Chapter 40
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'achar֙ hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh chaֽte'֛u mashsheqe֥h meֽleke-mitzera֖yim veha'ope֑h la'adoneyhe֖m leme֥leke mitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After these things, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt.

וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה חָֽטְא֛וּ מַשְׁקֵ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֖יִם וְהָאֹפֶ֑ה לַאֲדֹנֵיהֶ֖ם לְמֶ֥לֶךְ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqetzo֣p pּare'o֔h 'a֖l shshene֣y sariysa֑yv 'a֚l shsa֣r hamּashsheqi֔ym ve'a֖l shsa֥r ha'opiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh was angry with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.

וַיִּקְצֹ֣ף פַּרְעֹ֔ה עַ֖ל שְׁנֵ֣י סָרִיסָ֑יו עַ֚ל שַׂ֣ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים וְעַ֖ל שַׂ֥ר הָאוֹפִֽים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֨n 'ota֜m bּemishshema֗r bּe֛yt shsa֥r hatabּachi֖ym 'el-bּe֣yt hasּo֑har meq֕om 'ashshe֥r yose֖p 'as֥ur shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר בֵּ֛ית שַׂ֥ר הַטַבָּחִ֖ים אֶל־בֵּ֣ית הַסֹּ֑הַר מְק֕וֹם אֲשֶׁ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אָס֥וּר שָֽׁם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠yּipeqod shsa֣r hatּabּachi֧ym 'et-yose֛p 'itּa֖m vayeshsha֣ret 'ota֑m vayּihey֥u yami֖ym bּemishshemaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison for many days.

וַ֠יִּפְקֹד שַׂ֣ר הַטַּבָּחִ֧ים אֶת־יוֹסֵ֛ף אִתָּ֖ם וַיְשָׁ֣רֶת אֹתָ֑ם וַיִּהְי֥וּ יָמִ֖ים בְּמִשְׁמָֽר׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaֽchalemu֩ chal֨om shsheneyhe֜m 'i֤yshsh chalomo֙ bּela֣yelah 'echa֔d 'i֖yshsh kּepiter֣on chalom֑o hamּashsheqe֣h veha'ope֗h 'ashsher֙ leme֣leke mitzera֔yim 'ashshe֥r 'asuri֖ym bּebe֥yt hasּoֽhar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Both of them had a dream, each man his own dream in one night, each according to the interpretation of his dream—the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.

וַיַּֽחַלְמוּ֩ חֲל֨וֹם שְׁנֵיהֶ֜ם אִ֤ישׁ חֲלֹמוֹ֙ בְּלַ֣יְלָה אֶחָ֔ד אִ֖ישׁ כְּפִתְר֣וֹן חֲלֹמ֑וֹ הַמַּשְׁקֶ֣ה וְהָאֹפֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁר֙ לְמֶ֣לֶךְ מִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲסוּרִ֖ים בְּבֵ֥ית הַסֹּֽהַר׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֧ 'aleyhe֛m yose֖p bּabּo֑qer vayּa֣re 'ota֔m vehinּa֖m zo'apiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were dejected.

וַיָּבֹ֧א אֲלֵיהֶ֛ם יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַיַּ֣רְא אֹתָ֔ם וְהִנָּ֖ם זֹעֲפִֽים׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshe'a֞l 'et-seriyse֣y pare'o֗h 'ashshe֨r 'itּ֧o bemishshema֛r bּe֥yt 'adona֖yv le'mo֑r madּ֛u'a pּeneyke֥m ra'i֖ym hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in custody in his master’s house, "Why do you look so sad today?"

וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־סְרִיסֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אִתּ֧וֹ בְמִשְׁמַ֛ר בֵּ֥ית אֲדֹנָ֖יו לֵאמֹ֑ר מַדּ֛וּעַ פְּנֵיכֶ֥ם רָעִ֖ים הַיּֽוֹם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ela֔yv chal֣om chala֔menu upote֖r 'e֣yn 'ot֑o vayּo֨'mer 'alehe֜m yose֗p hal֤o lֽe'lohiym֙ pּiteroni֔ym sapּeru-na֖ liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They said to him, "We have both had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them." Joseph said to them, "Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me."

