Chapter 44
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֞v 'et-'ashshe֣r 'al-bּeyto֮ le'mor֒ malּe֞ 'et-'ametּecho֤t haֽ'anashshiym֙ 'o֔kel kּa'ashshe֥r yukel֖un shse'e֑t veshsi֥ym kּeֽsep-'i֖yshsh bּepi֥y 'ametּachetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Joseph gave these instructions to the steward of his house: "Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry, and put each man’s silver in the mouth of his sack.

וַיְצַ֞ו אֶת־אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּיתוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ מַלֵּ֞א אֶת־אַמְתְּחֹ֤ת הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֹ֔כֶל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּכְל֖וּן שְׂאֵ֑ת וְשִׂ֥ים כֶּֽסֶף־אִ֖ישׁ בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-gּebiy'i֞y gּebi֣y'a hakּe֗sep tּashsiym֙ bּepiy֙ 'ametּa֣chat haqּato֔n ve'e֖t kּe֣sep shshiber֑o vayּa֕'ashs kּideba֥r yose֖p 'ashshe֥r dּibּeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then put my silver cup in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack, along with the silver for his grain." And he did as Joseph said.

וְאֶת־גְּבִיעִ֞י גְּבִ֣יעַ הַכֶּ֗סֶף תָּשִׂים֙ בְּפִי֙ אַמְתַּ֣חַת הַקָּטֹ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת כֶּ֣סֶף שִׁבְר֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כִּדְבַ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֠m yaֽtze'֣u 'et-ha'iyr֮ lo֣ hirechiyqu֒ veyose֤p 'amar֙ laֽ'ashshe֣r 'al-bּeyt֔o q֥um redo֖p 'achare֣y haֽ'anashshi֑ym vehishsּagetּam֙ ve'amaretּa֣ 'alehe֔m la֛mּah shshilּametּe֥m ra'a֖h tּa֥chat tobaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They had not gone far from the city when Joseph said to his steward, "Go after those men at once, and when you overtake them, say to them, 'Why have you repaid good with evil?

הֵ֠ם יָֽצְא֣וּ אֶת־הָעִיר֮ לֹ֣א הִרְחִיקוּ֒ וְיוֹסֵ֤ף אָמַר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־בֵּית֔וֹ ק֥וּם רְדֹ֖ף אַחֲרֵ֣י הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהִשַּׂגְתָּם֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לָ֛מָּה שִׁלַּמְתֶּ֥ם רָעָ֖ה תַּ֥חַת טוֹבָֽה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): hal֣o ze֗h 'ashshe֨r yishshetּe֤h 'adoniy֙ bּ֔o veh֕u nache֥shsh yenache֖shsh bּ֑o hare'ote֖m 'ashshe֥r 'ashsiyteֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Isn’t this the cup my lord drinks from and also uses for divination? This is a wicked thing you have done.'"

הֲל֣וֹא זֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁתֶּ֤ה אֲדֹנִי֙ בּ֔וֹ וְה֕וּא נַחֵ֥שׁ יְנַחֵ֖שׁ בּ֑וֹ הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲשִׂיתֶֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּashsּige֑m vayedabּe֣r 'alehe֔m 'et-hadּebari֖ym ha'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the steward overtook them, he repeated these words to them.

וַֽיַּשִּׂגֵ֑ם וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אֶת־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ela֔yv la֚mּah yedabּe֣r 'adoni֔y kּadּebari֖ym ha'e֑lּeh chali֨ylah֙ la'abade֔yka me'ashs֖ot kּadּaba֥r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But they said to him, "Why does my lord say such things? Far be it from your servants to do anything like that!

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו לָ֚מָּה יְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲדֹנִ֔י כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה חָלִ֨ילָה֙ לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ מֵעֲשׂ֖וֹת כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): he֣n kּe֗sep 'ashshe֤r matza֨'nu֙ bּepi֣y 'ametּechote֔ynu heshshiybo֥nu 'ele֖yka me'e֣retz kּena֑'an ve'e֗yke nigenob֙ mibּe֣yt 'adone֔yka kּe֖sep '֥o zahaֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. So why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?

הֵ֣ן כֶּ֗סֶף אֲשֶׁ֤ר מָצָ֨אנוּ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ הֱשִׁיבֹ֥נוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְאֵ֗יךְ נִגְנֹב֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ כֶּ֖סֶף א֥וֹ זָהָֽב׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer gּam-'atּa֥h kedibereyke֖m kּen-h֑u 'ashshe֨r yimּatze֤ 'itּo֙ yiheyeh-lּi֣y 'a֔bed ve'atּe֖m tּihey֥u neqiyּiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Very well, then," he said, "let it be as you say. Whoever is found to have it will become my slave; the rest of you will be free from blame."

