Chapter 41

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y miqּe֖tz shshenata֣yim yami֑ym upare'o֣h chole֔m vehinּe֖h 'ome֥d 'al-haye'oֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)At the end of two full years, Pharaoh had a dream: behold, he was standing by the river.

וַיְהִ֕י מִקֵּ֖ץ שְׁנָתַ֣יִם יָמִ֑ים וּפַרְעֹ֣ה חֹלֵ֔ם וְהִנֵּ֖ה עֹמֵ֥ד עַל־הַיְאֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h min-haye'o֗r 'olot֙ shshe֣ba pּar֔ot yep֥ot mare'e֖h uberiy'o֣t bּashsa֑r vatּire'e֖ynah bּa'aֽchu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, seven cows came up out of the river, sleek and fat, and they grazed in the marsh grass.

וְהִנֵּ֣ה מִן־הַיְאֹ֗ר עֹלֹת֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פָּר֔וֹת יְפ֥וֹת מַרְאֶ֖ה וּבְרִיאֹ֣ת בָּשָׂ֑ר וַתִּרְעֶ֖ינָה בָּאָֽחוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֞h shshe֧ba pּar֣ot 'acher֗ot 'ol֤ot 'achareyhen֙ min-haye'o֔r ra'֥ot mare'e֖h vedaqּ֣ot bּashsa֑r vaֽtּa'amo֛denah 'e֥tzel hapּar֖ot 'al-shsepa֥t haye'oֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then seven other cows came up after them out of the river, ugly and thin, and stood by the other cows on the bank of the river.

וְהִנֵּ֞ה שֶׁ֧בַע פָּר֣וֹת אֲחֵר֗וֹת עֹל֤וֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶן֙ מִן־הַיְאֹ֔ר רָע֥וֹת מַרְאֶ֖ה וְדַקּ֣וֹת בָּשָׂ֑ר וַֽתַּעֲמֹ֛דְנָה אֵ֥צֶל הַפָּר֖וֹת עַל־שְׂפַ֥ת הַיְאֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo'ka֣lenah hapּar֗ot ra'֤ot hamּare'eh֙ vedaqּo֣t habּashsa֔r 'e֚t shshe֣ba hapּar֔ot yepo֥t hamּare'e֖h vehabּeriy'o֑t vayּiyqa֖tz pּare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The ugly and thin cows ate up the seven sleek and fat cows. Then Pharaoh awoke.

וַתֹּאכַ֣לְנָה הַפָּר֗וֹת רָע֤וֹת הַמַּרְאֶה֙ וְדַקֹּ֣ת הַבָּשָׂ֔ר אֵ֚ת שֶׁ֣בַע הַפָּר֔וֹת יְפֹ֥ת הַמַּרְאֶ֖ה וְהַבְּרִיאֹ֑ת וַיִּיקַ֖ץ פַּרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiyshsha֕n vaֽyּachalo֖m shsheni֑yt vehinּe֣h ׀ shshe֣ba shshibּoli֗ym 'ol֛ot bּeqane֥h 'echa֖d bּeriy'֥ot vetobֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He slept and dreamed a second time: behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, healthy and good.

וַיִּישָׁ֕ן וַֽיַּחֲלֹ֖ם שֵׁנִ֑ית וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ שֶׁ֣בַע שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים עֹל֛וֹת בְּקָנֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד בְּרִיא֥וֹת וְטֹבֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּeh֙ shshe֣ba shshibּoli֔ym dּaqּ֖ot ushshedupo֣t qadi֑ym tzomech֖ot 'achareyheֽn׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then seven heads of grain, thin and scorched by the east wind, sprouted after them.

וְהִנֵּה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים דַּקּ֖וֹת וּשְׁדוּפֹ֣ת קָדִ֑ים צֹמְח֖וֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּibela֨'enah֙ hashshּibּoli֣ym hadּaqּ֔ot 'e֚t shshe֣ba haֽshshּibּoli֔ym habּeriy'֖ot vehamּele'֑ot vayּiyqa֥tz pּare'o֖h vehinּe֥h chalֽom׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy and full ears. Then Pharaoh awoke, and behold, it was a dream.

