Chapter 35
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'elohiym֙ 'eֽl-ya'aqo֔b q֛um 'ale֥h beֽyt-'e֖l veshsheb-shsha֑m va'ashseh-shsha֣m mizebּe֔cha la'el֙ hanּire'e֣h 'ele֔yka bּebarechaka֔ mipּene֖y 'eshsa֥v 'achiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God said to Jacob, "Arise, go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֔ב ק֛וּם עֲלֵ֥ה בֵֽית־אֵ֖ל וְשֶׁב־שָׁ֑ם וַעֲשֵׂה־שָׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֔חַ לָאֵל֙ הַנִּרְאֶ֣ה אֵלֶ֔יךָ בְּבָרְחֲךָ֔ מִפְּנֵ֖י עֵשָׂ֥ו אָחִֽיךָ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer ya'aqob֙ 'el-bּeyt֔o ve'e֖l kּal-'ashshe֣r 'imּ֑o hasi֜ru 'et-'elohe֤y hanּekar֙ 'ashshe֣r bּetokeke֔m vehiֽtּahar֔u vehachali֖ypu shsimeloteykeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, "Put away the strange gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יַעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־בֵּית֔וֹ וְאֶ֖ל כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֑וֹ הָסִ֜רוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַנֵּכָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּתֹכְכֶ֔ם וְהִֽטַּהֲר֔וּ וְהַחֲלִ֖יפוּ שִׂמְלֹתֵיכֶֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): venaq֥umah vena'ale֖h bּeֽyt-'e֑l ve'eֽ'eshseh-shshּa֣m mizebּe֗cha la'e֞l ha'one֤h 'otiy֙ bּey֣om tzaֽrati֔y vayehiy֙ 'imּadi֔y bּadּe֖reke 'ashshe֥r halaֽketּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone."

וְנָק֥וּמָה וְנַעֲלֶ֖ה בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה־שָּׁ֣ם מִזְבֵּ֗חַ לָאֵ֞ל הָעֹנֶ֤ה אֹתִי֙ בְּי֣וֹם צָֽרָתִ֔י וַיְהִי֙ עִמָּדִ֔י בַּדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽכְתִּי׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּen֣u 'eֽl-ya'aqo֗b 'e֣t kּal-'elohe֤y hanּekar֙ 'ashshe֣r bּeyada֔m ve'et-hanּezami֖ym 'ashshe֣r bּe'azeneyhe֑m vayּitemo֤n 'otam֙ ya'aqo֔b tּa֥chat ha'ela֖h 'ashshe֥r 'im-shshekeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem.

וַיִּתְּנ֣וּ אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹ֗ב אֵ֣ת כָּל־אֱלֹהֵ֤י הַנֵּכָר֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדָ֔ם וְאֶת־הַנְּזָמִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּאָזְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּטְמֹ֤ן אֹתָם֙ יַעֲקֹ֔ב תַּ֥חַת הָאֵלָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִם־שְׁכֶֽם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּa֑'u vayehi֣y ׀ chitּa֣t 'elohi֗ym 'al-heֽ'ariym֙ 'ashsher֙ sebiybo֣teyhe֔m velo֣ raֽdep֔u 'achare֖y bּene֥y ya'aqoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no-one pursued them.

וַיִּסָּ֑עוּ וַיְהִ֣י ׀ חִתַּ֣ת אֱלֹהִ֗ים עַל־הֶֽעָרִים֙ אֲשֶׁר֙ סְבִיבֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם וְלֹ֣א רָֽדְפ֔וּ אַחֲרֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יַעֲקֹֽב׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ ya'aqo֜b l֗uzah 'ashsher֙ bּe'e֣retz kּena֔'an hi֖v bּeֽyt-'e֑l h֖u vekal-ha'a֥m 'ashsher-'imּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob and all the people with him came to Luz (that is, Bethel) in the land of Canaan.

וַיָּבֹ֨א יַעֲקֹ֜ב ל֗וּזָה אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן הִ֖וא בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל ה֖וּא וְכָל־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤ben shsham֙ mizebּe֔cha vayּiqera'֙ lamּaq֔om 'e֖l bּeֽyt-'e֑l kּi֣y shsha֗m nigel֤u 'elayv֙ haֽ'elohi֔ym bּebarech֖o mipּene֥y 'achiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)There he built an altar, and he called the place El Bethel, because it was there that God revealed Himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

וַיִּ֤בֶן שָׁם֙ מִזְבֵּ֔חַ וַיִּקְרָא֙ לַמָּק֔וֹם אֵ֖ל בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל כִּ֣י שָׁ֗ם נִגְל֤וּ אֵלָיו֙ הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים בְּבָרְח֖וֹ מִפְּנֵ֥י אָחִֽיו׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֤mat dּeborah֙ meyne֣qet ribeqa֔h vatּiqּabe֛r mitּa֥chat lebeֽyt-'e֖l tּa֣chat haֽ'alּ֑on vayּiqera֥ shshem֖o 'alּ֥on bּakֽut׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried under the oak outside Bethel. So it was named Allon Bakuth (Oak of Weeping).

וַתָּ֤מָת דְּבֹרָה֙ מֵינֶ֣קֶת רִבְקָ֔ה וַתִּקָּבֵ֛ר מִתַּ֥חַת לְבֵֽית־אֵ֖ל תַּ֣חַת הָֽאַלּ֑וֹן וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ אַלּ֥וֹן בָּכֽוּת׃פ

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּera֨ 'elohi֤ym 'eֽl-ya'aqob֙ '֔od bּebo'֖o mipּadּa֣n 'ara֑m vayeba֖reke 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him.

וַיֵּרָ֨א אֱלֹהִ֤ים אֶֽל־יַעֲקֹב֙ ע֔וֹד בְּבֹא֖וֹ מִפַּדַּ֣ן אֲרָ֑ם וַיְבָ֖רֶךְ אֹתֽוֹ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּoֽ'mer-l֥o 'elohi֖ym shshimeka֣ ya'aqo֑b loֽ'-yiqּare'֩ shshimeka֨ '֜od ya'aqo֗b kּi֤y 'im-yishsera'el֙ yiheye֣h shsheme֔ka vayּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)God said to him, "Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel." So He named him Israel.

וַיֹּֽאמֶר־ל֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים שִׁמְךָ֣ יַעֲקֹ֑ב לֹֽא־יִקָּרֵא֩ שִׁמְךָ֨ ע֜וֹד יַעֲקֹ֗ב כִּ֤י אִם־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ יִהְיֶ֣ה שְׁמֶ֔ךָ וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ l֨o 'elohi֜ym 'ani֨y 'e֤l shshadּay֙ pּere֣h urebe֔h gּ֛oy uqeha֥l gּoyi֖m yiheye֣h mimּe֑kּa umelaki֖ym mechalatze֥yka yetzeֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And God said to him, "I am El Shaddai (God Almighty); be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your loins."

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ ל֨וֹ אֱלֹהִ֜ים אֲנִ֨י אֵ֤ל שַׁדַּי֙ פְּרֵ֣ה וּרְבֵ֔ה גּ֛וֹי וּקְהַ֥ל גּוֹיִ֖ם יִהְיֶ֣ה מִמֶּ֑ךָּ וּמְלָכִ֖ים מֵחֲלָצֶ֥יךָ יֵצֵֽאוּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-ha'a֗retz 'ashshe֥r nata֛tּiy le'aberaha֥m uleyitzecha֖q leka֣ 'etּene֑nּah uֽlezare'aka֥ 'achare֖yka 'etּe֥n 'et-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you."

וְאֶת־הָאָ֗רֶץ אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָתַ֛תִּי לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם וּלְיִצְחָ֖ק לְךָ֣ אֶתְּנֶ֑נָּה וּֽלְזַרְעֲךָ֥ אַחֲרֶ֖יךָ אֶתֵּ֥ן אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥'al me'ala֖yv 'elohi֑ym bּamּaq֖om 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r 'itּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then God went up from him at the place where He had talked with him.

וַיַּ֥עַל מֵעָלָ֖יו אֱלֹהִ֑ים בַּמָּק֖וֹם אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּatzּe֨b ya'aqo֜b matzּeba֗h bּamּaq֛om 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r 'itּ֖o matzּe֣bet 'a֑ben vayּasּe֤ke 'ale֨yha֙ ne֔seke vayּitzo֥q 'ale֖yha shshaֽmen׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.