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר גַּם־עַתָּ֥ה כְדִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם כֶּן־ה֑וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִמָּצֵ֤א אִתּוֹ֙ יִהְיֶה־לִּ֣י עָ֔בֶד וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּהְי֥וּ נְקִיִּֽם׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayemahar֗u vayּori֛du 'i֥yshsh 'et-'ametּachetּ֖o 'a֑retzah vaֽyּipetּech֖u 'i֥yshsh 'ametּachetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Each of them quickly lowered his sack to the ground and opened it.

וַֽיְמַהֲר֗וּ וַיּוֹרִ֛דוּ אִ֥ישׁ אֶת־אַמְתַּחְתּ֖וֹ אָ֑רְצָה וַֽיִּפְתְּח֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayechapּe֕shs bּagּad֣ol heche֔l ubaqּato֖n kּilּa֑h vayּimּatze'֙ hagּabi֔y'a bּe'ametּa֖chat bּineyamiֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the steward proceeded to search, beginning with the oldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

וַיְחַפֵּ֕שׂ בַּגָּד֣וֹל הֵחֵ֔ל וּבַקָּטֹ֖ן כִּלָּ֑ה וַיִּמָּצֵא֙ הַגָּבִ֔יעַ בְּאַמְתַּ֖חַת בִּנְיָמִֽן׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayּiqere'֖u shsimelota֑m vaֽyּa'amos֙ 'i֣yshsh 'al-chamor֔o vayּashshu֖bu ha'iֽyrah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At this, they tore their clothes. Then they all loaded their donkeys and returned to the city.

וַֽיִּקְרְע֖וּ שִׂמְלֹתָ֑ם וַֽיַּעֲמֹס֙ אִ֣ישׁ עַל־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ הָעִֽירָה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ yehuda֤h ve'echayv֙ bּe֣ytah yose֔p veh֖u 'ode֣nּu shsha֑m vayּipּel֥u lepana֖yv 'aֽretzah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph was still in the house when Judah and his brothers arrived, and they threw themselves to the ground before him.

וַיָּבֹ֨א יְהוּדָ֤ה וְאֶחָיו֙ בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֔ף וְה֖וּא עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ שָׁ֑ם וַיִּפְּל֥וּ לְפָנָ֖יו אָֽרְצָה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lahem֙ yose֔p maֽh-hamּa'ashse֥h hazּe֖h 'ashshe֣r 'ashsiyte֑m hal֣o yeda'etּe֔m kּiֽy-nache֧shsh yenache֛shsh 'i֖yshsh 'ashshe֥r kּamoֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joseph said to them, "What is this deed you have done? Don’t you know that a man like me can find things out by divination?"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לָהֶם֙ יוֹסֵ֔ף מָֽה־הַמַּעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עֲשִׂיתֶ֑ם הֲל֣וֹא יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם כִּֽי־נַחֵ֧שׁ יְנַחֵ֛שׁ אִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּמֹֽנִי׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer yehuda֗h mah-nּo'mar֙ laֽ'doni֔y mah-nּedabּe֖r umah-nּitzetadּa֑q ha'elohi֗ym matza'֙ 'et-'avo֣n 'abade֔yka hinּenּ֤u 'abadiym֙ laֽ'doni֔y gּam-'ana֕chenu gּa֛m 'ashsher-nimetza֥ hagּabi֖y'a bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"What can we say to my lord?" Judah replied. "What can we speak? How can we prove our innocence? God has uncovered your servants’ guilt. We are now my lord’s slaves—we and the one who was found to have the cup."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֗ה מַה־נֹּאמַר֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י מַה־נְּדַבֵּ֖ר וּמַה־נִּצְטַדָּ֑ק הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים מָצָא֙ אֶת־עֲוֺ֣ן עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ הִנֶּנּ֤וּ עֲבָדִים֙ לַֽאדֹנִ֔י גַּם־אֲנַ֕חְנוּ גַּ֛ם אֲשֶׁר־נִמְצָ֥א הַגָּבִ֖יעַ בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer chali֣ylah lּi֔y me'ashs֖ot zo֑'t ha'i֡yshsh 'ashsher֩ nimetza֨ hagּabi֜y'a bּeyad֗o h֚u yiheyeh-lּi֣y 'a֔bed ve'atּe֕m 'al֥u leshshal֖om 'el-'abiykeֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But Joseph said, "Far be it from me to do such a thing! Only the man who was found to have the cup will become my slave. The rest of you, go back to your father in peace."

