Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha֣'ada֔m yada֖ 'et-chaua֣h 'ishshetּ֑o vatּa֨har֙ vatּe֣led 'et-qa֔yin vatּo֕'mer qani֥ytiy 'i֖yshsh 'et-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have gotten a man with the LORD."

וְהָ֣אָדָ֔ם יָדַ֖ע אֶת־חַוָּ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֑וֹ וַתַּ֨הַר֙ וַתֵּ֣לֶד אֶת־קַ֔יִן וַתֹּ֕אמֶר קָנִ֥יתִי אִ֖ישׁ אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֣sep lale֔det 'et-'achi֖yv 'et-ha֑bel vaֽyehiy-he֨bel֙ ro֣'eh tzo֔'n veqa֕yin haya֖h 'obe֥d 'adamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil.

וַתֹּ֣סֶף לָלֶ֔דֶת אֶת־אָחִ֖יו אֶת־הָ֑בֶל וַֽיְהִי־הֶ֨בֶל֙ רֹ֣עֵה צֹ֔אן וְקַ֕יִן הָיָ֖ה עֹבֵ֥ד אֲדָמָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehi֖y miqּe֣tz yami֑ym vayּabe֨ qa֜yin mipּeri֧y hֽa'adama֛h minecha֖h laֽyhvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD.

וַֽיְהִ֖י מִקֵּ֣ץ יָמִ֑ים וַיָּבֵ֨א קַ֜יִן מִפְּרִ֧י הָֽאֲדָמָ֛ה מִנְחָ֖ה לַֽיהוָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehe֨bel hebi֥y gam-h֛u mibּekor֥ot tzo'n֖o umeֽchelebehe֑n vayּi֣shsha yehva֔h 'el-he֖bel ve'el-minechatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Abel also brought an offering, of the firstlings of his flock and of their fat portions. And the LORD looked with [1] (favour) on Abel and his offering,

וְהֶ֨בֶל הֵבִ֥יא גַם־ה֛וּא מִבְּכֹר֥וֹת צֹאנ֖וֹ וּמֵֽחֶלְבֵהֶ֑ן וַיִּ֣שַׁע יְהוָ֔ה אֶל־הֶ֖בֶל וְאֶל־מִנְחָתֽוֹ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'el-qa֥yin ve'el-minechat֖o lo֣ shsha'a֑h vayּi֤char leqa֨yin֙ me'o֔d vaֽyּipּel֖u pּanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but on Cain and his offering He did not look with favour. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell.

וְאֶל־קַ֥יִן וְאֶל־מִנְחָת֖וֹ לֹ֣א שָׁעָ֑ה וַיִּ֤חַר לְקַ֨יִן֙ מְאֹ֔ד וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ פָּנָֽיו׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h 'el-qa֑yin la֚mּah cha֣rah la֔ke vela֖mּah napel֥u paneֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your face fallen?"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־קָ֑יִן לָ֚מָּה חָ֣רָה לָ֔ךְ וְלָ֖מָּה נָפְל֥וּ פָנֶֽיךָ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֤o 'im-tּeytiyb֙ shse'e֔t ve'im֙ lo֣ teyti֔yb lapּe֖tach chatּa֣'t robe֑tz ve'ele֨yka֙ tּeshsh֣uqat֔o ve'atּa֖h tּimeshshal-bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If you do well, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do well, Sin is crouching at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it."

הֲל֤וֹא אִם־תֵּיטִיב֙ שְׂאֵ֔ת וְאִם֙ לֹ֣א תֵיטִ֔יב לַפֶּ֖תַח חַטָּ֣את רֹבֵ֑ץ וְאֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ תְּשׁ֣וּקָת֔וֹ וְאַתָּ֖ה תִּמְשָׁל־בּֽוֹ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer qa֖yin 'el-he֣bel 'achi֑yv vֽayehiy֙ bּiheyota֣m bּashsּade֔h vayּa֥qam qa֛yin 'el-he֥bel 'achi֖yv vayּaharegeֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let us go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר קַ֖יִן אֶל־הֶ֣בֶל אָחִ֑יו וַֽיְהִי֙ בִּהְיוֹתָ֣ם בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה וַיָּ֥קָם קַ֛יִן אֶל־הֶ֥בֶל אָחִ֖יו וַיַּהַרְגֵֽהוּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-qa֔yin 'e֖y he֣bel 'achi֑yka vayּo֨'mer֙ lo֣ yada֔'etּiy hashshome֥r 'achi֖y 'anoֽkiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־קַ֔יִן אֵ֖י הֶ֣בֶל אָחִ֑יךָ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְתִּי הֲשֹׁמֵ֥ר אָחִ֖י אָנֹֽכִי׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer me֣h 'ashsi֑yta q֚ol dּeme֣y 'achi֔yka tzo'aqi֥ym 'ela֖y min-haֽ'adamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD said, "What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying out to Me from the ground!"