וַתִּבְלַ֨עְנָה֙ הַשִּׁבֳּלִ֣ים הַדַּקּ֔וֹת אֵ֚ת שֶׁ֣בַע הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִ֔ים הַבְּרִיא֖וֹת וְהַמְּלֵא֑וֹת וַיִּיקַ֥ץ פַּרְעֹ֖ה וְהִנֵּ֥ה חֲלֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y babּo֨qer֙ vatּipּa֣'em ruch֔o vayּishshela֗ch vayּiqera֛ 'et-kּal-charetumּe֥y mitzera֖yim ve'et-kּal-chakame֑yha vayesapּe֨r pּare'o֤h lahem֙ 'et-chalom֔o ve'eyn-pּote֥r 'ota֖m lepare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he sent and called for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but there was no one who could interpret them to him.

וַיְהִ֤י בַבֹּ֨קֶר֙ וַתִּפָּ֣עֶם רוּח֔וֹ וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח וַיִּקְרָ֛א אֶת־כָּל־חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם וְאֶת־כָּל־חֲכָמֶ֑יהָ וַיְסַפֵּ֨ר פַּרְעֹ֤ה לָהֶם֙ אֶת־חֲלֹמ֔וֹ וְאֵין־פּוֹתֵ֥ר אוֹתָ֖ם לְפַרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּer֙ shsa֣r hamּashsheqi֔ym 'et-pּare'o֖h le'mo֑r 'et-chata'a֕y 'ani֖y mazekּi֥yr hayּֽom׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then the chief cupbearer spoke to Pharaoh, saying, "I remember my faults today.

וַיְדַבֵּר֙ שַׂ֣ר הַמַּשְׁקִ֔ים אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אֶת־חֲטָאַ֕י אֲנִ֖י מַזְכִּ֥יר הַיּֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): pּare'o֖h qatza֣p 'al-'abada֑yv vayּitּe֨n 'oti֜y bּemishshema֗r bּe֚yt shsa֣r hatּabּachi֔ym 'oti֕y ve'e֖t shsa֥r ha'opiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh was angry with his servants, and put me in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, along with the chief baker.

פַּרְעֹ֖ה קָצַ֣ף עַל־עֲבָדָ֑יו וַיִּתֵּ֨ן אֹתִ֜י בְּמִשְׁמַ֗ר בֵּ֚ית שַׂ֣ר הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים אֹתִ֕י וְאֵ֖ת שַׂ֥ר הָאֹפִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּaֽchalema֥h chal֛om bּela֥yelah 'echa֖d 'ani֣y vah֑u 'i֛yshsh kּepiter֥on chalom֖o chalaֽmenu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)We both had a dream in one night. We dreamed, each man according to the interpretation of his dream.

וַנַּֽחַלְמָ֥ה חֲל֛וֹם בְּלַ֥יְלָה אֶחָ֖ד אֲנִ֣י וָה֑וּא אִ֛ישׁ כְּפִתְר֥וֹן חֲלֹמ֖וֹ חָלָֽמְנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha֨m 'itּa֜nu na֣'ar 'iberi֗y 'e֚bed leshsa֣r hatּabּachi֔ym vanּe֨sapּer-l֔o vayּipetּar-la֖nu 'et-chalomote֑ynu 'i֥yshsh kּachalom֖o pּataֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)There was a young Hebrew man there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his own dream.

וְשָׁ֨ם אִתָּ֜נוּ נַ֣עַר עִבְרִ֗י עֶ֚בֶד לְשַׂ֣ר הַטַּבָּחִ֔ים וַנְּ֨סַפֶּר־ל֔וֹ וַיִּפְתָּר־לָ֖נוּ אֶת־חֲלֹמֹתֵ֑ינוּ אִ֥ישׁ כַּחֲלֹמ֖וֹ פָּתָֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y kּa'ashshe֥r pּaֽtar-la֖nu kּe֣n haya֑h 'oti֛y heshshi֥yb 'al-kּanּi֖y ve'ot֥o talaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And it happened just as he interpreted to us: he restored me to my office, and he hanged the other."

