Chapter 38

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ bּa'e֣t hahi֔v vayּe֥red yehuda֖h me'e֣t 'echa֑yv vayּe֛t 'ad-'i֥yshsh 'adulּami֖y ushshem֥o chiyraֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At that time, Judah went down from his brothers and visited a certain Adullamite whose name was Hirah.

וַֽיְהִי֙ בָּעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔וא וַיֵּ֥רֶד יְהוּדָ֖ה מֵאֵ֣ת אֶחָ֑יו וַיֵּ֛ט עַד־אִ֥ישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִ֖י וּשְׁמ֥וֹ חִירָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּare'-shsha֧m yehuda֛h bּat-'i֥yshsh kּena'ani֖y ushshem֣o shsh֑u'a vayּiqּache֖ha vayּabo֥ 'eleֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah saw there the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua. He married her and went in to her.

וַיַּרְא־שָׁ֧ם יְהוּדָ֛ה בַּת־אִ֥ישׁ כְּנַעֲנִ֖י וּשְׁמ֣וֹ שׁ֑וּעַ וַיִּקָּחֶ֖הָ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֖har vatּe֣led bּe֑n vayּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o 'eֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and he named him Er.

וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ עֵֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֥har '֖od vatּe֣led bּe֑n vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o 'onaֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She became pregnant again and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.

וַתַּ֥הַר ע֖וֹד וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֑ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ אוֹנָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤sep 'od֙ vatּe֣led bּe֔n vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o shshela֑h vehaya֥h bikezi֖yb bּelidetּa֥hּ 'otֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She gave birth to yet another son and named him Shelah; he was at Chezib when she gave birth to him.

וַתֹּ֤סֶף עוֹד֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁלָ֑ה וְהָיָ֥ה בִכְזִ֖יב בְּלִדְתָּ֥הּ אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֧ch yehuda֛h 'ishshּa֖h le'e֣r bּekor֑o ushshema֖hּ tּamaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, and her name was Tamar.

וַיִּקַּ֧ח יְהוּדָ֛ה אִשָּׁ֖ה לְעֵ֣ר בְּכוֹר֑וֹ וּשְׁמָ֖הּ תָּמָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'e֚r bּek֣or yehuda֔h ra֖ bּe'eyne֣y yehva֑h vayemite֖hu yehvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight, so the LORD put him to death.

וַיְהִ֗י עֵ֚ר בְּכ֣וֹר יְהוּדָ֔ה רַ֖ע בְּעֵינֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיְמִתֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehudah֙ le'ona֔n bּo֛ 'el-'e֥shshet 'achi֖yka veyabּe֣m 'ota֑hּ vehaqe֥m ze֖ra le'achiֽyka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her, and raise up offspring for your brother."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ לְאוֹנָ֔ן בֹּ֛א אֶל־אֵ֥שֶׁת אָחִ֖יךָ וְיַבֵּ֣ם אֹתָ֑הּ וְהָקֵ֥ם זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣da 'ona֔n kּi֛y lּo֥ l֖o yiheye֣h hazּa֑ra vehaya֞h 'im-bּa֨ 'el-'e֤shshet 'achiyv֙ veshshiche֣t 'a֔retzah lebiletּi֥y netan-ze֖ra le'achiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; and when he went in to his brother's wife, he spilled it on the ground so that he would not give offspring to his brother.

וַיֵּ֣דַע אוֹנָ֔ן כִּ֛י לֹּ֥א ל֖וֹ יִהְיֶ֣ה הַזָּ֑רַע וְהָיָ֞ה אִם־בָּ֨א אֶל־אֵ֤שֶׁת אָחִיו֙ וְשִׁחֵ֣ת אַ֔רְצָה לְבִלְתִּ֥י נְתָן־זֶ֖רַע לְאָחִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֛ra bּe'eyne֥y yehva֖h 'ashshe֣r 'ashsa֑h vayּa֖met gּam-'otֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)What he did was evil in the LORD's sight, and He put him to death also.

וַיֵּ֛רַע בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה וַיָּ֖מֶת גַּם־אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehudah֩ letama֨r kּalּat֜o shshebi֧y 'alemana֣h beyt-'abi֗yke 'ad-yigedּal֙ shshela֣h beni֔y kּi֣y 'ama֔r pּen-yam֥ut gּam-h֖u kּe'echa֑yv vatּe֣leke tּama֔r vatּe֖shsheb bּe֥yt 'abiֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house until my son Shelah is grown up," for he said, "Lest he also die, like his brothers." Tamar went and lived in her father's house.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָה֩ לְתָמָ֨ר כַּלָּת֜וֹ שְׁבִ֧י אַלְמָנָ֣ה בֵית־אָבִ֗יךְ עַד־יִגְדַּל֙ שֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֔י כִּ֣י אָמַ֔ר פֶּן־יָמ֥וּת גַּם־ה֖וּא כְּאֶחָ֑יו וַתֵּ֣לֶךְ תָּמָ֔ר וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּirebּu֙ hayּami֔ym vatּa֖mat bּat-shsh֣u'a 'eֽshshet-yehuda֑h vayּinּa֣chem yehuda֗h vayּa֜'al 'al-gּoֽzaze֤y tzo'no֙ h֗u vechiyra֛h re'e֥hu ha'adulּami֖y tּimenaֽtah׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After many days, Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted and went up to his sheep-shearers at Timnah, along with his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַתָּ֖מָת בַּת־שׁ֣וּעַ אֵֽשֶׁת־יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּנָּ֣חֶם יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּ֜עַל עַל־גֹּֽזֲזֵ֤י צֹאנוֹ֙ ה֗וּא וְחִירָ֛ה רֵעֵ֥הוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִ֖י תִּמְנָֽתָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֥d letama֖r le'mo֑r hinּe֥h chami֛yke 'ole֥h timena֖tah lago֥z tzo'nֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Tamar was told, "Behold, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep."

וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְתָמָ֖ר לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֥ה חָמִ֛יךְ עֹלֶ֥ה תִמְנָ֖תָה לָגֹ֥ז צֹאנֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּasar֩ bּigede֨y 'alemenuta֜hּ meֽ'ale֗yha vatּeka֤s bּatzּa'iyp֙ vatּite'alּa֔p vatּe֨shsheb֙ bּepe֣tach 'eyna֔yim 'ashshe֖r 'al-dּe֣reke tּimena֑tah kּi֤y ra'atah֙ kּiֽy-gada֣l shshela֔h vehi֕v loֽ'-nitּena֥h l֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She took off her widow's garments, covered herself with her veil, wrapped herself, and sat at the gate of Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him as a wife.

וַתָּסַר֩ בִּגְדֵ֨י אַלְמְנוּתָ֜הּ מֵֽעָלֶ֗יהָ וַתְּכַ֤ס בַּצָּעִיף֙ וַתִּתְעַלָּ֔ף וַתֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בְּפֶ֣תַח עֵינַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ תִּמְנָ֑תָה כִּ֤י רָאֲתָה֙ כִּֽי־גָדַ֣ל שֵׁלָ֔ה וְהִ֕וא לֹֽא־נִתְּנָ֥ה ל֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'e֣ha yehuda֔h vֽayּacheshshebe֖ha lezona֑h kּi֥y kisּeta֖h pּaneֽyha׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face.

וַיִּרְאֶ֣הָ יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיַּחְשְׁבֶ֖הָ לְזוֹנָ֑ה כִּ֥י כִסְּתָ֖ה פָּנֶֽיהָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨t 'ele֜yha 'el-hadּe֗reke vayּo֨'mer֙ haֽbah-nּa'֙ 'ab֣o 'ela֔yike kּi֚y lo֣ yada֔ kּi֥y kalּat֖o hi֑v vatּo֨'mer֙ mah-tּitּen-lּi֔y kּi֥y tab֖o 'elaֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He turned to her by the way and said, "Please come, let me come in to you," for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"

וַיֵּ֨ט אֵלֶ֜יהָ אֶל־הַדֶּ֗רֶךְ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הָֽבָה־נָּא֙ אָב֣וֹא אֵלַ֔יִךְ כִּ֚י לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י כַלָּת֖וֹ הִ֑וא וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִּ֔י כִּ֥י תָב֖וֹא אֵלָֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer 'anoki֛y 'ashshalּa֥ch gּediֽy-'izּi֖ym min-hatzּo֑'n vatּo֕'mer 'im-tּitּe֥n 'erab֖on 'a֥d shshalecheֽka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge until you send it?"

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר אָנֹכִ֛י אֲשַׁלַּ֥ח גְּדִֽי־עִזִּ֖ים מִן־הַצֹּ֑אן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר אִם־תִּתֵּ֥ן עֵרָב֖וֹן עַ֥ד שָׁלְחֶֽךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer ma֣h hֽa'erabon֮ 'ashshe֣r 'etּen-lּake֒ vatּo֗'mer chotaֽmeka֙ upetiyle֔ka umatּeka֖ 'ashshe֣r bּeyade֑ka vayּitּen-lּa֛hּ vayּabo֥ 'ele֖yha vatּa֥har lֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She said, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." He gave them to her and came in to her, and she conceived by him.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מָ֣ה הָֽעֵרָבוֹן֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶתֶּן־לָּךְ֒ וַתֹּ֗אמֶר חֹתָֽמְךָ֙ וּפְתִילֶ֔ךָ וּמַטְּךָ֖ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָדֶ֑ךָ וַיִּתֶּן־לָּ֛הּ וַיָּבֹ֥א אֵלֶ֖יהָ וַתַּ֥הַר לֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣qam vatּe֔leke vatּa֥sar tze'iypa֖hּ me'ale֑yha vatּilebּa֖shsh bּigede֥y 'alemenutaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)She arose and went away, took off her veil, and put on her widow's garments.

וַתָּ֣קָם וַתֵּ֔לֶךְ וַתָּ֥סַר צְעִיפָ֖הּ מֵעָלֶ֑יהָ וַתִּלְבַּ֖שׁ בִּגְדֵ֥י אַלְמְנוּתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch yehuda֜h 'et-gּedi֣y haֽ'izּi֗ym bּeyad֙ re'e֣hu haֽ'adulּami֔y laqa֥chat ha'erab֖on miyּa֣d ha'ishshּa֑h velo֖ metza'aֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶת־גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים בְּיַד֙ רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י לָקַ֥חַת הָעֵרָב֖וֹן מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹ֖א מְצָאָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshe'a֞l 'et-'aneshshe֤y meqomahּ֙ le'mo֔r 'ayּe֧h haqּedeshsha֛h hi֥v ba'eyna֖yim 'al-hadּa֑reke vayּo֣'mer֔u lo'-hayeta֥h baze֖h qedeshshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he asked the men of that place, saying, "Where is the prostitute who was at Enaim by the road?" They said, "There has been no prostitute here."

וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨shshab֙ 'el-yehuda֔h vayּo֖'mer lo֣ metza'ti֑yha vega֨m 'aneshshe֤y hamּaqom֙ 'aֽmer֔u lo'-hayeta֥h baze֖h qedeshshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He returned to Judah and said, "I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no prostitute here.'"

וַיָּ֨שָׁב֙ אֶל־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ וְגַ֨ם אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehudah֙ tּiֽqּaֽch-la֔hּ pּe֖n niheye֣h lab֑uz hinּe֤h shshala֨chetּiy֙ hagּedi֣y hazּe֔h ve'atּa֖h lo֥ metza'taֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah said, "Let her keep it, lest we be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you have not found her."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֔הּ פֶּ֖ן נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁלַ֨חְתִּי֙ הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ kּemishshelo֣shsh chodashshi֗ym vayּugּa֨d liֽyhuda֤h lֽe'mor֙ zaֽnetah֙ tּama֣r kּalּate֔ka vega֛m hinּe֥h hara֖h lizenuni֑ym vayּo֣'mer yehuda֔h hotziy'֖uha vetishsּareֽp׃

Edified Edition (EDE)About three months later, Judah was told, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the prostitute. Moreover, behold, she is with child by prostitution." Judah said, "Bring her out and let her be burned."

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה לֵֽאמֹר֙ זָֽנְתָה֙ תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ וְגַ֛ם הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה לִזְנוּנִ֑ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֔ה הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hi֣v mutze֗'t vehi֨y shshalecha֤h 'el-chami֨yha֙ le'mo֔r le'iyshsh֙ 'ashsher-'e֣lּeh lּ֔o 'anoki֖y hara֑h vatּo֨'mer֙ hakּer-na֔ lemi֞y hachote֧met vehapּetiyli֛ym vehamּatּe֖h ha'eֽlּeh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "By the man whose these are, I am with child." She also said, "Please discern whose these are—the signet, and the cords, and the staff."

הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־חָמִ֨יהָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ אָנֹכִ֖י הָרָ֑ה וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַכֶּר־נָ֔א לְמִ֞י הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּakּe֣r yehuda֗h vayּo֨'mer֙ tzaֽdeqa֣h mimּe֔nּiy kּiֽy-'al-kּe֥n lo'-netatּi֖yha leshshela֣h beni֑y veloֽ'-yasa֥p '֖od leda'etּaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Judah acknowledged them and said, "She is more righteous than I, because I did not give her to my son Shelah." He knew her again no more.

וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֖y bּe'e֣t lidetּa֑hּ vehinּe֥h te'omi֖ym bּebitenaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the time of her labour, behold, twins were in her womb.

וַיְהִ֖י בְּעֵ֣ת לִדְתָּ֑הּ וְהִנֵּ֥ה תְאוֹמִ֖ים בְּבִטְנָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y belidetּa֖hּ vayּitּen-ya֑d vatּiqּa֣ch hameyalּe֗det vatּiqeshsho֨r 'al-yad֤o shshaniy֙ le'mo֔r ze֖h yatza֥ ri'shshonaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This came out first."

וַיְהִ֥י בְלִדְתָּ֖הּ וַיִּתֶּן־יָ֑ד וַתִּקַּ֣ח הַמְיַלֶּ֗דֶת וַתִּקְשֹׁ֨ר עַל־יָד֤וֹ שָׁנִי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר זֶ֖ה יָצָ֥א רִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ kּemeshshi֣yb yad֗o vehinּeh֙ yatza֣ 'achi֔yv vatּo֕'mer mah-pּara֖tzetּa 'ale֣yka pּa֑retz vayּiqera֥ shshem֖o pּaֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" Therefore his name was called Perez.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמֵשִׁ֣יב יָד֗וֹ וְהִנֵּה֙ יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו וַתֹּ֕אמֶר מַה־פָּרַ֖צְתָּ עָלֶ֣יךָ פָּ֑רֶץ וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ פָּֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'achar֙ yatza֣ 'achi֔yv 'ashshe֥r 'al-yad֖o hashshּani֑y vayּiqera֥ shshem֖o zaֽrach׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

וְאַחַר֙ יָצָ֣א אָחִ֔יו אֲשֶׁ֥ר עַל־יָד֖וֹ הַשָּׁנִ֑י וַיִּקְרָ֥א שְׁמ֖וֹ זָֽרַח׃ס
