Chapter 32
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֨m laba֜n bּabּo֗qer vayenashshּe֧q lebana֛yv velibenota֖yv vayeba֣reke 'etehe֑m vayּe֛leke vayּa֥shshab laba֖n limeqomֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob also went on his way, and the angels of God met him.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם לָבָ֜ן בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיְנַשֵּׁ֧ק לְבָנָ֛יו וְלִבְנוֹתָ֖יו וַיְבָ֣רֶךְ אֶתְהֶ֑ם וַיֵּ֛לֶךְ וַיָּ֥שָׁב לָבָ֖ן לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): veya'aqo֖b hala֣ke ledarekּ֑o vayּipegּe'u-b֖o male'ake֥y 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jacob saw them, he said, "This is the camp of God!" So he named that place Mahanaim[1].

וְיַעֲקֹ֖ב הָלַ֣ךְ לְדַרְכּ֑וֹ וַיִּפְגְּעוּ־ב֖וֹ מַלְאֲכֵ֥י אֱלֹהִֽים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer ya'aqob֙ kּa'ashshe֣r ra'a֔m machane֥h 'elohi֖ym ze֑h vayּiqera֛ shsheֽm-hamּaq֥om hah֖u mֽachanaֽyim׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר רָאָ֔ם מַחֲנֵ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים זֶ֑ה וַיִּקְרָ֛א שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא מַֽחֲנָֽיִם׃פ

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch ya'aqo֤b male'akiym֙ lepana֔yv 'el-'eshsa֖v 'achi֑yv 'a֥retzah shse'i֖yr shsede֥h 'edֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He instructed them: "This is what you are to say to my lord Esau: 'Your servant Jacob says, I have been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יַעֲקֹ֤ב מַלְאָכִים֙ לְפָנָ֔יו אֶל־עֵשָׂ֖ו אָחִ֑יו אַ֥רְצָה שֵׂעִ֖יר שְׂדֵ֥ה אֱדֽוֹם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֤v 'otam֙ le'mo֔r kּo֣h to'mer֔un laֽ'doni֖y le'eshsa֑v kּo֤h 'amar֙ 'abedּeka֣ ya'aqo֔b 'im-laba֣n gּa֔retּiy va'echa֖r 'ad-'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I have cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, male and female servants. Now I am sending this message to my lord, that I may find favour in your eyes.'"

וַיְצַ֤ו אֹתָם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּ֣ה תֹאמְר֔וּן לַֽאדֹנִ֖י לְעֵשָׂ֑ו כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ עַבְדְּךָ֣ יַעֲקֹ֔ב עִם־לָבָ֣ן גַּ֔רְתִּי וָאֵחַ֖ר עַד־עָֽתָּה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy-liy֙ shsh֣or vacham֔or tzo֖'n ve'e֣bed veshshipecha֑h vaֽ'eshshelechah֙ lehagּi֣yd lֽa'doni֔y limetzo'-che֖n bּe'eyneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and now he is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him."

וַֽיְהִי־לִי֙ שׁ֣וֹר וַחֲמ֔וֹר צֹ֖אן וְעֶ֣בֶד וְשִׁפְחָ֑ה וָֽאֶשְׁלְחָה֙ לְהַגִּ֣יד לַֽאדֹנִ֔י לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֶֽיךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshu֨bu֙ hamּale'aki֔ym 'eֽl-ya'aqo֖b le'mo֑r bּa֤'nu 'el-'achi֨yka֙ 'el-'eshsa֔v vegam֙ hole֣ke liqeraֽ'teka֔ ve'arebּa'-me'֥ot 'i֖yshsh 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In great fear and distress Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups, and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

וַיָּשֻׁ֨בוּ֙ הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֖ב לֵאמֹ֑ר בָּ֤אנוּ אֶל־אָחִ֨יךָ֙ אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו וְגַם֙ הֹלֵ֣ךְ לִקְרָֽאתְךָ֔ וְאַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת אִ֖ישׁ עִמּֽוֹ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiyra֧ ya'aqo֛b me'o֖d vayּe֣tzer l֑o vayּa֜chatz 'et-ha'a֣m 'ashsher-'itּ֗o ve'et-hatzּo֧'n ve'et-habּaqa֛r vehagּemalּi֖ym lishshene֥y machanֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He thought, "If Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape."

וַיִּירָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב מְאֹ֖ד וַיֵּ֣צֶר ל֑וֹ וַיַּ֜חַץ אֶת־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֗וֹ וְאֶת־הַצֹּ֧אן וְאֶת־הַבָּקָ֛ר וְהַגְּמַלִּ֖ים לִשְׁנֵ֥י מַחֲנֽוֹת׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer 'im-yab֥o 'eshsa֛v 'el-hamּachane֥h ha'acha֖t vehikּa֑hu vehaya֛h hamּachane֥h hanּishshe'a֖r lipeleytaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jacob prayed, "O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, Lord, you who said to me, 'Go back to your country and your relatives, and I will make you prosper,'

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־יָב֥וֹא עֵשָׂ֛ו אֶל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הָאַחַ֖ת וְהִכָּ֑הוּ וְהָיָ֛ה הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַנִּשְׁאָ֖ר לִפְלֵיטָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֮ ya'aqob֒ 'elohey֙ 'abi֣y 'aberaha֔m ve'lohe֖y 'abi֣y yitzecha֑q yehva֞h ha'ome֣r 'ela֗y shsh֧ub le'aretzeka֛ ulemoladetּeka֖ ve'eyti֥ybah 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two camps.

וַיֹּאמֶר֮ יַעֲקֹב֒ אֱלֹהֵי֙ אָבִ֣י אַבְרָהָ֔ם וֵאלֹהֵ֖י אָבִ֣י יִצְחָ֑ק יְהוָ֞ה הָאֹמֵ֣ר אֵלַ֗י שׁ֧וּב לְאַרְצְךָ֛ וּלְמוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ וְאֵיטִ֥יבָה עִמָּֽךְ׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): qato֜netּiy mikּo֤l hachasadiym֙ umikּal-ha֣'eme֔t 'ashshe֥r 'ashsi֖yta 'et-'abedּe֑ka kּi֣y bemaqeli֗y 'aba֨retּiy֙ 'et-hayּaredּe֣n hazּe֔h ve'atּa֥h hayi֖ytiy lishshene֥y machanֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children.

קָטֹ֜נְתִּי מִכֹּ֤ל הַחֲסָדִים֙ וּמִכָּל־הָ֣אֱמֶ֔ת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתָ אֶת־עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֣י בְמַקְלִ֗י עָבַ֨רְתִּי֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֣ן הַזֶּ֔ה וְעַתָּ֥ה הָיִ֖יתִי לִשְׁנֵ֥י מַחֲנֽוֹת׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): hatzּiyle֥niy na֛ miyּa֥d 'achi֖y miyּa֣d 'eshsa֑v kּiֽy-yare֤ 'anokiy֙ 'ot֔o pּen-yab֣o vehikּa֔niy 'e֖m 'al-bּaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But you have said, 'I will surely make you prosper and will make your descendants like the sand of the sea, which cannot be counted.'"

הַצִּילֵ֥נִי נָ֛א מִיַּ֥ד אָחִ֖י מִיַּ֣ד עֵשָׂ֑ו כִּֽי־יָרֵ֤א אָנֹכִי֙ אֹת֔וֹ פֶּן־יָב֣וֹא וְהִכַּ֔נִי אֵ֖ם עַל־בָּנִֽים׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h 'ama֔retּa heyte֥b 'eyti֖yb 'imּa֑ke veshsametּi֤y 'eֽt-zare'aka֙ kּech֣ol hayּa֔m 'ashshe֥r lo'-yisּape֖r meroֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He spent the night there, and from what he had with him he selected a gift for his brother Esau:

וְאַתָּ֣ה אָמַ֔רְתָּ הֵיטֵ֥ב אֵיטִ֖יב עִמָּ֑ךְ וְשַׂמְתִּ֤י אֶֽת־זַרְעֲךָ֙ כְּח֣וֹל הַיָּ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יִסָּפֵ֖ר מֵרֹֽב׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥len shsha֖m bּalּa֣yelah hah֑u vayּiqּa֞ch min-habּa֧ beyad֛o minecha֖h le'eshsa֥v 'achiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,