וַיַּצֵּ֨ב יַעֲקֹ֜ב מַצֵּבָ֗ה בַּמָּק֛וֹם אֲשֶׁר־דִּבֶּ֥ר אִתּ֖וֹ מַצֶּ֣בֶת אָ֑בֶן וַיַּסֵּ֤ךְ עָלֶ֨יהָ֙ נֶ֔סֶךְ וַיִּצֹ֥ק עָלֶ֖יהָ שָֽׁמֶן׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ ya'aqo֜b 'et-shshe֣m hamּaq֗om 'ashsher֩ dּibּe֨r 'itּ֥o shsha֛m 'elohi֖ym bּeֽyt-'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א יַעֲקֹ֜ב אֶת־שֵׁ֣ם הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבֶּ֨ר אִתּ֥וֹ שָׁ֛ם אֱלֹהִ֖ים בֵּֽית־אֵֽל׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּise'u֙ mibּe֣yt 'e֔l vaֽyehiy-'֥od kּiberat-ha'a֖retz lab֣o 'epera֑tah vatּe֥led rache֖l vatּeqa֥shsh bּelidetּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they moved on from Bethel. While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.

וַיִּסְעוּ֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֵ֔ל וַֽיְהִי־ע֥וֹד כִּבְרַת־הָאָ֖רֶץ לָב֣וֹא אֶפְרָ֑תָה וַתֵּ֥לֶד רָחֵ֖ל וַתְּקַ֥שׁ בְּלִדְתָּֽהּ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y behaqeshshota֖hּ bּelidetּa֑hּ vatּo֨'mer la֤hּ hameyalּe֨det֙ 'al-tּi֣yre'i֔y kּiֽy-gam-ze֥h la֖ke bּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, "Don't despair, for you have another son."

וַיְהִ֥י בְהַקְשֹׁתָ֖הּ בְּלִדְתָּ֑הּ וַתֹּ֨אמֶר לָ֤הּ הַמְיַלֶּ֨דֶת֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י כִּֽי־גַם־זֶ֥ה לָ֖ךְ בֵּֽן׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y bּetze֤'t napeshshahּ֙ kּi֣y me֔tah vatּiqera֥ shshem֖o bּen-'oni֑y ve'abi֖yv qaֽra'-l֥o bineyamiֽyn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As her soul was departing, for she was dying, she called his name Ben-Oni (Son of my Sorrow). But his father called him Benjamin (Son of the Right Hand).

וַיְהִ֞י בְּצֵ֤את נַפְשָׁהּ֙ כִּ֣י מֵ֔תָה וַתִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ בֶּן־אוֹנִ֑י וְאָבִ֖יו קָֽרָא־ל֥וֹ בִנְיָמִֽין׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֖mat rache֑l vatּiqּaber֙ bּede֣reke 'epera֔tah hi֖v bּe֥yt laֽchem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

וַתָּ֖מָת רָחֵ֑ל וַתִּקָּבֵר֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אֶפְרָ֔תָה הִ֖וא בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּatzּe֧b ya'aqo֛b matzּeba֖h 'al-qeburata֑hּ hi֛v matzּe֥bet qebuֽrat-rache֖l 'ad-hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Over her tomb Jacob set up a pillar, and to this day that pillar marks Rachel's tomb.

וַיַּצֵּ֧ב יַעֲקֹ֛ב מַצֵּבָ֖ה עַל־קְבֻרָתָ֑הּ הִ֛וא מַצֶּ֥בֶת קְבֻֽרַת־רָחֵ֖ל עַד־הַיּֽוֹם׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּa֖ yishsera'e֑l vayּe֣t 'aֽholo֔h meha֖le'ah lemigedּal-'eֽder׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Israel moved on again and pitched his tent beyond Migdal Eder.

