Chapter 30
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֣re rache֗l kּi֣y lo֤ yaֽledah֙ leya'aqo֔b vatּeqanּe֥ rache֖l bּa'achota֑hּ vatּo֤'mer 'eֽl-ya'aqob֙ haֽbah-lּi֣y bani֔ym ve'im-'a֖yin meta֥h 'anoֽkiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Rachel saw that she was not bearing Jacob any children, she became jealous of her sister. So she said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I'll die!"

וַתֵּ֣רֶא רָחֵ֗ל כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָֽלְדָה֙ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב וַתְּקַנֵּ֥א רָחֵ֖ל בַּאֲחֹתָ֑הּ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹב֙ הָֽבָה־לִּ֣י בָנִ֔ים וְאִם־אַ֖יִן מֵתָ֥ה אָנֹֽכִי׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽchar-'a֥p ya'aqo֖b bּerache֑l vayּo֗'mer hata֤chat 'elohiym֙ 'ano֔kiy 'ashsher-mana֥ mimּe֖ke pּeriy-baֽten׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob became angry with her and said, "Am I in the place of God, who has kept you from having children?"

וַיִּֽחַר־אַ֥ף יַעֲקֹ֖ב בְּרָחֵ֑ל וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲתַ֤חַת אֱלֹהִים֙ אָנֹ֔כִי אֲשֶׁר־מָנַ֥ע מִמֵּ֖ךְ פְּרִי־בָֽטֶן׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֕'mer hinּe֛h 'amati֥y bileha֖h bּo֣ 'ele֑yha veteled֙ 'al-bּirekּa֔y ve'ibּane֥h gam-'anoki֖y mimּeֽnּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then she said, "Here is Bilhah, my servant. Sleep with her so that she can bear children for me and I too can build a family through her."

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֛ה אֲמָתִ֥י בִלְהָ֖ה בֹּ֣א אֵלֶ֑יהָ וְתֵלֵד֙ עַל־בִּרְכַּ֔י וְאִבָּנֶ֥ה גַם־אָנֹכִ֖י מִמֶּֽנָּה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּitּen-l֛o 'et-bּileha֥h shshipechata֖hּ le'ishshּa֑h vayּabo֥ 'ele֖yha ya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she gave him her servant Bilhah as a wife. Jacob slept with her,

וַתִּתֶּן־ל֛וֹ אֶת־בִּלְהָ֥ה שִׁפְחָתָ֖הּ לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ יַעֲקֹֽב׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣har bּileha֔h vatּe֥led leya'aqo֖b bּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and she became pregnant and bore him a son.

וַתַּ֣הַר בִּלְהָ֔ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב בֵּֽן׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer rachel֙ dּana֣nּiy 'elohi֔ym vegam֙ shshama֣ bּeqoli֔y vayּitּen-li֖y bּe֑n 'al-kּe֛n qare'a֥h shshem֖o dּaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Rachel said, "God has vindicated me[1]; He has listened to my plea and given me a son." Because of this she named him Dan.

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ דָּנַ֣נִּי אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְגַם֙ שָׁמַ֣ע בְּקֹלִ֔י וַיִּתֶּן־לִ֖י בֵּ֑ן עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרְאָ֥ה שְׁמ֖וֹ דָּֽן׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣har '֔od vatּe֕led bּileha֖h shshipecha֣t rache֑l bּe֥n shsheni֖y leya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Rachel's servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.

וַתַּ֣הַר ע֔וֹד וַתֵּ֕לֶד בִּלְהָ֖ה שִׁפְחַ֣ת רָחֵ֑ל בֵּ֥ן שֵׁנִ֖י לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer rache֗l napetּule֨y 'elohi֧ym ׀ nipetּa֛letּiy 'im-'achoti֖y gּam-yako֑letּiy vatּiqera֥ shshem֖o napetּaliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Rachel said, "I have had a great struggle[2] with my sister, and I have won." So she named him Naphtali.