וַיְהִ֛י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר פָּֽתַר־לָ֖נוּ כֵּ֣ן הָיָ֑ה אֹתִ֛י הֵשִׁ֥יב עַל־כַּנִּ֖י וְאֹת֥וֹ תָלָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch pּare'oh֙ vayּiqera֣ 'et-yose֔p vayeriytzu֖hu min-habּ֑or vayegalּach֙ vayechalּe֣p shsimelota֔yv vayּabo֖ 'el-pּare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Pharaoh sent and called for Joseph, and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon. He shaved himself, changed his clothes, and came in before Pharaoh.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח פַּרְעֹה֙ וַיִּקְרָ֣א אֶת־יוֹסֵ֔ף וַיְרִיצֻ֖הוּ מִן־הַבּ֑וֹר וַיְגַלַּח֙ וַיְחַלֵּ֣ף שִׂמְלֹתָ֔יו וַיָּבֹ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer pּare'oh֙ 'el-yose֔p chal֣om chala֔metּiy upote֖r 'e֣yn 'ot֑o va'ani֗y shshama֤'etּiy 'ale֨yka֙ le'mo֔r tּishshema֥ chal֖om lipetּo֥r 'otֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I have had a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it. I have heard it said of you that when you hear a dream, you can interpret it."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף חֲל֣וֹם חָלַ֔מְתִּי וּפֹתֵ֖ר אֵ֣ין אֹת֑וֹ וַאֲנִ֗י שָׁמַ֤עְתִּי עָלֶ֨יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר תִּשְׁמַ֥ע חֲל֖וֹם לִפְתֹּ֥ר אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨'an yose֧p 'et-pּare'o֛h le'mo֖r bּile'ada֑y 'elohi֕ym ya'ane֖h 'et-shshel֥om pּare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, "It is not in me; God will give Pharaoh an answer of peace."

וַיַּ֨עַן יוֹסֵ֧ף אֶת־פַּרְעֹ֛ה לֵאמֹ֖ר בִּלְעָדָ֑י אֱלֹהִ֕ים יַעֲנֶ֖ה אֶת־שְׁל֥וֹם פַּרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֥r pּare'o֖h 'el-yose֑p bּachalomi֕y hineni֥y 'ome֖d 'al-shsepa֥t haye'oֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to Joseph, "In my dream, behold, I stood on the bank of the river;

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף בַּחֲלֹמִ֕י הִנְנִ֥י עֹמֵ֖ד עַל־שְׂפַ֥ת הַיְאֹֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h min-haye'o֗r 'olot֙ shshe֣ba pּar֔ot bּeriy'֥ot bּashsa֖r viypo֣t tּo֑'ar vatּire'e֖ynah bּa'aֽchu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and behold, seven cows came up out of the river, fat and sleek, and they grazed in the marsh grass.

וְהִנֵּ֣ה מִן־הַיְאֹ֗ר עֹלֹת֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פָּר֔וֹת בְּרִיא֥וֹת בָּשָׂ֖ר וִיפֹ֣ת תֹּ֑אַר וַתִּרְעֶ֖ינָה בָּאָֽחוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֞h shsheֽba'-pּar֤ot 'acherot֙ 'ol֣ot 'achareyhe֔n dּalּ֨ot vera'֥ot tּo֛'ar me'o֖d veraqּ֣ot bּashsa֑r loֽ'-ra'i֧ytiy kahe֛nּah bּekal-'e֥retz mitzera֖yim laroֽ'a׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then seven other cows came up after them, poor and very ugly and thin—such as I have never seen in all the land of Egypt for ugliness.

וְהִנֵּ֞ה שֶֽׁבַע־פָּר֤וֹת אֲחֵרוֹת֙ עֹל֣וֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן דַּלּ֨וֹת וְרָע֥וֹת תֹּ֛אַר מְאֹ֖ד וְרַקּ֣וֹת בָּשָׂ֑ר לֹֽא־רָאִ֧יתִי כָהֵ֛נָּה בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם לָרֹֽעַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo'ka֨lenah֙ hapּar֔ot haraqּ֖ot vehara'֑ot 'e֣t shshe֧ba hapּar֛ot hari'shshon֖ot habּeriy'oֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The thin and ugly cows ate up the first seven fat cows.

וַתֹּאכַ֨לְנָה֙ הַפָּר֔וֹת הָרַקּ֖וֹת וְהָרָע֑וֹת אֵ֣ת שֶׁ֧בַע הַפָּר֛וֹת הָרִאשֹׁנ֖וֹת הַבְּרִיאֹֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo֣'nah 'el-qirebּe֗nah velo֤ noda'֙ kּiy-ba֣'u 'el-qirebּe֔nah umare'eyhe֣n ra֔ kּa'ashshe֖r bּatּechilּa֑h va'iyqaֽtz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When they had eaten them up, it could not be told that they had eaten them, for they were still as ugly as at the beginning. Then I awoke.

וַתָּבֹ֣אנָה אֶל־קִרְבֶּ֗נָה וְלֹ֤א נוֹדַע֙ כִּי־בָ֣אוּ אֶל־קִרְבֶּ֔נָה וּמַרְאֵיהֶ֣ן רַ֔ע כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר בַּתְּחִלָּ֑ה וָאִיקָֽץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'e֖re bּachalomi֑y vehinּe֣h ׀ shshe֣ba shshibּoli֗ym 'olo֛t bּeqane֥h 'echa֖d mele'o֥t vetobֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)I also saw in my dream: behold, seven heads of grain came up on one stalk, full and good.

וָאֵ֖רֶא בַּחֲלֹמִ֑י וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ שֶׁ֣בַע שִׁבֳּלִ֗ים עֹלֹ֛ת בְּקָנֶ֥ה אֶחָ֖ד מְלֵאֹ֥ת וְטֹבֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּeh֙ shshe֣ba shshibּoli֔ym tzenum֥ot dּaqּ֖ot shshedup֣ot qadi֑ym tzomech֖ot 'achareyheֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then seven heads of grain, withered, thin, and scorched by the east wind, sprouted after them.

וְהִנֵּה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע שִׁבֳּלִ֔ים צְנֻמ֥וֹת דַּקּ֖וֹת שְׁדֻפ֣וֹת קָדִ֑ים צֹמְח֖וֹת אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּibela֨'ena֙ hashshibּoli֣ym hadּaqּo֔t 'e֛t shshe֥ba haֽshshibּoli֖ym hatּob֑ot vaֽ'omar֙ 'el-haֽcharetumּi֔ym ve'e֥yn magּi֖yd liֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven good heads of grain. I told this to the magicians, but there was no one who could explain it to me."

וַתִּבְלַ֨עְןָ֙ הָשִׁבֳּלִ֣ים הַדַּקֹּ֔ת אֵ֛ת שֶׁ֥בַע הַֽשִׁבֳּלִ֖ים הַטֹּב֑וֹת וָֽאֹמַר֙ אֶל־הַֽחַרְטֻמִּ֔ים וְאֵ֥ין מַגִּ֖יד לִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yosep֙ 'el-pּare'o֔h chal֥om pּare'o֖h 'echa֣d h֑u 'e֣t 'ashshe֧r ha'elohi֛ym 'oshse֖h higּi֥yd lepare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph said to Pharaoh, "The dreams of Pharaoh are one. God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יוֹסֵף֙ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֔ה חֲל֥וֹם פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶחָ֣ד ה֑וּא אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֧ר הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים עֹשֶׂ֖ה הִגִּ֥יד לְפַרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshe֧ba pּaro֣t hatּobo֗t shshe֤ba shshaniym֙ he֔nּah veshshe֤ba haֽshshּibּoliym֙ hatּobo֔t shshe֥ba shshani֖ym he֑nּah chal֖om 'echa֥d hֽu'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The seven good cows are seven years, and the seven good heads of grain are seven years; the dream is one.

שֶׁ֧בַע פָּרֹ֣ת הַטֹּבֹ֗ת שֶׁ֤בַע שָׁנִים֙ הֵ֔נָּה וְשֶׁ֤בַע הַֽשִּׁבֳּלִים֙ הַטֹּבֹ֔ת שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים הֵ֑נָּה חֲל֖וֹם אֶחָ֥ד הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshe֣ba ha֠pּarot haֽraqּ֨ot vehara'o֜t ha'olo֣t 'achareyhe֗n shshe֤ba shshaniym֙ he֔nּah veshshe֤ba haֽshshibּoliym֙ hareq֔ot shshedup֖ot haqּadi֑ym yihey֕u shshe֖ba shshene֥y ra'aֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The seven thin and ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and the seven empty heads of grain scorched by the east wind are seven years of famine.

וְשֶׁ֣בַע הַ֠פָּרוֹת הָֽרַקּ֨וֹת וְהָרָעֹ֜ת הָעֹלֹ֣ת אַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ן שֶׁ֤בַע שָׁנִים֙ הֵ֔נָּה וְשֶׁ֤בַע הַֽשִׁבֳּלִים֙ הָרֵק֔וֹת שְׁדֻפ֖וֹת הַקָּדִ֑ים יִהְי֕וּ שֶׁ֖בַע שְׁנֵ֥י רָעָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): h֣u hadּaba֔r 'ashshe֥r dּibּa֖retּiy 'el-pּare'o֑h 'ashshe֧r ha'elohi֛ym 'oshse֖h here'a֥h 'et-pּare'oֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)This is just as I said to Pharaoh: God has shown Pharaoh what He is about to do.

ה֣וּא הַדָּבָ֔ר אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבַּ֖רְתִּי אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֧ר הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים עֹשֶׂ֖ה הֶרְאָ֥ה אֶת־פַּרְעֹֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּe֛h shshe֥ba shshani֖ym bּa'֑ot shsaba֥ gּad֖ol bּekal-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, seven years of great abundance are coming throughout all the land of Egypt.

הִנֵּ֛ה שֶׁ֥בַע שָׁנִ֖ים בָּא֑וֹת שָׂבָ֥ע גָּד֖וֹל בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠qamu shshe֜ba shshene֤y ra'ab֙ 'achareyhe֔n venishshekּa֥ch kּal-hashsּaba֖ bּe'e֣retz mitzera֑yim vekilּa֥h hara'a֖b 'et-ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But after them seven years of famine will arise, and all the abundance in the land of Egypt will be forgotten. The famine will consume the land,

וְ֠קָמוּ שֶׁ֜בַע שְׁנֵ֤י רָעָב֙ אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ן וְנִשְׁכַּ֥ח כָּל־הַשָּׂבָ֖ע בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְכִלָּ֥ה הָרָעָ֖ב אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-yiuada֤ hashsּaba'֙ bּa'a֔retz mipּene֛y hara'a֥b hah֖u 'acharey-ke֑n kּiֽy-kabe֥d h֖u me'oֽd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)and the abundance will not be remembered in the land because of the famine that follows, for it will be very severe.

וְלֹֽא־יִוָּדַ֤ע הַשָּׂבָע֙ בָּאָ֔רֶץ מִפְּנֵ֛י הָרָעָ֥ב הַה֖וּא אַחֲרֵי־כֵ֑ן כִּֽי־כָבֵ֥ד ה֖וּא מְאֹֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'a֨l hishshּan֧ot hachal֛om 'el-pּare'o֖h pּa'ama֑yim kּiֽy-nak֤on hadּabar֙ me'i֣m ha'elohi֔ym umemahe֥r ha'elohi֖ym la'ashsotֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The dream was doubled to Pharaoh because the matter is established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.

וְעַ֨ל הִשָּׁנ֧וֹת הַחֲל֛וֹם אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֖ה פַּעֲמָ֑יִם כִּֽי־נָכ֤וֹן הַדָּבָר֙ מֵעִ֣ם הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים וּמְמַהֵ֥ר הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים לַעֲשֹׂתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ yere֣ pare'o֔h 'i֖yshsh nab֣on vechaka֑m viyshshiyte֖hu 'al-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now therefore, let Pharaoh look for a man of discernment and wisdom, and set him over the land of Egypt.

וְעַתָּה֙ יֵרֶ֣א פַרְעֹ֔ה אִ֖ישׁ נָב֣וֹן וְחָכָ֑ם וִישִׁיתֵ֖הוּ עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ya'ashse֣h pare'o֔h veyapeqe֥d pּeqidi֖ym 'al-ha'a֑retz vechimּeshsh֙ 'et-'e֣retz mitzera֔yim bּeshshe֖ba shshene֥y hashsּabaֽ'׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Let Pharaoh do this, and let him appoint overseers over the land to take a fifth part of the produce of the land of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.

יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה פַרְעֹ֔ה וְיַפְקֵ֥ד פְּקִדִ֖ים עַל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְחִמֵּשׁ֙ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם בְּשֶׁ֖בַע שְׁנֵ֥י הַשָּׂבָֽע׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyiqebּetz֗u 'et-kּal-'o֨kel֙ hashshּani֣ym hatּobo֔t habּa'o֖t ha'e֑lּeh veyitzebּeru-ba֞r tּa֧chat yad-pּare'o֛h 'o֥kel bּe'ari֖ym veshshamaֽru׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Let them gather all the food of these good years that are coming and store up grain under the authority of Pharaoh for food in the cities, and let them keep it.

וְיִקְבְּצ֗וּ אֶת־כָּל־אֹ֨כֶל֙ הַשָּׁנִ֣ים הַטֹּבֹ֔ת הַבָּאֹ֖ת הָאֵ֑לֶּה וְיִצְבְּרוּ־בָ֞ר תַּ֧חַת יַד־פַּרְעֹ֛ה אֹ֥כֶל בֶּעָרִ֖ים וְשָׁמָֽרוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֨h ha'o֤kel lepiqּadon֙ la'a֔retz leshshe֨ba'֙ shshene֣y hara'a֔b 'ashshe֥r tּiheye֖yna bּe'e֣retz mitzera֑yim veloֽ'-tikּare֥t ha'a֖retz bּara'aֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)That food shall be a reserve for the land against the seven years of famine which shall be in the land of Egypt, so that the land does not perish through the famine."

