּרֲכֵ֥נִי גַם־אָ֖נִי אָבִֽי׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer bּa֥ 'achi֖yka bּemirema֑h vayּiqּa֖ch bּirekateֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But he said, "Your brother came deceitfully and took your blessing."

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּ֥א אָחִ֖יךָ בְּמִרְמָ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֖ח בִּרְכָתֶֽךָ׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֡'mer hakiy֩ qara֨ shshem֜o ya'aqo֗b vֽayּa'eqebe֨niy֙ ze֣h pa'ama֔yim 'et-bּekorati֣y laqa֔ch vehinּe֥h 'atּa֖h laqa֣ch bּirekati֑y vayּo'ma֕r halo'-'atza֥letּa lּi֖y bּerakaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Esau said, "Isn't he rightly named Jacob? This is the second time he has taken advantage of me: He took my birthright, and now he's taken my blessing!" Then he asked, "Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?"

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר הֲכִי֩ קָרָ֨א שְׁמ֜וֹ יַעֲקֹ֗ב וַֽיַּעְקְבֵ֨נִי֙ זֶ֣ה פַעֲמַ֔יִם אֶת־בְּכֹרָתִ֣י לָקָ֔ח וְהִנֵּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה לָקַ֣ח בִּרְכָתִ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הֲלֹא־אָצַ֥לְתָּ לִּ֖י בְּרָכָֽה׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'an yitzecha֜q vayּo֣'mer le'eshsa֗v he֣n gּebi֞yr shsametּi֥yv lake֙ ve'et-kּal-'echa֗yv nata֤tּiy lo֙ la'abadi֔ym vedaga֥n vetiyro֖shsh semaketּi֑yv uleka֣h 'ep֔o ma֥h 'ֽe'eshse֖h bּeniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac answered Esau, "I have made him lord over you and have made all his relatives his servants, and I have sustained him with grain and new wine. So what can I possibly do for you, my son?"

וַיַּ֨עַן יִצְחָ֜ק וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְעֵשָׂ֗ו הֵ֣ן גְּבִ֞יר שַׂמְתִּ֥יו לָךְ֙ וְאֶת־כָּל־אֶחָ֗יו נָתַ֤תִּי לוֹ֙ לַעֲבָדִ֔ים וְדָגָ֥ן וְתִירֹ֖שׁ סְמַכְתִּ֑יו וּלְכָ֣ה אֵפ֔וֹא מָ֥ה אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה בְּנִֽי׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'eshsa֜v 'el-'abi֗yv haֽberaka֨h 'acha֤t hiֽv'-leka֙ 'abi֔y bּarake֥niy gam-'a֖niy 'abi֑y vayּishsּa֥ 'eshsa֛v qol֖o vayּeֽbekּe׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר עֵשָׂ֜ו אֶל־אָבִ֗יו הַֽבְרָכָ֨ה אַחַ֤ת הִֽוא־לְךָ֙ אָבִ֔י בָּרֲכֵ֥נִי גַם־אָ֖נִי אָבִ֑י וַיִּשָּׂ֥א עֵשָׂ֛ו קֹל֖וֹ וַיֵּֽבְךְּ׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛'an yitzecha֥q 'abi֖yv vayּo֣'mer 'ela֑yv hinּe֞h mishshemanּe֤y ha'a֨retz֙ yiheye֣h mֽoshshabe֔ka umitּa֥l hashshּama֖yim me'aֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His father Isaac answered him, "Your dwelling will be away from the earth's richness, away from the dew of heaven above.

וַיַּ֛עַן יִצְחָ֥ק אָבִ֖יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֑יו הִנֵּ֞ה מִשְׁמַנֵּ֤י הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה מֽוֹשָׁבֶ֔ךָ וּמִטַּ֥ל הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם מֵעָֽל׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-charebּeka֣ tiֽcheye֔h ve'et-'achi֖yka tּa'abo֑d vehayah֙ kּa'ashshe֣r tּari֔yd uparaqetּa֥ 'ulּ֖o me'a֥l tzaua'reֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)You will live by the sword and you will serve your brother. But when you grow restless, you will throw his yoke from off your neck."

וְעַל־חַרְבְּךָ֣ תִֽחְיֶ֔ה וְאֶת־אָחִ֖יךָ תַּעֲבֹ֑ד וְהָיָה֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר תָּרִ֔יד וּפָרַקְתָּ֥ עֻלּ֖וֹ מֵעַ֥ל צַוָּארֶֽךָ׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishseto֤m 'eshsav֙ 'eֽt-ya'aqo֔b 'al-ha֨bּeraka֔h 'ashshe֥r bּerak֖o 'abi֑yv vayּo֨'mer 'eshsa֜v bּelibּ֗o yiqerebu֙ yemey֙ 'e֣bel 'abi֔y ve'aֽharega֖h 'et-ya'aqo֥b 'achiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."