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר חָלִ֣ילָה לִּ֔י מֵעֲשׂ֖וֹת זֹ֑את הָאִ֡ישׁ אֲשֶׁר֩ נִמְצָ֨א הַגָּבִ֜יעַ בְּיָד֗וֹ ה֚וּא יִהְיֶה־לִּ֣י עָ֔בֶד וְאַתֶּ֕ם עֲל֥וּ לְשָׁל֖וֹם אֶל־אֲבִיכֶֽם׃פ

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֨shsh 'ela֜yv yehuda֗h vayּo'mer֮ bּi֣y 'adoniy֒ yedabּer-na֨ 'abedּeka֤ dabar֙ bּe'azene֣y 'adoni֔y ve'al-yi֥char 'apּeka֖ bּe'abedּe֑ka kּi֥y kam֖oka kּepare'oֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Judah went up to him and said, "Pardon your servant, my lord, let me speak a word to my lord. Do not be angry with your servant, though you are equal to Pharaoh himself.

וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלָ֜יו יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּאמֶר֮ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִי֒ יְדַבֶּר־נָ֨א עַבְדְּךָ֤ דָבָר֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י אֲדֹנִ֔י וְאַל־יִ֥חַר אַפְּךָ֖ בְּעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֥י כָמ֖וֹךָ כְּפַרְעֹֽה׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): adoni֣y shsha'a֔l 'et-'abada֖yv le'mo֑r hayeshsh-lake֥m 'a֖b 'o-'aֽch׃
Edified Edition (EDE)My lord asked his servants, 'Have you a father or a brother?'

אֲדֹנִ֣י שָׁאַ֔ל אֶת־עֲבָדָ֖יו לֵאמֹ֑ר הֲיֵשׁ־לָכֶ֥ם אָ֖ב אוֹ־אָֽח׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'adoni֔y yeshsh-la֨nu֙ 'a֣b zaqe֔n veye֥led zequni֖ym qata֑n ve'achi֨yv me֜t vayּiuate֨r h֧u lebadּ֛o le'imּ֖o ve'abi֥yv 'ahebֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And we answered, 'We have an aged father, and a small child born to him in his old age; his brother is dead, and he is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.'

וַנֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֔י יֶשׁ־לָ֨נוּ֙ אָ֣ב זָקֵ֔ן וְיֶ֥לֶד זְקֻנִ֖ים קָטָ֑ן וְאָחִ֨יו מֵ֜ת וַיִּוָּתֵ֨ר ה֧וּא לְבַדּ֛וֹ לְאִמּ֖וֹ וְאָבִ֥יו אֲהֵבֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'abade֔yka horidu֖hu 'ela֑y ve'ashsi֥ymah 'eyni֖y 'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me so I can see him for myself.'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ הוֹרִדֻ֖הוּ אֵלָ֑י וְאָשִׂ֥ימָה עֵינִ֖י עָלָֽיו׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'adoni֔y lo'-yuka֥l hanּa֖'ar la'azo֣b 'et-'abi֑yv ve'aza֥b 'et-'abi֖yv vameֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And we said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father; if he leaves him, his father will die.'

וַנֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֲדֹנִ֔י לֹא־יוּכַ֥ל הַנַּ֖עַר לַעֲזֹ֣ב אֶת־אָבִ֑יו וְעָזַ֥ב אֶת־אָבִ֖יו וָמֵֽת׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'abade֔yka 'im-lo֥ yere֛d 'achiyke֥m haqּato֖n 'itּeke֑m lo֥ tosip֖un lire'֥ot pּanaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But you told your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֔יךָ אִם־לֹ֥א יֵרֵ֛ד אֲחִיכֶ֥ם הַקָּטֹ֖ן אִתְּכֶ֑ם לֹ֥א תֹסִפ֖וּן לִרְא֥וֹת פָּנָֽי׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ kּi֣y 'ali֔ynu 'eֽl-'abedּeka֖ 'abi֑y vanּa֨gּed-l֔o 'e֖t dּibere֥y 'adoniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When we went back to your servant my father, we told him what my lord had said.

וַיְהִי֙ כִּ֣י עָלִ֔ינוּ אֶֽל־עַבְדְּךָ֖ אָבִ֑י וַנַּ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ אֵ֖ת דִּבְרֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer 'abi֑ynu shshu֖bu shshiberu-la֥nu me'at-'oֽkel׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then our father said, 'Go back and buy a little more food.'

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אָבִ֑ינוּ שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ־לָ֥נוּ מְעַט־אֹֽכֶל׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vanּo֕'mer lo֥ nuka֖l lare֑det 'im-yeshsh֩ 'achi֨ynu haqּato֤n 'itּa֨nu֙ veyara֔denu kּiy-lo֣ nuka֗l lire'ot֙ pּene֣y ha'i֔yshsh ve'achi֥ynu haqּato֖n 'eyne֥nּu 'itּaֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But we said, 'We cannot go down. Only if our youngest brother is with us will we go. We cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.'

וַנֹּ֕אמֶר לֹ֥א נוּכַ֖ל לָרֶ֑דֶת אִם־יֵשׁ֩ אָחִ֨ינוּ הַקָּטֹ֤ן אִתָּ֨נוּ֙ וְיָרַ֔דְנוּ כִּי־לֹ֣א נוּכַ֗ל לִרְאוֹת֙ פְּנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְאָחִ֥ינוּ הַקָּטֹ֖ן אֵינֶ֥נּוּ אִתָּֽנוּ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֛'mer 'abedּeka֥ 'abi֖y 'ele֑ynu 'atּe֣m yeda'etּe֔m kּi֥y shshena֖yim yaֽledah-lּi֥y 'ishshetּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife bore me two sons.

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר עַבְדְּךָ֥ אָבִ֖י אֵלֵ֑ינוּ אַתֶּ֣ם יְדַעְתֶּ֔ם כִּ֥י שְׁנַ֖יִם יָֽלְדָה־לִּ֥י אִשְׁתִּֽי׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֤ haֽ'echad֙ meֽ'itּi֔y va'oma֕r 'a֖ke taro֣p tora֑p velo֥ re'iyti֖yv 'ad-heֽnּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One of them went away from me, and I said, "He has surely been torn to pieces." And I have not seen him since.

וַיֵּצֵ֤א הָֽאֶחָד֙ מֵֽאִתִּ֔י וָאֹמַ֕ר אַ֖ךְ טָרֹ֣ף טֹרָ֑ף וְלֹ֥א רְאִיתִ֖יו עַד־הֵֽנָּה׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): uleqachetּe֧m gּam-'et-ze֛h me'i֥m pּana֖y veqara֣hu 'as֑on vehֽoradetּe֧m 'et-shseybati֛y bּera'a֖h shshe'oֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If you take this one from me too and harm comes to him, you will bring my grey hairs down to Sheol in misery.'

וּלְקַחְתֶּ֧ם גַּם־אֶת־זֶ֛ה מֵעִ֥ם פָּנַ֖י וְקָרָ֣הוּ אָס֑וֹן וְהֽוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת־שֵׂיבָתִ֛י בְּרָעָ֖ה שְׁאֹֽלָה׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h kּebo'iy֙ 'el-'abedּeka֣ 'abi֔y vehanּa֖'ar 'eyne֣nּu 'itּa֑nu venapeshsh֖o qeshshura֥h benapeshshֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So now, if the boy is not with us when I go back to your servant my father, and if my father, whose life is closely bound up with the boy’s life,

וְעַתָּ֗ה כְּבֹאִי֙ אֶל־עַבְדְּךָ֣ אָבִ֔י וְהַנַּ֖עַר אֵינֶ֣נּוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ וְנַפְשׁ֖וֹ קְשׁוּרָ֥ה בְנַפְשֽׁוֹ׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h kּire'ot֛o kּiy-'e֥yn hanּa֖'ar vame֑t vehori֨ydu 'abade֜yka 'et-shseyba֨t 'abedּeka֥ 'abi֛ynu bּeyag֖on shshe'oֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)sees that the boy isn't there, he will die. Your servants will bring the grey hairs of our father down to Sheol in sorrow.

וְהָיָ֗ה כִּרְאוֹת֛וֹ כִּי־אֵ֥ין הַנַּ֖עַר וָמֵ֑ת וְהוֹרִ֨ידוּ עֲבָדֶ֜יךָ אֶת־שֵׂיבַ֨ת עַבְדְּךָ֥ אָבִ֛ינוּ בְּיָג֖וֹן שְׁאֹֽלָה׃