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָ ק֚וֹל דְּמֵ֣י אָחִ֔יךָ צֹעֲקִ֥ים אֵלַ֖י מִן־הָֽאֲדָמָֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h 'ar֣ur 'a֑tּah min-haֽ'adamah֙ 'ashshe֣r pּatzeta֣h 'et-pּi֔yha laqa֛chat 'et-dּeme֥y 'achi֖yka miyּadeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.

וְעַתָּ֖ה אָר֣וּר אָ֑תָּה מִן־הָֽאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּצְתָ֣ה אֶת־פִּ֔יהָ לָקַ֛חַת אֶת־דְּמֵ֥י אָחִ֖יךָ מִיָּדֶֽךָ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֤y taֽ'abod֙ 'et-ha֣'adama֔h loֽ'-tose֥p tּet-kּocha֖hּ la֑ke na֥ vana֖d tּiֽheye֥h ba'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its strength for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."

כִּ֤י תַֽעֲבֹד֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֲדָמָ֔ה לֹֽא־תֹסֵ֥ף תֵּת־כֹּחָ֖הּ לָ֑ךְ נָ֥ע וָנָ֖ד תִּֽהְיֶ֥ה בָאָֽרֶץ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer qa֖yin 'el-yehva֑h gּad֥ol 'avoni֖y minּeshsoֽ'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Cain said to the LORD, "My iniquity is greater than I can bear."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר קַ֖יִן אֶל־יְהוָ֑ה גָּד֥וֹל עֲוֺנִ֖י מִנְּשֹֽׂא׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): hen֩ gּera֨shshetּa 'oti֜y hayּ֗om me'al֙ pּene֣y hֽa'adama֔h umipּane֖yka 'esּate֑r vehayi֜ytiy na֤ vanad֙ bּa'a֔retz vehaya֥h kal-motze'i֖y yֽaharegeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Today You are driving me from the face of the ground, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me."

הֵן֩ גֵּרַ֨שְׁתָּ אֹתִ֜י הַיּ֗וֹם מֵעַל֙ פְּנֵ֣י הָֽאֲדָמָ֔ה וּמִפָּנֶ֖יךָ אֶסָּתֵ֑ר וְהָיִ֜יתִי נָ֤ע וָנָד֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ וְהָיָ֥ה כָל־מֹצְאִ֖י יַֽהַרְגֵֽנִי׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer l֣o yehva֗h laken֙ kּal-hore֣g qa֔yin shshibe'ata֖yim yuqּa֑m vayּa֨shsem yehva֤h leqa֨yin֙ '֔ot lebiletּi֥y hakּot-'ot֖o kּal-motze'ֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the LORD said to him, "Not so; if anyone kills Cain, Sevenfold vengeance shall be taken on him." Then the LORD set a sign upon Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ יְהוָ֗ה לָכֵן֙ כָּל־הֹרֵ֣ג קַ֔יִן שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם יֻקָּ֑ם וַיָּ֨שֶׂם יְהוָ֤ה לְקַ֨יִן֙ א֔וֹת לְבִלְתִּ֥י הַכּוֹת־אֹת֖וֹ כָּל־מֹצְאֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥tze qa֖yin milּipene֣y yehva֑h vayּe֥shsheb bּe'eֽretz-n֖od qidemat-'eֽden׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Cain went out from the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

וַיֵּ֥צֵא קַ֖יִן מִלִּפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בְּאֶֽרֶץ־נ֖וֹד קִדְמַת־עֵֽדֶן׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤da qa֨yin֙ 'et-'ishshetּ֔o vatּa֖har vatּe֣led 'et-chan֑oke vaֽyehiy֙ bּo֣neh 'i֔yr vayּiqera'֙ shshe֣m ha'i֔yr kּeshshe֖m bּen֥o chanֽoke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch.

וַיֵּ֤דַע קַ֨יִן֙ אֶת־אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַתַּ֖הַר וַתֵּ֣לֶד אֶת־חֲנ֑וֹךְ וַֽיְהִי֙ בֹּ֣נֶה עִ֔יר וַיִּקְרָא֙ שֵׁ֣ם הָעִ֔יר כְּשֵׁ֖ם בְּנ֥וֹ חֲנֽוֹךְ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiuale֤d laֽchanoke֙ 'et-'iyra֔d ve'iyra֕d yala֖d 'et-mechֽuya'e֑l umechiyּya'e֗l yalad֙ 'et-met֣ushsha'e֔l umetushsha'e֖l yala֥d 'et-laֽmeke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.