וַיִּשְׂטֹ֤ם עֵשָׂו֙ אֶֽת־יַעֲקֹ֔ב עַל־הַ֨בְּרָכָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בֵּרֲכ֖וֹ אָבִ֑יו וַיֹּ֨אמֶר עֵשָׂ֜ו בְּלִבּ֗וֹ יִקְרְבוּ֙ יְמֵי֙ אֵ֣בֶל אָבִ֔י וְאַֽהַרְגָ֖ה אֶת־יַעֲקֹ֥ב אָחִֽי׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֣d leribeqa֔h 'et-dּibere֥y 'eshsa֖v bּena֣hּ hagּado֑l vatּishshela֞ch vatּiqera֤ leya'aqob֙ bּena֣hּ haqּata֔n vatּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv hinּeh֙ 'eshsa֣v 'achi֔yka mitenache֥m leka֖ leharegeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Rebekah was told what her older son Esau had said, she sent for her younger son Jacob and said to him, "Your brother Esau is planning to avenge himself by killing you.

וַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְרִבְקָ֔ה אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י עֵשָׂ֖ו בְּנָ֣הּ הַגָּדֹ֑ל וַתִּשְׁלַ֞ח וַתִּקְרָ֤א לְיַעֲקֹב֙ בְּנָ֣הּ הַקָּטָ֔ן וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו הִנֵּה֙ עֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֔יךָ מִתְנַחֵ֥ם לְךָ֖ לְהָרְגֶֽךָ׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֥h beni֖y shshema֣ bּeqoli֑y veq֧um bּerach-leka֛ 'el-laba֥n 'achi֖y charaֽnah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now then, my son, do what I say: Flee at once to my brother Laban in Harran.

וְעַתָּ֥ה בְנִ֖י שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלִ֑י וְק֧וּם בְּרַח־לְךָ֛ אֶל־לָבָ֥ן אָחִ֖י חָרָֽנָה׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyashshabetּa֥ 'imּ֖o yami֣ym 'achadi֑ym 'a֥d 'ashsher-tּashsh֖ub chama֥t 'achiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Stay with him for a while until your brother's fury subsides.

וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֥ עִמּ֖וֹ יָמִ֣ים אֲחָדִ֑ים עַ֥ד אֲשֶׁר־תָּשׁ֖וּב חֲמַ֥ת אָחִֽיךָ׃

45
Phonetic (Hebrew): ad-shsh֨ub 'ap-'achi֜yka mimּeka֗ veshshakach֙ 'e֣t 'ashsher-'ashsi֣yta lּ֔o veshshalachetּi֖y uleqachetּi֣yka mishshּa֑m lama֥h 'eshshekּa֛l gּam-shsheneyke֖m y֥om 'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When your brother is no longer angry with you and forgets what you did to him, I'll send word for you to come back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?"

עַד־שׁ֨וּב אַף־אָחִ֜יךָ מִמְּךָ֗ וְשָׁכַח֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ וְשָׁלַחְתִּ֖י וּלְקַחְתִּ֣יךָ מִשָּׁ֑ם לָמָ֥ה אֶשְׁכַּ֛ל גַּם־שְׁנֵיכֶ֖ם י֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃

46
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer ribeqah֙ 'el-yitzecha֔q qa֣tzetּiy bechayּa֔y mipּene֖y bּen֣ot che֑t 'im-loqe֣cha ya֠'aqob 'ishshּa֨h mibּenֽot-che֤t kּa'e֨lּeh֙ mibּen֣ot ha'a֔retz la֥mּah lּi֖y chayּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I'm disgusted with living because of these Hittite women. If Jacob takes a wife from among the women of this land, from Hittite women like these, my life will not be worth living."

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רִבְקָה֙ אֶל־יִצְחָ֔ק קַ֣צְתִּי בְחַיַּ֔י מִפְּנֵ֖י בְּנ֣וֹת חֵ֑ת אִם־לֹקֵ֣חַ יַ֠עֲקֹב אִשָּׁ֨ה מִבְּנֽוֹת־חֵ֤ת כָּאֵ֨לֶּה֙ מִבְּנ֣וֹת הָאָ֔רֶץ לָ֥מָּה לִּ֖י חַיִּֽים׃