וַיָּ֥לֶן שָׁ֖ם בַּלַּ֣יְלָה הַה֑וּא וַיִּקַּ֞ח מִן־הַבָּ֧א בְיָד֛וֹ מִנְחָ֖ה לְעֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִֽיו׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): izּi֣ym ma'ta֔yim uteyashshi֖ym 'eshseri֑ym recheli֥ym ma'ta֖yim ve'eyli֥ym 'eshseriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)thirty female camels with their young, forty cows and ten bulls, and twenty female donkeys and ten male donkeys.

עִזִּ֣ים מָאתַ֔יִם וּתְיָשִׁ֖ים עֶשְׂרִ֑ים רְחֵלִ֥ים מָאתַ֖יִם וְאֵילִ֥ים עֶשְׂרִֽים׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּemalּi֧ym meyniyq֛ot ubeneyhe֖m shsheloshshi֑ym pּar֤ot 'arebּa'iym֙ upari֣ym 'ashsara֔h 'atono֣t 'eshseri֔ym va'eyari֖m 'ashsaraֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He put them in the care of his servants, each herd by itself, and said to his servants, "Go ahead of me, and keep some space between the herds."

גְּמַלִּ֧ים מֵינִיק֛וֹת וּבְנֵיהֶ֖ם שְׁלֹשִׁ֑ים פָּר֤וֹת אַרְבָּעִים֙ וּפָרִ֣ים עֲשָׂרָ֔ה אֲתֹנֹ֣ת עֶשְׂרִ֔ים וַעְיָרִ֖ם עֲשָׂרָֽה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּen֙ bּeyad-'abada֔yv 'e֥der 'e֖der lebadּ֑o va֤yּo'mer 'el-'abadayv֙ 'iber֣u lepana֔y vere֣vach tּashsi֔ymu bּe֥yn 'e֖der ube֥yn 'eֽder׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He instructed the one in the lead: "When my brother Esau meets you and asks, 'Who do you belong to, and where are you going, and who owns all these animals in front of you?'

וַיִּתֵּן֙ בְּיַד־עֲבָדָ֔יו עֵ֥דֶר עֵ֖דֶר לְבַדּ֑וֹ וַ֤יֹּאמֶר אֶל־עֲבָדָיו֙ עִבְר֣וּ לְפָנַ֔י וְרֶ֣וַח תָּשִׂ֔ימוּ בֵּ֥ין עֵ֖דֶר וּבֵ֥ין עֵֽדֶר׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֥v 'et-hari'shsh֖on le'mo֑r kּi֣y yiֽpegּashsheka֞ 'eshsa֣v 'achi֗y vishshe'eֽleka֙ le'mo֔r lemiy-'a֨tּah֙ ve'a֣nah tele֔ke ulemi֖y 'e֥lּeh lepaneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)then you are to say, 'They belong to your servant Jacob. They are a gift sent to my lord Esau, and he is coming behind us.'"

וַיְצַ֥ו אֶת־הָרִאשׁ֖וֹן לֵאמֹ֑ר כִּ֣י יִֽפְגָּשְׁךָ֞ עֵשָׂ֣ו אָחִ֗י וִשְׁאֵֽלְךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְמִי־אַ֨תָּה֙ וְאָ֣נָה תֵלֵ֔ךְ וּלְמִ֖י אֵ֥לֶּה לְפָנֶֽיךָ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'aֽmaretּa֙ le'abedּeka֣ leya'aqo֔b minecha֥h hiv'֙ shshelucha֔h lֽa'doni֖y le'eshsa֑v vehinּe֥h gam-h֖u 'achareֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He also instructed the second, the third and all the others who followed the herds: "You are to say the same thing to Esau when you meet him.