וַיִּוָּלֵ֤ד לַֽחֲנוֹךְ֙ אֶת־עִירָ֔ד וְעִירָ֕ד יָלַ֖ד אֶת־מְחֽוּיָאֵ֑ל וּמְחִיּיָאֵ֗ל יָלַד֙ אֶת־מְת֣וּשָׁאֵ֔ל וּמְתוּשָׁאֵ֖ל יָלַ֥ד אֶת־לָֽמֶךְ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽqּaֽch-l֥o le֖meke shshetּe֣y nashshi֑ym shshe֤m haֽ'achat֙ 'ada֔h veshshe֥m hashshּeni֖yt tzilּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah.

וַיִּֽקַּֽח־ל֥וֹ לֶ֖מֶךְ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֑ים שֵׁ֤ם הָֽאַחַת֙ עָדָ֔ה וְשֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית צִלָּֽה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֥led 'ada֖h 'et-yaba֑l h֣u haya֔h 'abi֕y yoshshe֥b 'o֖hel umiqeneֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

וַתֵּ֥לֶד עָדָ֖ה אֶת־יָבָ֑ל ה֣וּא הָיָ֔ה אֲבִ֕י יֹשֵׁ֥ב אֹ֖הֶל וּמִקְנֶֽה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshe֥m 'achi֖yv yuba֑l h֣u haya֔h 'abi֕y kּal-tּope֥shs kּinּ֖or ve'ugaֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes.

וְשֵׁ֥ם אָחִ֖יו יוּבָ֑ל ה֣וּא הָיָ֔ה אֲבִ֕י כָּל־תֹּפֵ֥שׂ כִּנּ֖וֹר וְעוּגָֽב׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vetzilּa֣h gam-hi֗v yaֽledah֙ 'et-tּ֣ubal qa֔yin lote֕shsh kּal-chore֥shsh necho֖shshet ubareze֑l vaֽ'ach֥ot tּֽubal-qa֖yin naֽ'amaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain's sister was Naamah.

וְצִלָּ֣ה גַם־הִ֗וא יָֽלְדָה֙ אֶת־תּ֣וּבַל קַ֔יִן לֹטֵ֕שׁ כָּל־חֹרֵ֥שׁ נְחֹ֖שֶׁת וּבַרְזֶ֑ל וַֽאֲח֥וֹת תּֽוּבַל־קַ֖יִן נַֽעֲמָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer le֜meke lenashsha֗yv 'ada֤h vetzilּah֙ shshema֣'an qoli֔y neshshe֣y le֔meke ha'eze֖nּah 'imerati֑y kּi֣y 'i֤yshsh hara֨getּiy֙ lepitze'i֔y veye֖led lechabּuratiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Lamech said to his wives, "Adah and Zillah, listen to my voice; wives of Lamech, hear my words: I have killed a man for wounding me, even a young man for bruising me."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לֶ֜מֶךְ לְנָשָׁ֗יו עָדָ֤ה וְצִלָּה֙ שְׁמַ֣עַן קוֹלִ֔י נְשֵׁ֣י לֶ֔מֶךְ הַאְזֵ֖נָּה אִמְרָתִ֑י כִּ֣י אִ֤ישׁ הָרַ֨גְתִּי֙ לְפִצְעִ֔י וְיֶ֖לֶד לְחַבֻּרָתִֽי׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֥y shshibe'ata֖yim yuqּam-qa֑yin vele֖meke shshibe'i֥ym veshshibe'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech seventy-seven times."

כִּ֥י שִׁבְעָתַ֖יִם יֻקַּם־קָ֑יִן וְלֶ֖מֶךְ שִׁבְעִ֥ים וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨da 'ada֥m 'od֙ 'et-'ishshetּ֔o vatּe֣led bּe֔n vatּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o shshe֑t kּi֣y shshaֽt-li֤y 'elohiym֙ ze֣ra 'ache֔r tּa֣chat he֔bel kּi֥y harag֖o qaֽyin׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, saying, "God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him."

וַיֵּ֨דַע אָדָ֥ם עוֹד֙ אֶת־אִשְׁתּ֔וֹ וַתֵּ֣לֶד בֵּ֔ן וַתִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ שֵׁ֑ת כִּ֣י שָֽׁת־לִ֤י אֱלֹהִים֙ זֶ֣רַע אַחֵ֔ר תַּ֣חַת הֶ֔בֶל כִּ֥י הֲרָג֖וֹ קָֽיִן׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): uleshshe֤t gּam-hu'֙ yulּad-bּe֔n vayּiqera֥ 'et-shshem֖o 'en֑oshsh 'a֣z hucha֔l liqero֖ bּeshshe֥m yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.

וּלְשֵׁ֤ת גַּם־הוּא֙ יֻלַּד־בֵּ֔ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמ֖וֹ אֱנ֑וֹשׁ אָ֣ז הוּחַ֔ל לִקְרֹ֖א בְּשֵׁ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃פ
