Chapter 42
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣re ya'aqo֔b kּi֥y yeshsh-shshe֖ber bּemitzera֑yim vayּo֤'mer ya'aqob֙ lebana֔yv la֖mּah tּitera'ֽu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, he said to his sons, "Why do you just keep looking at each other?"

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer hinּe֣h shshama֔'etּiy kּi֥y yeshsh-shshe֖ber bּemitzera֑yim redu-shsha֨mּah֙ veshshiberu-la֣nu mishshּa֔m venicheye֖h velo֥ namֽut׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and buy some for us, so that we may live and not die."

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּered֥u 'acheֽy-yose֖p 'ashsara֑h lishshebּo֥r bּa֖r mimּitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

4

Edified Edition (EDE)But Jacob did not send Joseph's brother Benjamin with the others, for he said, "Lest some harm should happen to him."

Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Israel were among those who came to buy grain, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now Joseph was the governor over the land; it was he who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him with their faces to the earth.

Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph saw his brothers and recognised them, but he acted like a stranger and spoke harshly to them. "Where did you come from?" he asked. "From the land of Canaan to buy food," they replied.

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּakּe֥r yose֖p 'et-'echa֑yv vehe֖m lo֥ hikּiruֽhu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joseph remembered the dreams he had dreamed about them and said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land."