וְהָיָ֨ה הָאֹ֤כֶל לְפִקָּדוֹן֙ לָאָ֔רֶץ לְשֶׁ֨בַע֙ שְׁנֵ֣י הָרָעָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּהְיֶ֖יןָ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם וְלֹֽא־תִכָּרֵ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ בָּרָעָֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiyta֥b hadּaba֖r bּe'eyne֣y pare'o֑h ube'eyne֖y kּal-'abadaֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The proposal was good in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of all his servants.

וַיִּיטַ֥ב הַדָּבָ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וּבְעֵינֵ֖י כָּל־עֲבָדָֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer pּare'o֖h 'el-'abada֑yv hanimetza֣ kaze֔h 'i֕yshsh 'ashshe֛r r֥ucha 'elohi֖ym bּֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to his servants, "Can we find anyone like this man, in whom is the Spirit of God?"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶל־עֲבָדָ֑יו הֲנִמְצָ֣א כָזֶ֔ה אִ֕ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֛ר ר֥וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer pּare'oh֙ 'el-yose֔p 'achare֨y hodi֧y'a 'elohi֛ym 'oteka֖ 'et-kּal-zo֑'t 'eyn-nab֥on vechaka֖m kּamֽoka׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Since God has shown you all this, there is no one as discerning and wise as you.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף אַחֲרֵ֨י הוֹדִ֧יעַ אֱלֹהִ֛ים אוֹתְךָ֖ אֶת־כָּל־זֹ֑את אֵין־נָב֥וֹן וְחָכָ֖ם כָּמֽוֹךָ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): atּah֙ tּiheye֣h 'al-bּeyti֔y ve'al-pּi֖yka yishshּa֣q kּal-'amּi֑y ra֥q hakּisּe֖ 'egedּa֥l mimּeֽkּa׃

Edified Edition (EDE)You shall be over my house, and all my people shall be ruled according to your word. Only in the throne will I be greater than you."

אַתָּה֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה עַל־בֵּיתִ֔י וְעַל־פִּ֖יךָ יִשַּׁ֣ק כָּל־עַמִּ֑י רַ֥ק הַכִּסֵּ֖א אֶגְדַּ֥ל מִמֶּֽךָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer pּare'o֖h 'el-yose֑p re'eh֙ nata֣tּiy 'oֽteka֔ 'a֖l kּal-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to Joseph, "Behold, I have set you over all the land of Egypt."

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֖ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף רְאֵה֙ נָתַ֣תִּי אֹֽתְךָ֔ עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨sar pּare'o֤h 'et-tabּa'etּo֙ me'a֣l yad֔o vayּitּe֥n 'ota֖hּ 'al-ya֣d yose֑p vayּalebּe֤shsh 'oto֙ bּigedey-shshe֔shsh vayּa֛shsem rebi֥d hazּaha֖b 'al-tzaua'rֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand and put it on Joseph’s hand; he arrayed him in robes of fine linen and put a gold chain around his neck.

וַיָּ֨סַר פַּרְעֹ֤ה אֶת־טַבַּעְתּוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל יָד֔וֹ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן אֹתָ֖הּ עַל־יַ֣ד יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיַּלְבֵּ֤שׁ אֹתוֹ֙ בִּגְדֵי־שֵׁ֔שׁ וַיָּ֛שֶׂם רְבִ֥ד הַזָּהָ֖ב עַל־צַוָּארֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּarekּe֣b 'ot֗o bּemirekּe֤bet hamּishsheneh֙ 'ashsher-l֔o vayּiqere'֥u lepana֖yv 'abere֑ke venat֣on 'ot֔o 'a֖l kּal-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He had him ride in the second chariot which he had, and they cried out before him, "Bow the knee!" Thus he set him over all the land of Egypt.

וַיַּרְכֵּ֣ב אֹת֗וֹ בְּמִרְכֶּ֤בֶת הַמִּשְׁנֶה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ וַיִּקְרְא֥וּ לְפָנָ֖יו אַבְרֵ֑ךְ וְנָת֣וֹן אֹת֔וֹ עַ֖ל כָּל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer pּare'o֛h 'el-yose֖p 'ani֣y pare'o֑h ubile'ade֗yka loֽ'-yari֨ym 'i֧yshsh 'et-yad֛o ve'et-ragel֖o bּekal-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh said to Joseph, "I am Pharaoh, and without your consent no man shall lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt."