וְאָֽמַרְתָּ֙ לְעַבְדְּךָ֣ לְיַעֲקֹ֔ב מִנְחָ֥ה הִוא֙ שְׁלוּחָ֔ה לַֽאדֹנִ֖י לְעֵשָׂ֑ו וְהִנֵּ֥ה גַם־ה֖וּא אַחֲרֵֽינוּ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֞v gּa֣m 'et-hashshּeni֗y gּa֚m 'et-hashshּeliyshshi֔y gּa֚m 'et-kּal-haho֣leki֔ym 'achare֥y ha'adari֖ym le'mo֑r kּadּaba֤r hazּeh֙ tּedabּer֣un 'el-'eshsa֔v bּemotza'ake֖m 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And be sure to say, 'Your servant Jacob is coming behind us.'" For he thought, "I will pacify him with these gifts I am sending on ahead; later, when I see him, perhaps he will receive me."

וַיְצַ֞ו גַּ֣ם אֶת־הַשֵּׁנִ֗י גַּ֚ם אֶת־הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י גַּ֚ם אֶת־כָּל־הַהֹ֣לְכִ֔ים אַחֲרֵ֥י הָעֲדָרִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר כַּדָּבָ֤ר הַזֶּה֙ תְּדַבְּר֣וּן אֶל־עֵשָׂ֔ו בְּמֹצַאֲכֶ֖ם אֹתֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'amaretּe֕m gּa֗m hinּe֛h 'abedּeka֥ ya'aqo֖b 'achare֑ynu kּiֽy-'ama֞r 'akapּera֣h pana֗yv bּamּinechah֙ hahole֣ket lepana֔y ve'acharey-ken֙ 'ere'e֣h pana֔yv 'ula֖y yishsּa֥ panaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

וַאֲמַרְתֶּ֕ם גַּ֗ם הִנֵּ֛ה עַבְדְּךָ֥ יַעֲקֹ֖ב אַחֲרֵ֑ינוּ כִּֽי־אָמַ֞ר אֲכַפְּרָ֣ה פָנָ֗יו בַּמִּנְחָה֙ הַהֹלֶ֣כֶת לְפָנָ֔י וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֙ אֶרְאֶ֣ה פָנָ֔יו אוּלַ֖י יִשָּׂ֥א פָנָֽי׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa'abo֥r hamּinecha֖h 'al-pּana֑yv veh֛u la֥n bּalּaֽyelah-hah֖u bּaֽmּachaneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two female servants and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

וַתַּעֲבֹ֥ר הַמִּנְחָ֖ה עַל־פָּנָ֑יו וְה֛וּא לָ֥ן בַּלַּֽיְלָה־הַה֖וּא בַּֽמַּחֲנֶֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam ׀ bּalּa֣yelah h֗u vayּiqּa֞ch 'et-shshetּe֤y nashshayv֙ ve'et-shshetּe֣y shshipechota֔yv ve'et-'acha֥d 'ashsa֖r yelada֑yv vaֽyּa'abo֔r 'e֖t ma'aba֥r yabּoֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After he had sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.

וַיָּ֣קָם ׀ בַּלַּ֣יְלָה ה֗וּא וַיִּקַּ֞ח אֶת־שְׁתֵּ֤י נָשָׁיו֙ וְאֶת־שְׁתֵּ֣י שִׁפְחֹתָ֔יו וְאֶת־אַחַ֥ד עָשָׂ֖ר יְלָדָ֑יו וַֽיַּעֲבֹ֔ר אֵ֖ת מַעֲבַ֥ר יַבֹּֽק׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּache֔m vayּaֽ'abire֖m 'et-hanּa֑chal vaֽyּa'abe֖r 'et-'ashsher-lo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled[2] with him till daybreak.

וַיִּקָּחֵ֔ם וַיַּֽעֲבִרֵ֖ם אֶת־הַנָּ֑חַל וַֽיַּעֲבֵ֖ר אֶת־אֲשֶׁר־לוֹ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiuate֥r ya'aqo֖b lebadּ֑o vayּe'abe֥q 'iyshsh֙ 'imּ֔o 'a֖d 'al֥ot hashshּaֽchar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the man saw that he could not overpower him, he touched the socket of Jacob's hip so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

וַיִּוָּתֵ֥ר יַעֲקֹ֖ב לְבַדּ֑וֹ וַיֵּאָבֵ֥ק אִישׁ֙ עִמּ֔וֹ עַ֖ד עֲל֥וֹת הַשָּֽׁחַר׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֗re kּi֣y lo֤ yakol֙ l֔o vayּigּa֖ bּekap-yerek֑o vatּe֨qa'֙ kּap-ye֣reke ya'aqo֔b bּeheֽ'abeq֖o 'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the man said, "Let me go, for it is daybreak." But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."