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר רָחֵ֗ל נַפְתּוּלֵ֨י אֱלֹהִ֧ים ׀ נִפְתַּ֛לְתִּי עִם־אֲחֹתִ֖י גַּם־יָכֹ֑לְתִּי וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ נַפְתָּלִֽי׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֣re le'a֔h kּi֥y 'ameda֖h milּe֑det vatּiqּach֙ 'et-zilepּa֣h shshipechata֔hּ vatּitּe֥n 'ota֛hּ leya'aqo֖b le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.

וַתֵּ֣רֶא לֵאָ֔ה כִּ֥י עָמְדָ֖ה מִלֶּ֑דֶת וַתִּקַּח֙ אֶת־זִלְפָּ֣ה שִׁפְחָתָ֔הּ וַתִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֛הּ לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֗led zilepּa֛h shshipecha֥t le'a֖h leya'aqo֥b bּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.

וַתֵּ֗לֶד זִלְפָּ֛ה שִׁפְחַ֥ת לֵאָ֖ה לְיַעֲקֹ֥ב בֵּֽן׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֥'mer le'a֖h bgd bּa֣ ga֑d vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o gּaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Leah said, "What good fortune[3]!" So she named him Gad.

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר לֵאָ֖ה בגד בָּ֣א גָ֑ד וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ גָּֽד׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֗led zilepּah֙ shshipecha֣t le'a֔h bּe֥n shsheni֖y leya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Leah's servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.

וַתֵּ֗לֶד זִלְפָּה֙ שִׁפְחַ֣ת לֵאָ֔ה בֵּ֥ן שֵׁנִ֖י לְיַעֲקֹֽב׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer le'a֔h bּe'ashsheri֕y kּi֥y 'ishshּer֖uniy bּan֑ot vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o 'ashsheֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Leah said, "How happy I am! The women will call me happy[4]." So she named him Asher.

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֔ה בְּאָשְׁרִ֕י כִּ֥י אִשְּׁר֖וּנִי בָּנ֑וֹת וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ אָשֵֽׁר׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke re'ube֜n bּiyme֣y qetziyr-chitּi֗ym vayּimetza֤ dֽuda'iym֙ bּashsּade֔h vayּabe֣ 'ota֔m 'el-le'a֖h 'imּ֑o vatּo֤'mer rachel֙ 'el-le'a֔h tּeniy-na֣ li֔y midּuda'e֖y bּeneֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)During wheat harvest, Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrakes[5], which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, "Please give me some of your son's mandrakes."

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֜ן בִּימֵ֣י קְצִיר־חִטִּ֗ים וַיִּמְצָ֤א דֽוּדָאִים֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיָּבֵ֣א אֹתָ֔ם אֶל־לֵאָ֖ה אִמּ֑וֹ וַתֹּ֤אמֶר רָחֵל֙ אֶל־לֵאָ֔ה תְּנִי־נָ֣א לִ֔י מִדּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנֵֽךְ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer la֗hּ hame'at֙ qachetּe֣ke 'et-'iyshshi֔y velaqa֕chat gּa֥m 'et-dּuda'e֖y bּeni֑y vatּo֣'mer rache֗l laken֙ yishshekּa֤b 'imּake֙ halּa֔yelah tּa֖chat dּuda'e֥y beneֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But she said to her, "Wasn't it enough that you took away my husband? Will you take my son's mandrakes too?" "Very well," Rachel said, "he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son's mandrakes."

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לָ֗הּ הַמְעַט֙ קַחְתֵּ֣ךְ אֶת־אִישִׁ֔י וְלָקַ֕חַת גַּ֥ם אֶת־דּוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַתֹּ֣אמֶר רָחֵ֗ל לָכֵן֙ יִשְׁכַּ֤ב עִמָּךְ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה תַּ֖חַת דּוּדָאֵ֥י בְנֵֽךְ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ ya'aqo֣b min-hashsּadeh֮ bּa'ereb֒ vatּetze֨ le'a֜h liqera't֗o vatּo֨'mer֙ 'ela֣y tּab֔o kּi֚y shsako֣r shsekaretּi֔yka bּeduda'e֖y bּeni֑y vayּishshekּa֥b 'imּa֖hּ bּalּa֥yelah hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. "You must sleep with me," she said. "I have hired you with my son's mandrakes." So he slept with her that night.

וַיָּבֹ֨א יַעֲקֹ֣ב מִן־הַשָּׂדֶה֮ בָּעֶרֶב֒ וַתֵּצֵ֨א לֵאָ֜ה לִקְרָאת֗וֹ וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֵלַ֣י תָּב֔וֹא כִּ֚י שָׂכֹ֣ר שְׂכַרְתִּ֔יךָ בְּדוּדָאֵ֖י בְּנִ֑י וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב עִמָּ֖הּ בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הֽוּא׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֥ 'elohi֖ym 'el-le'a֑h vatּa֛har vatּe֥led leya'aqo֖b bּe֥n chamiyshshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God listened to Leah, and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־לֵאָ֑ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב בֵּ֥ן חֲמִישִֽׁי׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer le'a֗h nata֤n 'elohiym֙ shsekari֔y 'ashsher-nata֥tּiy shshipechati֖y le'iyshshi֑y vatּiqera֥ shshem֖o yishsּashkaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Leah said, "God has rewarded me[6] for giving my servant to my husband." So she named him Issachar.

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֗ה נָתַ֤ן אֱלֹהִים֙ שְׂכָרִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥תִּי שִׁפְחָתִ֖י לְאִישִׁ֑י וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשָּׂשכָֽר׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֤har 'od֙ le'a֔h vatּe֥led bּen-shshishshּi֖y lּeya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son.

וַתַּ֤הַר עוֹד֙ לֵאָ֔ה וַתֵּ֥לֶד בֵּן־שִׁשִּׁ֖י לְּיַעֲקֹֽב׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣'mer le'a֗h zebada֨niy 'elohi֥ym ׀ 'otiy֮ ze֣bed tob֒ hapּa֨'am֙ yizebּele֣niy 'iyshshi֔y kּiֽy-yala֥detּiy l֖o shshishshּa֣h bani֑ym vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o zebulֽun׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Leah said, "God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honour[7], because I have borne him six sons." So she named him Zebulun.

וַתֹּ֣אמֶר לֵאָ֗ה זְבָדַ֨נִי אֱלֹהִ֥ים ׀ אֹתִי֮ זֵ֣בֶד טוֹב֒ הַפַּ֨עַם֙ יִזְבְּלֵ֣נִי אִישִׁ֔י כִּֽי־יָלַ֥דְתִּי ל֖וֹ שִׁשָּׁ֣ה בָנִ֑ים וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ זְבֻלֽוּן׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'acha֖r ya֣ledah bּa֑t vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshema֖hּ dּiynaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.

וְאַחַ֖ר יָ֣לְדָה בַּ֑ת וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמָ֖הּ דִּינָֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּizekּo֥r 'elohi֖ym 'et-rache֑l vayּishshema֤ 'ele֨yha֙ 'elohi֔ym vayּipetּa֖ch 'et-rachemaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God remembered Rachel; He listened to her and enabled her to conceive.

וַיִּזְכֹּ֥ר אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־רָחֵ֑ל וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּפְתַּ֖ח אֶת־רַחְמָֽהּ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֖har vatּe֣led bּe֑n vatּo֕'mer 'asa֥p 'elohi֖ym 'et-cherepּatiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my disgrace."

וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אָסַ֥ף אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־חֶרְפָּתִֽי׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqera֧ 'et-shshem֛o yose֖p le'mo֑r yose֧p yehva֛h li֖y bּe֥n 'acheֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She named him Joseph[8], and said, "May the Lord add to me another son."

וַתִּקְרָ֧א אֶת־שְׁמ֛וֹ יוֹסֵ֖ף לֵאמֹ֑ר יֹסֵ֧ף יְהוָ֛ה לִ֖י בֵּ֥ן אַחֵֽר׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּa'ashshe֛r yaleda֥h rache֖l 'et-yose֑p vayּo֤'mer ya'aqob֙ 'el-laba֔n shshalּeche֨niy֙ ve'e֣leka֔h 'el-meqomi֖y ule'aretziֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, "Send me on my way so I can go back to my own homeland.

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר יָלְדָ֥ה רָחֵ֖ל אֶת־יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־לָבָ֔ן שַׁלְּחֵ֨נִי֙ וְאֵ֣לְכָ֔ה אֶל־מְקוֹמִ֖י וּלְאַרְצִֽי׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): tּena֞h 'et-nashsha֣y ve'et-yelada֗y 'ashshe֨r 'aba֧detּiy 'oֽteka֛ bּahe֖n ve'ele֑kah kּi֚y 'atּa֣h yada֔'etּa 'et-'abodati֖y 'ashshe֥r 'abadetּiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you, and I will be on my way. You know how much work I've done for you."

תְּנָ֞ה אֶת־נָשַׁ֣י וְאֶת־יְלָדַ֗י אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָבַ֧דְתִּי אֹֽתְךָ֛ בָּהֵ֖ן וְאֵלֵ֑כָה כִּ֚י אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֶת־עֲבֹדָתִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲבַדְתִּֽיךָ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elayv֙ laba֔n 'im-na֛ matza֥'tiy che֖n bּe'eyne֑yka nicha֕shshetּiy vayebarake֥niy yehva֖h bּigelaleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Laban said to him, "If I have found favour in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by divination[9] that the Lord has blessed me because of you."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ לָבָ֔ן אִם־נָ֛א מָצָ֥אתִי חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ נִחַ֕שְׁתִּי וַיְבָרֲכֵ֥נִי יְהוָ֖ה בִּגְלָלֶֽךָ׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'ma֑r naqeba֧h shsekareka֛ 'ala֖y ve'etּeֽnah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He added, "Name your wages, and I will pay them."

וַיֹּאמַ֑ר נָקְבָ֧ה שְׂכָרְךָ֛ עָלַ֖י וְאֶתֵּֽנָה׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ela֔yv 'atּa֣h yada֔'etּa 'e֖t 'ashshe֣r 'abadetּi֑yka ve'e֛t 'ashsher-haya֥h miqeneka֖ 'itּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob said to him, "You know how I have worked for you and how your livestock has fared under my care.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֔יו אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתָּ אֵ֖ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲבַדְתִּ֑יךָ וְאֵ֛ת אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֥ה מִקְנְךָ֖ אִתִּֽי׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֡y me'at֩ 'ashsher-haya֨h leka֤ lepanay֙ vayּipero֣tz laro֔b vayeba֧reke yehva֛h 'oteka֖ lerageli֑y ve'atּa֗h mata֛y 'ֽe'eshse֥h gam-'anoki֖y lebeytiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been[10]. But now, when may I do something for my own household?"

כִּ֡י מְעַט֩ אֲשֶׁר־הָיָ֨ה לְךָ֤ לְפָנַי֙ וַיִּפְרֹ֣ץ לָרֹ֔ב וַיְבָ֧רֶךְ יְהוָ֛ה אֹתְךָ֖ לְרַגְלִ֑י וְעַתָּ֗ה מָתַ֛י אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה גַם־אָנֹכִ֖י לְבֵיתִֽי׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer ma֣h 'etּen-la֑ke vayּo֤'mer ya'aqob֙ lo'-titּen-li֣y me'֔umah 'im-tּֽa'ashseh-lּiy֙ hadּaba֣r hazּe֔h 'ashsh֛ubah 'ere'e֥h tzoֽ'neka֖ 'eshshemoֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"What shall I give you?" he asked. "Don't give me anything," Jacob replied. "But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them:

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מָ֣ה אֶתֶּן־לָ֑ךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ לֹא־תִתֶּן־לִ֣י מְא֔וּמָה אִם־תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־לִּי֙ הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה אָשׁ֛וּבָה אֶרְעֶ֥ה צֹֽאנְךָ֖ אֶשְׁמֹֽר׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): ֽe'ebo֨r bּekal-tzoֽ'neka֜ hayּ֗om hase֨r mishshּa֜m kּal-shse֣h ׀ naqo֣d vetal֗u vekal-shseh-chum֙ bּakּeshsabi֔ym vetal֥u venaqo֖d bּa'izּi֑ym vehaya֖h shsekariֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted[11] sheep, every dark-coloured lamb and every spotted or speckled goat. They will be my wages.

אֶֽעֱבֹ֨ר בְּכָל־צֹֽאנְךָ֜ הַיּ֗וֹם הָסֵ֨ר מִשָּׁ֜ם כָּל־שֶׂ֣ה ׀ נָקֹ֣ד וְטָל֗וּא וְכָל־שֶׂה־חוּם֙ בַּכְּשָׂבִ֔ים וְטָל֥וּא וְנָקֹ֖ד בָּעִזִּ֑ים וְהָיָ֖ה שְׂכָרִֽי׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aֽnetah-bּi֤y tzideqatiy֙ bּey֣om macha֔r kּiֽy-tab֥o 'al-shsekari֖y lepane֑yka kּo֣l 'ashsher-'eynenּu֩ naqo֨d vetal֜u bּaֽ'izּi֗ym vechum֙ bּakּeshsabi֔ym gּan֥ub h֖u 'itּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any sheep that is not dark-coloured, will be considered stolen."

וְעָֽנְתָה־בִּ֤י צִדְקָתִי֙ בְּי֣וֹם מָחָ֔ר כִּֽי־תָב֥וֹא עַל־שְׂכָרִ֖י לְפָנֶ֑יךָ כֹּ֣ל אֲשֶׁר־אֵינֶנּוּ֩ נָקֹ֨ד וְטָל֜וּא בָּֽעִזִּ֗ים וְחוּם֙ בַּכְּשָׂבִ֔ים גָּנ֥וּב ה֖וּא אִתִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer laba֖n he֑n l֖u yehi֥y kidebareֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Agreed," said Laban. "Let it be as you have said."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר לָבָ֖ן הֵ֑ן ל֖וּ יְהִ֥י כִדְבָרֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣sar bּayּom֩ hah֨u 'et-hatּeyashshi֜ym haֽ'aqudּi֣ym vehatּelu'i֗ym ve'e֤t kּal-hֽa'izּiym֙ hanּequdּ֣ot vehatּelu'o֔t kּo֤l 'ashsher-laban֙ bּ֔o vekal-ch֖um bּakּeshsabi֑ym vayּitּe֖n bּeyad-bּanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-coloured sheep, and he placed them in the care of his sons.

וַיָּ֣סַר בַּיּוֹם֩ הַה֨וּא אֶת־הַתְּיָשִׁ֜ים הָֽעֲקֻדִּ֣ים וְהַטְּלֻאִ֗ים וְאֵ֤ת כָּל־הָֽעִזִּים֙ הַנְּקֻדּ֣וֹת וְהַטְּלֻאֹ֔ת כֹּ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־לָבָן֙ בּ֔וֹ וְכָל־ח֖וּם בַּכְּשָׂבִ֑ים וַיִּתֵּ֖ן בְּיַד־בָּנָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֗shsem dּe֚reke shshelo֣shshet yami֔ym bּeyn֖o ube֣yn ya'aqo֑b veya'aqo֗b ro'e֛h 'et-tzo֥'n laba֖n hanּotaroֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he put a three-day journey between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban's flocks.

וַיָּ֗שֶׂם דֶּ֚רֶךְ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֔ים בֵּינ֖וֹ וּבֵ֣ין יַעֲקֹ֑ב וְיַעֲקֹ֗ב רֹעֶ֛ה אֶת־צֹ֥אן לָבָ֖ן הַנּוֹתָרֹֽת׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽqּaֽch-l֣o ya'aqo֗b maqּa֥l libene֛h la֖ch vel֣uz ve'erem֑on vayepatzּe֤l bּahen֙ pּetzal֣ot leban֔ot macheshsop֙ halּaba֔n 'ashshe֖r 'al-hamּaqelֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond and plane trees and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֣וֹ יַעֲקֹ֗ב מַקַּ֥ל לִבְנֶ֛ה לַ֖ח וְל֣וּז וְעֶרְמ֑וֹן וַיְפַצֵּ֤ל בָּהֵן֙ פְּצָל֣וֹת לְבָנ֔וֹת מַחְשֹׂף֙ הַלָּבָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־הַמַּקְלֽוֹת׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּatzּe֗g 'et-hamּaqelot֙ 'ashshe֣r pּitzּe֔l bּarohati֖ym bּeshshiֽqat֣ot hamּa֑yim 'ashsher֩ tּabo֨'na hatzּo֤'n lishshetּot֙ leno֣kach hatzּo֔'n vayּecha֖menah bּebo'a֥n lishshetּֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he placed the peeled branches in all the watering troughs, so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat and came to drink,

וַיַּצֵּ֗ג אֶת־הַמַּקְלוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פִּצֵּ֔ל בָּרֳהָטִ֖ים בְּשִֽׁקֲת֣וֹת הַמָּ֑יִם אֲשֶׁר֩ תָּבֹ֨אןָ הַצֹּ֤אן לִשְׁתּוֹת֙ לְנֹ֣כַח הַצֹּ֔אן וַיֵּחַ֖מְנָה בְּבֹאָ֥ן לִשְׁתּֽוֹת׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּechem֥u hatzּo֖'n 'el-hamּaqel֑ot vatּela֣dena hatzּo֔'n 'aqudּi֥ym nequdּi֖ym utelu'iֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)they mated in front of the branches. And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.

וַיֶּחֱמ֥וּ הַצֹּ֖אן אֶל־הַמַּקְל֑וֹת וַתֵּלַ֣דְןָ הַצֹּ֔אן עֲקֻדִּ֥ים נְקֻדִּ֖ים וּטְלֻאִֽים׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehakּeshsabiym֮ hiperi֣yd ya'aqob֒ va֠yּitּen pּene֨y hatzּo֧'n 'el-'aqo֛d vekal-ch֖um bּetzo֣'n laba֑n vayּaֽshshet-l֤o 'adariym֙ lebadּ֔o velo֥ shshata֖m 'al-tzo֥'n labaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-coloured animals that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban's animals.

וְהַכְּשָׂבִים֮ הִפְרִ֣יד יַעֲקֹב֒ וַ֠יִּתֵּן פְּנֵ֨י הַצֹּ֧אן אֶל־עָקֹ֛ד וְכָל־ח֖וּם בְּצֹ֣אן לָבָ֑ן וַיָּֽשֶׁת־ל֤וֹ עֲדָרִים֙ לְבַדּ֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א שָׁתָ֖ם עַל־צֹ֥אן לָבָֽן׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipero֥tz ha'i֖yshsh me'o֣d me'o֑d vֽayehiy-lo֙ tzo֣'n rabּ֔ot ushshepachot֙ va'abadi֔ym ugemalּi֖ym vachamoriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

וַיִּפְרֹ֥ץ הָאִ֖ישׁ מְאֹ֣ד מְאֹ֑ד וַֽיְהִי־לוֹ֙ צֹ֣אן רַבּ֔וֹת וּשְׁפָחוֹת֙ וַעֲבָדִ֔ים וּגְמַלִּ֖ים וַחֲמֹרִֽים׃