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֛ה אֶל־יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲנִ֣י פַרְעֹ֑ה וּבִלְעָדֶ֗יךָ לֹֽא־יָרִ֨ים אִ֧ישׁ אֶת־יָד֛וֹ וְאֶת־רַגְל֖וֹ בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ pare'o֣h shshem-yosep֮ tzaֽpena֣t pּa'enecha֒ vayּitּen-l֣o 'et-'aֽsena֗t bּat-pּ֥otiy pe֛ra kּohe֥n 'o֖n le'ishshּa֑h vayּetze֥ yose֖p 'al-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Pharaoh called Joseph’s name Zaphenath-Paneah; and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, as a wife. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א פַרְעֹ֣ה שֵׁם־יוֹסֵף֮ צָֽפְנַ֣ת פַּעְנֵחַ֒ וַיִּתֶּן־ל֣וֹ אֶת־אָֽסְנַ֗ת בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי פֶ֛רַע כֹּהֵ֥ן אֹ֖ן לְאִשָּׁ֑ה וַיֵּצֵ֥א יוֹסֵ֖ף עַל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyosep֙ bּen-shsheloshshi֣ym shshana֔h bּe'amed֕o lipene֖y pּare'o֣h meֽleke-mitzera֑yim vayּetze֤ yosep֙ milּipene֣y pare'o֔h vaֽyּa'ebo֖r bּekal-'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh and traveled throughout all the land of Egypt.

וְיוֹסֵף֙ בֶּן־שְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים שָׁנָ֔ה בְּעָמְד֕וֹ לִפְנֵ֖י פַּרְעֹ֣ה מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרָ֑יִם וַיֵּצֵ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ מִלִּפְנֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה וַֽיַּעְבֹ֖ר בְּכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa֣'ashs ha'a֔retz bּeshshe֖ba shshene֣y hashsּaba֑ liqematziֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)During the seven years of abundance, the earth produced plentifully.

וַתַּ֣עַשׂ הָאָ֔רֶץ בְּשֶׁ֖בַע שְׁנֵ֣י הַשָּׂבָ֑ע לִקְמָצִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqebּo֞tz 'et-kּal-'o֣kel ׀ shshe֣ba shshani֗ym 'ashshe֤r hayu֙ bּe'e֣retz mitzera֔yim vayּitּen-'o֖kel bּe'ari֑ym 'o֧kel shsedeh-ha'i֛yr 'ashshe֥r sebiybote֖yha nata֥n bּetokaֽhּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt and stored the food in the cities; the food of the fields surrounding each city he stored within it.

וַיִּקְבֹּ֞ץ אֶת־כָּל־אֹ֣כֶל ׀ שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָיוּ֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּתֶּן־אֹ֖כֶל בֶּעָרִ֑ים אֹ֧כֶל שְׂדֵה־הָעִ֛יר אֲשֶׁ֥ר סְבִיבֹתֶ֖יהָ נָתַ֥ן בְּתוֹכָֽהּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitzebּo֨r yose֥p bּa֛r kּech֥ol hayּa֖m harebּe֣h me'o֑d 'a֛d kּiy-chada֥l lisepּo֖r kּiy-'e֥yn misepּaֽr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph stored up grain as the sand of the sea, in such great quantity that he stopped counting, for it was beyond measure.

וַיִּצְבֹּ֨ר יוֹסֵ֥ף בָּ֛ר כְּח֥וֹל הַיָּ֖ם הַרְבֵּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד עַ֛ד כִּי־חָדַ֥ל לִסְפֹּ֖ר כִּי־אֵ֥ין מִסְפָּֽר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): uleyose֤p yulּad֙ shshene֣y bani֔ym bּete֥rem tּab֖o shshena֣t hara'a֑b 'ashshe֤r yaֽledah-lּo֙ 'aֽsena֔t bּat-pּ֥otiy pe֖ra kּohe֥n 'ֽon׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Two sons were born to Joseph before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, bore to him.