וַיַּ֗רְא כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָכֹל֙ ל֔וֹ וַיִּגַּ֖ע בְּכַף־יְרֵכ֑וֹ וַתֵּ֨קַע֙ כַּף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב בְּהֵֽאָבְק֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shshalּeche֔niy kּi֥y 'ala֖h hashshּa֑char vayּo֨'mer֙ lo֣ 'ashshaֽlּechaka֔ kּi֖y 'im-bּeraketּaֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שַׁלְּחֵ֔נִי כִּ֥י עָלָ֖ה הַשָּׁ֑חַר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א אֲשַֽׁלֵּחֲךָ֔ כִּ֖י אִם־בֵּרַכְתָּֽנִי׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'ela֖yv mah-shshּeme֑ka vayּo֖'mer ya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel[3], because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו מַה־שְּׁמֶ֑ךָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר יַעֲקֹֽב׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer lo֤ ya'aqob֙ ye'ame֥r 'od֙ shshimeka֔ kּi֖y 'im-yishsera'e֑l kּiֽy-shsari֧yta 'im-'elohi֛ym ve'im-'anashshi֖ym vatּukaֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob said, "Please tell me your name." But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he blessed him there.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֤א יַעֲקֹב֙ יֵאָמֵ֥ר עוֹד֙ שִׁמְךָ֔ כִּ֖י אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־שָׂרִ֧יתָ עִם־אֱלֹהִ֛ים וְעִם־אֲנָשִׁ֖ים וַתּוּכָֽל׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshe'a֣l ya'aqo֗b vayּo֨'mer֙ hagּiֽydah-nּa֣ shsheme֔ka vayּo֕'mer la֥mּah zּe֖h tּishshe'a֣l lishshemi֑y vayeba֥reke 'ot֖o shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jacob called the place Peniel[4], saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

וַיִּשְׁאַ֣ל יַעֲקֹ֗ב וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַגִּֽידָה־נָּ֣א שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה תִּשְׁאַ֣ל לִשְׁמִ֑י וַיְבָ֥רֶךְ אֹת֖וֹ שָֽׁם׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֧ ya'aqo֛b shshe֥m hamּaq֖om pּeniy'e֑l kּiֽy-ra'i֤ytiy 'elohiym֙ pּani֣ym 'el-pּani֔ym vatּinּatze֖l napeshshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel, and he was limping because of his hip.

וַיִּקְרָ֧א יַעֲקֹ֛ב שֵׁ֥ם הַמָּק֖וֹם פְּנִיאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־רָאִ֤יתִי אֱלֹהִים֙ פָּנִ֣ים אֶל־פָּנִ֔ים וַתִּנָּצֵ֖ל נַפְשִֽׁי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽzeraֽch-l֣o hashshּe֔meshsh kּa'ashshe֥r 'aba֖r 'et-pּenu'e֑l veh֥u tzole֖'a 'al-yerekֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore to this day the Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob's hip was touched near the tendon.

וַיִּֽזְרַֽח־ל֣וֹ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר עָבַ֖ר אֶת־פְּנוּאֵ֑ל וְה֥וּא צֹלֵ֖עַ עַל־יְרֵכֽוֹ׃

עַל־כֵּ֡ן לֹֽא־יֹאכְל֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל אֶת־גִּ֣יד הַנָּשֶׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ עַל־כַּ֣ף הַיָּרֵ֔ךְ עַ֖ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה כִּ֤י נָגַע֙ בְּכַף־יֶ֣רֶךְ יַעֲקֹ֔ב בְּגִ֖יד הַנָּשֶֽׁה׃