וַיִּסַּ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּ֣ט אָֽהֳלֹ֔ה מֵהָ֖לְאָה לְמִגְדַּל־עֵֽדֶר׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּishshekּo֤n yishsera'el֙ bּa'a֣retz hahi֔v vayּe֣leke re'ube֔n vayּishshekּab֙ 'et-bּilehah֙ pּiyle֣geshsh 'abi֔yv vayּishshema֖ yishsera'e֑l p vayּiֽhey֥u beneֽy-ya'aqo֖b shshene֥ym 'ashsaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While Israel was living in that region, Reuben went in and slept with his father's concubine Bilhah, and Israel heard of it. Jacob had twelve sons:

וַיְהִ֗י בִּשְׁכֹּ֤ן יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בָּאָ֣רֶץ הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ רְאוּבֵ֔ן וַיִּשְׁכַּב֙ אֶת־בִּלְהָה֙ פִּילֶ֣גֶשׁ אָבִ֔יו וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל פ וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֖ב שְׁנֵ֥ים עָשָֽׂר׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y le'a֔h bּek֥or ya'aqo֖b re'ube֑n veshshime'on֙ velevi֣y viֽyhuda֔h veyishsּashka֖r uzebuluֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Leah: Reuben the firstborn of Jacob, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.

בְּנֵ֣י לֵאָ֔ה בְּכ֥וֹר יַעֲקֹ֖ב רְאוּבֵ֑ן וְשִׁמְעוֹן֙ וְלֵוִ֣י וִֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְיִשָּׂשכָ֖ר וּזְבוּלֻֽן׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y rache֔l yose֖p ubineyamiֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.

בְּנֵ֣י רָחֵ֔ל יוֹסֵ֖ף וּבִנְיָמִֽן׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֤y bilehah֙ shshipecha֣t rache֔l dּa֖n venapetּaliֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Rachel's servant Bilhah: Dan and Naphtali.

וּבְנֵ֤י בִלְהָה֙ שִׁפְחַ֣ת רָחֵ֔ל דָּ֖ן וְנַפְתָּלִֽי׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֥y zilepּa֛h shshipecha֥t le'a֖h gּa֣d ve'ashshe֑r 'e֚lּeh bּene֣y ya'aqo֔b 'ashshe֥r yulּad-l֖o bּepadּa֥n 'araֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Leah's servant Zilpah: Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Paddan Aram.

וּבְנֵ֥י זִלְפָּ֛ה שִׁפְחַ֥ת לֵאָ֖ה גָּ֣ד וְאָשֵׁ֑ר אֵ֚לֶּה בְּנֵ֣י יַעֲקֹ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר יֻלַּד־ל֖וֹ בְּפַדַּ֥ן אֲרָֽם׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ ya'aqob֙ 'el-yitzecha֣q 'abi֔yv mamere֖ qireya֣t haֽ'arebּa֑ hi֣v cheber֔on 'ashsher-gּaֽr-shsha֥m 'aberaha֖m veyitzechaֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jacob came home to his father Isaac in Mamre, near Kiriath Arba (City of Four—that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.

וַיָּבֹ֤א יַעֲקֹב֙ אֶל־יִצְחָ֣ק אָבִ֔יו מַמְרֵ֖א קִרְיַ֣ת הָֽאַרְבַּ֑ע הִ֣וא חֶבְר֔וֹן אֲשֶׁר־גָּֽר־שָׁ֥ם אַבְרָהָ֖ם וְיִצְחָֽק׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽhey֖u yeme֣y yitzecha֑q me'a֥t shshana֖h ushshemoni֥ym shshanaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isaac lived a hundred and eighty years.

וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ יְמֵ֣י יִצְחָ֑ק מְאַ֥ת שָׁנָ֖ה וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים שָׁנָֽה׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigeva֨ yitzecha֤q vayּa֨mat֙ vayּe'a֣sep 'el-'amּa֔yv zaqe֖n ushseba֣ yami֑ym vayּiqebּer֣u 'ot֔o 'eshsa֥v veya'aqo֖b bּanaֽyv׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, old and full of years. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.

וַיִּגְוַ֨ע יִצְחָ֤ק וַיָּ֨מָת֙ וַיֵּאָ֣סֶף אֶל־עַמָּ֔יו זָקֵ֖ן וּשְׂבַ֣ע יָמִ֑ים וַיִּקְבְּר֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ עֵשָׂ֥ו וְיַעֲקֹ֖ב בָּנָֽיו׃פ