וּלְיוֹסֵ֤ף יֻלַּד֙ שְׁנֵ֣י בָנִ֔ים בְּטֶ֥רֶם תָּב֖וֹא שְׁנַ֣ת הָרָעָ֑ב אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָֽלְדָה־לּוֹ֙ אָֽסְנַ֔ת בַּת־פּ֥וֹטִי פֶ֖רַע כֹּהֵ֥ן אֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֥ yose֛p 'et-shshe֥m habּek֖or menashshּe֑h kּiֽy-nashshּa֤niy 'elohiym֙ 'et-kּal-'amali֔y ve'e֖t kּal-bּe֥yt 'abiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph named the firstborn Manasseh, saying, "For God has made me forget all my toil and all my father's house."

וַיִּקְרָ֥א יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־שֵׁ֥ם הַבְּכ֖וֹר מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה כִּֽי־נַשַּׁ֤נִי אֱלֹהִים֙ אֶת־כָּל־עֲמָלִ֔י וְאֵ֖ת כָּל־בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛t shshe֥m hashshּeni֖y qara֣ 'epera֑yim kּiֽy-hipera֥niy 'elohi֖ym bּe'e֥retz 'aneyiֽy׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The name of the second he called Ephraim, saying, "For God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction."

וְאֵ֛ת שֵׁ֥ם הַשֵּׁנִ֖י קָרָ֣א אֶפְרָ֑יִם כִּֽי־הִפְרַ֥נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּאֶ֥רֶץ עָנְיִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּikele֕ynah shshe֖ba shshene֣y hashsּaba֑ 'ashshe֥r haya֖h bּe'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The seven years of abundance in the land of Egypt came to an end.

וַתִּכְלֶ֕ינָה שֶׁ֖בַע שְׁנֵ֣י הַשָּׂבָ֑ע אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּechilּe֜ynah shshe֣ba shshene֤y hara'ab֙ lab֔o kּa'ashshe֖r 'ama֣r yose֑p vayehi֤y ra'ab֙ bּekal-ha֣'aratz֔ot ubekal-'e֥retz mitzera֖yim ha֥yah laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the seven years of famine began to come, just as Joseph had said. There was famine in all lands, but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

וַתְּחִלֶּ֜ינָה שֶׁ֣בַע שְׁנֵ֤י הָרָעָב֙ לָב֔וֹא כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֣ר יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְהִ֤י רָעָב֙ בְּכָל־הָ֣אֲרָצ֔וֹת וּבְכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרַ֖יִם הָ֥יָה לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּire'ab֙ kּal-'e֣retz mitzera֔yim vayּitze'a֥q ha'a֛m 'el-pּare'o֖h lalּa֑chem vayּo֨'mer pּare'o֤h lekal-mitzera֨yim֙ lek֣u 'el-yose֔p 'ashsher-yo'ma֥r lake֖m tּa'ashsֽu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread. Pharaoh said to all the Egyptians, "Go to Joseph; whatever he says to you, do."

וַתִּרְעַב֙ כָּל־אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיִּצְעַ֥ק הָעָ֛ם אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֖ה לַלָּ֑חֶם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר פַּרְעֹ֤ה לְכָל־מִצְרַ֨יִם֙ לְכ֣וּ אֶל־יוֹסֵ֔ף אֲשֶׁר־יֹאמַ֥ר לָכֶ֖ם תַּעֲשֽׂוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehara'a֣b haya֔h 'a֖l kּal-pּene֣y ha'a֑retz vayּipetּa֨ch yose֜p 'eֽt-kּal-'ashshe֤r bּahem֙ vayּishshebּo֣r lemitzera֔yim vayּecheza֥q haֽra'a֖b bּe'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The famine was over all the face of the earth. Then Joseph opened all the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians; and the famine became severe in the land of Egypt.

וְהָרָעָ֣ב הָיָ֔ה עַ֖ל כָּל־פְּנֵ֣י הָאָ֑רֶץ וַיִּפְתַּ֨ח יוֹסֵ֜ף אֶֽת־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּהֶם֙ וַיִּשְׁבֹּ֣ר לְמִצְרַ֔יִם וַיֶּחֱזַ֥ק הָֽרָעָ֖ב בְּאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-ha'a֨retz֙ bּa֣'u mitzera֔yemah lishshebּo֖r 'el-yose֑p kּiֽy-chaza֥q hara'a֖b bּekal-ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was severe in all the earth.

וְכָל־הָאָ֨רֶץ֙ בָּ֣אוּ מִצְרַ֔יְמָה לִשְׁבֹּ֖ר אֶל־יוֹסֵ֑ף כִּֽי־חָזַ֥ק הָרָעָ֖ב בְּכָל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃