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו חֲל֣וֹם חָלַ֔מְנוּ וּפֹתֵ֖ר אֵ֣ין אֹת֑וֹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם יוֹסֵ֗ף הֲל֤וֹא לֵֽאלֹהִים֙ פִּתְרֹנִ֔ים סַפְּרוּ־נָ֖א לִֽי׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayesapּe֧r shsaֽr-hamּashsheqi֛ym 'et-chalom֖o leyose֑p vayּo֣'mer l֔o bּachalomi֕y vehinּeh-ge֖pen lepanaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph, saying, "In my dream, behold, a vine was before me,

וַיְסַפֵּ֧ר שַֽׂר־הַמַּשְׁקִ֛ים אֶת־חֲלֹמ֖וֹ לְיוֹסֵ֑ף וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ בַּחֲלוֹמִ֕י וְהִנֵּה־גֶ֖פֶן לְפָנָֽי׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubagּe֖pen shsheloshsha֣h shsariygi֑m vehi֤y kepora֨chat֙ 'aleta֣h nitzּa֔hּ hibeshshi֥ylu 'ashshekּelote֖yha 'anabiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and on the vine were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms came out, and its clusters produced ripe grapes.

וּבַגֶּ֖פֶן שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה שָׂרִיגִ֑ם וְהִ֤יא כְפֹרַ֨חַת֙ עָלְתָ֣ה נִצָּ֔הּ הִבְשִׁ֥ילוּ אַשְׁכְּלֹתֶ֖יהָ עֲנָבִֽים׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vek֥os pּare'o֖h bּeyadi֑y va'eqּa֣ch 'et-haֽ'anabi֗ym vaֽ'eshsecha֤t 'otam֙ 'el-kּ֣os pּare'o֔h va'etּe֥n 'et-hakּ֖os 'al-kּa֥p pּare'oֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; so I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand."

וְכ֥וֹס פַּרְעֹ֖ה בְּיָדִ֑י וָאֶקַּ֣ח אֶת־הָֽעֲנָבִ֗ים וָֽאֶשְׂחַ֤ט אֹתָם֙ אֶל־כּ֣וֹס פַּרְעֹ֔ה וָאֶתֵּ֥ן אֶת־הַכּ֖וֹס עַל־כַּ֥ף פַּרְעֹֽה׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lo֙ yose֔p ze֖h pּiteron֑o shshelo֨shshet֙ hashsּa֣rigi֔ym shshelo֥shshet yami֖ym heֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph said to him, "This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ יוֹסֵ֔ף זֶ֖ה פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת֙ הַשָּׂ֣רִגִ֔ים שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים הֵֽם׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe'֣od ׀ shshelo֣shshet yami֗ym yishsּa֤ pare'oh֙ 'et-ro'shshe֔ka vahashshiֽybeka֖ 'al-kּanּe֑ka venatatּa֤ kos-pּare'oh֙ bּeyad֔o kּamּishshepּat֙ haֽri'shsh֔on 'ashshe֥r hayi֖yta mashsheqeֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Within three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, just as you used to do when you were his cupbearer.

בְּע֣וֹד ׀ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים יִשָּׂ֤א פַרְעֹה֙ אֶת־רֹאשֶׁ֔ךָ וַהֲשִֽׁיבְךָ֖ עַל־כַּנֶּ֑ךָ וְנָתַתָּ֤ כוֹס־פַּרְעֹה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ כַּמִּשְׁפָּט֙ הָֽרִאשׁ֔וֹן אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיִ֖יתָ מַשְׁקֵֽהוּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֧y 'im-zekaretּa֣niy 'itּeka֗ kּa'ashsher֙ yi֣ytab la֔ke ve'ashsiֽyta-nּa֥ 'imּadi֖y cha֑sed vehizekּaretּa֨niy֙ 'el-pּare'o֔h vehotze'ta֖niy min-habּa֥yit hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me; make mention of me to Pharaoh and bring me out of this house.

כִּ֧י אִם־זְכַרְתַּ֣נִי אִתְּךָ֗ כַּאֲשֶׁר֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ וְעָשִֽׂיתָ־נָּ֥א עִמָּדִ֖י חָ֑סֶד וְהִזְכַּרְתַּ֨נִי֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְהוֹצֵאתַ֖נִי מִן־הַבַּ֥יִת הַזֶּֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-gunּo֣b gּunּa֔betּiy me'e֖retz ha'iberi֑ym vegam-pּoh֙ lo'-'ashsi֣ytiֽy me'֔umah kּiֽy-shsam֥u 'oti֖y bּabּֽor׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also I have done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon."

כִּֽי־גֻנֹּ֣ב גֻּנַּ֔בְתִּי מֵאֶ֖רֶץ הָעִבְרִ֑ים וְגַם־פֹּה֙ לֹא־עָשִׂ֣יתִֽי מְא֔וּמָה כִּֽי־שָׂמ֥וּ אֹתִ֖י בַּבּֽוֹר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥re shsar-ha'opi֖ym kּi֣y t֣ob pּata֑r vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-yose֔p 'ap-'aniy֙ bּachalomi֔y vehinּe֗h shsheloshsha֛h salּe֥y chori֖y 'al-ro'shshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, "I also had a dream, and behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head.

וַיַּ֥רְא שַׂר־הָאֹפִ֖ים כִּ֣י ט֣וֹב פָּתָ֑ר וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף אַף־אֲנִי֙ בַּחֲלוֹמִ֔י וְהִנֵּ֗ה שְׁלֹשָׁ֛ה סַלֵּ֥י חֹרִ֖י עַל־רֹאשִֽׁי׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubasּa֣l haֽ'eley֔on mikּo֛l ma'aka֥l pּare'o֖h ma'ashse֣h 'ope֑h veha'֗op 'oke֥l 'ota֛m min-hasּa֖l me'a֥l ro'shshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In the uppermost basket there were all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them out of the basket on my head."

וּבַסַּ֣ל הָֽעֶלְי֔וֹן מִכֹּ֛ל מַאֲכַ֥ל פַּרְעֹ֖ה מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה אֹפֶ֑ה וְהָע֗וֹף אֹכֵ֥ל אֹתָ֛ם מִן־הַסַּ֖ל מֵעַ֥ל רֹאשִֽׁי׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'an yosep֙ vayּo֔'mer ze֖h pּiteron֑o shshelo֨shshet֙ hasּalּi֔ym shshelo֥shshet yami֖ym heֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph answered, "This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days.

וַיַּ֤עַן יוֹסֵף֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר זֶ֖ה פִּתְרֹנ֑וֹ שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת֙ הַסַּלִּ֔ים שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים הֵֽם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּe'֣od ׀ shshelo֣shshet yami֗ym yishsּa֨ pare'o֤h 'et-roֽ'shsheka֙ meֽ'ale֔yka vetala֥h 'oteka֖ 'al-'e֑tz ve'aka֥l ha'֛op 'et-bּeshsareka֖ me'aleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Within three days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you."

בְּע֣וֹד ׀ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת יָמִ֗ים יִשָּׂ֨א פַרְעֹ֤ה אֶת־רֹֽאשְׁךָ֙ מֵֽעָלֶ֔יךָ וְתָלָ֥ה אוֹתְךָ֖ עַל־עֵ֑ץ וְאָכַ֥ל הָע֛וֹף אֶת־בְּשָׂרְךָ֖ מֵעָלֶֽיךָ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֗y y֚om hulּe֣det 'et-pּare'o֔h vayּa֥'ashs mishshetּe֖h lekal-'abada֑yv vayּishsּa֞ 'et-ro֣'shsh ׀ shsa֣r hamּashsheqi֗ym ve'et-ro֛'shsh shsa֥r ha'opi֖ym bּet֥oke 'abadaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker among his servants.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֗י י֚וֹם הֻלֶּ֣דֶת אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיַּ֥עַשׂ מִשְׁתֶּ֖ה לְכָל־עֲבָדָ֑יו וַיִּשָּׂ֞א אֶת־רֹ֣אשׁ ׀ שַׂ֣ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֗ים וְאֶת־רֹ֛אשׁ שַׂ֥ר הָאֹפִ֖ים בְּת֥וֹךְ עֲבָדָֽיו׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛shsheb 'et-shsa֥r hamּashsheqi֖ym 'al-mashsheqe֑hu vayּitּe֥n hakּ֖os 'al-kּa֥p pּare'oֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He restored the chief cupbearer to his position again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand;

וַיָּ֛שֶׁב אֶת־שַׂ֥ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֖ים עַל־מַשְׁקֵ֑הוּ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן הַכּ֖וֹס עַל־כַּ֥ף פַּרְעֹֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛t shsa֥r ha'opi֖ym tּala֑h kּa'ashshe֥r pּata֛r lahe֖m yoseֽp׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but he hanged the chief baker, just as Joseph had interpreted to them.

וְאֵ֛ת שַׂ֥ר הָאֹפִ֖ים תָּלָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר פָּתַ֛ר לָהֶ֖ם יוֹסֵֽף׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-zaka֧r shsaֽr-hamּashsheqi֛ym 'et-yose֖p vayּishshekּacheֽhu׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

וְלֹֽא־זָכַ֧ר שַֽׂר־הַמַּשְׁקִ֛ים אֶת־יוֹסֵ֖ף וַיִּשְׁכָּחֵֽהוּ׃פ
